safely. and the cdc issuing new recommendations when it comes to flu vaccines. thanks for starting your day with us. mallory is keeping a close eye on the desert drive times and you've had a busy morning. big changes. >> big changes and we are under a flash flood watch. let me show you the areas covered. phoenix will be under the watch starting at 11:00 tonight and continuing through day. southeast arizona under the watch earlier as we go evening as we anticipate big changes and the threat of heavy rain. the good news is as you head out, it's all dry and we have the mostly clear skies. we are six minutes away from sunrise and this is what you'll see when you walk out. very nice conditions this morning. and it's cooler. we're now down to 79 degrees. a great start. we warm to 95 by lunchtime. and today's high 100.

the storm chances go up. and we'll show you which hazards we'll be on the lookout for. >> things are definitely slower on the 10 for west valley drivers, but it's improving. this is 67th, right about 75th to 67th. and it's looking better than 15 to 20 minutes ago. about 20 minutes eastbound from the 101 really slow near 67th where i was showing you. and then 43rd. i can tell you there was a crash near the ministack and that's why you're seeing the delays. also a crash near the stack and i-17 is sluggish. we have moments away from the desperate search resuming for a glendale man missing since sunday at lake pleasant. justin pazera is live at the

about to begin this. >> reporter: hey, chris, it's really quite this morning. and if you take a look, you can see a lot of the boats that are docked. and really take a look at how big the lake actually is. you can just imagine how hards the for them to find someone that's missing in this place. the 24-year-old rented a boat with several other friends, and they were in the firemen's cove area and when they started to come back to shore they noticed they were hoping he was going to be able to respond. they asked mcso for help and they went out and searched for this guy. unfortunately, they have not been able to find him. >> we've been trying to exhaust means of phone calls if this person got out of the water and went home or went to another place with friends. >> mcso will be using sonar this morning to try to look

into where the young man is at. the search will start up again this morning danielle. thank you for the update. fire crews will be back in the valley scrap yard looking into what caused this fire. you see all the black smoke filling the sky. this happened near 27th avenue and broadway. some crews stayed on scene through the night. the fire mostly engulfed tires and metal. and some witnesses heard s explosions. no one was hurt but the cause is under investigation. breaking overnight a mobile home in tucson goes up in flames. there's a story behind this. the tucson fire department posting this video on facebook as a family of four escapes safely. why? because the dog was barking and alerted them to the smoke and the fire. isn't that amazing? the cause is under investigation. and the firefighters here reminding everybody to check

your give your dogs treats today. >> good advice. in democracy 2016, we're a week out from the arizona primary. and one race is still too close to call. we're talking about the republican race for district 5. andy biggs beating jones by -- enough to order a recount. the results are presented to thco announcement is made. all of this paid for through taxpayer money. it could be weeks before the process is complete. maricopa county's top election official is learning there will not be a recount in her race. flannery doesn't have the rain showerses or a reason to doubt the count and won't be pushing

the university of arizona could soon be making changes to the tobacco policy on campus. a proposed policy would add e- cigs to the list of products banned at the school. it was proposed in 2014 but a task force looked into the effects. we'll be tracking big changes so keep the app handy. all calm and clear.

out there as we look over camelback mountain. temperatures in the 70s and low humidity too. all eyes to the south as we track hurricane newton. you can still see the eye of the storm over the baja, california peninsula. that storm will continue to track north and eventually is going to move towards our state. it will weaken before then but that's what we're keeping an eye on. that's what will bring us the changes. wind gusts upwards of 100 mil per hour. and it will continue to track north over the next 24 hours and it's going to stay as a category one hurricane until it moves into inland mexico and then it weakens. moving through southeast arizona through the day tomorrow. and that's what is going to bring us the enhanced storm chances, also the moisture it's bringing our way. notice the track is really focused in southeast arizona and we'll feel the impacts in

