actually funds the president's priorities. when things move to the senate it gets interesting. the bill means seven democratic votes to get through the senate. typically senate democrats aren't the type to try to shut down the government over what's essentially a noncontroversial funding bill. they don't want to risk furloughing federal workers who are already struggling. they don't want to rick angering military families or disrupting the parts of the economy that depend heavily on the government like air travel. democrats do want assurances of some kind that the president will actually follow any law that they pass. this won't be a situation where he and elon musk are deciding not too spend money on things they don't like or keep making cuts to the federal work force that democrats think are inappropriate and in some cases illegal. all of that to be said, don't be surprised to see senate democrats and president trump in some kind of negotiation here at the white house by the end of this week.

>> we're starting to get into it, guys. a spring break crowd, don't you think? >> how is the crowd? everyone is okay. >> i can tell these are texans. >> you can just spot them. >> i felt them. they're my people. >> guys, royalty in studio 1a. alert, royalti. two-time oscar winner cate blanchett talking about her role today. she is a secret agent in her new movie. and she's taking her talents back to the stage in a show in london right now. she's starring in this play, and i sound like this. don't worry. i'm not contagious, says everyone. >> our "today" show coffee mugs will be sold out after the break. she sold it. also ahead, regina hall is here. she was awesome as your co-host, by the way. talking about being the bad guy for "odessa." >> we almost got a tat, but we
8:32 am
didn't. >> okay. later on in the third hour, just later, carson, the great jason alexander will be here. we will talk about his starring role in "the electric state." and, of course, we have to ask about my favorite show ever, "seinfeld." you know, my dog's name is bosco after "seinfeld". >> you will love our "jenna & friends" guest host this morning, nba hall of famer dwyane wade is here. he's here all week. i know, right? we will have so much fun. and we will chat with ryan greenberg from the new "suits l.a." as well. >> really quickly, i wanted to take a moment to wish my son a happy 11th birthday. 11 years ago, he came into the world. boy, that's a throwback there, boy. >> made you a dad. >> yeah. he spent the last 11 years bringing joy and happiness into
8:33 am
our world. happy birthday, son. we love you. turns out some good weather this birthday, too. >> he can go outside with his friends. yeah, looks like a nice one. looks like a chilly one. we will see temperatures up into the 60s, 50s in new england. record high temperatures across the upper mid-west. the northern plains windy, too. as we get towards the middle of the week, that spring warmth continues across the east coast and the southeast, too. we are looking at a pretty big storm making its way into the west coast with heavy rain across central and northern california. some of that heavier snow spreads east by friday into the eastern rockies and a chance of severe and you heard her mentioning the storm expected for the west coast. that will make its arrival starting on wednesday for today and tomorrow. that spring, like weather will continue with daytime highs climbing into the mid 60s. as we inch into wednesday and thursday. that will be our first round of several that will
8:34 am
activate heading into friday, saturday and sunday, bringing rain, wind and lots of sierra snow. so prep today and tomor real quick. just want to wish a happy 50th birthday. >> you put a lot of work into these signs. what is your name? >> karina. >> where are you from? >> pennsylvania. >> well, happy birthday. have so much fun in new york. coming up next, guys, cate blanchett will tell us about that new movie. a big career milestone as well. but, first, this is "today" on nbc. mmmm... planet oat's so creamy and not watery like- exactly! and unsweetened has 0 grams of sugar. and it's an excellent source of calcium. wow! planet oat really has it all!
8:37 am
with diverse roles ranging from queen elizabeth i to bob dylan our next guest as done it all. her newest movie is a spy thriller about a married couple both elite spies at a british intelligence agency who find themselves in a situation that can be challenging to the marriage. take a look. >> i need something. geofencing. last known zurich. i want a moving trace on his cell, and i want it to be unlocked. >> i'm not going to prison for you. >> oh, you are too far in to worry about that now. don't you think? >> cate, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> you know, this movie is not an action movie. it is a thriller, a spy movie, but it is also a marriage story. >> so much fun. it's directed by steven soderberg who has done all the "oceans" films.
