this is abc15 news taking action. >> happening now at 11:00, a man is dead after a strange chain of events. how phoenix police put their lives at risk, trying to save a gunshot victim. the latest in the war of words between donald trump -- and how others are jumping into the mix. and a bus driver behaving badly is caught on video. we'll give you a closer look at what she's accused of doing. good morning and thank you for joining us. i'm justin pazera. >> and i'm danielle lerner.

old phillip -- after someone recognized his truck. corcorian was connected to a pipe bomb incident last year when a mobile home was damaged. a group rented a boat at the lake yesterday. and as they were leaving firemen's cove. they noticed one group was missing. after searching the area, they called police for help. we have a crew headed to the lake and we'll give you updates throughout the afternoon. and another thing we noticed this morning, it was cooler out there. >> justin, welcome back. 91degrees in phoenix sky harbor. it was a little bit cooler and we are starting the warmup. the good news is it's not going to be outrageously hot.

relatively dry. and winds not bad. 6miles per hour. a little bit of a breeze kicking in. here's the most accurate forecast. by 1:00 we'll make it to 96 degrees. and at 4:00 i think we hit our high today of 102. and then you see in the evening hours we'll be in the mid- to upper 90s. we have big changes coming our way. tonight nice and warm and sunny. uv alerts are in place on the sunscreen. and i'm tracking tropical storm newton. and that could bring us quite a bit of rain later on this week. i'll tell you how much and when exactly we expect the tropical moisture. westbound mcdowell road is down to one lane after a crash. two cars were involved. a minivan had three adults and

thankfully, nobody was seriously injured. one woman got a cut on her arm. and a deadly fire ended with a car in an apartment building this morning. near 27th avenue and camelback. police think the man died from multiple gunshot wounds, not from the impact of going into the building. the victim is 28 years old. and got in an argument with people in another vehicle and shots were fired. the guy tried to get away and crashed right i apartment. responding officers thought part of the building was going to come down on the driver. they rushed in to pull him out and unfortunately, he died on the scene. also breaking overnight. phoenix police investigating a stabbing at 19th avenue and glendale. the victim here was just walking down the street and someone jumped out of a passing car and tried to rob him. the guy put up a fight and ended up getting stabbed and he

convenience store. the suspect took off. police are investigating a home invasion. katie conner has the latest. >> reporter: this was an absolutely terrifying night for this phoenix family. all night long, detectives have been going in and out. the homeowner woke up to several men inside his home stealing his stuff. the homeowner grabbed a gun started shooting at the suspects. >> reporter: when police got here they were able to rescue the homeowner and his 9-year- old daughter. police searched the neighborhood for the suspects but they were gone. and now they're talking with neighbors, hoping to get a suspect description. as soon as we get one we'll pass it on. we have sad news to report from the holiday weekend.

the colorado river near aaronburg. he was swimming under a bridge under i-10. and we're told the man's friends tried to save him and sadly, they weren't able to. our best wishes go out to a tempe police officer waking up pretty sore after a serious crash. this happened last night at the intersection of priest and warner near the ikea. both of the vehicles pretty smashed up. the driver of a black car who had a green light. we have not heard about injuries or charges. and we're trying to learn more after a man's body was found in an apartment that went up in flames near 43rd avenue and thunderbird. fire officials are investigating it as a possible arson. police have not released the man's identity. >> senator jeff flake is taking another swing at donald trump

johnson could spoil the vote for trump in our state. and now another arizona republican is joining the feud and taking sides. allison rodriguez has more from flake's office. >> reporter: this time the back and forth went online. the high profile feud going mobile on twitter actually. donald trump tweeting out saying the great state of arizona where i had a massive rally has a weak and ineffective senato flake. a short time later a tweet saying he was weak and not committed. senator flake appeared on 2 news shows over the weekend. and flake was not impressed. >> it really didn't explain with any clarity where he's going to move ahead in the future. it simply went back to some of the positions he's taken.

