we begin with breaking news here on abc15 warnings. it was a violent night in phoenix with a confrontation between a man and police turning deadly. christopher sign, what is the latest? >> was injured. shots were fired. a man is dead, an officer was rushed to the hospital and all of this unfolded just off the 50 went -- the 51, near 20th and thomas. it's a story we broke on abc15.com. abc15's katie connor is on the scene with the newest information. katie ? >> reporter: we want everyone to know that the officer injured is expected to be okay.

>>police were investigating a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot. there was one officer looking into it when the suspect approached. there was a fight and and -- the officer requested help. shortly after that, the shooting took place. is being treated for injuries and is expected to be okay. so tell me ex had injuries to his face, did the suspect have a knife? >> i don't have that information. there is a physical suspect -- physical altercation between the two. he is suspected to have received minor injuries to the face, so there was a struggle. just before that, there was an officer here looking into a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the park. there was a physical struggle,

the suspect during which the officer received minor injuries to the face. the officer was able to get on the radio for help. the second officer then encountered the suspect as well. there was a shooting, the officer shot the suspect. the suspect moved a brief distance away and then fell to the floor and that's where the suspect was pronounced deceased. >> reporter: the man was shot before he started running. >> correct. the shooting suspect took a short distance where he felt of thgr katie, we will get back to you in just a second. we've got to get over to alice -- iris for the developing weather situation. >> yes the rain woke up some of us here. hopefully it didn't wake you up. we are sitting at 84 degrees currently but let's jump into

we can see what this looks like. let's zoom in and see what's happening right here in the phoenix metro area. you can see overnight we had a good amount of lightning strikes and some pockets of heavier rainfall. mallory and i were chatting earlier and she said it was down pouring where she was and then all of a sudden nothing. things can break up very quickly. this is near fountain hills along mason and scottsdale. just off the 101 you can see we will be tracking this throughout the morning but you did see some of lightning strikes as well. justin pazera is where there right now and that lightning is mesmerizing but also very dangerous. >> reporter: yes, really allison just on my way into work i saw several lightning strikes. they were actually on i-10. just a few blocks from here we saw them on the street. hopefully you won't have to deal with anything like this

check this out, several palm trees went up in flames in glendale and you can see just how close they are to the homes. thankfully the homes were not damaged but it was a close call for those folks and then just look at the aftermath. charred palm trees. it was a scary morning for folks in this neighborhood. >> the lightning actually -- it hit the tree. and woke all of us up and then we came inside and some of fire. -- >> reporter: weren't the only ones seeing a lot of lightning. we also got word from issues in west phoenix so the area getting hit hard this morning. justin pazera abc15. two crime alerts coming out of mesa and officers really need your help tracking these cases. the first is a search for a dodge ram and the driver

13 the suspect pulled into a parking lot near greenfield road, hitched up a trailer and then took off. two yamaha dirt bikes were on the trailer at the time. and mesa police said this man went on quite the beer run. his love for bud light -- may be his undoing. he stole this from a university drive gas station. when confronted punch and took off when the driver in a white chevy cavalier. where's jesse wilson? we are finding out more information about the 10-year- old's mother. ya -- asked the maricopa county attorney about his mother. there are reports she was once a foster mother in california and had taking children away from her. -- had children taken

maricopa county says there's not a good way to track issues from other states. >> we don't have a thorough national system for sharing information. whether there is anything that came up when she initially had contact with dcis locally that would've raised the suspicions resulting in checking other states -- i don't know. >> the county attorney pointed out that no charges have been filed and at last check they said the mother is cooperating. the maricopa county attorney's office is one of the best there is according to an international group that credits law force agencies. they earned a gold standard assessment. it is something montgomery says they are very proud of. abc15 live desk. >> these images are something else coming out of new jersey. i was showing this on facebook live a few minutes ago in what

my goodness. obviously there are injuries in this one and they said this collision occurred at high speed. one person has died and nine others were injured. one of the buses there is almost broken in half. scary stuff. to the death investigation in chandler as police look for a couple -- a killer after an 84-year-old man was found stop -- stabbed to death near dobson and warner. if you know anything about what went on there, please police. accused of misusing public funds and having inaccurate public documents. the board of regents will hold a special board meeting today to talk about these and other issues. they will also be getting legal advice and that portion of the meeting starts at 3:00 but it is not open to the public. they have university schools in tucson and phoenix. the irs wants to make sure they don't become the victim of

