tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  March 12, 2025 6:00am-7:00am PDT

6:00 am
now at six, the first in a series of storms arrives in the bay area this morning. you can see on our satellite radar we are tracking when this new round for us is a small company. you know, these tariffs are terrifying in many ways. more tariffs taking effect overnight. as we get a new update on inflation, the impact it will have on local businesses and the
6:01 am
price you pay at the pump. plus fighting back against layoffs at oakland schools. the push today to get the district to reserve its cuts. this is today in the bay. here we go wednesday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia and i'm ginger conejero saab in for marcus washington, who's got the morning off and might be nice to have a little morning off because it's going to start showering raining in a little bit, picking up just about everywhere as we go on into the late hours. so a good idea to get stormranger it can send you those alerts, you know, minute by minute tracking the rain. there it is, san bruno mountain, and it does have that cross scan, meaning that it can pick up things in the horizontal and the vertical. so a powerful tool that will be getting a lot of activity tracking it for us as we go throughout the day. so here it is right now, tracking some light rain through parts of the north bay. so as soon as you get over the richmond san rafael bridge into marin county, up park, santa rosa, and just some
6:02 am
light activity through parts of napa county as well. san francisco, good morning to you. also looking at some activity there through parts of ocean beach down into san bruno, right there on storm ranger, with the gusty winds that will be coming in from the ocean later on today. parts of the south bay still staying mostly dry. looking at just some sprinkles there through los gatos and the summit, but expect a lot of storm activity to come our way. the rain heaviest bands i'm looking at mid morning to the evening commute, with the winds gusting anywhere from 20 to 30, with those ridge tops possibly even higher 50 plus. the sierra also going to be slip and just absolutely downright dangerous over the next 48 hours with that snow. 2 to 4ft that will be watching. but mike, both of us watching the rain, where are we heading? you know what we're showing? what? i borrowed your radar, cinthia. i hope it's okay, but i wanted to emphasize the fact that the traffic and the weather computers, the systems are tied together. and that's why we can give you the
6:03 am
road weather index. we see the radar above the roadways and there may be some damp roadways continuing richmond bridge. cinthia called that out earlier, and i wanted to show you the lens. we can't focus on the traffic because the water is on the lens. that may be a similar situation if your wipers aren't in good condition, so make sure they are. we'll continue to track the live cameras out here, but getting back to just the traffic right where the rain is falling right now, we see a little more slowing. an early build there, and some green highlighting and splotches throughout the east bay and the north bay. as we look at the rest of the drive, a smooth flow of traffic. as far as those speed sensors go. your typical build now for 880 coming down through hayward and the south bay. cleared from the first slowing. back to you. all right. thanks a lot, mike. new tariffs on imported goods went into effect overnight from metals to fuel. and in the last hour the head of the european union put tariffs on goods headed there from the u.s. today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us live with the tariffs on aluminum on steel. and kris the impact on fuel prices.ood morning. well good morning to you ginger a
6:04 am
little bit of good news this morning. and that is that because in california we are not dependent on canadian crude or canadian refined products. these fuel prices are likely to go unchanged because of the tariffs. we did talk with an analyst from gasbuddy who says that any variation or flucuctuation in prices will be because of other factors. right now in california, prices are about $0.20 lower than they were last year. typically, we do see increases throughout the spring into early summer because of the changeover to cleaner summer gasoline that's mandated in california by the air resources board, as well as refinery maintence, which is still ongoing ahead of the summer driving season. those factors usually push prices up, but with the refinery fire already having boosted prices significantly in february, it is maybe likely that we could have already seen prices peak. so you will need
6:05 am
every penny that you save at the pump, because tariffs on imported goods will have an impact on all things aluminum, like your favorite canned drink. walnut creek's kelly craft brewing company is feeling a triple whammy because they use millions of aluminum cans from canada every year. they use canadian barley, and they're bracing for an increase in the price of building materials they need for planned expansion. tariffs will eventually impact their bottom line, and they say eventually the customers bar tab. i think that's the hardest part of all this, is that there is no ability to plan. and our heads constantly on a swivel. now, in just the last hour or so, the european union announced retaliatory tariffs on american goods primarily focused on goods coming from republican states. the eu tariffs will impact steel and aluminum, but also agricultural goods like soybeans, beef, poultry and other produce. also textiles, motorcycles. bourbon will be more expensive for europeans to
6:06 am
