i want to get right to the breaking news only on abc15.com. in phoenix a police officer was rest should -- was rushed to the hospital after getting into a fight with a suspect who is now dead. all of this happened right near 20th street and thomas, east of the 51. katie conner has been on the scene for us this morning. i know you were putting some information on facebook. what do you have now? >> reporter: chris, we learned the officer spotted a morning on the opposite side of this crime tape. he approached the car and the suspect came out of nowhere and attacked him. this all happened around 2:30 a.m. the officer managed to radio for help and fortunately there was an officer nearby. when officers showed up, he shot the suspect and then turned around -- who then turned around to run away. >> the officer here initially received minor injuries to his face and is being treated at

the suspect has been pronounced deceased. >> reporter: that suspect tried to turn around and that's when the officer fired at him. i am told right now please don't know if the suspect was armed, but we do know the officer who fired at the suspect had about 20 years with phoenix police. as for the injured officer, he's expected to be okay. >> thank you, also happening right now, we have a traffic crash an situation happening really in the northwest part of the valley. i want to get right to justin pazera. i'm being told you are at the intersection of bell and grand. is that accurate, and what's happening? >> reporter: hey. we are at bethany home and grand, chris. there's actually a lot going on right now. let me show you by -- we start by showing you the crash. from bethany and grand avenue.

around this way you can see the police perimeter and a very large police perimeter set up. you can see them going through and looking under cars for the flashlights. not a lot of information from police but some people involved in this crash -- ran from the scene. we don't know the extent of the injuries. we do now it's between a motorcycle and vehicle so somebody in that group ran right now there's a very active search going on right now. we were told to come here and wait for police. >> mallory, what is happening traffic wise? >>it's shut down from bethany home to maryland, so basically 51st to 55th avenue you'll see that closure. so hop up and use glendale avenue. and then you can get back on it

you can get back on and 59th avenue so head out early if that's part of your route. that's just to show the really big presence out there. as far as freeways go, no problem spots -- you are waking up to this weather again. the rain in the valley -- getting a little bit of everything overnight. >> yes spar rain, lightning and wind overnight. look at the lightning strikes out in the valley. just unbelievable. there wasn't really a lot of rain. just of pretty good show from mother nature. -- what's on tap for the rest of the day, mallory?

shows not a lot of rain. we did see some of that overnight. i know it woke up me -- woke me up and maybe some of you as well. but this is all breaking up right now so what we are seeing this morning is very isolated pockets, just areas where you could see rain on the windshield. you may see some slick roads out there from earlier. we had a little bit of spotty showers out there in the west valley, 60 near the 303 that's already broken up so coming up i will track futurecast with you guys and we can see when the better chances are that we will see more chances for rain. police are confirming to us there was a deadly shooting at a bar between two rival biker gangs. authorities say this one was a shootout between the hells angels and the mongols. they are known to have a notorious rivalry. one man was killed, another was hurt, three were arrested and now tempe pd is warning other arizona departments to be on guard.

who died -- zach brame who died in his sleep. meanwhile you may see these shirts out tonight. chandler visits red mountain high. the guy in the middle is his former coach. they are special tribute bearing his old high school number. was it planned, or is this early-retirement? he just left his job at the mesa -- lieutenant after his arrest for dui back in february. results show his blood-alcohol level was .306, approaching four times the legal limit. two people were behind bars after they kicked in the doors and hold off dozens of marijuana plants from these three w. valley houses. we've mapped this all out for you to give you an idea of where this all happened. inside the homes deputies found 107 pot plants and 10 pounds of finished marijuana. a man

in to look around a little bit. he said the house was broken into a few times. he openly admits it was a grow house but claims the owners were renting a legal medical marijuana business. >> their clients would come, order what they needed and they would deliver it to them. >> reporter: so they delivered. they didn't have people come to the house? >> no. >> deputies say operation like this could make $1 million a year. the coast guard unloaded 11 tons of cocaine. it was seized off the central and south american coasts. it's from 15 different drug busts that happen in june and july. they've seized a total of 81 tons of cocaine and arrested 329 smugglers since that -- since last fall. today marked two years since an american journalist was killed by isis.

james foley. he taught right here in the valley from 1996 to 1999. of course danielle, he had a great connection with you. >> i went to graduate school with him and i always admired his passion for teaching so i went and spent time with the foley scholars this week. there were only two last year and now there are six. five of them shown here, all of them getting financial help and foley alliance to help them succeed in high school and beyond. >> we hope to be that same foley for these kids that yes we know they are in the same environment on the scene community but that it doesn't have to stay that way. >> we will hear more from the foley scholars in our later newscast but she founded it with her husband eddie. she had him as a teacher, coach, mentor and friend.

right now scanning the skies and it's just very scattered activity for the most part. the valley is pretty quiet right now. seeing some of those showers just break out and headed east. they start in the west end really dropped a couple rain drops and then left. this is a live look outside right now, very faint but i can see some of the clouds. it's 84 degrees, the humidity is up. here's the temperature break down for friday. by 10 am, 92 degrees. we will have a little bit of a low late morning right around lunch time. it's still muggy so for lunch time plans, keep it indoors. it will feel sticky out there but if you like it, go ahead and sit outside. as we get into the later afternoon timeframe we will start to see after the daytime heating, more chances for rain.

a health scare is prompting changes at queen creek splash pad. this comes after it was closed for the eighth time because of a bathroom accident happening in the water. the splash pad will shut off for five minutes every 90 minutes to give families potty breaks and do any necessary cleaning. the five-minute shut off time begins next week. congratulations, you made it. the weekend is finally in sight. >> there are a lot of things to