it will weaken again once it makes landfall. showers and storms will develop and continue through tonight. a slight chance of dust, storms, and rain chances go up tomorrow. i'll show you the hour-by-hour breakdown next. and we have a crash on i- 10. everything is off on the left- hand side, not blocking traffic. and this is eastbound at 43rd avenue. but any time there's a crash, it could add and you can see the delays making your way inbound on i- 10. and i-17 we had a crash near the i-10 stack, closer to about mcdowell. everything is clear and that's why you're seeing traffic back to about camelback or so. and we'll give you a look at the east valley drive in just a few minutes. we're seeing delays and cancellations in the skies all because of newton. we're taking a look at the boards, and taking action, and

minutes. this is a live look at our nation's capital as it's back to work for members of congress and lawmakers as they face big issues. some of the top issues i want to pass along for you. congress has until the end of the month to fund the federal government and prevent a shutdown. deja vu. and lawmakers will try to pass funding for the zika virus. they were the fund -- for the zika virus and decided to take their seven week summer recess instead. and zika is taking a toll of florida. a lot of restaurants and businesses were empty for the labor day holiday. they are hoping that mosquito control efforts will bring the tourists back. they are ramping up efforts to kill mosquito larva. and video as president obama arrives in laos.

president to visit the southeast asian country and today he's only meeting with its president because he canceled a meeting with the president of the philippines after he lashed out at president obama. president obama is planning to confront him over the killing of drug dealers without due process. overnight, the philippines president said he regrets his strong comments that came across as a >> a georgia father is counting his blessings. this is surveillance video from an atlantic gas station. the man had issues with his credit card and went inside to pay. a man jumps in the car and takes off. the man didn't realize that 1- year-old twins were in the backseat asleep. the car was found a short distance later. one of the girls was dumped in

police are searching for the suspect. and in north carolina, reports that someone in a clown costume tried to lure two kids into the woods sunday night. parents are staying on high alert. >> who in the world goes around dressed in a clown costume trying to lure people. that's scary in itself. >> there have been reports in south carolina and wisconsin. the wisconsin one turned out to be a marketing stunt short film. a bittersweet moment for a mother in nebraska. she got to hear her son's heart beat after his death. he shot himself while playing with a gun he thought didn't work. and this weekend -- she admits organ donation was not an easy choice but one that he would have wanted. >> he come to me and said mama,

cities with the low 70s. mesa, deer valley, glendale all checking in at 73. many valley cities only making it into the upper 90s to around 100 degrees. the most accurate forecast not too hot but it will start to feel more humid by this afternoon. and by tonight, muggy. muggy through the day tomorrow too. as we go into this afternoon, we stay dry through the morning. this afternoon into the evening. the storm to a 20% chance by 10:00 this evening. we'll be watching for a stray thunderstorm or two this mid- to late afternoon. and it will start developing in southeast arizona first. and we could see the dust at a result. going into tonight and through the day tomorrow, the chances are up. scattered storms will be a possibility in the phoenix metro. and because of the track of hurricane newton and eventually the remnants moving into

of the more widespread rain will be in southeast arizona. keep in mind in any light shift to the east of the west could change the forecast. you'll want to stay tuned. we'll be updating through day today and tomorrow. notice by tonight we start to see more widespread showers and storms to the southeast. and the shower and storm chances continue through the day on wednesday, but the valley has a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms through tomorrow. and any storms that develop will have the potential of producing heavy rainfall. we go from 100 today to 90 degrees for a high tomorrow because of the increasing rain chances and the cloud cover as well. but we've got to talk about the flood alerts and i'll show you the areas that will be under the alerts in just a few minutes. mallory-- and your desert drive time on u.s. 60 is 14 minutes so

hurricane newton is causing headaches. and we're taking action, getting to the bottom of the cancellations and delays. >> and we have got to talk about the race to the white house. the candidates are now neck and neck in a new poll. this as they head to the critical state for upcoming elections. and a warning for anyone getting the flu vaccine this year. the cdc is out with new recommendations and we'll be breaking th dan is enjoying some well deserved time off. all is clear. if you're just waking up. you've heard all this talk about of hurricane newton not impacting our state as of yet. we are all clear, all dry across the state. the changes start to kick in as we head into the afternoon. for the valley. mild and dry as you may be walking to the bus stop.