buy as well. now the tariffs on imported goods just went into effect at midnight for us, so it might be a minute before consumers start to feel the pinch. or maybe not. we'll be talking with consumers to see what's happening in san jose. kris sanchez today in the bay a lot of uncertainty until we find out what those answers and that impact is going to be. thanks a lot, kris. the u.s. department of education, laying off about half of its workforce, about 1300 career employees are receiving termination notices today. they are being given an opportunity to return to office, to turn in government property and clean out their desks. included in the reduction in force is nearly 600 employees who accepted voluntary resignation opportunities for retirement. nbc news reports all employees working out of the department's regional offices in san francisco, new york, boston, chicago, dallas and cleveland will be fired as part of the layoffs. california educators are among those expressing
6:07 am
concern. the staff who are being laid off were the staff who were making sure that special ed students were getting the federal funding they needed. there's a whole bunch of other hosts of programs, including lunches for poor students that come in. our federal government partially pays for. u.s. education secretary linda mcmahon says president trump's directive is to eventually shut the entire department down, but that would require an act of congress. secretary mcmahon says the department will still deliver on special education funding and other statutory programs. oakland school board members tonight will vote on painful budget cuts approved last month. the board cuts include up to 150 layoffs. the district faces a deficit approaching $100 million, along with declining enrollment. pink slips must go out by the 15th. tonight's meeting takes place at 630. ahead of that, at 6:00, the teachers union is organizing a rally. outside the meeting for
6:08 am
riders. there's no change in the paralyzing vta transit strike. but in a new development, the agency has filed a legal complaint against the local amalgamated transit union. attorneys claim the union is violating a no strike clause in that contract, and the union, meanwhile, argues that the contract expired march 3rd, which led to the strike. this will be the third straight day vta light rail and bus service is at a standstill. vta is offering workers a 9% wage increase over three years, while the union is seeking double that amount over the same span. let's take a live look across the bay area on this wednesday morning. we've been telling you a series of storms set to arrive in the bay area. in fact, some people already got some sprinkles this morning. forecaster cinthia pimentel is in for kari. she's keeping her eye on these storms. yeah, and everybody's going to get a different timing of when we see those heavier bands. so let's take a look at san rafael right now. we saw some rain on the lens. it is light right there through parts of 101. but
6:09 am
look at that time as we go on into ten, 11, 12, even 1:00 with those heavier showers coming on through, and you notice that the temperatures not really going to warm up much from those low 50s down into fremont, it's different. we look at the morning starting off mostly cloudy in those mid 50s, with still some light showers coming in there around lunchtime, but those heavier bands will push on through for the east bay and the south bay as we go on into the 2 to 3:00 hour. this is a series of storms not only for today, but into tomorrow, friday and the weekend. a bit of a break before we get some more right after that. so the middle of march downright soggy. we'll continue to talk about the impacts. what i want you to do to prepare for the next couple of days. very active 7-day forecast. but mike wants to help you out finding those cheaper gas prices this morning. do what we can. we heard kris report about tariffs and potential other impact on gas prices. we did see a peak, but it may have been for a couple of other factors. as patrick de haan was talking about. right now, we're going to start in alameda
6:10 am
county, where it's a shade under $4, just barely. pleasanton 3.99 at 76, in circle k on first street, a little bit lower. now for the south bay. change for sasan jose'sow 408 to now 405 at most stop on camden avenue. and for those in the south bay, we head up to solano county for sam's club for their low in vacaville, 409 a gallon. again, we referenced the gasbuddy.com where you can find those prices, where you're going or where you are on the roadways. let's see where you're going. a smooth drive for most of the bay, although that rain is coming in the north bay really getting just the most of it here anywhere south of the golden gate bridge. a pretty mild drive right now. we see this slowing 37 and into richmond and westbound 80 in toward berkeley. the build here westbound 80. the bay bridge toll plaza true to form center lanes first and then pushing to the outer lanes because you can take those center lanes all the way across the bay bridge. you don't have to change as you lose lanes heading up the incline. smooth drive throughout the tri-valley, the east bay. typical slowing
6:11 am
little dabs of slowing easing off the brake, easing off the accelerator in hayward. no major issues heading south into san jose and the north 101 is recovered from the first slowing. we'll see another in about a half hour in san jose. back to you. a lot to keep your eyes on, but mike's got i it vered. he absolutely does. now, driverless taxis are headed to silicon valley. next, we dig into waymo's expansion plans as many still remain hesitant. you want tariffs? we got more tariffs today. let's go out to the future to see what wall street thinks. we got really good inflation data. we'll talk about that coming up. and some remarkable new discoveries being made in the ancient city of pompeii. the exclusive inside look into the once in a generation dig that's taking place right now. you're watching today in the bay.
