we are continuing to follow this weather. right now it's moving in the valley and take a look, laurie sent in this video to us of that water flowing right now and this is what a lot of people are seeing across our state. >> we've seen it coming down heavy in spots like tucson, queen creek, getting stocked with rain and iris talking about dust. i believe we have marked graves on the phone from dps right now. what can you tell us about the conditions, where are we seeing the hardest hit areas? >> this storm pounded tucson as you know pretty well this morning and impacted pounded so hard that we had to close -- and in fact it pounded so hard that we had to close one area of the city that was flooded and we also had to close the

11:19 am
>> we haven't seen that rain in the valley just as of yet but we are starting to see some stronger storms developing in the valley and the dust, you just heard the alert -- we are now under a warning through noon so if you can avoid travel for the next hour or so because visibility is dropping. let's take you out and show you an example of the dust rolling in. danielle lerner actually took this photo on the 10 and elliott , not driving but in the passenger seat and you can see that's what's impacting many in the valley. are valley camera unfortunately went dark there but you can see this -- this is the one we were watching earlier as that dust rolls in, initially through queen creek. visibility has improved somewhat there and that tells us that as the rain is falling behind the dust it's really helping to improve the visibility a bit but that line of dust moving into the phoenix metro right now into the
11:20 am
will be a big impact here over the next hour or so. we are now under a dust storm warning, the entire phoenix metro, all of maricopa county -- or at least all of the western portions of maricopa county and that northwest pocket of pinal county are under that dust storm warning through noon today. so let me take you around with the abc15 desert doppler. we had storms to our south all morning long and they have sent gusty winds our way what has helped kick up some of the dust. as we track it on desert doppler we can kind of still pick it up here rate between mesa -- that line you are seeing right at mesa where the a is, that's where the beginning band of dust is as it's moving to the north- northwest. so if you are mesa or tempe and you are starting to get that dust moving in, scottsdale, this will move into south scottsdale next. again, that line of dust is crossing the b line highway as
11:21 am
time -- at times less than a quarter of a mile and we are getting the rain and storms behind it, first that strongest storm right over the queen creek and apache junction area, and this is producing quite a bit of rainfall so if you are in queen creek or apache junction, gold ng or even southeast gilbert, this is producing some very heavy rain. that potential is there for flooding as we go through the next couple of hours so again if you can avoid travel that will be your best bet. and we've got another batch of storms filling in, so it really the southeast valley is getting it both from the east side and the southwest side as we track another storm moving in from about maricopa up to the northeast, up into ahwatukee and spots right along the 10. so again, avoiding travel is going to be your best bet as the storms come together right over the southeast valley, and again on top of some of that dust that is already blowing through. and this is just the beginning.
11:22 am
as we head into two -- tonight and tomorrow. over the next 24-48 hours, heavy rains, flash flooding, those will be the biggest threats you have to look out for but we could get strong winds and again that desperate -- and we're -- and again that dust threat we are getting again . today is just the beginning of this as we get a surge in monsoon motu >> stick with us as we track this every step of the way. and our calling danielle lerner is on the phone just along the i- 10. where are you and what are you seeing? >> reporter: hi, dan. i pulled off because right at elliott i could see the wall of dust coming in so i pulled off and i am actually at kyrie and
11:23 am
just so sick and the winds were blowing as well and i could see even just ahead of me on elliott the visibility was just getting worse so i have been waiting this out and iris mentioned the rain coming behind the dust storms. looks like now we are starting to get rain here i am, and that does seem to be -- here where i am and that seems to be lifting the dust but we also have strong wind gusts here blowing the debris around so i am just doing what iris always tells us to do and pulling aside and waiting it out. >> danielle, this is justin, you are pulled over buar other people pulling over as well? are you seeing more folks just trying to take cover? >> justin actually when i was on i-10 before i could see the wall of dust clearly i could tell something was going on because people tend to start slowing down so people were definitely slowing down and getting off the freeway. looks like people have continued on their way down elliotts and not too many people pulling off but i definitely see them going slow for sure.