you're picking up kids from school. it's going to feel more humid but the temperature only makes it to 100 degrees today. as we head into the evening, the storm chances go up and the threat for dust is there as well. and a big surge in the moisture by tomorrow with better storm chances for the phoenix metro. i'm going to track the latest alerts so you know what to expect. but nick ciletti is at sky harbor. and hurricane newton is writing changes for us. and also affecting flights this morning. >> reporter: i have two brand new updates for you. the first un, i just spoke with american airlines. there was supposed to be an 8:40 flight from phoenix to cabo and that's been delayed for three hours and could be canceled. and the second update -- i actually just tweeted it out --

of the change fees. i found about half a dozen flights. one of the american airlines flights we know is going to be delayed. and i checked with alaska airlines and found out that the second legs of those flights from phoenix sky harbor are actually canceled. and the good news is with alaska airlines, you can change your flights an pay a fee. and i checked with aero mexico, and the same deal. >> for more updates. head to abc15.com. the turbulence doesn't stop there at sky harbor. british air ways is doing a lot of apologizing saying sorry as

delayed, canceled, worldwide here. an i.t. glitch affected check-in desks. and one flight was delayed. on the ipad i pulled up the twitter page. and tweet after tweet after tweet just apologizing to so many as they are taking to social media to complain. they're having the ripple effect. let's br roads. we're seeing the delays on the freeways. take a look at i-10 at 75th avenue. super slow as you're making your way eastbound. and we have a crash on the right-hand side that's going to add to the delays. and we'll give you a closer look at the desert drive times. 18 minutes from 75th avenue to the ministack. it's heavy between 75th and 43rd. we have another crash on the left-hand side.

the valley is slowing down near the 17. we'll break down the north valley commute in a couple of minutes. mcso dive teams and deputies will be out on the waters as they resume the search for a man in his 20s who disappeared without a trace. just vanishing on lake pleasant. justin pazera is on the scene where the search is just about to begin. right, justin. >> reporter: hey, ri is a big mystery for the friends on where the 24-year- old is at. we're on the shoreline and his friends were hoping that 24- year-old chintan shan maybe swam to shore or walked up to shore. they were calling for him. and since sunday they have not seen him. we are in day three searching for him. he rented a boat with several

the firemen's cove area. they did a headcount and noticed that shan was not with them. they made their way back to shore and that's when they contacted mcso hoping they would be able to find their friend. other folks are sad to hear the news. >> supposed to be here for a good time. and when something tragic happens on a holiday, you never want to hear something like that. >> so you can see how big this lake is right here. they'll be using sonar equipment to look down in the water hoping for any clues. the search is expected to start again this morning. >> thank you, justin. and we are still waiting for an update on a 2-year-old girl who was pulled from a backyard pool in the west valley near 87th avenue and camelback. it's not clear how she ended up

member started cpr and she did have a pulse when paramedics arrived. the cdc is giving new recommendations when it comes to the flu vaccine. many doctors are not offering the nasal spray vaccine in year because a lot of studies show it doesn't protect against a lot of strains of the flu virus. it's not too early to get vaccinated. 63 days out from the presidential elections and the candidates slowing down. both donald trump and hillary clinton will be visiting key battleground states and doing a lot of traveling. the gop nominee will be campaigning in virginia and north carolina. and the former secretary of state will be in florida. both were in ohio monday. trump talked immigration. clinton blasted russia over a suspected hacking scandal. and we are just minutes away from a big exclusive for

and katie conner is at one of the valley's 3 itt tech locations. what can you tell us? >> itt tech will close all of its schools, including this phoenix campus. the company has been around for 50 years. and a federal investigation with the department of investigation has prompted them to close. recently, the for profit was slapped with strict sanctions. starting today, the company says the majority of employees around 8000, will lose their jobs. what is unclear is how this will impact former students of itt tech. and this is a developing story and we'll let you know when we learn more about these closures. >> >> this is brand new this morning. a deadly holiday in chicago. listen to this.

