. this is abc15 news, taking action. >> good morning, everybody. it is now 5:00 on a saturday. i'm allison rodriguez. >> and i'm nick ciletti. just ahead on abc15 mornings, a busy night for firefighters called out to at least four fires. we're taking you to the scene as investigators figure out what started all of these. and a phoenix man is stabbed in phoenix police responding. we're going to have that story coming up. and you came out to vote for the arizona primary elections and we are learning the results on two big races that we have to talk about coming up in just a few minutes. >> one of those nine votes apart. couldn't be any closer than that. let's talk about the most accurate forecast. a lot of people want to know what labor day is going to be like. >> it is a jam packed weekend.

and radar. that's going to clear up as we continue on through the morning. this is a live look outside one of our valley cameras here, and you can see the temps not bad at all. in the 70s in chandler. low 80s in mesa and deer valley as well. mid-80s in glendale. this is kind of the tradeoff for us here. it's hot during day, and overnight lows are starting to cool a little bit here. today we'll top degrees. tomorrow 101. it's looking great, and spoiler alert, your labor day forecast is looking great as well. that will be in a couple minutes. >> we'll get to the local breaking news in just a minute. first, an officer critically wounded after a shooting in atlantic city. according to authorities one suspect was killed during the shootout with police. one officer is in surgery. this happened at the parking garage. we know there's a search for at

that area has been blocked off, and as soon as we get more details and updates, we'll pass them along to you. >> more breaking news happening in the valley. police are investigating a stabbing here. it happened at 16th street and roosevelt. that's where we find maryellen resendez. what are you finding out about any of the victims. >> the victim was rushed to the local hospital which happens to be across the street here, with at least three different stab we're told he was stabbed in both arms and once in the neck. he was parked where this officer is in a pickup truck. according to him and the witness, they were sleeping in the truck when the suspect just came up and started attacking him. you see that is where the truck is. he was able to back up to try and get away from the suspect, so that's where his truck ended up. now, according to police, they do have a description of a suspect, and they are searching for him right now.

witnesses, one that was outside the truck, and one that was inside the truck that that suspect just came up and started attacking that man while he was actually sleeping inside his truck attacking him through that window, and then he has two sort of stab wound cuts to the arm, and again one to the neck. we're told all of them are nonlife threatening and he should be okay. we're back here live. now we're also hearing of a shooting at another we're going to be heading that way, nick. we'll bring you more on this scene and that scene in just a bit. maryellen resendez abc15 news. >> we appreciate your work out there. several fires breaking overnight. let's get straight to them. this one happening here at an apartment complex near i-17 and greenway. at least two units damaged by the flames. the good news is it does appear everybody made it out safely. it's unclear if anybody had to

let's get to this one, an apartment complex at 43rd 43rd avenue and thunder bird. several firefighters came out to battle this blaze here, and you can see the flashing lights. we are, work to go figure out how this happened or what was the incident that caused that but we'll let you know as soon as we find out more from them. let's get to this house fire here sparked near 7th avenue and southern. we're told this was a vacant house here. nobody was inside at the time. firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading. damaged. no word on what sparked this one yet. >> a fourth fire sparking early this morning. this is south of downtown near 7 7th avenue and grand. a huge response at this point. dozens of firefighters battling the flames. we're told people living there made it out safely. as soon as we get more detail, we'll let you know, and we're getting word of a 5th fire. this one happening, north phoenix area, cave creek and

information, we'll pass it along to you. >> democracy, 2015, big news coming out of the maricopa recorders office. we just checked and official says all of the ballots have been counted. here are unofficial results and look at the race for congressional district five could not be tighter. bigg is leaving christine jones by 9 votes. she was ahead by primary day, but we have seen the lead shrink in recent days. and the co herself, helen percel, ahead of aaron flannery by 185 votes. she came under fire for the long lines at the presidential preferential election. police are investigating a murder of a guy is gunned down in the sunny slope area. we are waiting to hear back but we are told shots were fired

died. we saw the search going on with our own cameras. the shooters have not been caught. if you know anything, let police know. a valley family, they're demanding answers after their father's accused killer walks out of jail, even after admitting to the crime. police are saying kathy sackrider was speeding and plowed into a car stopped at a red light, pushing that car into a wall. she admitted she was drunk and high, and hours injail, and then the judge released her with no bail. angel alga sal -- salgago died in the trash. >> i'm thinking are they not worthy of a bond. is it that our family members are not important just because he felt sorry for this girl, that's just irresponsible. >> sackrider has more than 20

