gabriel. dan is off today and we have iris back just in time because we have big changes. >> and we're all keeping a close eye on hurricane newton impacting the baja peninsula. that's where it's impacting now. we'll be watching it closely over the next few days. we have dry air in place across the valley and all of the moisture sitting south. and you can see hurricane newton off to the south. and eventually, all that moisture moving in and we have increasing rain chances heading our way over the next 24 to 48 hours. this morning, no impacts. it's dry. and we have mostly clear skies and the temperatures are not feeling too bad. we're sitting at 80 degrees. we warm to 95 by lunchtime. and by this afternoon you'll notice the clouds increasing

storm chances as the high tops out at 100 degrees. we'll talk more about the storm chances in just a few minutes. no problems on the roads this morning as you head out after your long holiday weekend. you're seeing all green on the freeways. in the west valley, just a 10 minute desert drive time southbound from grand avenue until you hit the 10. i was telling you about downed everything is cleared up there. we'll head up to the north valley next and give you a look at what to expect here. sheriff's deputies will be heading back out on the water at lake pleasant at first light here, very shortly. they'll be resuming the search for a man who went missing over

and justin pazera is live. >> reporter: this was supposed to be a weekend on the lake. just a fun time with a bunch of friends, and it's turned into day three of a desperate search. let's get you caught up. the 24-year-old rented a boat with several of his friends. his name is chin tan shan. they were in the firemen's cove area. and when they started to come back them. they were thinking he went back to shore. and eventually, they went back for help, hoping someone would be able to find their friend. >> we've been trying to exhaust means of phone calls, if this person went home or went some place with friends. >> reporter: the search is expected to start again this morning. and they'll be using sonar,

shan is at. the search is expected to pick back up this morning. justin pazera, abc15. >> thanks for that. firefighters are still keeping a close eye on a scrap yard for flareups after a huge fire yesterday. you might have seen that huge plume of smoke. the scrap yard caught fire, mostly tires and mel. but toxic gases were posing the biggest threat and we always heard explosions. >> a lot of times, the gases get compressed in a confined area. if you're sitting around a campfire and a log explodes, that's the same thing. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. paradise valley putting out an alert after a man is arrested for aggravated

point. officers say joshua randolph hit and choked a person. this unfolded in lincoln yesterday. he was charged with aggravated assault. paradise valley is reminding you if you see something happening, say something. sounds like somebody called this one in after spotting it. >> meantime this former police officer is back in court. jeffrey streeter is accused of secretly recording avondale tanning salon. he put a camera phone on top of a dividing wall and recorded 20 women as they undressed. streeter is a nine-year veteran of the good year prosecuted. his conference starts at 8:30 and he's pleaded not guilty. a valley man is accused of running a house of prostitution in 2013. william hartwell and eight

the charges from 2013 were dropped and he was reindicted last year. his pretrial conference set for the 8:30 this morning. and a court of appeals just ruled that sex offenders have to let the state know where they a even if they don't have a home. usually they have 72 hours to register a new address. let this state know every 90 days. new developments in the case of a man accused of killing an 8-year-old bull head city girl. little bella died two years ago. if convicted he may face a death sentence. prosecutors have established enough probable cause to seek the death penalty. a judge just made the decision

the child's death. there is evidence she was sexually assaulted before she was killed. the university of arizona could be making big changes to their tobacco toll plaza on campus. a proposed policy would mean e- cigs would be added to the list of substances not allowed at the university. as we track what is currently a hurricane, newton over the peninsula of baja, california. here's the deal. it's going to stay a category one hurricane as it continues to work its way north. it will impact western mexico as a category one hurricane before it quickly weakens. weakening as an area of low pressure before it makes it to our state. we'll get the remnants and a big boost of moisture. and all of that will combine to bring big changes our way. here's what to expect over the next 24 hours.

hurricane as it moves into western mexico. for southeast arizona, maybe you've got family in tucson or plans to head to arizona. biggest impacts later this afternoon and tonight. especially right along the mexico border, areas like nogales need to be alert today. we could see a bit of a dust threat in the phoenix metro are storms that develop to the southeast. there's a slight a slight chance of evening storms as we go into late this afternoon too. but the rain chances get better tonight and tomorrow. i'll break down the storm chances for you in just a few minutes. desert drive times brought to you by centurylink prism. take a look at the 101. green as you're traveling eastbound.

