thank goodness that mother nature cooperated. i think the weather was pretty nice for us. let's get into what you can expect today. we've got abc 15 doppler here, we're scanning the skies. this morning you're waking up with clear skies, 78 degrees right now at phoenix sky harbor. so milder temperatures, these morning lows not bed at all. later on we're going to be warmer, start to dry out a little bit as well. here's a look at your labor day travel. take a look at what you ca expect. we are expecting warmer temperatures in las vegas, upper 90s there. 70s out to the west of us. really nice conditions there. and then over to our east, albuquerque, el paso expecting pretty nice temperatures late summer temperatures there. so 80s in albuquerque, 90s in el paso. coming up, wore going to break down your valley temperatures hour by hour. let's get to breaking news overnight, a dramatic water rescue after man crashes his

maryellen resendez is there right now. do we know if anybody was hurt. >> reporter: scottsdale fire all night have been working to try and get this submerged car out of the water. we want to kind of show you as you see the tow truck that they brought in, sort of a larger one because they needed something a little heavier duty. that's a car as you can see in the middle of the canal three quarters of the way submerged it's also quite a ways from where the tow truck is. if you look at the opposite banks, you can see where it actually drove through the fence. take a look at video we shot last night. we don't have a lot of information from scottsdale fire. it appears that the driver actually drove down the sidewalk green belt area busting through a gate over a

into the canal. again, we don't have a lot of information. we don't know exactly how that driver is. we do know that the car is still submerged out here, and scottsdale fire is trying to work to get this car out. we're going to be out here live. we'll let you know how it's going, live in scottsdale, maryellen resendez abc 15 news. a man and a child were hurt after a scary cr four different vehicles. look at that mangled mess being taken away on that tow truck. this happened eastbound at the 60 on superstition mountain last enjoying. those injuries were not serious, but they do say a suburban crashed into three other vehicles. traffic was restricted to one lane for hours. the cause of this crash still being investigated. let's get to an update to breaking news we brought you yesterday morning. a man's body found in an apartment that went up in

43rd avenue and thunderbird. fire officials investigating this one as possible arson. so far no information as to how that fire got started. one neighbor says she woke up to the sound of all of those fire trucks overnight. >> last night i heard sirens and i got up and there was a whole bunch of fire trucks. i think it's scary. i think it's weird. >> police have not yet released that man's identity. another update to breaking news from yesterday morning, a phoenix man leaving for work in the fight for his life this morn his own driveway. this happened in southwest phoenix near 35th avenue and southern. detectives say the man was heading to work early in the morning when he got into an argument with two suspects. one of those guys pulled out a gun and shot the man in the chest. a few car doors were open. detectives investigator willing these two suspects are connected to car burglaries in that area and if that led to the confrontation. neighbors say the victim has

they drive by and when they come out of the cars, you know, always say hi, how are you guys. you know, they're nice. i mean i never see them be in trouble, nothing like that. >> detectives are checking he or home surveillance cameras. police and you to speak up if you know about a stabbing that happened early saturday morning. a man is recovering in the hospital after being stabbed several times. this happened at a circle k. the victim was asleep in his car at the time when somebody walked up and attacked him. one of those stab wounds was to his neck. police still investigating. the remnants of tropical storm hermine being felt by people living in pasco florida. heavy floods in certain spots and at least two different deaths confirmed as well, just tragic. look at all that water. hermine slowly moving north

this labor day weekend. people living in rhode island, new jersey, massachusetts, are all new preparing for this storm. we have thlatest from our abc station in new jersey. >> how would you describe the waves right now? >> they're coming up really big. >> it was supposed to be a long holiday weekend of fun in the sun for many tourists. instead. >> when were you planning to go back? >> monday morning. >> oh, really. >> we're just a little worried because sometimes ocean city can get flooded. >> hermine is headed up the coast. while there's no evacuation for ocean it, many tourists already bounced on what should have been a busy labor day weekend. >> day trippers don't come. people that have rented things, oh, i'm going to leave early friday, and people that are coming saturday say i'm going to wait until monday, but you know, we'll revamp. >> the store was parked before today, so in other words, no,

