breaking news right now out of lake pleasant, the body of chintan shan has been recovered. his parents asked for volunteers to help them search. >> the 24-year-old was with a group of friends and somehow slipped away from the group. we're working to get more details for you. count updated. and bringing heavy rain and possible flooding, a tropical storm headed across parts of arizona right now. >> look at this video from mexico as tropical storm newton makes initial landfall in the baja peninsula, and southern arizona is bracing for a lot of rain and the threat of flash flooding. >> take a look at this video from earlier this morning. on the left you see the rain falling from baseline. on the right the road

drive. thankfully n the east valley, there were no major problems on the roads. and i was just outside a little bit ago. and it's definitely humid. >> it's rich tropical moisture that has surged in across the state. newton is really moving through southeast arizona here this morning. that's where the main track of it is. it's crossing the border and moving up to spots like show low. and you can see that the clouds we're feeling the moisture across the state and getting some of the rain. the heaviest most widespread hain has been confined to southeast arizona and we had pockets near gila bend. so far, fairly spotty showers, but under the thicker clouds we have areas of light sprinkles. some heavier rain across parts of the west valley over the white tanks tracking to the southwest.

this hour. as we go through the next few hours, there is a chance for more of these showers across the phoenix metro. and once we get into this afternoon, the chance is there for a few scattered showers, possibly some thunderstorms too. we're not completely in the clear. but the overall biggest impacts will be across southeast arizona. 82degrees and still humid. 63%. and we'll struggle to get to 90 degrees. and we ha storms. i'll break down the afternoon hour-by-hour planner for you next. the flood control district is busy right now behind the scenes. er in tracking the weather activity and ready to respond if the weather gets bad. >> old u.s. 80 north of patterson road has to be closed this morning. raquel cervantes reports for us. >> reporter: drivers are pulled over to the side of the road.

seconds water came rushing across the highway. this is the rainbow wash at the old u.s. 80 north of patterson road. crews with the maricopa county department of transportation were quick to close off the road. drivers have approached and then turned away. the washes may not seem deep but it's not something you want to get stuck in. you don't know what kind of debris there is and how quicy the water is moving. >> the county is big, right? it's about 10,000 square miles. there's a lot of washes. there's a lot of unbridged washes. there's a lot of people living in maricopa county and a lot of areas that could be affected. >> reporter: it goes to show how much damage the water can do. and phoenix police were forced to shoot and kill a man

the deadly confrontation happened in a neighborhood near 37th street and thomas. police were called there by the suspect's own mother. she first called police yesterday afternoon saying that her son was acting in her words psychotic. he took off before cops got there. when he returned last night. so did police. he came out with the sword strapped to his hand. police used stun was not complying. the investigation continues at this hour. a wild crime spree that you saw on our mobile app. police chasing bank robbers all through town. katie conner brings us the latest. >> reporter: the investigation is far from over. these men could be tied to other recent bank robberies in the valley. the chase came to an end at i-

keep a close eye on tropical storm newton. let me show you the rain amounts. this is update across the valley. a few isolated spots of rain picking up a quarter inch of rain. peoria, and good year and a quarter of an inch in mesa. and buckeye getting more rain, close to an inch of rain. we've still got plenty more time to continue to add to the rainfall amounts. it's something we'll be watching through the afternoon. right now we've got the cloudy, overcast skies across the valley. and it's feeling humid too. and all of the clouds spreading in as we continue to track tropical storm newton. technically, the core, the

located just a few miles south of our arizona border. it will eventually cross over the border here soon and continue to lift through the southeast pocket of our state. you can see those clouds really thick, as they push through safford and show low. and it is still a tropical storm producing some sustained winds at times near 45 miles per hour. it will continue to weaken thou a eventually moving through southeast arizona as an area of low pressure or a tropical depression as we go through the rest of today. it is looking like it's going to cross the border as a tropical storm. we'll keep you posted as the day goes on as we get the official confirmations. the rain is impacting central arizona as the storm system brought the surge in moisture.

in the valley. we've had it off and on throughout the morning. let's talk about what we've seen so far. you'll notice as expected that the biggest rainfall amounts are across southeast arizona. as we've been telling you, that's where the biggest impact is going to continue to be. spots like nogales, upwards of 2 1/2 inches of rain. tucson, almost an inch and the rain continues to fall as tropical storm newton officially moves into our state. the valley, not seeing as much of the rain. but a few spots around a quarter of an inch. and buckeye is where we've seen the most so far. and the rain does continue to fall. a little heavier across western maricopa county right now. we have light showers across the phoenix metro.