8:38 am
a genre lover but also vendor. so it is wildly entertaining. >> it is really interesting because i tried to set it up a little bit, but you and your husband, played by michael fastbender. >> i know. hello. >> he's searching for a mole and you are one of the suspects. it is a lot about marriage and trust wrapped up as a spy thriller. >> when you are an espionage agent, when you can lie about everything, then what does the truth mean? they would literally kill for each other, but she is a suspect, along with others. >> you have pierce brosnan. he's the og. >> he totally holds that of the >> he totally holds the dna of spy stuff and i had a couple of scenes with him. >> the black bag refers to something that's secret. >> i think every marriage needs a black bag. >> i'm so glad you said this because that's exactly where i was going. that's like, we don't talk about it or -- >> it comes from the tradition
8:39 am
of spies putting their secret documents into a black bag. once that black bag is locked, no one can know what's in it. in order for their marriage to function when they go on separate operations, when they ask one another details, they say, sorry, black bag. >> if i say to my husband, did you take the trash out, he could say, "sorry, black bag." >> or why did you come home at 3:00 a.m. last night? "black bag". >> a challenge. >> yeah. >> i know you're on the stage now, and i'm giving you most valuable cast award because you had a show saturday night in london. you are here today. >> that's how committed i am to this movie and people seeing it in cinemas. >> and you have another show on wednesday. >> and tom burke, who plays freddie in the film is also on stage with me. >> he's running around doing press as well. >> yeah, yeah. >> what is it like to be back on the stage? because i read that you kind of for a long time felt like i'm a stage actress. that's who i am and who i will be.
8:40 am
>> yeah, i worked with my husband, which a lot of people found horrifying. we ran a theater company for a couple years. and an amazing director is directing it. i think it is my home. but a lot of the actors who are in "black bag" also work on stage. there is a lot of long scenes in "black bag," dinner table scenes that were quite theatrical, almost like a play. to work with actors who had stage experience was great. >> what is it about the stage? that intimacy. >> you hope they go to the cinema. you don't know whether they've seen it. you don't know how they feel about the film. >> how do you know as an actress whether or not the audience is with you. but you do feel it. >> well, you can see if they fall asleep in the morning, checking in.
8:41 am
>> yeah. >> but in the sea gull that tom and i are in at the moment, there is not audience participation, but there is a direct address to the audience. >> yes. >> this is the thing an audience doesn't really understand. they complete the evening. so depending on how they respond, the show goes slightly a different way. i love how fluidid that isn stage. >> that's exciting. >> one thing i read, you have a 10-year-old little girl and she wants a miniature highland calf. how is that going? >> what little girl doesn't? >> you do live in the countryside. >> we do. >> so can she have it, mom, please? >> yeah. i'm a vegetarian, but i love cows. my husband used to call them high heeled philosophers because of the way they walk. apparently, there are miniature ones. we went to scotland, they're maximal -- >> oh. >> they're only available in the states. and i just said, sweetheart, we're not getting a cow from america. >> not good. maybe a puppy. >> or a turtle. >> or a chicken.
8:42 am
>> we have chickens. >> okay, we settled that. thank you so much. what a pleasure. the movie is called "black bag." from our sister company focus features. it hits theaters on friday. carson, over to you. >> is there a limit for how many times you can use the black bag excuse? how about a resolution reset? if you need to get back on track with health goals, simple things that you can do today, literally today, to make a difference. we have the expert to help us all out. but, first, this is "today" on nbc.

assistant professor at nyu and founder of pop nutrition. good to see you, bud. help us out. we have a lot to get to. we have five buckets we want to cover. you want people like today to take stock as to where you are. i know you call it a self-health audit. >> yeah.in on themselves and get a baseline. where is your baseline from a few months ago. go back to those health goals, look at your list. where are you? i want people to collect data everyone has their health goals points on themselves. >> what are those data points? >> i want you to track your steps. >> how much you eat. >> yeah, h how much u're eating. where is your body weight, if you want to lose weight, if you are looking to maintain your weight. maybe you want to cut down alcohol. how many drinks are you having per week? >> how dare you. >> yeah, exactly.
8:46 am
this will give you an idea of where to start. >> yeah, really where are you and are you tracking to meet those goals? if not, seek a health professional. >> let's talk about protein. everybody talks about protein, but not all proteins are created equal. >> really, the focus here is we know protein is important for muscle building, keeping us full and helping us maintain our weight. when we look at muscle mass, actually animal protein has a slight advantage over plant, which is fine. if you are going to go the animal route, make sure you have low fat options. if you are going to go the plant-based route, make sure you are having a couple more servings per day because it is not as easily absorbed as animal protein. >> let's talk about fiber. >> yeah. so fiber really important, helps with our gut, helps with digestion. less than 10% of americans get
8:47 am
and with women, mid-20s. >> this would be, enough fiber today. the recommendations for men, just over 30. and with women, mid-20s. >> this would be, what, adding raspberries to your greek yogurt? >> i want everyone to try to have a high protein, high fiber breakfast, so start that day out. whole fruits, o, go the fruit route. raspberries, blackberries, even avocados, great sources. >> you say exercise is important, walking, going to the gym. like there is exercise snacks you talk about. what are those? >> yeah, it is not snacking in the sense that we're eating and exercising. i wish it was that easy, right? these are one to two-minute bursts of activities throughout the day. most of us are sedentary. we work a desk job for the most part. get up and move around. make your muscles burn, jumping jacks, air squats. even a short walk is great. it can reduce your heart disease risk by 30%. >> finally, you asked us to track your wins. >> yes. i gave you a lot of tips today. i want you to track what you are doing and maybe what you need to improve.
