his car on i-17 hit and killed. now the search for the person who did it. and hillary clinton facing new scrutiny about health and transparency after a big stumble on sunday. happening right now at 5:00. iris has been pinpointing the forecast. and we have a thousand customers in the fountain hills and reports of a brush fire in that area. >> that's where we've seen lightning and the heavy rain. let me show you the latest on desert doppler. i'll show you where the storms are. basically, moving over roosevelt lake and we had areas of heavy rain, strong winds and a lot of that lightning over fountain hills. you see that? so not surprised that we're seeing the power outages in that area. as you look at desert doppler

off to the northeast. if we could get rid of the bank your guys. producing quite a bit of lightning and heavier rain over roosevelt lain. that's going to push to the northeast. and a lot of lightning near payson. and these storms are pretty intense, producing the lightning. a very dangerous situation if you're outside. get indoors until the storms pass. they are tracking to the northeast. all of this is heading to much of the valley is fairly quiet right now. and you'll see the lightning off in the distance and we do have a chance for storms not just this morning but again this afternoon. i'll break down the hour-by- hour planner in just a few minutes. not doing too bad on i-10 for folks headed in from the west valley. it's going to take you to the 17. taking a look at the big picture, a small batch of

the stack. and let's give you a look at the adot camera. the right lanes are blocked near thomas. and this is all because of a crash. you'll see a little bit of slowing. and i'm going to send things over to chris now. >> let's go deeper as we expand our coverage. the search is happening for driver who hit somebody there and then took off from the scene. and we've just learned that person has died. and justin pazera is live with the details. justin, what do we know about the person who fled from the scene? >> reporter: yeah, hey, chris, you can see that the exit to northbound 17 is blocked. you can see the cars coming down. they are being forced to take a service road. we can show you where this accident actually happened. there's a stranded driver right off the entrance to i-17. part of the car is actually on

trying to figure out what was wrong with it. and the driver of another vehicle hit and killed the driver of that stranded vehicle. so right now i'm expecting actually dps came and want to give us an update. they need our help to get the word out about the driver that's on the loose. i'm going to toss it back to you. they want to talk to us really quick. >> thank you for that. one valley action after he says his daughter was cyber bullied. >> she was attacked at school and someone caught the whole thing on video. what happened here? >> reporter: this dad says that his daughter was being attacked online. and that turned into a physical attack right here on school grounds. and now he's looking for answers. the video you're about to see

[bleep [ >> that's video from marcus heinz, his freshman daughter was being cyber bullied and she decided to confront the students who were doing this and it did not go well. fists started flying. and the girl was shoved to the ground. and at one point she was struggling to breathe. she's on moving at one point. and the worst part about it is the dad says it turned into a pile on. he's reached out to police. and he tells us he's going to be pressing charges against these students. ahead at 5:30. more information and we'll take another look at the video from the very beginning and tell you

that's coming up at 5:30. a motorcyclist is in bad shape after a crash in scottsdale. this happened near hayden and indian bend. a car and a motorcycle collided and the motorcyclist is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. no word on what caused the accident but it shut down traffic for several hours. and we're learning about a shooting that happened at desert all of it started with a robbery attempt in the parking lot. the two men met to complete a sale they started online when the buyer tried to rob the seller the victim fired shots at him. the suspect took off on a red motorcycle. he is still on the run. and he may have a gunshot wound. the victim was not hit by any bullets and had a minor injury from the struggle. anyone with information should call silent witness.

night ends with gunfire. a man in his 30s is now in the hospital after a shooting at a house party over the weekend. we hear he's going to be okay. party goers got in an argument. and five shots in all fired. and officers are looking for the shooter this morning. a house fire and one of the dogs did not make it out. a man and a woman were home at the time. and the woman ran out through the front and to escape through the back of the house. two dogs were able to get out and a third did not make it. mixed messages hours ahead of a cease fire that's supposed to begin today. there's verbal backing by president bashar al-assad's government. it allows the syrian government

customers currently without power. this is when they expect the power to be restored -- an hour and 25 minutes. i don't know if this is storm related. a circuit breaker was tripped. iris hermosillo is always on top of this. >> we had strong storms over fountain hills and the beeline highway. and those are moving off to the northeast tortilla flats. a lot of lightning with the storms and that could have caused issues with the area. we have more than 900 lightning strikes. everything is pushing away from the valley. so to the northeast. you'll notice the lightning as you step outside, especially if you're driving eastbound this morning. the lightning and the storms over the tortilla flat area

impacting parts of the beeline highway. and you can see the cluster of storms and much of that producing a lot of lightning as it tracks to the northeast. christopher creek seeing the storms. and if this holds together it's going to move into cover next. i'm tracking showers over lake pleasant and a few showers near tonopah. the storm chances in the forecast in the phoenix metro. a 10% chance for hours, 87 degrees now. and it's going to be a bit of a humid day as we warm to near 100 degrees this afternoon. and we have more storm chances to talk for later. i'll break that down in a few minutes. in the valley, the traffic is relatively light. eight minutes -- this is eastbound from the 17 to the 51. and the only slow spot is i-17

early this morning, a fire at a florida mosque attended by the orlando nightclub shooter. fire investigators saying this fire was set deliberately. surveillance video shows a person approaching followed by a flash. the mosque served as a place of worship for the omar mateen, the person who opened fire on june 12th in the rampage left 49 people dead and 53 others wounded. and it was also where a syrian suicide bomber worshiped as well. >> from florida to bangladesh. the death toll at a factory has risen to 31. look at the damage. six bodies were recovered last night. and two were found overnight as firefighters are clearing the debris. eight workers are missing.