11:26 am
come check out your tv. see that massive wall of dust rolling into the valley? this is are phoenix hospital valley camera pointed to the east southeast and you can actually see the dust rolling in. we are under a dust storm warning with visibility dropping to less than a quarter of a mile as this rolls in. again that warning is in effect until noon. this is pushing into phoenix and tempe and dropping visibility quickly.
11:29 am
11:30 am
coming in actually from southern arizona. this is perhaps the wash there in the old public -- pueblo but boy did they get hit by heavy rain this morning. >> we've already seen some parts of the valley getting hit with really heavy rain. tracking this rain and dust and here is a look at the rain from judy walsh. we've been talking with danielle lerner that big wall of dust. excuse me, danielle said she had to pull over and adot telling folks in the chandler area -- all of those places just seeing that big wall of dust. >> let's bring in meteorologist iris hermosillo. what are we seeing?
11:31 am
this phoenix valley camera. this one is read by the abc15 studios and that dust has moved in over phoenix. we are located right near 44th street and van buren and that's where the dust is now. it is continuing to push west and it's moving into downtown phoenix, or at least toward downtown phoenix and quickly racing our way. we are talking a big wall of dust. the phoenix hospital valley camera is back up and you can see state route 51 behind it, that mas pushing in and pushing across the valley, so tracking from the southeast valley up to the northwest. central phoenix, if you had plans to drive up state route 51, this is going to move your way and it's quickly racing your way dropping visibility quickly, so avoid travel if you can until the dust settles. we are under a dust storm
11:32 am
show you if we can take -- a look at our weather computer, this is for the entire phoenix metro and actually here's our abc15 live drive. where are they, aaron? are producer? okay, they are right here on the 16 at this time and it looks like they are getting a little bit of rain but the visibility is not bad right now in that area on u.s. 60, but you can see the rain is coming down in other spots. this facing towards the 60, and we've got heavy downpours out near apache junction, and the potential is there for a storm near apache junction to produce flooding if not flash flooding.
11:35 am
this weather alert across the valley and danielle lerner is in the live drive, i believe on the u.s. 60 right now. tucson is also getting pounded, 101 north-bounders where the live drive is at right now actually. >> and you are seeing a lot of different weather, talking from dust moving in to various parts and also the rain. take a look at this here, this is one of our valley cameras, the i-10 eastbound right at the we want to talk right now with jim bomer from aaa. how are we doing? what are you guys seeing? >> do we have jim, is jim there? >> we are working to get jim with aaa, just trying to check in and see -- see about the
11:36 am
crews out there. and iris, you have something? >> yes i want to take you to one of our valley cameras. we've been watching this for the last 30 minutes or so as the dust has been rolling in. this is -- this is the phoenix hospital -- children's hospital valley camera. we were watching the slowly making its way toward the 50 freeway and it's over the freeway now, but you can still see the freeway. it's not terrible, but know that behind this batch of dust, that could certainly lead you to visibility of less than a quarter of a mile so this will be a visibility impact for travelers out there. make sure you are, taking it -- a, taking it sl if you can avoid the travel, that's your best bet. >> we now have jim on the phone checking in with aaa, are there, jim? jim? >> yes, yes, i can hear you. >> jim, this is just in with abc15. we are seeing our crews out on
11:37 am
is out on the 101 and where are you seeing the hardest hit areas? >> we are seeing more volume just down so. -- south. it's been very busy, rescuing stranded motorists. >> and this is dancing -- dan spindle. what advice do you give to motorists? we try to prepare them before the storm hits but here they are out on the roads after the storm has hit. what do they need to remember? >> what people should do is remember of course don't drive through the rain has washed up a lot of debris and that's what we deal with a lot. >> great advice. jim bomer with aaa of arizona, again hopefully you have prepared for this kind of thing and you pull off to the side when conditions are like this. the dust and rain can make things a mess out there.