including car jacking, armed robbery and prostitution. the report sent to the judge said she was a flight risk. she's supposed to be back in court september 15th. a man hunt underway for five people after a teenager is jumped, stabbed and left for dead, all over a bicycle. this all unfolding in a neighborhood between chandler and ray. this morning, police revealing they're looking for a blue and brown sedan. we are working to get an update on the condition of that 16- year-o. strike again. investigators in chandler responding to the 6th 6th suspicious fire in a month near mcclintock and chandler boulevard. this is the latest fire after a trailer, car, backyard fence and a house all went up in flames recently. at this point, police can't tell us if all of these fires are connected. they are looking for a pattern. one woman we spoke with has two young kids and she says she's terrified. she says if there's one person

she is hoping that they stop. >> i think i would say just think about who you're impacting. these are my kids. they're my life. and the fact that you have no consideration for, you know, people's property and human life. >> sadly we talked to that woman's husband yesterday who feared this exact scenario. the good news, nobody was hurt, and the people here tell us they have each other's backs, and neighbors jumped him with the flames. >> a lot of angry boos at a friday night school board meeting in the valley. the higley unified board accepted the resignation of a beloved principal, dr. terri wattawa was principal of williams field high in gilbert. the reasons for her resignation are still a secret right now. but people at the meeting

her resignation. >> she knows our names. she goes to all our clubs, club meetings, she goes to events. i don't know, i don't think there's another person out there for the job. >> we did leave a message for the principal, but we have yet to hear back from her. this isn't the first time students have come to wattawa's defense. she came under fire after allowing a senior prank to forward. students went before a school meeting, saying she could keep her job. in that case, she was put on leave for two days. you're supposed to be a pillar in our community, but a valley man accused of embezzling thousands from a group for veterans. kirk davis accused of taking $157,000 from the pat tillman memorial vfw post. police say he started stealing in 2014, writing himself a

about 2600 feet, and the distance from schools, homes, churches and parks tripled to 1500 feet. it is trending online, and i'm sure you're heard about it by now, taco trucks on every corner, a comment by the latinos for trump founder about taco trucks and it's leaving a bad taste in some people's mouths. there's a sign here that says taco trumps on every corner, a donald trump supporter who went on tv and said that's what will happen if immigration changes aren't made. >> from a political standpoint, that's a bad slander to me, a slap in the face in a joking way. the sign says it all. >> democrats say the reaction has been positive. a few people did see the sign and they registered to vote. they are even planning to bring a taco truck to the location today to draw even more attention. they were targeting mosquitoes, but accidentally killed millions of honey bees.

are apologizing. honey bees are the world's most important pollinators of food crops, but are dying, mostly due to extensive use of herbicides and pesticides. it's going to take delta a while to bounce back. new information on just how much that computer outage is going to cost them. with 2300 canceled flights in three days, they are looking at $100 million lost in revenue. delta isn't the only one either. southwest airlines losing $54 million from a july resulted in thousands of canceled flights. and taking a trip to santa fe is about to get a whole lot easier just in time for the holidays, too. american airlines are launching a new service running once a day in each direction between santa fe and sky harbor. flights are not scheduled until december. lax projects a record number of people traveling on labor day. they expect more than 800,000

multiple delays are expected for those traveling to the east coast, too. today, officers are going to be beefing up patrols there to help direct the bumper to bumper traffic, too, and from the airport, nick. >> they're trying every trick in the book. distracted driving seems to be getting worse, and at times, police may feel like they're in a losing battle. last year alone, about 3500 people were killed in the u.s. and puerto rico. that's up by almost 3000 deaths and those numbers may actually be worse. here's the challenge, there is drivers were on the phone when police show up to crash scenes. every parent wants to be sure their child makes it safely to and from school. one spot in the east valley is taking it a step further. traffic expert mallory moore shows us how. >> drivers in queen creek are going to see a whole lot more of these cruising around because mcso district 6 is boosting their patrols for the next month. sheriff's deputies are hoping when drivers see the cruisers,