explosion and still it's smoldering. and they are sifting through the rubble. the navajo nation's opposition to the death penalty is in the spotlight. a mother demanding justice after her 11-year-old daughter was abducted and killed in ship rock. she demands the tribe allow the death penalty. a navajo man lured her into his van in may. and her body was day. the navajo nation president supports the mandate which allows tribes to decide. each marking a life lost on 9/11. each flag has a name on it honoring the victims individually. to remember all of those lives.

towers when the towers came down. and so it doesn't get any easier. >> this is the 13th year of the healing fields display. the flags will be removed beginning at 6:00 this morning. a group of phoenix police officers are honoring those who lost their lives in the line of duty. the 300-mile bike ride from d.c. to new york. the phoenix officers are honoring david glasser who was killed in may. >> if we can get out here and give these families an opportunity to have some sort of an experience, you know, maybe that put as smile on their face. can >> six other officers are there right now. jerry more ran is also taking

working. occasionally, we get some of the flashes of light because we're tracking storms producing a lot of lightning over the superstitions. now i'm not seeing anything. you'll see a bit of a lightning show across the east valley this morning. the strongest storms have lifted over the higher terrain just northeast of the phoenix metro. and you'll see that lightning from the valley as you look off to the east. we've got one pocket over there. and right over roosevelt lake. another area of strong storms producing a lot of lightning through the payson and moving east into young and eventually that will hold together and move up. it's going to come close. and this is the early heads up. all of this lightning is heading your way. indoors is the best place to be if you can until the storms move through. across much of the phoenix metro, things are quiet.

shower and another area of light rain over tonopah. and we have the chances for storms in the phoenix metro as we go through the early morning. that chance at 10%. it's something to keep in mind and as soon as i start to see anything developing in the valley, i'll be sure to let you know. a bit of a lull in the activity before more storm chances get into this afternoon and early evening with the storm chances 6:00. we could see more storms fire up across the southeast valley. the best potential will be in spots to the southeast. temperature-wise, 87 degrees right now. and much of the day in the 90s. and up to 99 degrees by 3:00 to 4:00. and we top out at 100 this afternoon. but it will be a brief 100 degrees before the temperatures start to trend down again.

and then temperatures start to drop and we're in the upper 90s tomorrow. and we'll stay in the mid- to upper 90s pretty much through the end of the week as we begin to dry out through wednesday. the right lanes of i-17 are still blocked off. this is near thomas because of this deadly crash. and things are definitely starting to slow down. you'll see a lot of buildup as you're traveling northbound on the 17. the entrance ramp at thomas also closed off. indian school is going to be the best entrance ramp. let's switch to the traffic map. the rest of the valley remains quiet. just an 11 minute desert drive time. no problem spots. and the rest of the east valley is quiet and i'll give you a closer look in a couple of minutes. tesla is taking steps to

and we're tracking the storms over the higher terrain's and northeast of the valley. still moving across parts of the beeline highway. it's an area that i'm watching very closely. again, dangerous lightning over the higher terrain northeast of the phoenix metro. >> the temperature at 87 degrees. the sun is not up yet. a 10% chance for storms in the phoenix metro. and then we have a chance for more storms high of 100 degrees. we'll talk more about the storm chances and the lower temperatures in the 7-day forecast. >> all right, iris. let's get to breaking news i want to update you on i should say. coming from nau overnight, students were panicked and scared and people were calling the newsroom asking for information as to what was happening. an alert went out of an

asking people to avoid the area of the knowles parking garage. and asking people to take cover. and then it said details to follow. and then an hour later. text messages saying that law enforcement was on the scene and the situation was all clear. that was the confirmation from the university. some reported a suicidal person in the garage. but in the all there's a lot of information circulating. brand new information on a deadly crash as we bring it to the valley. this is the i-17. a person on the roadway hit and killed by the driver and he kept on going. you're talking a good samaritan involved here? >> reporter: such a sad story, chris. let me step out of the way to

a very active investigation. and i want to focus on that car there, you see the suv to the side of the road. they were trying to position their vehicle to jump another car when that good samaritan was hit and killed. there were other drivers on i- 17 that saw what happened. audio good samaritan stopped and they were doing chest compressions and cpr trying to revive the good samaritan that was hi the good samaritan that was killed, possibly 19, 20 years old. the driver who did this took off down i-17. the last we know that driver of a chevy pickup truck got off on bethany home road. dps said they are trying to locate the vehicle and phoenix police are looking for it. we knowed the a custom tailgate. if you see that vehicle, it