our way, including increasing rain chances as we track what will soon be the amendments of hurricane newton. i have the latest updates in just minutes. meantime an ocean front home in rhode island goes up in flames. take a look at the fire just destroying everything. it started inside the home and the coastal winds made it tough to put out. and getting water to the home was also an issue. and in wisconsin an historic old school house burned down. firefighters tried to put the flames from outside and eventually had to tear the building apart. the former lincoln school was built in 19 at the. the owner says it's been. for 15 years. police k-9 chases down a suspect in los angeles. he ran into the hills to escape officers and decided to take his clothes off.

but you can't escape a helicopter. the k-9 got him. and the suspect tried to push the dog away. and the dog decided to pull him down the hill. may have a brush burn. new developments right now in the jacob wetterling's remains. the suspect may have gotten a plea deal for the information on where to find the remains. if the plea deal does not go through, his trial will begin next month. thousands of nurses spent labor day on the picket lines. as of now, there's no end in sight. the five hospitals impacted have hired replacement nurses to try and minimize the impacts to patients.

chandler is checking in at 71. 72 in anthem. and 71 in cave creek and peoria you're also coming in in the low 70s. very comfortable, nice and dry as you make the early morning plans. here's how the warmup happens. it's going to be a bit of a cooler day. and a gradual warmup. we won't make it into the upper 80s until 9 a.m. we get to hold into the early afternoon. 96 by 1:00. and today's high temperature, 3 degrees lower than yesterday, up to 100 degrees. and we should hit that around 3:00 or 4:00 this afternoon. that's where the temperature will peak and then we start to see the temperature trending down. temperature-wise not doing so bad but the humidity will feel higher by this evening. 100 for a high in phoenix and

and cooler to the southeast as the storm chances start to go up and the monsoon moisture increases thanks to what will be the remnants of hurricane newton moving towards our state. storm chances going into tomorrow up to a 40% chance. we'll talk more about the hazards in just a few minutes. and your delays on i-10 are extending just slightly. from 83rd avenue to 67th avenue. this is for all drivers coming in from the west valley on 10. starting to see the rush hour out there. take a look. all green. 90% of the valley freeways not seeing any delays. this is for loop 202 to u.s. 60 and the rest of the east valley freeways are seeing the same conditions as well. we'll look at i-17 next. coming up at 5:30, a little

the west valley. take a look at 67th avenue basically between 83rd and 67th. it's the heaviest of it. and all the lanes are slowing. let's switch over to the traffic map. that's probably the heaviest spot and that continues until 51st avenue. and we do have a new crash. i'm trying to get new details. i-10 eastbound could be blocking the hov lane. i'll try and get a picture of it and let yo could impact the morning drive next. it was supposed to be a fun labor day weekend out on mount pleasant but it's a memorable one for all the wrong reasons. a man is still missing at this moment. and justin pazera is live with the search efforts. it's about to get underway again, correct? >> reporter: it is supposed to start again. they've spent two days looking

they'll be looking for that young man. he's 24-year-old chintan shan. he was on a boat with several other friends this weekend when they were in the firemen's cove area. they started to come back to shore and they noticed that shan was not there. they were yelling for him and couldn't find him. eventually, the group of friends came back and contact would be able to find their friend. we talked with other folks on the lake, and they are very sad to hear this news. >> supposed to be here for a good time and when something tragic happens on a holiday, you never want to hear something like that. >> reporter: so again, mcso is expected to start the search this morning.

