five. the first in a series of storms making its way across the bay area. you can see it on our satellite radar there. forecaster cinthia pimentel is tracking the time line of this new round of wet weather. plus new steel and aluminum tariffs taking effect overnight. the impact it will have on imports and the price you pay. all of this as we await a key inflation report this morning. and subtraction hits the department of education. the massive cuts now gutting about half the staff at the agency, which oversees everything from college loans to civil rights. this is today in the bay. and a good wednesday morning i'm ginger conejero saab in for marcus washington. good to have you, ginger. andnd i'm laura garcia. so this morning
5:02 am
we're issuing a microclimate weather alert as a new storm makes its way across the bay area. in fact, we've got a live look at storm ranger atop san bruno mountain. it is the bay area's only mobile doppler radar. the great thing about stormranger is that it's closer to the ground, so it gets a more accurate scan of your neighborhood. let's check in with forecaster cinthia pimentel. she's in for kari this morning. you've been monitoring the storm's path. yeah, i've been talking about it since the weekend. and i was telling people, get ready for the middle of the week. and here it is. we're looking at the richmond toll plaza right now. a slick commute for some people, but the rain hasn't made its way everywhere. there's some light, scattered showers up there through the north bay right now. so petaluma, out towards the coast and down into parts of san rafael. but as we move on south, things are much quieter right now. just also some light rain over the summit. so prepare for that as we get out the door. temperatures not bad with that moisture coming in. mostly in the 50s. i don't expect us to warm up any more from here. so just a jacket weather kind of day with that umbrella. keeping it close to you as we track some light rain through the early
5:03 am
morning hours. but those heavier bands starting to come into the picture as we go on after around 11 12:00. continuing on into the afternoon. so we'll talk continue to talk about the impacts here, not only for us, but into the sierra as well. and what i need you to do to prepare. that's coming up in a few minutes, laura. all right. sounds good. thanks, cinthia. and if you don't already have it, our nbc bay area app is a great resource to have when it's raining. just scan this qr code to download it for free. you can get access to our storm ranger,, the bay area's only mobile doppler radar. now let's check in with mike inouye. he's got a look at that morning commute. yeah, and we'll talk about the weather in one second. but i do want to remind folks, this is day three. still no light rail or bus service for the vta. that's throughout santa clara valley. again, paratransit is operational, but that negotiations continue or the talk continues between the union and vta itself. over here, the weather is the other issue. look how slick the roadways are. we just had a lot of rain hit the lens. looks like they ran the wipers. a smoother drive now, but there's a slow drive
5:04 am
approaching the golden gate bridge and those slick conditions. you see the green highlighting and also the slower sensors as they start to clear some of those crews on the north side of the bridge, look at the green patches starting to build over here through the east bay, and we'll continue to see that as more rain comes through those green light patches. that means there are slicker roadways likely throughout those areas. we'll see it spread throughout the bay. as cinthia talked about those bands coming through mid-morning. but right now, watch those damp roads. it will have a little slowing out of the altamont, per usual. back to you. all right. we'll check in. thanks, mike. now, this morning new tariffs are taking effect. and anyone trying to make it in the bay will feel these today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us live with the tariffs on aluminum and steel as well as the impact on fuel prices. good morning kris. well good morning to you ginger. so it might be hard to believe with the prices you see here behind me. but prices for fuel are actually starting to come down here in california. and we're about 20 some cents lower than we were last year. so that might be the
5:05 am
silver lining for us this morning, as we know that those tariffs have gone into effect overnight. we talked with a gasbuddy analyst who says that tariffs on canadian goods are unlikely to impact fuel prices because california is not dependent on canadian crude or refined products. however, with a refinery fire last month and the changeover to summer blend, we still could feel a price increase. typically, we do see increases throughout the spring into early summer because of the changeover to cleaner summer gasoline that's mandated in california by the air resources board, as well as refinery maintenance, which is still ongoing ahead of the summer driving season. those factors usually push prices up, but with the refinery fire already having boosted prices significantly in february, it is maybe likely that we could have already seen prices peak. so any penny that you save at the pump you will need, because tariffs on imported metals will definitely
5:06 am
have an impact on all things aluminum, like maybe your favorite canned drink at walnut creek. cali craft brewing company, which uses millions of aluminum cans from canada every year. the brewery is bracing for an impact there, but also in the impact the price of canadian barley that they use and building materials they need for a planned expansion. tariffs will impact their bottom line and eventually the customers bar tab. i think that's the hardest part of all this, is that there is no ability to plan, and our heads constantly on a swivel. now those tariffs just went into effect overnight. so it might be a minute before we feel the impact as consumers. but we just got a note from nato that they are announcing that they are looking also at those tariffs. and they could see retaliatory tariffs as well in san jose kris sanchez today in the bay. thanks a lot chris a lot to watch out for.he u.s. department of