low 80s. not bad at all. a little bit warmer out to the northwest valley, peoria, pride coming in at 8 -- surprise coming in at 88 degrees. anthem, wickenburg, both in the low 80s for us this morning. let's get right to it. i want to show you a break down of your saturday here. by 10:00 a.m., we're going to be in the low 90s. flirting with the triple digits by 1:00, and things are going to stay pretty warm for us throughout the rest of the day today. we're still in the low 90s by 9:00 p.m. your nights are not too cool. they are still going to stay on the mild and warm side. for today, we're going to top out at 103 degrees today here in phoenix. your uv index is going to be at a 10. a very high category. air quality is moderate today. we have ozone concerns. that's what is bumping up to moderate. and weather alerts, none there, and storm chances, that's good news if you have plans to be outdoors. here's a look at future cast here. as we track the rest of your holiday weekend, i'm going to go ahead and press play.

to the north of us for stray spotty showers, stray storms there. for the valley, i think we're going to stay dry from this. we don't have rain chances on the board. all of that is going to push north, and as we get into overnight, and tomorrow, things clear out. by tomorrow morning, we are good, too, and especially by labor day morning, we are expecting clearer and dry conditions statewide for us there. perfect, maybe to hit the boat, go out somewhere. if you are going to be traveling on your look at this here. our friends to the east, new mexico, 87 degrees there. down to the south, el paso coming at 92 with chances of storms. dune to tucson -- down to tucson, 99. to the west coast, la, and san diego, beautiful conditions in the 70s there if you want something a little bit cooler than what we're going to get to in the valley this weekend. it's not bad pool weather for us. i would be ready to leave just yet.

abc15 breaking news. >> let's get to some breaking news happening right now. phoenix police, they are on scene of a shooting. >> this is all happening near 35 35th avenue and southern. abc15's maryellen resendez just arriving on scene. maryellen, what are you finding out. >> so far, what we have been told by police is we know that at least one now, let me step aside here, this is just off shumway farms road. we're off 35th avenue and lower buckeye. you can see there's a large police presence here. we do know that the paramedics were told to step it up and try and get here. we know that person was seriously injured from that. now, right now, we are trying to confirm exactly what happened, exactly what was going on that led to this shooting. we do know that when our trucks

this was before the police line was put up, it appeared that some cars had been broken into. we don't know if that's related yet. again, we're trying to confirm with police. they are also just arriving to the scene here along with us. and so they're trying to also sort out exactly what was going on here. again, we do know at least one person was shot. we do have that from police. we do know that paramedics were told to step it up as far as getting here and person to medical aid. and that right now, is all we have confirmed. we are still trying to figure out the rest, and as well as police, because like i said, they just showed up here. so allison, and nick, we hope to have more information for you in about 30 minutes when we hit again at 6:00. we should have hopefully some more confirmation from phoenix police. back to you. >> maryellen resendez, thank you, keep working your sources so we can find out more information.

onto you guys. >> it's 5:30 on a saturday. i'm nick ciletti. >> and i'm allison rodriguez. we are keeping track of your most accurate forecast. it's a busy weekend, a holiday weekend. i know some people will get out there and enjoy themselves. let me tell you what you can expect and what's happening right now. here's a look at abc15 desert doppler. you can see things are quiet, not only for us here in the valley, but also up north. they're our friends in flagstaff, not getting much either, now, here's a look at this. our current temperature, 85 degrees. mild mornings. a little bit later on, skies clearing out. sunny skies, 103 degrees. it will be on the warmer side. that is average for this time of year. i want to give you a quick snapshot ahead of us here. for labor day, your traveling forecast here. we are expecting dryer conditions over the next couple of days in flagstaff, and vegas. no matter where you plan to go, if you're going to leave the beautiful valley, things are not looking bad.

good here. i did promise you that u of a game day forecast. that will be in a few minutes. we have more news to get to this morning. the feds are dealing up for a kratom crack down. if you don't know this drug, you should. you can buy it in stores right now. the dea is cracking down it. those shelves are going to have to be cleared out. the dea is moving kratom to the same danger level as heroin. can you after a 1000% increase in emergency room calls and 15 deaths in the past two years linked directly to this drug. >> for us it's a concern because we see the upward trend so we want to get ahead of it before those 15 deaths become 1500 deaths. >> many supporters fighting back on this one. they plan to hold a march on capitol hill to protest the de a's decision. well, this man thought he had a full proof fan that