6:12 am
6:13 am
6:14 am
past the hour. let's go to cocoa county. discovery bay. good morning to you. we are looking at a dry start. temperatures in the 50s. cloudy and some scary looking clouds and wind that will roll around through the middle part of the day. notice that wind icon at around 1:00. the heavier bands start to show up for you there too. through three, four, 5:00 and dwindling down into about dinner time seven there for you. it's a microclimate weather alert day.
6:15 am
we'll talk about the storm headed our way in the next couple of hours. coming up in a w minutes. that's if you're staying in discovery bay. if you're leaving, i'll take you to that commute in just a couple of minutes. but i wanted to show you the live look here. golden gate bridge shows you some of the conditions we're dealing with in san francisco and north of there. with the rain having hit over the last few hours, we're looking at those changes coming in. cynthia's got your forecast and we'll talk about those conditions coming up. well good morning. very happy wednesday to you. lyft says it will offer a new lyft silver for seniors. it's a simplified version of the app with easy customer support. you can look for that later this year. travel stocks fell as airlines like united worry people have already pulled back on taking trips. goldman sachs dialing its predictions back on the american economy. economists at jp morgan chase increasing their predictions of a recession. now, we did get some good news. inflation isn't growing as quickly, to be clear. prices are still up, but not growing as
6:16 am
much as we thought. prices up 2/10 of a percent from last month. this is the first inflation that falls entirely within the trump presidency. remember, he's only been president for a little bit more than 50 days. and it does not account for tariffs, which started after the data was gathered. here's the president at a business roundtable hosted by cisco ceo chuck robbins. apple's tim cook was also there. business people very worried about tariffs and not just the cost of tariffs but their unpredictability. this on again off again on again. the white house press secretary defended trump's tariffs yesterday but got a key point wrong the same way the president does. american companies pay american tariffs, not the other country. tariffs are a tax hike on foreign countries that again have been ripping us off. tariffs are a tax cut for the american people. and the president is a staunch advocate of tax cuts. as you know he campaigned on no taxes on tips no taxes on overtime, no
6:17 am
taxes on social secury benefits. he is committed to all three of those things, and he expects congress to pass them later this year. i'm sorry. have you ever paid a tariff? because i have. they don't get charged on foreign companies. they get charged on the importers. and i think it's insulting that you are trying to test my knowlwlede of economics and the decisions that this president has made. i'm now regret giving a question to the associated press. now, there is a way to get the cost of a tariff on china to fall on the chinese by forcing manufacturers over there to lower prices to wholesalers, which is what walmart is trying to do, get their suppliers to cut prices, then sell the item to you with no price cut, no price hike either. we'll see. quite the scene outside the white house as tesla showroom came to the president. president trump says he wanted to show support for tesla by buying one. president trump drove a red one. tesla stock is crumpled with the brand damage caused by its boss, elon musk, and critics giving
6:18 am
the car some pretty harsh nicknames. asked by a conservative news outlet about people protesting tesla dealerships, president trump said he'd be willing to label them domestic terrorists. trump in the past has criticized tesla as saying they crashed too often and don't go as far as promised. speaking of cars, waymo is coming to the peninsula. the alphabet owned self-driving taxis will start picking up passengers in palo alto mountain view in some parts south, like los altos. the areas are specific because waymo maps them out carefully. this video, by the way, is shot on my iphone. i was just taking a ride and i thought, you know, i love living in the future. so i sent it to my mom. yeah. now note there are waymo's in san francisco. there are waymo's in palo alto. you cannot take a waymo from san francisco to palo alto, right? the area in between hasn't been mapped yet. the great wilds of redwood city. you're still exploring. what'd your mom say about that? oh, she loved it. yeah. no. other people in my family are like, no, i'm not getting in that. yeah, it's