>> mike wallace is moving store merchandise to higher ground. >> nothing's on the floor. >> nothing's on the floor right now. we've raised up everything. >> ocean city businesses are bracing for possible flooding. >> at worst-case scenario, we'll have maybe a foot or two. >> that was our abc station in new jersey. hermine starting as a hurricane, then downgraded to a tropical storm, but it could become a hurricane again later today, and it continues to gain strength. its powerful winds and they're already spotted the tornado in north carolina. dozens of beaches were forced to close yesterday. another tragic scene in florida after a small plane crashes killing two people on board. the cessna went into the atlantic ocean just east of fort lauderdale. that wreckage found about 200 yards offshore submerged in nearly 40 feet of water. that plane had several distress calls, too, but investigators are still trying to figure out what exactly went wrong hero.

flint michigan still impacting so many families, one company is stepping in. it's called the blue water generator. it uses the humidity in the air to generate purified water. the machine can make 8-gallons a day and dispense hot and cold water. the goal is to get the machine into more than 200 homes in flint, something residents say they desperately need. >> i'm tired of bottled water, having to go get it, lug it hole, take the bottles back >> residents have to fill out an application to be considered for this program that's providing the machines at no cost. turning now to democracy 2016, donald trump spending his saturday at church reaching out to african-american voters. >> i fully understand that the african-american community has suffered from discrimination and that there are many wrongs that must still be made right. they will be made right. >> trump attending services at

the republican nominee clapped along during worship. trump has faced a lot of criticism for talking about problems in the african- american in front of mostly white crowds. he told the crowd yesterday he would bring economic change. >> it's not about the speech or the message, it's the follow through. >> dr. ben carson service. president barack obama in china for the g20 summit. president obama says the u.s. and russia are working around the clock to make a deal to help stop the violence in syria. british prime minister theresa may is also there and says the uk will still be levering the european union. her goal is to make sure the uk has a healthy trade relationship with the u.s. may and mr. obama will meet later

this is different than what we saw yesterday when at this time we were starting probably in the 80s. it was mid to low 80s yesterday morning. right now we're in those 70- degree ranges, and i think things are pretty nice looking. maricopa some spots in the uppers 60s. in the meantime, here's a look at futurecast. we talked about the drying trend and what's going to be happening the next few days, and look, you're really seeing that here with futurecast as we stop this afternoon or this evening at 5 let's take it overnight into tomorrow morning, and you still see, we're really drying out and clearing out. our skies are going to stay clear, but some changes do start, and you can see that by tuesday we start to get a little bit of a push of moisture here. this will bring some clouds to the area, but also a slight chance for some storms and rain to develop here in our area. we'll be looking out for that. let's get to your temperatures and how everything is going to break down for you here.

yesterday. drier conditions. by lunchtime 93 degrees. we'll have plenty of sunshine to go around here. we'll keep skies clear as we get in through the evening, and by 5:00 we'll still be in the triple digits. hot today. it will still feel pretty toasty out there but below average. hot and dry today, by tomorrow we're topping out at 102. sunny for your labor day, and by the time we get into tuesday we'll have a slight chance for some showers that we talked develop in the valley. we'll be looking out for that. rain chances will increase later on. first, our forecast highs across the state, maybe you're heading up north today. take a look at these temperatures. 84 in payson, 85 in sedona, 80 in prescott. if you want to head to the grand canyon, i think it's going to be beautiful to do that. uppers 70s there. 90 and still lower triple digits out to the west.