apparently telling persons and students -- telling students they hope owe back taxes. they will demand payment over the phone or threatened to arrest them. we had people putting themselves between the flames and people just to get them out of harms way. >> they are making more progress on the blue cut fire burning in this area with the san bernardino -- in the san bernardino area. more than 1500 crews are battling the 36,000 acre fire. containment has now risen to 22%. a damage assessment team has been ordered to look at the destruction but the fire has just been too dangerous for crews to get in. the north and southbound lanes are now open in the area.

the fires in california to the historic devastating floods in louisiana. helping our state is on the way . by day's end there will be volunteers taking action in both of those states issues -- assisting with shelter, food and the emotional support they need so much. they will get a visit from the republican presidential candidate today as his running mate mike pence will be in baton rouge. >> i hope everybody in louisiana knows that our country is praying for them and standing with them to help them in these difficult hours. >> there were 13 deaths so far. 80,000 people have applied for federal disaster assistance. the number of damaged homes, a staggering 40,000. they are calling this the worst disaster since super storm sandy.

us got a few raindrops this morning. you definitely did need the windshield wipers at some point. but it's not very widespread and it is dying down. it looks like it's going to be mostly dry. let's take a look at where we are at right now. 83 degrees and keeping chances low throughout the day. a little bit later on though, 103 so it will get ready to stay. here's a look -- it will get pr outside. we saw some of the heavier rain coming therefrom the west. you see it there with the lighter shades of green and the yellows and tiny dots of red. that's definitely breaking up now and we are just seeing some light rainfall near the fountain hills area but most of the valley is clear right now so we will keep our eyes open. we are keeping rain chances for the next couple of days and then as we start the work week

so we can't let our guard down . yet. it's 97 degrees by lunchtime. you may want to eat indoors. coming up we will tell you a little bit more about when the chances are that we could see more spotty showers. even though we are seeing more wet and damp roads in the valley, no spots on the freeway now from the east valley. i-17 southbound starting at loop 101 until you hit i-10 but i do want to give you a look at one of these spots. this is loop 202 rainier gilbert road. you can see the shine out on the roadway and traffic is light but take it easy when you do see those slick spots. liar liar speed goes on fire.

a woman in santa cruz county is suffering from a number of symptoms after contracting zika virus, bringing the number of travel related cases to 24 in our state. we know she was bitten somewhere else and then returned home to arizona. it has not spread to mosquitoes in our state but they are stepping up surveillance and monitoring the insects as a precaution. zika virus has at least one family taking -- changing for a cruise. >> mom got pregnant and the doctor didn't want her to brisk getting the virus. but so far no -- no luck in getting the full refund. they were all set on -- going. she said going on the cruise isn't worth the risk. >> i don't want to put my unborn child in any undue danger . >> so carnival did not return an after-hours email. the family was set to cruise next month.

if you are in this area, you will see some raindrops but definitely not everybody is getting in on that this morning. take a look, we top out at 103 today. it will be a muggy day. if you're going to be outside, then noticed that the uv index will be in the very high category. the air quality is not terrible, in the moderate category. so try to limit your time outdoors if you are extremely sensitive. no other weather alerts but we are keeping a 20% chance of showers throughout the day and this is why: look with the here -- with me at futurecast. we start to see showers in this model popping up across the state, so that is why we are

i want to get right to the breaking news only on abc15.com. in phoenix a police officer was rest should -- was rushed to the hospital after getting into a fight with a suspect who is now dead. all of this happened right near 20th street and thomas, east of the 51. katie conner has been on the scene for us this morning. i know you were putting some information on facebook. what do you have now? >> reporter: chris, we learned the officer spotted a morning on the opposite side of this crime tape. he approached the car and the suspect came out of nowhere and attacked him. this all happened around 2:30 a.m. the officer managed to radio for help and fortunately there was an officer nearby. when officers showed up, he shot the suspect and then turned around -- who then turned around to run away. >> the officer here initially received minor injuries to his face and is being treated at