pazera, abc15. >> let us know the minute something develops. and a west valley family is waiting this morning while their little girl is on a ventilator after being pulled from a backyard pool. she did not have a pulse. but paramedics managed to bring back her pulse. this home is near 87th and camelback. it's not clear how the 2-year- old ended up in the water. a family until help arrived. we're 63 days away from the presidential election. we are a couple hours away from two exclusive interviews. david muir will sit down with hillary clinton and tim kaine as well as donald trump and mike pence. a brand new pole by the washington post and they interviewed people in all 50

places like mazatlan are on. no delays for now. but we'll continue to check shows. we're taking action for you. and what i did overnight was check to see a list of flights headed to cabo. and i found a half dozen or so. there were direct flights from phoenix sky harbor on american airlines. and two of those were actually delays. and i also saw a few alaska airlines flights. the second leg of those trips was canceled on that one. the good news is i've checked and a number of airlines are waiving the change fees to let people either come home in time or just cancel their trips all together at least for now to make sure that they are staying safe and avoiding any inclement weather because of newton. and i just checked online. and air mexico is also waiving

a world war ii veteran is about to board an honor flight that's taking him to see the world war ii memorial in washington for the first time. mario mobilia enlisted the day after he graduated high school and was deployed to japan after pearl harbor. he's about to turn 90 and he's excited to be reunited with the men he served side by during world war ii. >> it's going to be a real fun day to be with other guys, exchange stories et cetera. >> the trip is paid for by honor flight arizona which has helped 1200 veterans make the trip to washington, d.c. thank you so much to all veterans out there. i have some neighbors who are

phoenix children's hospital valley cam looking over state route -- and the loop 20 the. you don't have to worry about rain for the commute. all is dry. and we are going to stay dry through the morning. as you look at the most accurate forecast. it won't be until late this afternoon and evening that the storm chances start to go up. plan on a temperature at 80 degrees under clear skies as you step outside. very comfortable to start your day. we have plenty of 70s across the valley too. a gradual warmup, climbing to 90 by 10 a.m. and the hundred degrees we'll hit around 3:00 or 4:00. this afternoon and evening more clouds are starting to work in from the south. and the storm chances will start to increase. and it's due to the remnants of hurricane newton. still a category one hurricane.

category one hurricane as it moves into western mexico. and then it quickly weakens after that. and the track of it, tracking right into southeast arizona as an area of low pressure. even though this will track east of the valley. we're going to feel a surge in the moisture across southern arizona and that means increasing rain chances for us here. i'll break down the storm chances further and we'll talk about hazards next. slow spots on the 10. crash. it's blocking the hov lane so stay to the right. the delays are already back to the 17 stack is what we're seeing. and before that we're up to a 21-minute desert drive time. so much slower than we typically see at this time of the morning. you have a small break in between that other crash. the valley-wide -- the only issue is i-10.

6:06 this morning. if you're heading out soon. plan on the temperatures in the 70s to low 80s, and mostly clear skies with dry conditions as you step outside. so it's not going to feel humid this morning. that will change as we go into this afternoon and evening. by the time you're heading home a difference in how humid it feels. more humid to muggy as we get a boost in the monsoon moisture thanks to what is currently hurricane newton but wi the remnants. we're going to get warm today. back in the triple-digits and just barely. phoenix topping out at 100 degrees this afternoon. and then this afternoon we'll watch for the threat of dust and possibly a stray thunderstorm. this morning, all clear, all dry. and as the moisture starts to increase as newton again starts to get closer, we'll see the storms firing up in southeast arizona first. that's why we'll have to watch for the dust threat as we could

this evening and a slight chance of a pop-up thunderstorm or two. and even though future cast is not doing a good job showing you, we could see more scattered showers and thunderstorms overnight tonight and through tomorrow morning in the valley. and through the day tomorrow, the scattered showers and storm chances continue although the bulk of the rain will be across the southeast pocket of the state. on wednesday and even into valley. we've got to keep our guard up. any slight shift in the track of newton could mean big changes for forecast so you'll want to stay tuned. tomorrow a mostly cloudy day and a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. and a high of 90 degrees. much cooler weather as we increase our storm chances. we'll talk more about the hour- by-hour temperature breakdown in just a few minutes. and we have a new crash

17. take a look. this is where the slowing kind of begins, even probably before that. the crash was near mcdowell and blocking the center lane. and things could get worse before they get better. take a look at the desert drive time. it's about 11 minutes, and that's from dunlap until mcdowell. and also slow around the durango curve. a lot of hot spots inbound near 75th and another near and approaching the staff. the crash we had near the minute stack is clear. it was supposed to be a fun day on the lake and has turned into the worst possible scenario for a group of friends. the latest on the search for a missing boater. and a mobile home goes up in flames. the massive fire happening in arizona. more on how the family had to