education is laying off about half of its workforce. about 1300 career employees are receiving termination notices today. they're being given an opportunity to return to office, to turn in government property and clean out their desks. included in the reduction of the force is nearly 600 employees who accepted voluntary resignation. opportunities for retirement. california educators are among those expressing concerns. the staff who are being laid off were the staff who were making sure that special ed students were getting the federal funding they needed. there's a whole bunch of other hosts of programs, including lunches for poor students that come to our federal government, partially pays for. u.s. education secretary linda mcmahon says president trump's directive is to eventually shut the entire department down. but that would requi an act of congress. secretary mcmahon says the department will still deliver on special education funding and other statutory programs. happening today, the

man recently arrested in connection with the overdose deaths of two north bay teenagers iss due back in court this morning for a plea hearing. ramon nunez is accused of selling drugs laced with fentanyl to 16 year old gia walsh and her 18 year old boyfriend, logan camp. they died in a santa rosa home last month. investigators believe the teens thought it was cocaine. nunez is also being tied to the drug overdoses of two underage girls who survived. he's currently being held without bail. oakland school board members tonight will vote on budget cuts approved last month. the board cuts include up to 150 layoffs. the district faces a deficit approaching $100 million, along with declining enrollment. pink slips must go out by the 15th. tonight's meeting takes place at 630. ahead of that, at 6:00, the teachers union is organizing a rally outside of the meeting. now for riders. there's no change in the paralyzing vta

transit strike. but in a new development, the agency has filed a legal complaint against the local amalgamated transit union. attorneys claim the union is violating a no strike clause in the contract. now, the union, meanwhile, argues that contract expired on march 3rd, which led to this strike. this will be the third straight day vta light rail and bus service is at a standstill. vta is offering workers a 9% wage increase over three years. the union is seing double that amount over the same span. 508 for you on this wednesday morning. let's take a live look at san francisco and cinthia. i've got to say, the drive down is a little spotty with the with the showers there. are we going to expect something to hit more right now in the morning hours? it should be calm for that commute. but definitely don't leave the house with that umbrelland making sure that your windshield wipers are in good shape. let's head a little bit south into pacifica. we start the morning dry, but those storm clouds will be around.
5:10 am
notice that i put windy all over the graphics for the afternoon hours, and we can see those heavier bands starting to come in right around lunchtime and continuing even on into the evening commute. so prepare for that. we're going to be tracking this low. that will bring us all of that moisture and the wind. but right behind me, we see the clouds starting to take a little bit more of that popcorn shape that could be embedding some thunderstorms in there. so we'll talk about that. i'll give you the timeline, what we can do to prepare and of course talk about the sierra all of that turning back into winter coming up in a few minutes. but before we hit the road, mike wants to give us the cheapest gas prices. and i know chris talked about the tariffs and the considerations. so we may see these prices change. we have seen them come down a little bit and they are down over last year. we're going to start of course in alameda county where it's a shade under $4 and pleasanton 3.99. i know just there at 76 in 408 we saw last couple of days ago. they're low now. is 405 at most. stop on camden avenue, and from moe's we head up to solano county to sam's club for their