8:48 am
one of the most important things you can do is actually document what we're doing. and actually, the act of documenting is the most -- it gives us the most benefit. i want people to shoot for about three times per day, tracking your steps, tracking what you are eating, even your exercise. again, you are your best cheerleader. i will end with this. go for progress and not perfecection. >> yeah. no one likes to track, you know, too much because you are held accountable. >> exactly. >> when you look back at it. good stuff. thank you very much. for more on that, too, you have his seven-day resolution reset challenge is right now at the start today app. just scan our qr code for all those details. >> i like that, a resolution reset. coming up next, we will look forward to talking to regina hall here. she has a wild new role. i saw it yesterday. she's also bringing back one of our st beloved characters.mo
8:51 am
we have seen her on "girls' trip," and we laughed with her last week when she was hosting on "jenna & friends." this morning she is back in 1a to talk about her new movie "odessa" that finds herself in a strange city under the control of the crime lord. played by regina. take a look. >> his eye in the sky. it is above this stage. dust to dust. in him we trust. >> regina hall, welcome back. i watched it yesterday. it's a little dark. a little dark. but it's also -- it's genre
8:52 am
bending, too. >> yeah, right. >> it's sci-fi. it's dystopian. >> it is. >> it's a musical. >> it is. and the director wrote all the music as well because he was a musician. >> you play a bad guy. this is the first time i have seen you play a role like this. what was that like for you? >> i have to say it was kind of fun. the hair and makeup process was long because there is a lot of prosthetics. but i will say it was fun to be that dark. >> again, it is a musical. but we don't hear you sing. why is that? >> they said, regina, we don't want you to show up sadie. that's a quote. >> is that really what happened? >> no, it was ied. you know what i mean? maybe it wasn't a quote. maybe i just telepathically received it. i know she doesn't sing. there was originally a song in there, but it was like a spoken word song for neon deon.
8:53 am
>> can you sing in real life? >> i don't know because i think i can. >> okay. >> but then, when i'm alone i can. i know that sounds strange, but when i'm alone, i do sound good. >> how would you know if you are alone? >> i would say, if there is one person there. if my assistant is there, she's like, that sounded really good. but if i think about it, it's like dancing. >> everyone thinks they can. >> once you are doing it, you can't. when i'm alone, i can do it. >> would you like to give us a few notes here. >> well, then, i would be showing up everything. what else would matter? i just think in an act of selflessness and sacrifice -- >> thank you. let's talk about the look you have in this movie because your character, in addition to being dark, no eye brows. it is a very specific look. recently, i saw you posted on
8:54 am
instagram. this is not the first time you made some questionable eye brow choices. what's going on in this phase of your life? >> that was the look. and i have thick eye brows naturally. that right there, i was so happy when i got them that thin. they're terribly shaped. but i had it and then i had the weave and that was a tree weave. like that was -- that was like -- back then that was something, i'm telling you. >> and if somebody had seen you on the street and said, that's a look? they would have had to fight you? >> they don't want this smoke. >> i heard that "girls' trip 2." will packer confirmed there's a script. >> did he? >> yeah. >> did he say that? did he say when i can read it? >> no. i'm excited. i know they said they will have a few -- it was so much fun to make that movie with the girls,
8:55 am
too. they said they will have a new script. hopefully it will happen this year. >> we were just talking before we came on. i didn't know this about you, but true crime is like a thing for you. >> i'm really excited to be sitting with you because i'm watching you all the time. >> you watch a lot of "dateline." >> yes. >> that surprises me because you seem so light. how did you discover true crime? >> you know, i know like people feel like it's dark. i don't know that -- obviously, it's dark, right? but it is a part of the human element. you know, there is a quote, and i can't remember. but i remember i was reading maya angelo. and she said, if someone does it, it means it is human, right? which means i am capable. but we are all capable because it is a human act. so i just find it more fascinating. >> okay. >> and i -- i -- i do love it. >> and you're producing a true crime series? >> well, i will be.
8:56 am
i love it so much. i did a nonscripted deal with mgm, and that is a part of a slate that will be coming out. and i did narrate something called the grim sleeper, which you know. >> so we will be competitors now. >> we will be competitors. >> i don't like it. >> no, we won't be because i watch you every day. >> thank you. thank you for waking up with us and thank you for going to sleep with us at night. thank you. "od "odessa" coming up march 30th will. coming up on thehe 3rd hou we will unlock your phone's little known tricks and hacks. later on "jenna & friends," d. wade is cohosting. but, first, your local news.