highs today, below average for this time of the year which is 103. we'll be in the upper 90s in anthem. the rest of us will get into the triple digits, but low triple digits. we're talking 101 in apache junction, 99 in good year, but we are going to hit those triple digits in peoria and buck head as well. as we look ahead to tomorrow, here's a look at how your labor day is going to break down. i think it by tomorrow morning we're sticking in the 70s for the next couple of days as far as our overnight lows go. morning activities the perfect time to do anything like that. as we get into the rest of the day we are going to be in the 90s. not for very long, because look what happens as we take a look at your seven-day forecast. cooler temperatures are coming or less hot temperatures. first we've got to get through this next couple of day stretch. tuesday is when we start to see

in prescott you get a mixed bag of everything, upper 70s today. we'll be in the low 80s on monday and tuesday as well as you're heading back to start the week. i think these are going to be looking really nice for you. we are going to be talking about the valley today. we'll break down the temperatures. breaking news from overnight a dramatic water rescue after a man crashes his car into this canal. abc 15 maryellen resendez is there right now gathering the latest information for us. you just spoke with police, what are you finding out? >> reporter: yeah, police are telling us that the driver they're describing him as a middle aged male, and allegedly what he did is he blew through a stop sign at 78th street and lincoln and came down. it's kind of hard to see because it's fairly dark but came down this pedestrian path. they are investigating whether or not he was intoxicated. he then broke right through

the canal opening and into the canal. you're taking a look at video we shot last night when we were out here. this all happening last night. they've been trying to get this car out of the canal now. according to scottsdale police this canal has a lot of undercurrent and it runs fairly fast. they are waiting for a dive team to come out right now to help get that car out of there. they're going to have to push it a little bit and hook it up to a crane to actually get it we have both a tow truck and crane truck waiting to get this out of here. again, they've got dive team members having to come out, and the reason they need those dive team members is because there's such a strong current inside of there. now, we are being told that driver did suffer some minor injuries. everything's nonlife- threatening. he is going to be okay, and again, scottsdale police investigating whether or not there was impair. in this case. in scottsdale, maryellen

for answers two years after their loved one is murdered. this morning they're asking for your help. it was may 7th, 2014 that kevin ore was walking home from work at the rum runner bar near 7th street and northern. hours later somebody passing by finds kevin shot dead in the roadblocks away from his home. kevin's family tells us he had beaten cancer just before he was killed. >> until, you know, there's an arrest or out walking around and can do that to your family. >> silent witness is offering a reward of up to $4500 in this case. anyone with information should call silent witness at 480- witness. and you can remain anonymous. >> silent witness also offering a reward if you can help solve this case. a circle k worker pistol whipped during an armed robbery. right now police are asking for anybody to help out if they

morning hours of june 30th at 25th avenue and glendale. two men in their 20s came into the store and demanded money and cigarettes from the clerk. one of them hit the worker in the head with his gun. they filled a backpack and plastic circle k bag with cigarettes and beer before they ran out. right now this man is behind bars accused of taking stolen truck on a joyride. prescott police say santos stole a construction truck and calls started coming in about it driving recklessly, getting close to people, almost hitting other cars. officers caught up to the vehicle and he surrendered. a sad discovery in minnesota this morning, authorities now confirming that the remains found are those of a child kidnapped back in 1989. 11-year-old jacob wetterling was taken at gunpoint nearly 30 years ago in front of his home

a man named as a person of interest in this case was questioned by authorities and allegedly told them where that body could be found. dna test results are still pending this morning. a new jersey police officer remains in the hospital right now after a shooting yesterday in atlantic city. two suspects a 19 and 28-year- old now behind bars charged with attempted murder. authorities say two patrol officers stopped a group of men after observing a robbery near the caesar's casino parking garage. that's when they opened fire on him. that one offic hitting one suspect who was killed on scene. the second officer was shot while opening his door. let's go over to california now where two unarmed officers are in the hospital. panic striking as a man opened fire at a fresno jail. authorities saying the officers were shot during a struggle with a suspect who tried to cut through the front of the visitor's line and refused to take a seat. the officers were shot in the head and neck areas. one of them is in critical condition this morning. the other in stable condition.