to the bumper, possibly to the window and the mirror. if you see that vehicle, call police immediately. they want to talk to that driver. and northbound i-17 some of the lanes are restrictedded. you're not going to be able to get on at thomas because they have the lane shut down. it's expected to be shut down for quite some time as dps is just getting started. from your traffic alert and breaking news we need the northeast valley. if we could take state route 87 in say. it's shut down right now. flares in the road at state route 87 at shea. maricopa county sheriff's office telling us power lines with down in the roadway. this is near fountain hills. this could be storm related. there's a lot of lightning

>> i get home and there's shots going off. and once they stopped i came outside and saw kids running. they're just running, you know. >> the two teens are in serious but stable condition. police detained the driver of the white suv but the search is on for the black mercedes sedan and the people inside. if you have information that can lead to an police. a woman is in serious condition after a bad crack at queen creek. it's already dealing with heavy construction. a woman ran the red light and slammed into another driver. deputies believe speed was a factor. is it becoming a new trend, more criminals getting a break in the state?

moving right over payson and into young now. over the terrain in gila county. and we do have isolated pop-ups west of the valley, also south of the valley early this morning. and the lightning show just to the northeast. those stronger storms moving into young. and this is a line of storms producing stronger winds and also the very dangerous lightning. it's tracking to the east, northeast. so heading up and it's clip by hey bert. this is an -- clay springs if you live in that area, even snowflake, you are in the path of the storms heading your way. and we have more pop-ups behind there. around mormon lake seeing lightning. and these are scattered pop-ups west of the main line. and most of us waking up to quiet conditions, and a few spotty showers out near cave creek. and also just west of the loop 303.

showers or another area of showers southwest of wickenburg this morning. chances for storms are at 10% early this morning for the phoenix metro. after 8:00 we clear out the storm chances for a few hours, and it won't be until 1:00 that we bring the storm chances back up. between 4:00 and 6:00 we have a 20% chance for a few storms in the phoenix metro. temperatures will make it in the upper 90s i'll show you what the storm chances look like on future cast in just a few minutes. and we have quite a few spots with heavy slowing on i- 17 especially. let's give you a closer look. we have two crashes, i-17 southbound at indian school and you're slow back to bethany home road. and northbound 17 you're seeing the right lanes blocked and a lot of heavy slowing there as well. also loop 202 eastbound is

terrain. and they're picking up speed too. moving there young, up to heber. and continuing to push's. snowflake in the path of the strong storms. producing a lot of lightning. we're over 1400 lightning strikes with some of these storms as they continue to push off to the east. this is heading to live in heber or sib cue. and another area of rain south of wickenburg will up by wickenburg as it tracks to the northeast. across the phoenix metro. not a lot of action but i'm seeing a pop-up shower southeast of sun city. know that we do have a chance for a few spotty storms in the valley this morning with a chance for more storms this afternoon. it's 87 now.

midmorning. 94 by noon. and then today's high up to 100 which we should hit by 3:00. and down to 99 by 4:00. we're tracking a storm system that's gradually approaching from the west. and today we'll see an elevated chance for storms. once we go into the afternoon and evening. best potential overall will be across the southeast valley. by tomorrow, just a stray shower or a and notice the temperatures. they'll be lower all week long as we bring up the storm chances today and tomorrow. again, near 100 and lower temperatures thus the rest of the week. and i have an update on a traffic alert that chris has been details. state route 87 just reopened. you're taking a look at live pictures. they had to shut it down because of downed power lines. sounds like they were able to clear those.

options when it shuts down. you can use that portion of the road again. let's give you a look at the freeways. slow on the 10 and the 17 because of crashes. we have a rollover crash i-10 eastbound at salt river bridge and it's slow on i-17, around the durango curve is where the slowing begins. loop 202 eastbound will be the best route. take the 10 and continue on the 202. and then i-17 is slow in both directions because of a couple this one -- they may have just cleared it. it was blocking the right lane. i-17 southbound at indian school. you're slow before glendale and another crash at thomas that's slowing traffic down. we'll give you a look at the delays in a couple of minutes. a valley sports team is taking today to focus on the national anthem. ahead in the 6:00 hour,

asphalt and that's what you're seeing spilled all over the freeway. i think this is going to take quite some time to get leaned up. only the right lane and the hov lane are getting by. let's give you a look at how to get around this. the smart route is loop 202 eastbound. i-10 is slow all the way back to the ministack. you're seeing the normal slow and go on the 10. and i-17 -- because this is you're seeing it back up to the durango curve or so. it could take some time for that to recover. and i-17 is super slow. we've had a couple crashes there. back here at the abc15 live desk, a weather alert. this is state route 87 and shea in the fountain hills area.