polling place last week. when he got there there was a sealed ballot box still sitting there that had not been packed up. he's concerned that some votes may not have been counted. >> i'm a little concerned this might affect the outcome or possibly worse if there are one or two ballots in here that could affect the outcome. and if there are three or four locations, it could add up. a spokesperson told not concerned. the box is still sealed and if any votes were missing, they would know based on the type of technology used. a bus driver loses her job after this video came to light. what one student hopes the footage would prove to the school and a parent. hermine is ruining holiday fun. we'll show you the region that

it was traced to an electrical issue in an air-conditioning unit. the aquarium was able to continue normal operations throughout the day. it could be a rough day on i-17 and the beeline highway. we saw the big backups headed to the high country and the rim. and all of those folks will be heading back home. labor day travel is up by 10% this year over last. and of those traveling, a whopping 60% said they were hitting the road. if you're planning on coming back to the valley. recommend getting an early jump. it could get messy. >> and play the license plate game. >> i used to play that. >> some places in the high country are not going to make it out of the 70s. today's temperatures -- >> we'll take them. i want to talk about that most accurate forecast for the you. this is tropical storm newton. and i want to just get into this for everybody. this is what can maybe bring us major rainfall this week. it's a brand new advisory that came out from the national hurricane center. here are the stats. sustained winds at 66 miles per hour. this has gotten significantly stronger since this morning. right now y and we have gusts 81 miles per hour. location-wise it's about a thousand miles to the south, southeast of phoenix. sounds like a ways out but it's going to get here quickly. looks like overnight it could strengthen to a category one storm. after that, i think it's going to weaken, at least based on the models we've been studying. by wednesday it's going to be

mexico. and by thursday that's when it looks like it could be in our neck of the woods. i think it's going to fall apart and be a low pressure system. what does that mean? we could see rain and wind but it's not going to be as organized as it once was. let's talk about the rain chances and how it could impact us. we could see a 10% chance for wednesday, thursday into friday, i'm thinking right now that's our best window to any shower activity. so just keep that in mind as we go throughout the rest of the 7- day forecast. and in the meantime, taking a look at currents, upper 80s across much of the valley. we're 89 in tempe. 89 in glendale. and 90s in cave creek. and 88 in surprise. and 90s in maricopa. here's the most accurate forecast for the you. we'll be in the mid- to upper 90s by 1:00.

in handcuffs. when the detective left the room, he made a move. >> he twisted the handcuffs until they broke. after they broke, he was able to flee the building. the pickup truck was recovered saturday but no sign of perez. he's a convicted felon and is accused of killing a man last weekend. police say he's armed and dangerous. police are searching for driver who hit a motorcyclist before driving it happened on i-10 westbound near 7th avenue. we know the motorcyclist was hurt. we are asking for details and the driver did not wait for officers to arrive or to find out if the rider was alive. two arizona women, including one from inside the valley killed in utah. the sheriff's office says the accident happened in the san flats recreation area in moab.

and destiny dixon of prescott. the two were trying to navigate an obstacle tried to tipover challenge. crews found the atv on fire. a restaurant manager stabbed six times while closing up 14067 and the whole thing caught on video. the attacker is on the run as the victim recovers. two people wearing bandannas and hats busted through the back door and pepper sprayed an employee. they went behind the bar, tackled the manager, and stabbed him over and over again. >> i'm hoping they charge them with attempted murder. they stabbed him six times and kicked him in the head three times. if that's not attempted murder, i don't know what is. >> workers say the back door was unlocked and they plan to beef up security and add 16 cameras at that location. it might be a holiday but

over the next 48 hours. as i fast forward, moisture and clouds start to fire up. after that we could see a surge of moisture from tropical storm newton right now this is -- here we go -- south of baja, california. about a thousand miles south of us in phoenix. press fast forward and we'll show you what happens. overnight to tomorrow it's going to strengthen to a category one hurricane. it's not long. it starts to weaken as it makes landfall. and then it stays as a tropical storm. and it's going to continue to weaken wednesday to thursday when it eventually becomes an area of low pressure. that's when we think it could make landfall in the u.s. and arizona. keep that in mind. right now it looks like it's going to weaken as it goes over mexico. and we won't see as much rain