year-old thong vang. he's a convicted rapist. he's now being charged with attempted murder. a foot chase in new mexico leads to a shootout killing a police officer and the suspect. officers tried to make contact with the man who has a long criminal history. he took off running, shots were fired from both sides. the suspect died at the scene, and the police officer died at the hospital. he leaves behind an 8-year-old daughter. it has been quite summer for amuse the ride scares right, and right now eight people are hurt after a ride shut down at the delta fair in memphis. the ride's computer detected a problem and went into safety mode. the operator panicked and stopped the ride before the safety bar was if place. two adults and six kids are if the hospital, but they were able to walk away from the moon raker ride without much help. it does sound like they are going to be okay: four people are seriously injured after a

irvine california. an elderly man struck a fence, another vehicle and even several pedestrians. the driver then hit an unoccupied police vehicle pushing it into a lawn where several people were pick anything. nine were hurt but only four had to be taken to the hospital. officers say there was no indication that this driver was intoxicated. everybody talking about that big earthquake felt across seven states. the epicenter striking north of we're now learning that part of the reason why there wasn't so much damage is because of some upgrades. experts are crediting the type of rock beneath that part of the country, hard bedrock is able to absorb more of an earthquake's energy. we have some parts of some buildings, we've seen some parts of buildings crumbling. no collapses, though, a lot of people crediting good infrastructure, nearly 40 wastewater disposal cells had to be shut down as a

taking a hit had double the recovery time. having a heart attack can be devastating and for those who are younger, it can be life changing, too. now a new research is shedding light on that one. in the past 30 years, the risk of dying after a heart attack has dropped from 13% to just about 3%. that's good news, and we can credit better treatments and less smoking for that. the not so good news, though, young survivors face nearly double the risk of early death than smokers should cut back on cigarettes, and for those with high blood pressure or high cholesterol try finding health ier food options. the latest report out from trust for america's health ranks arizona as the 34th highest state when it comes to that obesity rate here in the u.s. more than a quarter of the people in our state are now considered obese putting them at an increased risk for a wide

we're not alone. the only states where obesity rates went down, minnesota, montana, new york and ohio. a new experimental drug offering hope for millions of families battling alzheimer's. researchers in the journal nature report promising results this morning. early tests show the new treatment slows the development of plaque in the brain that's been linked to the loss of memory and thinking. the study was small and funded by the company that makes the drug so that could make a difference here but may offer a path to a potential as arizona gets ready to vote on legalizing recreational marijuana, more u.s. adults are using it. they're using it more often and far fewer people think it's risky. the attitude change comes as dozens of states now allow medical marijuana and four states recently legalized pot for recreational use. many patients dealing with chronic pain are sometimes skeptical of alternative pain relief treatments. we do want you to consider this. the national institutes of

police say that the driver was speeding, smashed through a guardrail, and flew over the embankment into the canal. right now they're poz poz -ldz. we do know the impact maded air bags deploy and a tow truck is now trying to get that car out of the water this morning. a road back open this morning after a man and a child were hurt after a bad wreck involving four vehicles. this one was on the eastbound 60 at superstition mountain last night. dps saying not serious. they did say a suburban crashed into three other vehicles there. traffic was restricted to one lane for hours. the cause of this crash now being investigated. a fire becomes an even bigger crime scene when a man's body was found inside a unit at this apartment complex. now firefighters are investigating this as a possible arson. it happened at an apartment complex near 43rd avenue thunderbird. so far no information as to how

sound of fire trucks all around her. >> last night i heard sirens and i got up so there was a whole bunch of fire trucks. i think it's scary. i think it's weird. >> police have not yet released this man's identity. people in a chandler neighborhood are on high alert after a string of fires in the area. this is something we've been following for days now. six suspicious fires in the last month near chandler and mcclintock, and this latest fire happening friday night. now neighbors are action. they're out there trying to look for suspicious activity. at this point police say those fires have been ruled suspicious, but they are not calling it arson, and they are looking to see if they're all connected. last night a fence caught fire, and the home right behind it was gutted in a fire earlier this week. before that fires were started in a trailer, a car, a shed, and backyard fence. one man told us he was driving around looking for suspicious