11:38 am
phone now as well and i know we have trouble spots from i-17 in the past few days. what is that looking like right now? >>gentlemen, where we are now is monitoring the conditions from the control room at the traffic operations center near the i- 17/durango curve, so are operators are able to monitor the conditions and as you've been talking about with the dust storm first rolling in and affecting the southeast valley, we are of course know, you need to be prepared to wait some things out. if you haven't taken to the road and you are watching the broadcast just know that it might be time to just wait it out. let the dust wall move into the valley and settle down. of course we are expecting a very busy next 24 to 36 hours as the rain starts to move in. so that will be words to the wise in terms of driving and that will
11:39 am
the roadways and give yourself some extra travel distance behind the vehicle in front of you. you want to be able to make sure you have enough braking distance there and really if the conditions are severe, make sure you are ready to pull off and of course there will be plenty of discussions about the need to avoid driving into flooded washes and lower lying areas. >> much for that great advice. again they are working hard and preparing for all of the rain we anticipate tomorrow so right now it's hitting just parts of the valley. >> in our own jason valentine is out there in the valley, where are you, jason? >> we are near 48th street and guadalupe just in south phoenix. this is looking back toward ahwatukee and the storm has just whipped through here about as fast as you could blink. it came with dust and rain and
11:40 am
if you look out here to the east, you can still see some of the line of dust out toward chandler, and if you come back out this direction looking back over toward phoenix to the north and that's where you can still see the dust moving. look at that american flag, just straight out on the pool and that's because the wind is still -- is so strong right now. we are getting a little bit of rain and about sideways because we have so much wind with this. but the dust has passed, although still lots of rain, guys. >> jason, thank you for breaking those -- breathing those elements like a lot of folks are out there right now, caught offguard with this. meteorologist iris hermosillo is breaking this down for us. >> so far the visibility is not terrible. we can still see state route 51 there , but keep in mind dust
11:41 am
11:44 am
right now and look at that, that does not look good right there. we have our abc15 live drive out at about, headed up the 51, which is apparently getting hit, but apparently just a lot of dust and rain in the valley and in some parts they are mourning folks just to stay off of the road, not to travel and just -- they are warning folks just to stay off of the road, not to travel and just be careful. >> is there a name for that? >> we have strong storms in that area, producing some very heavy rainfall so that is what we are looking at right now. i've got to tell you we've got flooding rain in the east valley, and also this other view right here from the abc15 studios, you can see the winds ticking up as the dust bolts through -- ticking up as the dust bowls through. visibility is not looking terrible from the shot and as soon as that main batch of jet -- dust roles of the visibility
11:45 am
service has actually allowed that dust storm morning to expire for the phoenix metro but as has been replaced -- it has been replaced with a blowing dust advisory so there are still could be visibility limitations, so keep that in mind but we are now just under a blowing dust advisory instead of the warning. and i mentioned the rain. i've got to show you the very heavy rain falling over apache junction right now, impacting the loop 202, red mountain freeway and also apache junction and parts of the us -- u.s. 60. you see all of the red, indicating the very heavy rain and the green polygons you are seeing pop up on the screen are flood advisories that have been issued. i would not be surprised if these -- were upgraded to some sort of thunderstorm warning as we continue to watch this heavy storm warning fall over some areas and i've been tracking rainfall areas. so far, a few spots in that area have actually picked up
11:46 am
we are talking within a 30 minute time span. so we are potentially looking at a flooding, if not a flash flooding threat in that apache junction area. if you are in apache junction and you tend to see flooding whenever we have heavy rain, be on alert: this is going to be an issue for you. and as a zoom for the route on abc15 desert doppler we are starting to see the rain filling in and we are looking at -- okay we are going back to abc15 desert doppler want to show you that the rain is now filling in with some heavy rain falling in spots like scottsdale and also falling in mesa and tempe. i took off the warnings you can actually see some of the roads a little bit better, right along the loop 101 near the b line highway. that's where some heavy rain is falling right now, so that is