police say he broke into a mesa business. marty anderson left his car at the crime scene, and decided to report it as stolen. police say that's one thing he didn't factor in. his dna was all over the business, and stolen items were also found in his car. he's changing his plea this morning. daniel boyd divit plead not guilty, the mesa man inappropriately touched a young girl, and saved multiple photos and videos of her. he's scheduled to be sentence next month. problem is the court filing on the settlement doesn't specify a number. we only know that the lawyers pressing for a criminal case wanted nearly $6 million. so whatever the agreement, county officials still have to put it in for a vote. well, it's a face you're about to see more often. u.s. marshalls say they are ready to end this guy's 16 year

i want to show you anthony seth burros, the typical priority on the most wanted list with a $25,000 reward to catch him. he's accused of gunning down juan reuben rodriguez at a house party in tucson. he led investigators on a trail halfway around the world, even to the philippines where they lost track of him. he will be featured this weekend on the hunt with john walsh. that is tomorrow night, and we're going to have the very latest from that one on abc15 she's a certified pilot, scuba diver, and has a black belt in taekwondo. an arizona woman's ability to live without arms, won't let her on a roller coaster. she's suing universal studios after the park refused to let them get on rides. the park gave her a special disability riders guide,

grasp with one upper extremity. >> it reminded me of a time when i was in elementary school, and i was prevented from going on certain equipment on the playground. and that feeling that infuriated me, i hadn't experienced it for years. >> universal studios has not officially commented on this story yet. the trial over a north carolina law governing transgender bathrooms has been pushed back to may. the original trial date was set for november. there's no word on why the trial was delayed. the hb2 law requires transgender people to use public restrooms that match their birth certificate, not their gender identity. in a major twist in the colin kaepernick controversy, the santa clara police union sending a letter saying they may stop working events unless changes are made with the quarterback. he has come under fire this week for refusing to stand for the national anthem, and

officers on them. sheriff joe arpaio rounding up veterans, and says he respects the right to protest but strikes a chord with him when the quarterback has been sitting out. >> what can i say, he makes his own decisions. what triggered me was his comments and actions, but i have been playing the national anthem for at least 12 years. >> arpaio himself is an army played daily inside his jails. friends of democracy 2016 now, and the arizona republican party defending its decision to create a controversial wanted poster of anne kirkpatrick. we showed you this poster complete with what many believe are bullet holes, as several high profile democrats called it disturbing. the arizona gop is firing back calling the criticism an

message that kirkpatrick avoids public appearances in which she might be asked tough questions. the democratic hopeful experiencing more fall out from her e-mails. the 58 page heavily redacted document highlights clinton had over a dozen mobile devices and two top clinton aides admitted the whereabouts of those devices would become unknown once she transferred to a new device. >> i think this is a real but combined with the fact that she has disappeared basically off the campaign trail. she hasn't held a press conference in nine months. >> the clinton campaign praising the release saying it justifies the justice department's decision for no criminal charges. trump responding saying clinton's reckless conduct shows she cannot be trusted with the presidency. president obama in china for the g20 summit. world leaders are there to talk

obama and china's president are expected to announce they will take part in the paris agreement to cut carbon emission. today's trip is mr. obama's last visit to asia as president. threats made against the new sandy hook elementary school, officers in newtown, connecticut, arresting a 28- year-old man for calling into the new school and making some kind of a threat for the first day of classes. police are investigating if this manmade threats against the other school. the school opened after the old building was demolished, following the 2012 shooting that killed 26 people including 20 students. the water a no go in flint, michigan, this morning. we are just finding out that the environmental officials that were there will have to test the water supply for another three months. the city switched to the flint river to save money. it ended up causing lead to go into the new water supply, an ongoing saga, of course, and

the fda banning 19 chemicals used to make antibacterial soap. they pose major health risks. manufacturers have a year to get rid of the ingredients found in an estimated 40% of products on store shelves right now. that ban does not affect antibacterial products used in hospitals or consumer hand sanitizers which are mostly alcohol based. it's a development project that could of downtown phoenix forever, and this morning we are learning the city is set to weigh in on the $18 million incentive package to make happen. set to vote wednesday on a multimillion dollar plan to bring apartments, restaurants and the food store, according to the phoenix business journal, under the new plan, the city would pay as much as $18.3 million in tax rebates. a consumer alert on the job front for you this morning.