this is a fairly dangerous area. there's really strong currents underneath. they wanted to wait until it was daylight. the dive team will be entering the water shortly to try and get that car out of there. according to police, i want you to look a little bit to the west here. this car blew through a stop sign, and then came down that pedestrian path, hit that guardrail and they think at one point went airborne and may have flipped. you can see where the front bumper laying right there by the pole. this all happening just after we had crews out here just after it happened. you're looking at video that they shot last night of this. now we're told the driver may have been impaired. they are investigating possible impairment. he was rushed to the hospital with some injuries. we're told those injuries are nonlife-threatening, so police do feel that he is going to be okay. again, he blew through a stop sign near 78th street and lincoln. got on to a pedestrian path and just kept going. by the time he hit that

undetermined, crews have held this fire to under 30,000 acres since it started about three weeks ago. crews are hoping to have this fire fully contained by next weekend. this morning the fire still burning in california after six weeks. that fire has already burned through over 95,000 acres. right now crews only have it 60% contained too. several state parks have been closed for more than a month now including big sur. they have determined the fire started from campfire and there's no estimate on when they will have this fire fully contained. a heartbreaking update on a case dating back nearly 30 years. the remains of an 11-year-old minnesota boy who was abducted at gunpoint 27 years ago have finally been found. jacob wetterling's disappearance -- excuse me creation of a national sex offender registry. the announcement came after a

nobody has been charged in this case, but police do say they have a person of interest. a developing story right now, a new jersey police officer in the hospital after an early morning shooting. police say in atlantic city two patrol officers there stopped a group of men and the men opened fire on those cops. one suspect was killed and a man hunt is now underway for the five others who ran from the scene. >> imagine the panic at a fresno jail when a visitor the lobby started shooting. both shot in the head or neck. we're getting some mixed reporting right now. fresno detectives say eventually a lieutenant returned fire hitting the shooter who is also hurt. he hasn't been identified, but cops are saying that he has a long criminal past. what set him off. apparently he didn't like being confronted about cutting in line. that was it apparently. a foot chase in new mexico leads to a shootout killing a police officer and the suspect. police tried to make contact

criminal history. he took off running, then shots were fired from both sides, and the suspect died at the scene. that police officer was taken to the hospital. he's 33-year-old clint corvinas. he was pronounced dead there. he leaves behind an 8-year-old daughter. a man shot and killed police in his final resting place today. a funeral service held for philando castile yesterday in st. louis. this story garnering a lot of attentio minnesota during a traffic stop and his girlfriend recorded it all on facebook. now many people showed up to the place where he was killed to protest against police and ask for justice in his murder. this summer has had more than a few scares on amusement park rides. now eight people hurt after a ride shut down at the delta fair in memphis. this is some video from there. the ride's computer detected a problem and then went into

apparently panicked and stopped that ride before the safety bar was in place. we know that two adults and six kids in the hospital were able to walk away from the moon raker without much help. it does sound like they are going to be okay. an adult chaperon and 15 boy scouts had to be rescued when their 30-foot catamaran flipped over. this happened yesterday afternoon in the san francisco bay area. a coast guard crew responded to help marine police rescue the group. when they arrive kids were still clinging to that boat. the adult and all of the scouts were wearing their life jackets thankfully. none of them suffered any serious injuries, only minor cuts and scrapes and browses. neighbors come together to help a woman when her home catches on fire in maine with dozens of animals inside. they thought that bun bun, which is a 6 week old bunny would be killed in the fire, but crews were able to give this ball of fluff some oxygen

bouncing around. several other animals including two dogs, four goats, a couple of birds and cats thankfully all made it out safely. you know, those pets just become part of the family. i don't care what they are, pupnies, goats whatever, they become part of you. so happy they're all okay. with the holiday weekend here, many people are expected to hit the roads with their families and for many that also includes the pets. >> exactly, yeah, and officials with aaa arizona say if you're going to bring your pet car make sure they are secured. a new study by the group shows 48% of people who drive with a pet never restrained the animal. this can lead to added distractions to the driver, plus increased dangers for passengers here. now this study also shows that 16% of drivers become distracted by their pets. to avoid becoming distracted, officials suggest keeping pets maybe in the backseat because -- or you could attach a carrier maybe or a harness to the car's seat