over the labor day weekend. most happened overnight going into monday morning. 65 people were shot, including a woman who was nine months pregnant. and the shootings are the worst so far this summer. this is the 512th homicide in chicago this year. far outpacing new york and los angeles, danielle. >> just staggering numbers, chris. and this former officer is heading back to work. he's accused of recording women at an avondale tanning salon. streeter put a camera phone on top of a dividing wall and recorded as many as 20 women while they undressed. he's pleaded not guilty. and a valley man accused of running a studio that served as a house of prostitution is

following a police raid of his business near sky harbor. the charges from 2013 were dropped and he was reindicted last year. we are still tracking hermine. the tropical system has stalled off the east coast. it did damage in massachusetts. many beaches closed for the labor day weekend. and it's not stopping these guys. catching some air there. and tropical storm warnings remain in effect states including connecticut and massachusetts. and iris hermosillo is joining us now. >> we're keeping a close eye on hurricane newton. it's moving over baja, california. and you can see the eye of the storm. it looks to continue to be a hurricane as it moves into the northwestern mexico coast. so that's something we're keeping a close eye on. it will weaken before it moves

and packing wind gusts upwards of a 100 miles per hour. remaining a category one and weakening quickly over the sierra madre. and eventually becoming an area of low pressure. looks like the track will stay southeast of the valley for the remnants of the hurricane. and we'll feel the impacts in the valley. we'll get a boost in moisture. because of that, in anticipation of what could be heavy flooding rain, we are going to be under a flash flood watch all of southeast arizona through tonight and through the day tomorrow. as the storm chances go up. we're looking at the potential of flooding rain. and today we could see dust. i'll show you the hour-by-hour storm chances and we'll talk temperatures. we have a traffic alert for u.s. 93.

directions in wiccanberg because of -- >> there's a smart route to get around this detour. that will take you to u.s. 60. in the valley. we don't have major traffic alerts, but we have delays in the north valley. loop 101 eastbound from 35th to 7th. it's slow and go. you'll see almost double the desert drive times. and we have a crash on the 17 as we camera. i-17 northbound at the grant exit ramp. it's blocking the turn lane. you could see delays there on the 17. we'll give you a look at i-10 in a few minutes. prince harry is making a difference for para olympians. there are 11 competitors including elizabeth marks who

into a ball of flames. >> it was scary. my adrenaline was up like let's get this guy out. you don't know what's going to happen. >> we were trying to take turns with all the glass and the heat and the smoke. it was hard to see him. >> just amazing. >> this cell phone video taken after that man was saved. no word on and if the good samaritans didn't pull him out he wouldn't have survived. we were there as a veteran packed for a trip to d.c. he enlisted after high school and was deployed to japan after pearl harbor. he's about to turn 90 years old. and is excited to be reunited with the men he fought side by side with during world war ii.

to watch for a few storms first this evening. and the threat of dust is there before we get the better potential of rain. and we could get strong winds too. the rain threat will be the biggest hazard over the next 24 hours. and we're talking the potential of flooding rainfall too. the phoenix metro will be under the flash flood watch starting at 11:00 tonight. and southeast arizona looking to get hit the hardest as we track what will eventually be newton. we're going to see the storm chances going up, especially near nogales and douglas. we'll initially have to watch for the threat of dust in the valley as the storms get going into the south. the storm chances going up in the phoenix metro. and i think we've got a shot at more scattered showers and thunderstorms overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. and the widespread rain will

arizona through the day tomorrow. in the valley, a 40% chance for scattered storms for us. and that flooding threat is going to be there. we'll talk temperatures in the 7-day forecast and when we'll see the system clear out in just a few minutes. as we have plenty of slowdowns throughout the valley. lots of batches of red. and in the east valley, things are starting to slow down. loop 101 northbound is the worst of it. this is right near warner where it slows down between elliot. and as you're traveling near chandler, slow and go. this is the 101 eastbound from the 17 to the 51 and on the 10, it's definitely slow and go. 30 minutes as you're heading inbound. and let's give you a look at one of the crashes at 43rd avenue. everything is off on the left- hand side.