11:47 am
looking at pockets of heavy rain night -- right near mason street -- main street in mesa and areas like broadway and also right along the 10 getting some heavy rain right near guadalupe -- in ahwatukee, rather. heavy rain is coming in and that will help settle the dust but now that will turn into a flooding threat, so still if you can avoid travel that is the best bet and stay alert as we've got chances for rain moving to the day today but especially tonight and tomorrow as we get a boost in that monsoon moisture. >> we have crews all over the valley and this is looking at the 202 and howard road right now also a lot of rain in that area and you can see the cars splashing through but i want to know if we can go back to one of our producers -- this is megan, one of our reporters in the life drive. -- in the live drive. what are you seeing now? >> hi, guys, we're in the 202
11:48 am
and we want to show you, i don't know if you saw but -- [ indiscernible - static ] i don't even think this video is doing this storm justice. it's just this gray brown really nasty out here to see -- to say the least. and we are now seeing that wall of dust and that rain and we are following this huge funnel cloud and asking iris, what is that t with right now. we are definitely taking it very slow on the roadways because of how the visibility is a little bit lower. you can see with the dust and rain coming down pretty hard on us right now and it has been on and off. we're just past country club coming up on fountain hills, downtown mesa area right now. we will send it back to you. >> one of our photographers -- he saw some trees out here. it looked like they were about to break.
11:49 am
those trees bending all the way over, it was pretty dramatic. we think bill for this shot. megan was headed actually toward where a lot of that rain is along the u.s. 60 and we now as i reset it was heading toward goldfield and the state park area as well. >> you can see in that radio and actually hear the rain pelting the camera right there. but this is another look at the adot, they are warning folks to just stay inside if you can. a lot of folks look like they are deciding to wait it out, just taking cover and not getting on the freeways because the traffic on the 60 looks pretty light for this time of day. >> let's take another look because we have crews across the valley. there it is, part of the remnants of the storm that came right through, hitting the valley hard. as the rain moves up through
11:52 am
all right, we are back with a weather alert here this morning i am meteorologist iris hermosillo, and we're tracking dust through the valley still and that heavy rain. the band of dust continues to move to the north had we've been watching this moving into different spots of the valley as it has gone to the north and northwest, and now we are seeing it from scottsdale. this is the mayo clinic valley can, -- valley camera. you can't even see the your next as this wall of storms moves in. this will continue to go up towards spots like deer valley. and of course behind it, that's where the rain is falling. and you can see this -- showing up on desert doppler so it is tracking straight up along the 51, up towards that northern pocket of the loop 101.
11:53 am
rain behind it. the good news is, the rain will help settle some of that dust but we are getting very heavy rainfall in spots like apache junction, so flooding is going to be a concern. i have seen some rain gauges picking up over a half-inch to nearly an inch of rain within just the last 30 minutes or so, so this area of concern -- is the area of concern as we have advisories posted and more scattered showers through parts of the valley in places like scottsdale and south-central phoenix, but through and producing pockets of heavy rainfall so we are not in the clear yet with that heavy rain moving to the valley. more rain chances are in the forecast as we go through tonight and also tomorrow. in fact, tomorrow is possibly a more active day so we have flash flood watches posted as we get some moisture, a boost in moisture from tropical depression javier. as we go through the next few hours we will keep tracking the
11:54 am
let's get to the crews in the field, jason valentine -- and danielle lerner are out there. what do you see and where are you, guys? >> reporter: we are at 48th street and guadalupe right between -- right south of phoenix. take a look, this is the i-10 headed down into ahwatukee and when we first got up here you could barely see that freeway be in the air and then the storm just went through here and knocked that dust down and now we even have a little bit of blue sky breaking through but still these big old raindrops, and if you want to flip around and show the american flag, look at the wind going here. that's what we have now, a few raindrops and all that wind coming through with this storm. that's probably why it moves through here so quickly.
