we were hoping it wasn't true, but breaking tonight, a 3- year-old girl rushed to the hospital after getting hit by a car. >> and not just any car, but a police cruiser near 75th and camelback. >> >. navideh forghani was first on the scene, and the little girl was tragically just trying to get some ice cream.

especially with the hot temperatures, they hear testimony music, rush -- the music, rush out, and don't lock both directions -- look both directions, and you can see the truck just behind me. we found out in the last 10 minutes that the 3-year-old little girl just finished getting her ice cream, then ran in front of the ice cream truck and then the patrol car. she was initially hit by the patrol car, then actually ran her over. that female officer jumped out of the car trying to help her as soon as she could, trying to comfort her. i'm told she was actually in the area responding to an animal call and she just finished that call, and so she was just leaving the neighborhood when it happened. we actually talked to the neighbor who called police out to the scene for that animal call, and he says he just can't help but blame himself.

her. said a prayer right away. i don't even know who it is. but i'm praying. after this happened, you know, it happened, maybe she's going to be okay, but she ran to the ice cream truck, it was an accident, you know. it wasn't her fault. >> reporter: this kid is definitely fighting for her life right now. she's breathing but is in extremely critical condition right now. she will be in surgery for the next few won't have any updates until abc 15 morning, but so many people are praying for her and the officer as well. it's a 35-year-old female officer with phoenix police department, an eight-year veteran, absolutely devastated about the accident. she has crisis response support helping her through this as well. officers are going to be talking to her to find out exactly how it unfolded, but