6:19 am
totally safe. it's fine. yeah, well, exciting stuff. it's just it's a privilege to see both sides, right? the driverless cars and still learning how to get your driver's license behind the wheel. i got three teenagers wanting their licenses, so i don't know. no way, no way, no, i love it. thanks a lot, scott. well, trending this morning, maybe the bay bridge series is a thing of the past, but baseball fans can now embrace what the san jose giants are calling battle of the bay 2.0 this april 2nd, the california league team says it will host the oakland ballers in an exhibition game at excite ballpark in san jose. it's also being called the first time ever an mlb affiliate has played an independent league team, so we'll see who comes out on top. also trending this morning brand new discoveries in pompeii 2000 years after the eruption of mount vesuvius, archeologists have unearthed parts of a massive villa, cluding a red banquet hall with near life size figures on the wall. now it depicts an
6:20 am
initiation ceremony celebrating dionysus, the greek god of wine and ecstasy. the villa also includes a private bathroom, which was rare for homes unless the resident was wealthy. archeologists have also discovered two skeletons barricaded inside a small room. this room that provided sort of sanctuary and safety potentially in their heads, became their tomb. now you can see the full story on the today show, including a walkthrough of the entire site. that's from 7 a.m. right after today in the bay. that looks really, really cool. it's very fascinating. it really is. unearth had safe rooms even back then, right? exactly. wow. interesting. and to think about that banquet hall, you know, and just how massive that very, very cool. and the private bathroom. a lot of people want that, i know. yeah. no kidding. exactly. hey, we're talking about these series of storms that are hitting the bay area, the first one today, and it's going to be really windy, i understand. yeah, there is a wind advisory for just about everyone. we're looking at some really scary i'm
6:21 am
going to put it at that outlooks with the wind graphics that i'll show you coming up right here. but right now storm ranger is looking at some light rain through parts of the north bay. we're starting to get those alerts on our phones and watches throughout the morning of when that light rain is moving in up there through san francisco, parts of the coastline, some light rain where it could get gusty later on. today down here into the south bay, we're staying mostly dry, but looking at some activity with the mount eminem scam right there through highway 17, you know how highway 17 gets when it rains. it really pours out there. let's take it hour by hour for you. we start in those 50s really not going to warm up there much throughout the day, so keep that jacket on hand and the umbrella. try to hold on tight to it as we track those gusty winds starting to pick up as we go on into lunchtime and into the afternoon, that activity really starts to move northeast and down into the south bay, where we could be looking at some isolated thunderstorms. so the band right there for the mid morning to early afternoon hours
6:22 am
comes on in with the popcorn like feature right there right behind me. that's where we're getting some of the cold air wrapping in and also building the chance for some thunderstorms and hail activity. there is the winindpeeds for you where we're going to try to hold on best as we can through the middle part of the day. 40, even 50 mile an hour gusts there coming up from the south. so really starting to rattle the windows a little bit. don't get scared. it will start to die down as that storm pushes on east into the evening hours and into the sierra it goes, we're looking at about 2 to 4ft of snow as we go on into tonight, thursday, and even on into friday. we've had some bluebird gorgeous days, but now we're back into winter. and if you know anybody headed that way, maybtell them to hold off, because this could be looking at some whiteout conditions and some avalanche watches in the back country. seven-day forecast for you, san francisco and along the peninsula, very active. so let's take a look at it. we're looking at the rest of the week very active right there.