11:55 am
>> when he was talking about the wind, we talked -- we saw that from the top of our helipad, and some of those trees looked like they were going to snap because of all of that wind. melissa blasius he is standing by in avondale, what are you seeing out there, melissa? okay -- well melissa we are working on getting that shot again, our crews across the valley but this is our adot camera right around thunderbird. justin, we were talking about the i-17 being the spot in question and the last storms we saw and again perhaps today, with tomorrow again they will be watching that >> very closely. >> i have done stories on i-17, specifically that area, that indian school area and they are trying to get those pumps replaced because some of those pumps are outdated in that area and i know in just the last few days we saw some pumps go down so they have been trying to get those back up and working. it's always a problem when you have this amount of water that
11:56 am
of those overheat and that's when we start to see the highways flooding. if we think back to a couple years ago when we saw those folks getting rescued from their cars, this was the helipad on top of the i--- the abc15 building and you can see that just whipping in the wind. >> yes we are just south of the loop 202 on 44th street in phoenix. this is are live drive, out and about. -- this is our live drive. >> reporte on the 60 right now east. we are seeing that rain coming down. the clouds have dissipated since we last checked in with you guys and the dust is not as brown. it's more of the darker clouds, the ominous clouds. and you can see a little bit -- peak of blue sky. -- pee -- peek of blue sky. we are getting a break here from the windshield right --
11:57 am
in just a few minutes because it's been on and off as we've been traveling from the station on the way down this way and we see those ominous clouds. looks like we're coming up on elm a school heading up the 60 -- alma school, hitting up on the 60. >> faye, you have video you are showing us, is that right? >> yes, we're getting an alert from apache junction police right now and they are telling us they are seeing extrem there in apache junction between phoenix and fourth avenues. i will pull this up to show you exactly where that is but obviously if you live in the area, that probably means a lot to you so you want to avoid the area. that's coming up again from apache junction police as this storm continues to move through and we look at these live pictures coming in.'s is really something. >> this is south phoenix -- this is really something.

jason was talking about all of the wind out there. you can hear the rain starting to hit the microphone, so obviously still just a downpour out there. >> and -- the precaution is if you haven't gotten hit, maybe will. it looks pretty clear as the dust moves through and then the violent wind and the rain with through the apache junction area. >> do we know where this is, guys? okay. waiting on the location there. what a shot that is waiting on the edge of the dust storm. this here. and sharing it at abc15.com. let's talk to meteorologist iris hermosillo. >> i've got to update you, we are now under a flash flood warning. remember we were talking about apache junction and faye just give you that update . we are under a flash flood warning for apache junction and that pocket of the valley right along the loop 202 ride along the loop -- that northeast loop of the loop 202 between the b line highway
11:59 am
that flash flood warning until 2:00. i told you we were seeing some very heavy rainfall amounts in that area and over the last hour we've seen anywhere from a half inch to even an inch of rain in that area, so this has become a very dangerous situation right in that apache junction area, right near the foothills there. as you can see the base of the superstition is where we are still seeing the very rainfall. keep in mind it's a little difficult to see because we are right near the rainfall, but this is where we have the potential of flash flooding. that means rising water very quickly and enough water to cause -- to lead rather to a very dangerous situation. so if you are in that area and it's important that maybe you go to higher ground. if you are in a spot that tends to see flooding quickly just off the base of that higher terrain, your best bet is to go to a safe area, or to stay off
12:00 pm
turn around, don't drown. you do not want to drive through any flooded washes or roadways that have water on them , as you can't tell how deep they are just by looking at them. but know that we are seeing some very heavy rain again in that area, still. and the flash flooding situation is getting worse, so we are under flash flood warnings until 2:00 in the afternoon for that area and we're still tracking that dust through the north valley and even heavier rain out to our west pretty quiet but we are starting to see a new cell develop right over the i-10 in goodyear. -- so a lot to keep out an eye out for -- so a lot to keep an eye out for and i will continue to update you in just a bit. >> thank you, iris. i think we have more of your video to show you right now and if you have any, send it to us. look at this big wall of dust right here. this is from dusty -- this is