cutting 7000 jobs. the cuts are being made as wal- mart introduces a new modernized system for store book keeping and inventory tracking. no word on which locations will be affected. we're told all the job cuts will happen over the next few months. don't freak out when you hear about this one. it's four months until christmas. i can't believe it. and wal-mart, they are starting their lay away program today. the store is also the first this year to come out with its list of the toys it says will be on your kids or grand kids wish list. wal-mart got recommendations for kids from the 25 hottest toys. star wars themed toys, and an electronic r2d2 on the list. other top toys include the dock mcstuns hospital care cart and a teenage mutant ninja turtles play set. they expect spending to increase over the rest of the year. sales are expected to grow

started. >> that's when i contacted the city of phoenix. >> city inspectors agreed the project did not have the permits for a structural remodel before the work, and issued a notice of violation. that led nowhere, since a permit was pulled later. the beam was replaced but that didn't fix greg's floor. a spokesperson tells me they would have no role in ascertaining or verifying if any damage occurred as a result of new construction. so greg filed a complaint with the registrar of contractors. >> they seemed to want to attribute this to settling of a building. >> in a statement, the roc says the investigator was not able to determine whether the settling was due to the work performed by the contractor or due to the previous issues the residents experienced with settling. agency says by the time it inspected the job, more three months after its completion, the permits were in place. no violations, no fines, no help. >> i was flabbergasted. >> greg says he's filing a complaint with his insurer. i'm investigator joe ducey.

a shooting at 36th avenue and southern. abc15's maryellen resendez is on the scene. mare ellen, you have been out there for about a half hour, what are you finding out from police. >> reporter: well, police are confirming that at least one person was shot. they just told us that it was actually a homeowner. let me step aside so you can see the scene out here. of course everything is still kind of revolving out here. according to phoenix police, the homeowner was leaving for work when for some reason he was confronted by two they got into some type of altercation. he was shot in the chest. we are told he is in extreme critical condition. he was rushed to a local hospital. now phoenix police still not sure exactly what that altercation was over. one of the things that they are investigating is that there were several or there were a few open doors, two cars in the area. it's still too early to say whether or not those vehicles were being broken into or not. all they know is it's very suspicious to come into a

nobody was inside at the time, that's good news, firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading. we're told that kitchen area was damaged but there's no word on what sparked it. and a fourth fire sparking early this morning. this home going up in flames south of downtown near 7th 7th avenue and grant. a huge response at this one. dozens of firefighters battling the flames. we're told people living here all made it out safely thankfully. as soon as we get an update on what exactly happened, count on us to pass it along to you. >> find a killer after a man was gunned down in the sunny slope area near 2nd street and alice. you may be familiar. the bullets began to fly after some sort of fight. if you know anything, police are urging you to give them a call. chandler where a man hunt is underway for at least five people after a teenager is jumped and stabbed and left for dead all over a bicycle. this unfolding in a neighborhood between chandler and ray. police believe that they are

say is suspicious is they are a few cars out here that actually had their doors open. now, they have not said whether those cars were being broken into or not because they're still investigating on whether exactly what was happening with those cars, and again, the only witness to this right now is that man who is in critical condition, and in the hospital. that homeowner that was leaving for work. we know there was a 911 call, from someone inside the who called police once they heard that gunshot. we are out here live, we're going to stay out here live and get updated information. as soon as we know more we'll get that to you. live in south phoenix, maryellen resendez, abc15 news. maryellen, thank you very much. breaking overnight, one man is in the hospital after being stabbed multiple times. this happened at a circle k near 16th street and roosevelt. witnesses say the victim was asleep in the vehicle when the suspect approached him and started attacking him. one of those stab wounds was to the neck.

but police have not said yet what led to the attack. the suspect being described now as a hispanic man in his 20s with light colored clothing. the feds are gearing up for a kratom crack down. don't know the drug, well, you should. you can actually buy it in stores right now. abc15's kim tobin has more on the debate, and on the dangers with this drug. >> reporter: it comes in pill, powder, and liquid, and in one month, the dea is ordering kratom off all putting it on the same level as heroin. >> high potential for abuse. >> reporter: supporters say the herbal medicine relieves pain, and claim it can be a cure for opiate addiction. the fda doesn't have enough studies to prove it. and the dea says emergency room visits increased 1000% over the last ten years, and in the last two years, 15 deaths have been tied to the drug. >> for us it's a concern.