6:23 am
wednesday, thursday, friday we take a little bit of a breather and pause and rebound. the temperatures just a touch for the weekend. but there's some chances that those storms start to pick on up again as we go on late monday, late sunday, on into our next week inland. very active as well. that chance of thunderstorms, windy conditions, maybe even some isolated hail and snow on our peaks. look for that as you're making your drive safely over the next couple of days. again, weekend looks slightly better, but that series of storms continue as we go on deeper into the month starting on monday. mike. the lanes nearly full at the bay bridge toll plaza, which is not a surprise, but just want to show you this is what you can expect. as we're looking at the drive out of oakland and off the berkeley curve and the maze, everything's pretty standard as far as the build there. the early slowing started out of richmond holding steady clearing. by the time you pass central and now out of richmond westbound toward the north bay, that bridge is going to get crowded on the approach. highway 37 continues to see the build, and we've seen that radar activity up in the north bay. so
6:24 am
that is the most impacted by the weather, some slowing on highway 24 out of walnut creek and some slowing for vasco road. we're at just under a half hour off of marsh creek. back to you. thanks a lot, mike. well, we know that the pandemic took a hit on reading skills for young children, but coming up next on today in the bay, we dive into some of the lingering challenges that kids are facing and the way you can help your student catch up. but first, a reminder that applications are officially open for nbc, bay area and telemundo 48 for local grants program. for more details, scan that qr code on your screen and it will take you right to our website. the application window runs through april 11th. we'll be right back.
6:25 am
6:26 am
6:27 am
the new this morning. an unfortunate reminder that our kids reading skills still have recovered from the pandemic. according to the nation's report card put out last year by the department of education, 4 40% f fourth graders and 33% of eighth graders read at a level that is considered below basic. we spoke with a nonprofit group that promotes reading among children of members of the military serving abroad. they say that 20 minutes a day o reading with your child, and the mere presence of books in your home can have a tremendous impact on
6:28 am
literacy. all the things that books can bring to someone i. it's to me, it's more than just words on a page. reading is foundational. reading is an experience. good readers make good writers. good readers make good critical thinkers. i just i think books are fantastic. i do too. well, that was melanie sheridan with united through reading. her organization helps men and women serving away from home create storytime videos that a child can watch on demand with a copy of their own book. you can learn more at united through reading.org. and we've got a lot more ahead at 630, including the return of rain. a live look at the golden gate bridge. cinthia is tracking what should be several days of wet weather. look at those slick roads and mike is monitoring a potentially slick commute. plus the race for mayor in oakland. it heats up as the two top contenders face off in a debate. their plans for a city now struggling to bounce back.