is coming our way. as we move on into the late morning hours and into that evening commute, there is a lot of rain. a lot of wind and a lot of snow on the way for the sierra. we'll talk about the full microclimate outlook coming up in a few minutes. and right now we're looking at the bay bridge and san francis from our rooftop camera in emeryville. very steady right now on the camera as well as the drive into the city. you heard cynthia's forecast or a little tease of it. we will get some more wind and some rain throughout the morning. we'll talk about timing and we'll see how those sensors are shaping up. they should see some change in the north bay coming up. well good morning. very happy wednesday to you. lyft says it will offer a new lyft silver for seniors. it's a simplified version of its app with easy customer support. look for that later this year. that's the only good news, really. stocks fell. travel stocks fell hard as airlines like united worry people have already pulled back on t taking trips. goldman sachs dialing back its predictions on
5:16 am
the american economy. economists at jp morgan chase increasing their predictions of a recession. now we get key inflation data today, and it'll likely show inflation is slowing slightly, but still above where the fed wants it to be. that comes up at 530 our time. this will be the first cpi reading that falls entirely within the trump presidency. remember, he's only been president for a little more than 50 days. here's the president at a business roundtable hosted by cisco ceo chuck robbins. apple's tim cook was also there. business people very worried, worried about tariffs, not just the cost of tariffs but their unpredictability on again off again on again. the white house press secretary defended trump's tariffs yesterday but got a key point wrong, the same one that the president does. american companies pay american tariffs, not the other country. tariffs are a tax hike on foreign countries that again have been ripping us off. tariffs are a
5:17 am
tax cut for the american people. and the president is a staunch advocate of tax cuts. as you know he campaigned on no taxes on tips no taxes on overtime, no taxes on social security benefits. he is committed to all three of those things, and he expects congress to pass them later this year. i'm sorry. have you ever paid a tariff? because i have. they don't get charged on foreign companies. they get charged on the importers. and i think think it's insulting that you are trying to test my knowledge of economics and the decisions that this president has made. i'm now regret giving a question to the associated press. now, there is a way to get the cost of a tariff on china to fall on the chinese by forcing manufacturers over there to lower prices. that's what walmart is trying to do get their suppliers to cut prices, then sell the item to you with no price cut, no price hike either. we'll see. quite the scene outside the white house as a tesla showroom came to the president. president trump said he wanted to show support for tesla by buying one. he picked a
5:18 am
red one. tesla stock has crumpled with the brand damage caused by its boss, elon musk, and critics giving those cars some pretty harsh nicknes. asked by a conservative news outlet about the people protesting outside tesla dealerships, president trump said he'd be willing to label them domestic terrorists. tesla and trump have not had a great relationship, trump once said. elon musk makes cars that don't drive long enough, driverless cars that crash and rocketships to nowhere. musk, for his part, called trump too old to be president and said he should hang up his hat ride into the sunset. speaking of driverless cars, waymo coming to the peninsula, the alphabet owned self-driving taxis will start picking up passengers in palo alto, mountain view. some parts of the south, like los altos. the areas are very specific because waymo maps them out carefully. i shot this video with my phone of a ride around san francisco. still can't get most of my family to try it, but maybe now that it's a little

closer to the south bay, maybe we'll give it a shot. my kids are all about it, right? i know they love living in the future. i live in the future. i know they see it and they're like, it's a waymo. yeah. no kidding. yeah. no no driver in there mama. all right. thanks a lot scott. you bet. a future first ballot hall of famer has giants fans buzzing this spring. 42 year old pitcher justin verlander looked dominant last night in a toned down bay bridge series game in arizona. he allowed just one run over five innings against the a's. the giants won it 5 to 3. and maybe the bay bridge series is a thing of the past, but baseball fans can now embrace what the san jose giants are calling battle of the bay 2.0 this april 2nd, the california league team says it will host the oakland ballers in an exhibition game at excite ballpark in san jose. it's also being called the first time ever an mlb affiliate has played an independent league team. pretty cool. well, new this morning. an old fable says slow and steady

wins the race. but tsa workers at a new jersey airport made quick work of busting a man who tried to smuggle in a live turtle. now the reptile was found in his pants on friday while going through a body scanner at newark liberty international. the man was questioned and escorted out of the checkpoint by agents after missing his flight. now the turtle was turned over to port authority police, who say they plan to contact u.s. fish and wildlife officials. it is not clear if that man will face charges, which is a bummer. he was separated from his little turtle. oh yeah, but are they sure that was on purpose? because i know that when i go through the security check, sometimes i forget my keys or my wallet. and your turtle? maybe just move down there, right? like, maybe he was just hugging there very slowly. okay. what about the storms moving in slowly or quickly? slowly for the morning, but then very fast and just some pounding rain into the afternoon. so let's get started right now. and speaking of airports, might want to check
5:21 am
in there. sfo your flight later on today as not only the rain will be a thing, but also the wind. and as you go up into the higher elevations, that's when it gets to get even faster. so check in there. commute. busy out there in dublin, still dry. i hope everybody is carrying all their rain gear for today because we are going to need it not only today, but it's an active 7-day forecast that you're starting to see right there at the bottom of your screen. some low clouds right now through san jose, but starting off mostly dry. we take it in with storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar. just some light rain right now through the north bay, parts of the coastline there, san mateo coast and over the summit. now here's where i was talking about it being a slow start into the morning hours. some spotty sprinkles. but then here we go. those heavier rain bands with some thunderstorm activity possible in there, start to show up into the middle of the day. north bay first, then carrying on to through the east bay, the peninsula three 4:00 hour. and really, it's lingering around until dinnertime, so expect to expect it to be a soggy day
5:22 am
overall with those wind speeds. of course. also into the picture, we're looking at this dark mad purple on your screen 30, even 40, 50 mile an hour gusts there coming up from the south. so with the rain that's coming in in a short amount of time, we could be looking at some downed tree limbs. also some power issues as we track maybe an inch to two inches along the coastal ranges. taking it now into tomorrow. there is some more rain coming in tomorrow and a lot of it will start to push on east tracking into the sierra, where we could be looking at maybe 2 to 4ft of some fresh snow going now on into tomorrow and friday as well. seven day forecast, very active. so take a peek. right now we are looking at that stormy conditions today on into tomorrow. with those peeksks of sunshine. we could get even some more thunderstorm activity with that daytime heating. friday we are looking at some more showers but it's a little bit lighter. my biggest concern is today on into tomorrow. yes, we get a bit of a break and a weekend break there, but not so fast. winter is not done yet. i am looking at
5:23 am
another storm coming in on monday with those temperatures staying in the 50s. pretty much san francisco and bay area wide. so all of that winter gear. please keep it handy. mike. some commuters already have some wet roads out there, and some of our camera traffic cameras have already had use of their wiper over here. we had we couldn't see the roadway for a period of time. the drops seem to have cleared a little blurry here. just watch the slicker conditions as they develop. cinthia will help you track that. of course. she's talking about over the course of the morning, but you see the green highlights over here. san rafael near our camera and also down through tiburon and over here in the east bay, where there were patches of wet roadway from overnit sprinkles and starting to build throughout the morning. the build here for highway 37. typical timing typical spot for westbound out of vallejo and in toward novato. over here, westbound coming out of the altamont standard, slowing into livermore, no problem. dublin interchange, east bay or south bay, all at speeds so far. back to you. thanks so much, mike. helping children read next on today in the bay, the lingering challenges kids are facing post-pandemic and the way you

