two are hospitalized at lancaster general. our marissa parra kicks off our coverage this morning. >> reporter: terrifying moments in southern pennsylvania where the governor says a small private plane crashed near lancaster airport. >> there are multiple calls for a crash at the airport. the plane known as a beechcraft bonanza crashed and five people were on board. air traffic control indicating there may have been a serious incident in the leadup. >> we have an open door. we need to return for a landing. >> mike, pull up. >> the aircraft is down just behind the terminal on the parking lot street area. >> reporter: dramatic video shows thick smoke and flames billowing out of cars. the state police is on the ground to assist first responders. the crash coming after a string of aviation crashes and close

calls in the last two months. the trump administration is facing a deadline to pay a massive debt. foreign aid organizations say the government owes about $670 llion for work already completed. a judge has set a deadline of 6:00 p.m. tonight. but the administration has said in court filings that it may need up to 10 days to pay. alice barr joins me now from d.c. congress also faces a deadline this week to keep the government up and running. >> reporter: that's right, good morning. and there is a friday night deadline for a government funding bill that would prevent a government shutdown. house speaker mike johnson revealed a new bill that would fund the government through the end of september. the continuing resolution includes an increase in defense spending while reducing non-defense spending with such a small majority in the house. speaker johnson can only afford to lose two republican votes. and there is already one gop

member who says he is a no. the resolution does have the support of president trump. the white house is preparing to enact tariffs on steel and aluminum imports as well on wednesday. president trump warned there could be even more tariffs in the future, and he brushed off concerns about a recession last night on air force one. >> are you worried about a recession? maria bartiromo asked you, and you kind of hesitated. >> i'll tell you what. of course you hesitate. all i know is this. we're going to take in hundreds of billions of dollars in tariffs, and we're going to become so rich you're not going to know where to spend all that money. >> reporter: and meanwhile, the administration is concerned about what messages are reaching the press. four sources tell nbc news that the department of homeland security is performing polygraph tests on employees. i.c.e. arrest numbers have been lower than expected and officials have blamed leaks to the press about i.c.e. operations. so they're trying to detect who

may be sharing that information. in a statement, the dhs says that as a national security agency we can and should and will polygraphph personnel. meanwhile, the effort to shrink federal government continues. health and human services employees were offered a buyout of $25,000 to resign from their jobs. that's according to a person who received the e-mail and an administration official. about 80,000 people work for that agency. they have until friday to decide if they're going to accept that offer, frances? >> alice, thank you. now to washington where the secret service shot and wounded an armed man close to the white house. it happened just past midnight yesterday. local police reported what they called a suicidal individual traveling to d.c. secret service

personnel shot him. president trump was not at the white house during the incident. in new york, an attorney for a palestinian activist who helped organize protests at columbia university says he was arrested by i.c.e. nbc's camila bernal has more. >> reporter: a palestinian activist who helped lead the protests at columbia university is in i.c.e. custody. mahmoud kahlil's attorney saying he was wrongfully arrested by immigration gents. kahlil was one of the few protesters who shared his name during the protests last year. >> we want to divest in israeli occupation. >> reporter: in a statement, columbia university acknowledging reports of i.c.e. around campus. this reported arrest coming on

on a landslide victory with 89.9% of his party's leadership vote on sunday. his election as prime minister comes at a critical moment for his country and party. he must call general elections later this year, and the party has seen its fortunes radically changed by antagonism from washington. prior to trump's rhetoric about canada becoming a 51st state, the party looked like it was on the ropes. but it reverd a 26-point deficit, coming out two points ahead in polling. the turn around was driven by liberal efforts to respond to trump's comments on tariffs and annexation. >> the canadian government has rightly retaliated and is rightly retaliating with our own tariffs.

vaccines cause autism. the cdc falls under the department of health and human services led by robert f. kennedy jr. he has expressed anti-vaccine views in the past. a state of emergency in new york this morning after wildfires sparked on eastern long island. the fast-moving names prompted a response from 80 fire departments and 600 personnel. two fire crew members were hurt, one sustaining second-degree burns to his face, and another suffering a head injury. officials say they are now both home recovering. the flames driven by drought-like conditions. one fire is 80% contained. and a fire breaking out on the outskirts of brooklyn, but water drops finally put a stop to the flames. now let's get a look at the weather for the week ahead.