6:29 am
6:30 am
6:31 am
a death investigation in the north bay. two people shot and killed inside a home in fairfield. we're live at the scene with new details. police just gave us moments ago. president trump says ukraine has agreed to a cease fire if russia stops shooting. two plus, we are
6:32 am
on storm watch. here's a live look at our storm ranger. the bay area's only mobile doppler radar. our team is timing out its arrival and some extended wet weather. this is today in the bay. and good wednesday morning to you. i'm ginger conejero saab filling in for marcus washington. it's lovely to have you here. i'm laura garcia. well, it's a good thing you're indoors today. we've been monitoring the storm this morning. here's some new video. that rain already coming down in some parts of the bay area. this is from san leandro. cinthia pimentel is following the forecast for us, so we're all going to see it, but at different times. yeah, definitely. right now it is picking up through the north bay. and then those heavier bands will come about as we go through the middle part of the day. so expect scenes like this for your drive, people picking up the water right in front of you. so just everybody be nice to each other as we try to get through these series of storms. like i said, they're those bands start to pick up as we go on into the mid morning for the
6:33 am
north bay, intensifying maybe even downright nasty at times as we go on into two 3:00 for us and even on into the evening commute. starting starting to die down a little bit as we go on into those overnight hours. but some snow could be there on the peaks down here in the south bay and along highway 17. so we'll talk about that as far as temperatures go. expect to wear the jackets day in and day out today and into tomorrow, those temperatures coming down into the 50s. so we thought we were going into spring yesterday and through the weekend. but we are back into winter mode. lots to talk about. definitely an active pattern now. mike. the san mateo bridge, very popular this morning. yeah, you showed the golden gate bridge. it was wet, but not so heavily populated here in the san mateo bridge right now is where we see that bump up in the volume taillights away from hayward, over toward the peninsula side, heading into foster city, joining with 101. the arrows show you the commute where those commute builds are typically in the morning, and we see that a little slowing for
6:34 am
the nimitz out of hayward and down toward the dumbarton bridge in the east bay. we're looking for the contra costa county slowing for highway four and a build into pleasant hill. nothing dramatic at eastshore freeway, richmond bridge bay bridge. there may be an incident mid span waiting to see if the bridge crew gives us more information. so far we see still movement at the toll plaza. if there is an incident that needs to be cleared on the span, they may slow the metering lights that will make it more congested. but right now, standard build out of oakland. back to you. thanks so much getting busy out there, mike. well, new overnight in the north bay. two people have been shot and killed at a home in fairfield today in the bay's. bob redell joins us live from the scene. he's been out there this morning. are police revealing any more details? yes. we do know that two people have been shot and killed, but we don't know the circumstances surrounding this crime here in fairfield. but fairfield police tell us that they are not looking for an active suspect. there is no active search for that person. so is that because the suspect has been arrested or
6:35 am
is dead here at the scene, fairfield police won't say, but we are outside the single level home on walnut avenue, which is about a mile away from where it intersects with pennsylvania avenue, a major thoroughfare here. and in fairfield. we believe the coroner's office is here on the scene. they are inside the garage of this home. a fairfield police tell us they were called out here around 1230 this morning for a possible shooting. we know at one point there was a body on the ground next to the honda suv parked in the garage. there's also an evidence marker nearby. and again, within the past hour, public information officer has confirmed that a second person was killed and that there is no peeived threat to the public reporting live here in fairfield. bob redell today in the bay. all right. interesting there. thank you so much, bob. president trump says peace in ukraine is now up to the russians. this after ukraine agreed to a cease fire. all eyes on the kremlin. scott? absolutely. good morning to you. the question is, can anybody
6:36 am
trust putin to come to the table, agree to anything and keep his word? ukraine has agreed to stop shooting if the russians do. but there are no details other than that president trump says you got to stop fighting to talk. the agreement with ukraine comes after negotiations with us in saudi arabia. russia was not there. the u.s. previously negotiated with russia without ukraine. we have also agreed to resume military supplies and intelligence to ukraine. our hope is that the russians will say yes, that they will also agree. so the shooting will stop, the killing will stop, the dying will stop. and the talks can begin about how to end this war permanently in a way that's acceptable and enduring for both sides. ukraine's been very clear about what's acceptable to them. it wants security guarantees from the west, and putin has to agree to give back parts of ukraine. he took and agreed to peacekeepers from a third country like france in ukraine
6:37 am
to keep the peace. now, it is hard for many kremlin watchers to imagine russia conceding to that. but the ball is entirely in putin's court. a man president trump says he trusts. president trump defended his tariffs at a meeting of a business roundtable in washington, and mr. trump spoke abou ukraine as well. now, the man you'll hear speaking first is cisco ceo chuck robbins. first of all, congratulations on the ceasefire between ukraine and russia today. that was hugely snificant, as you know. well, it's ukraine, but we hope to get russia. it turned out to be the y know, i've been saying that russia has been easier to deal with so far than ukraine, which is not supposed to be the way it is, but it is, and we hope to get russia. but we have a full cease fire from ukraine. that's good. tariffs against foreign steel and aluminum start today. president trump had threatened to double those tariffs against canada, after ontario said it would
6:38 am
charge americans extra for canadian electricity. ontario backed down, and so too did the president. the house, meantime, has passed a bill that will keep the government open. past friday, all republicans but one, thomas massie, voted for all democrats, but one, maine's jared golden, voted against it. golden said it was important to keep the government open. massie said it was time to draw up a real budget. a big vote on the house floor. the republicans stuck together, stood together, and we had one democrat vote with us to do the right thing, and that is to fund the government. this was a clean cr. it freezes funding. it's a responsible thing to do. now. it's not a clean, continuing resolution. a clean cr says keep funding where it is. we'll deal with it later. this bill is complex, 99 pages. it has to go to the senate. lastly, department of education has told all of its workers to stay home today. it's going to cut its workforce nearly in half.