nonprofit group that promotes reading among children of members of the military serving abroad. they say that 20 minutes of reading a day with your child, and the mere presence of books in the home can have a tremendous impact on literacy. all the things that books can bring to someone, it's to me, it's more than just words on a page. reading is foundational. reading is an experience. good readers make good writers. good readers make good critical thinkers. i just i think books are fantastic. that was melanie sheridan with united through reading. her organization helps men and women serving away from home create storytime videos that a child can watch on demand with a copy of their own book. you can learn more at united through reading.org. that looks like some nice options there, right? yeah. well, next top story that we're following today, including attacked in prison. the new details we're learning about convicted killer scott peterson's reported

5:32 am
here as we go on through the mid-morning hours with more of that activity, possibly thunderstorms coming in right behind it. so let's take it in with storm ranger give you a little bit closer look here, neighborhood by neighborhood, up there into the north bay. we're also looking at some rain through parts of marin, up into sonoma, and stretching on into parts of napa counties to around yountville san franciscoco, dow along parts of highway one, seeing some light showers while we stay mostly dry down here through the south bay, picking up on a little bit of activity once you start heading over los gatos into the summit, so expect rain and some strong wind for today. bring everything inside that you want to keep safe. i'll be talking about when we can see those isolated thunderstorms. what are the ingredients for that? and also the heavy sierra snow, but also our chance of seeing some of that peak around here in the bay area. that will be exciting to track a very active weather day. but mike, we're looking at a wet golden gate bridge. are there any issues? no major issues. folks know how to deal with foggy conditions or slicker conditions, as you see. watch as the camera shows the cars coming toward us. folks. a little rooster tailing us, some mist
5:33 am
kicking up off the back of the car that might hit the folks on the windshield, making it tougher to see. that'ss the not as far as traction goes as well. cinthia showed you that radar activity north of the golden gate bridge, and that is creeping around the bay highway 37 at the top of the screen, a little more widespread with the volume and slowing. no slowing shows up over on the right side. concord highway four coming in out of pittsburgh and bay point still basically at the limit, though 242 does see some sensors slowing. we have the typical slowing out of the altamont pass all the way over on the right and all the way over on the left. a little more build for 880 south heading toward 92. typical build out of san leandro and in toward hayward. yesterday, vasco road saw early slowing. it was much longer travel time, about 25 minutes coming down out of marsh creek toward 580. but it's more this morning out of contra costa county. things are moving smoothly again. that rain will change things back to you. certainly will. thank you mike. president trump says peace in ukraine is now up to the russians. this after ukraine agreed to a cease fire in scott

