"early today" starts right now. glad to be with you. i'm frances rivera. five people are injured after a small plane crashed into a residential area in lancaster county, pennsylvania. all five were passengers on board the aircraft. three of the victims were taken to a burn center, while the

other two were hospitalized at lancaster general. the investigation is in its early stages, but air traffic control audio indicates there may have been a serious incident on board. >> tower, bonanza has an open door. needs to return for a landing. >> mike, pull up. >> rescue one. the aircraft is down. just behind the terminal on the parking lot street area. >> there were no injuries to anyone on the ground, although five cars were damaged. in new york state, a race to contain massive brush fires. hundreds of acres already burned, and millions are also under fire alerts across the plains. maya eaglin is on long island. >> reporter: an around-the-clock battle on new york's long island. crews in desperate race to contain these massive wildfires ripping across hundreds of acres. officials finally getting the upper hand but worried the worst could still be ahead. >> we're concerned because the winds are still blowing, that it

might spark up again. >> reporter: the area a tindbox with drought-like conditions. thousands of trees were destroyed. buildings burned. when you see this destruction, how does it make you feel? >> it's upsetting. i watched flames go up to our property, up to the building and up and over the top of the building, and i watched it like there was a giant hand. >> reporter: across the country, 9 million on alert for fires. in the bull's eye, the plains states, expecting punishing winds up to 65 miles per hour. while down south, texas reeling from severe storms that battered the state with a mix of rain and hail. even snow. the storm turning deadly near dallas. winds ripping this building apart. back in long island, crews keeping an eye on hotspots, while the search for answers has already begun. >> it's too early to tell whether or not this fire was started naturally or, or there's

some nefarious origin. but we are going to get to that, and we should have an answer within the next couple of days. >> reporter: we know both of those firefighters who were injured are now home and in stable condition. we're also hearing from investigators that they're going to be using drone surveillance and ground crews to try and figure out how and why this fire actually happened. back to you. >> maya, thank you. the trump administration is facing a deadline tonight to pay a massive debt. foreign aid organizations say the government owes about $670 million for work already completed. a judge has set a deadline of 6:00 p.m. tonight. but the administration has said in court filings that it may need up to ten days to pay. nbc's alice barr joins me now from d.c. good morning, alice. so congress also faces a deadline this week to keep the government up and running. >> reporter: good morning, frances. that's right. we are ticking down to a friday night deadline to avoid a government shutdown. house speaker mike johnson revealed a new bill that would fund the government through the

end of september. the continuing resolution, as it's called, includes an increase in defense spending while reducing non-defense spending. with such a small majority in the house, johnson can only afford to lose two republican votes, and there's already one gop member who says he is a no. the resolution does have the support of president trump. the white house is preparing to enact tariffs on steel and aluminum imports on wednesday, president trump warned that there could be more tariffs in the future, and he brushed off concerns about a recession last night on air force one. >> are you worried about a recession? maria bartiromo asked you, and you kind of hesitated. >> i'll tell you what. of course you hesitate. all i know is this. we're going to take in hundreds of billions of dollars in tariffs, and we're going to become so rich you're not going to know where to spend all this money. >> reporter: meanwhile, the administration is concerned about what message the are

reaching the press. four sources tell nbc news that the department of homeland security is performing polygraph tests on employees. i.c.e. arrest numbers have been lower than expected, and officials have blamed leaks to the press about i.c.e. operations. so they're trying to detect who may be sharing that information. in a statement, the dhs says as a national security agency, we can, should and will polygraph meanwhile, the effort to shrink federal government continues. health and human services employees were offered a buyout of $25,000 to resign from their jobs. that's according to a person who received the e-mail, and an administration official, about 80,000 people work for that agency. they have until friday to decide if they want to take that offer. frances? secretary of state marco rubio is on his way to saudi arabia for talks with ukrainian officials on how to end the

ongoing invasion of ukraine. rubio spoke with his ukrainian counterpart and told him that president trump wants to end the war as soon as possible. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy confirmed he will also visit saudi arabia today for a meeting with crown prince mohammed bin salman. the secret service shooting and wounding an armed man. police reporting what they call a suicidal individual heading to d.c. here's vaughn hilliard. >> reporter: troubling questions after a shooting near the white house. >> shooting, 17th e street. >> reporter: secret service saying their agents shot a man with law enforcement after they were notified of a suicidal individual traveling to d.c. according to two senior law enforcement officials, the suspect is 27-year-old andrew dawson, driving this white

chrysler sedan from indiana. they spotted one who marked the description here. it heightens new concerns about security around the president, who spent the weekend in palm beach. president trump survived an assassination attempt last year at a pennsylvania campaign rally, and then while golfing on his west palm beach course two months later. sean curran, who was the secret service agent in charge is now the agency's director. the security of the president and vice president vance of pinnacle concern. vance with his 3-year-old daughter approached on the sidewalks of cincinnati saturday by protesters supportive of ukraine. vance posting that the protesters followed us around and shouted as my daughter became increasingly anxious and scared, though noting it was a mostly respectful conversation. >> i had said. if i talk to you for a few

street. indeces ending lower with the s&p 500 posting its worst week since september. that's because investors have been trying to get their head around president trump's policies and the flip-flops on tariffs on canadian and mexican goods and the impact that this could have on inflation and the economy grows. and that has been weighing on sentiment. as you just heard, president trump dismissed this concern but did not completely rule out a recession in 2025, instead, mentioning transition. we should get a slough of economic data. the new york fed survey today and a big focus on inflation with the consumer price index for february and consumer price index on thursday. now to another story.