6:39 am
ginger. thanks a lot, scott. here back home or back here at home, i should say. the top two contenders in oakland's mayoral race are giving voters a better sense about what their vision is for the city. last night, retired congresswoman barbara lee and former council member lauren taylor squared off in a debate covering numerous issues. now, in 2022, in the mayoral race, taylor was narrowly defeated by the now recalled sheng thao. he considers himself a much needed change for voters. what oakland needs right now is something different. oakland needs fresh energy, new leadership, someone who is unencumbered by the existing establishment. lee, meanwhile, tried to appeal to voters as a veteran politician, warning them not to be fooled by her opponent's messaging. i also want to remind you that many of these decisions that were made that brought us to this crisis occurred by his votes when he
6:40 am
was on the city council. so please don't be deceived by all of this. other candidates, meanwhile, claim they were intentionally left out of the debate, which required candidates to raise at least $75,000 for their campaign to qualify. lee and taylor are the only ones who met that threshold. the special election takes place on april 15th. turning back to our storm coverage as this wet weather moves into the bay area, the sierra is also set to see several feet of snow over the next few days. this is an actual live look right now at highway 80 at castle peak. you see already some activity up there with the storm. now the chains aren't required yet, but you certainly should check ahead as the conditions could quickly change. cinthia pimentel is tracking not only the storm here in the bay area, but the snowpack up in the sierra. yeah, and it could, you know, go up towards that 100% of average as we go through the next couple of days. and those series of storms rolling in. but live look right now over lake tahoe, we see those ominous cumulus clouds
6:41 am
building. we will be under this winter storm warning now through about 11:00 tomorrow night. so travel very dangerous at times as we look towards a couple of inches there piling up in the basin, 8 to 18, 2 to 4ft in the ridges are possible, with those gusts anywhere from about 20 to 45, even 100 plus. as you make your way over the sierra. so for the next couple of hours and the next couple of days, we are looking at this active pattern continuing for today, tomorrow and friday. so even if you try to get up there and, you know, plan ahead, you could be looking at being stuck on the roadways for more time than anticipated. i'll give you a break there for saturday maybe. what more storms are rolling in as we go on into next week. so here's where we could make a little bit of a recovery on our snowpack. be it ththat itrovides about a third of our water supply there through the north, central and southern part of the sierra, we could be looking at maybe

in the city, we continue with the last week of the central subway tunnel repairs. so starting the 15th saturday, we should probably see that subway come back again on service. but right now that means surface street busses, meaning you'll have to wait in perhaps rain. they keep that in. note if you use the t or the k t as an alternate over here. a new incident just appeared on the screen. we'll check that, but i believe it's eastbound. heading away from the bay. the san mateo bridge at hesperian. typical bill for 880 southbound, 680 southbound, as well as the south bay itself. back to you. thanks so much, mike. well, get ready for cannabis cafes by the beach next. the surfside city going green. all thanks to a new measure that was passed by california voters. and of course, we continue to keep an eye on wall street this morning, a live look of the dow jones industrial index this morning. up this as it actually climbed about 200 points earlier this morning after the soft inflation report and a rebound in tech stocks. plus marking a special anniversary for the girl scouts,