mcgrew. all eyes now on the kremlin. yeah. all eyes. and the question is going to be can anybody trust putin to come to the table, agree to anything and keep his word? ukraine has agreed to stop shooting if the russians do, but there are no details other than that president trump says you have to stop fighting to talk. the agreement comes after negotiations with us and ukraine. in saudi arabia. russia was not there. the u.s. previously negotiated with russia without ukraine. we have also agreed to resume military supplies and intelligence to ukraine. our hopee is that the russians will say yes, that they will also agree. so the shooting will stop, the killing will stop, the dying will stop, and the talks can begin about how to end this w permanently in a way that's acceptable and enduring for both sides. now, ukraine's been very clear about what's acceptable. it wants security guarantees from t west, and putin has to agree to give back parts of ukraine. he took and agreed to peacekeepers
5:35 am
from a third country, like france, to be in ukraine to keep the peace. it is hard for many kremlin watchers to imagine russia conceding, but the ball is entirely in putin's court. a man the president trump says he trusts. president trump defended his tariffs at a meeting of business roundtable in washington, and mr. trump spoke about ukraine as well. the man you're going to hear speaking first is cisco ceo chuck robbins. first of all, congratulations on the ceasefire between ukraine and russia today. that was hugely significant, as you know. well, it's ukraine, but we hope to get russia. it turned out to be the you know, i've been saying that russia has been easier to deal with so far than ukraine, which is not supposed to be the way it is, but it is, and we hope to get russia. but we have a full cease fire from ukraine. that's good. tariffs against foreign steel and aluminum start today.

still trying to win him a retrial in the 2002 murder of his wife, laci, and their unborn son. the top two contenders in oakland's mayoral race are giving voters a better sense about their vision for the city. last night, retired congresswoman barbara lee and former council member lauren taylor squared off in a debate covering numerous issues in the 2022 mayoral race. taylor was narrowly defeated by the now recalled sheng thao. he considers himself a much needed change for voters. what oakland needs right now is something different. oakland needs fresh energy, new leadership, someone who is unencumberered by the existing establishment. lee, meantime, tried to appeal to voters as a veteran politician, warning them not to be fooled by her opponent's messaging. i also want to remind you that many of these decisions that were made that brought us to this crisis occurred by his votes when he was on the city council. so please don't be deceived by all of this. other candidates,

meantime, claim they were intentionally left out of the debate, which required candidates to raise at least $75,000 for their campaign to qualify. lee and taylor are the only ones who could meet that threshold. the special election takes place on march 15th. well, turning back to our storm coverage is wet. weather is moving into the bay area. the sierra is also set to see several feet of snow over the next few days.e have a live look this morning at 80 at castle peak. change not required just yet, but we anticipate that will probably be coming. cinthia pimentel is tracking the snowpack we're expected to see. yeah. there have been some lovely bluebird days up there for people in lake tahoe, but live camera right now it is looking dark and ominous. as we get ready to go back into winter mode, there is a winter storm warning that will carry us through the day today and also into the late hours of thursday as you notice the pink on your screen, but also that light shade of brown gusty winds as you start to climb up into those
5:42 am
higher elevations. so yes, about 2 to 4ft of some fresh snow in the coming days. very gusty wind that could make travel dangerous if not impossible at times. so over the next couple of hours we see that mix of some showers and also some snow down into the basin. but those snow levels will start to come down as we go on into later on this evening to about grass valley, placerville. so 80 and 50 just going to be pretty messy over the next 24 to 48 hours. the back country also watching for avalanches as we get that heavy snow coming down in the next couple of days. but this could bring a boost to our snowpack. maybe in the next couple of days, we could be bumping these numbers up to about 100%, really looking good for the north central. we could recover in the south a little bit, but definitely something to watch as we get ready for the ski or skiers and snowboarders. all th activity coming your way. mike, rain on our lens through richmond. absolutely. that rain. and then we're talking about screening for chance. but you're right. no requirements for the sierra right now. the rain here. no

crowd gathers at the bay bridge and the rain is coming in. so that's the time the commute will start to see some changes, but right now it's not such a big gathering. we have the middle lanes and they'll push to the outward lanes. we have the metering lights activated at about 532. so that will be an issue for folks coming out of the bay. just the metering lights. but that does mean the speeds improved on the span. there's just slowing at the metering lights and then get the lanes narrow getting up the incline. no surprises here. little build through richmond highway 37 highway 4 we watch those typical spots, everything else moves well. walnut creek interchange nice highway 24 through the caldecott. things reopened without any problems after the overnight maintenance work out of the altamont. the only slowing we see dublin gradd the castro valley. y'all move well, a little slowing for 880 southbound coming out of san leandro in toward hayward. typical timing for that build. and we're looking at the timing for vasco. we have jumped up to 25 minutes from marsh creek down to 580. that's your way out of contra costa county to 580, itself a typical pattern. back
