off the i-17 and camelback. >> katie conner has the latest. >> reporter: for one of the injured officers, this was his first day on the job hitting the streets solo. early this morning he was standing outside this qt, investigating with two officers when the driver of a maroon car drove right at them. one of the officers got pinned between the car and the store. the driver got with the third officer until help arrived. detectives are trying to figure out a motive. >> the video shows the suspect watching the officers, moving his car a couple of spots in the parking lot. and ultimately running them down. >> reporter: the injured officers were rushed to saint joe's hospital. we are told that one has been released. the other two are still being treated for serious injuries. right now the name of the

released. katie conner, abc15 news. >> it's shaping up to be a good tuesday. >> we keep saying nice, iris, nice. >> clouds moving in and temperatures slow to warm. feeling good once you step outside. we have the blanket of clouds across the valley. they've been moving in and they'll stick around through the afternoon. not seeing any rain in the valley and the chances are there that we could get a shower or a storm as we go into the afternoon. the chance is there, especially as we and through the early evening. through about 7:00 that 10% chance in the forecast. otherwise, plan on the clouds sticking around. and temperature-wise, we're seeing 89 degrees right now. it's humid and look at the warmup. we'll make it to the 90s in the next couple of hours. today's high, 98 which i expect we'll hit around 3:00. and the temperature starts to trend down.

i'll show you who in the valley has the best potential for storms. i'll show you how much stronger the winds get as we go into the afternoon. a family of four waking up to flames in the apartment. and the scary thing is that they think someone threw something on the apartment balcony and started the whole thing. here's a look inside the apartment at 59th avenue and mcdowell. i spoke with a man who saw th orange glow. he knew that no one was running out of the apartment. they were running to get every fire extinguisher around there until the phoenix fire department got there. the damage is unreal. and everyone living there is okay. >> like my bed -- picture is gone. there's a lot of stuff i can't replace. but it's -- i have the memory. >> reporter: yeah.

good. >> the fire investigators are looking into what sparked the fire. we know it started on the second floor balcony. the entire second floor is damaged. you might have gotten stuck in the backup created by a couple of serious crashes. reems road is back open. a truck traveling south collided with a car near waddell and burst into flames. two people were inside and the driver died on scene. a passenger in the car and the driver of the truck are both in serious condition. and impaired. another crash this morning, this one involving a car and a bicyclist at 55th avenue and mcdowell. no word on the extent of the injuries there. but the bicyclist was conscious as he was being taken to a nearby hospital. happening now. search and rescue teams gearing up to look for a missing tour guide at the grand canyon. the 34-year-old failed to return to camp after a trip

sunday. the national parks service got a satellite call from members of the group he was with yesterday. crews were not able to search yesterday because of the high winds. they could not fly to that location. election day is eight weeks away and with so many races having razor thin margins, every vote counts. nick ciletti is taking action on what you need to know before heading to the polls. >> reporter: the deadline to register is less than a away. early voting starts shortly thereafter. first there's a few dates and deadlines you have to know about. the exact registration deadline is october 10th. keep that in mind. and after that, early voting starting october 12th and goes until november 4th. there's quite a few days for people to go ahead and early vote. and if you wanted to request an early ballot through the mail, you have until friday, october 29th. the general election is set for

an abc15 update on arizona's primary. the steps to initiate a recount begin today. the congressional race in district 5, for now, christine jones is trailing by just 16 votes. election day will be here before we know it. and hillary clinton and donald trump are in a virtual head to head race in four key states. georgia, new arizona, and nevada. and trump gets 42% of the vote. and clinton, 41%. our state is traditionally a red state. and new hampshire is traditionally blue. it could be a very interesting outcome come november. let's talk a little bit about the pneumonia diagnosis that's dominated the new cycle. what's the latest today? >> bill clinton and hillary

northeast. and now we're seeing more activity west of heber, and moving to the northeast as well. and west of strawberry too. another storm tracking to the northeast towards happy jack. notice there's quite a bit of red in the storms and they are producing pockets of heavier rain. if you're in happy jack, it's going to be a bit of a downpour. and we have dangerous lightning with it too. and watch for strong winds as the storms roll through. again, they are tracking northeast, moving away phoenix metro. and just because the valley is quiet now doesn't mean we're in the clear. we have a chance for storms today. we're tracking an area of low pressure out to the west. that area of low pressure was what brought us the boost in moisture initially yesterday. it's reason we saw storms across the east valley. we're still pulling in the moisture and you can see it on the water vapor imagery. there's also drier air that's

so today with the moisture still in place. our storm chances are still in play. once the drier air moves in tomorrow. we'll start to clear out the storm chances and bring back the abundant sunshine. still watch for the storms on the mogollon rim. that's the best potential for storms today. and you'll see storms firing up over the higher terrain to the east. we'll have to watch conditions in the valley. we could see a few storms pop up especially if you live on the north valley foothills and the east valley. we could see storms popping up here this afternoon that will quickly move to the northeast. but we'll be watching for the potential. any storms that get going will have the potential of bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and that patchy blowing dust is certainly a possibility through the afternoon. watch what happens once we get to the 9:00 hour. we'll actually see the skies clearing and it's mainly an

sunny skies in the valley. a slight chance of storms in areas to the east. and much of the state will begin the process of drying out as we bring in the drier air. a 10% chance for storms in the valley. and a 40% in the higher terrain. notice that 10% chance lingers for the high country or back. something else the winds, right now breezy between five and 15 miles per hour in the valley. some gusts upwards of 25 miles per hour already at phoenix sky harbor. i'll show you how much stronger they'll be, where the wind alerts are and we have to talk the cooler temperatures the rest of the week in just a few minutes. here they are. the two men arrested during the premiere of dancing with the stars. this story blowing up on

police in flagstaff are looking for the person behind three separate fires. they were found in the brendan homeless neighborhood. the blazes were small and put out before they got out of happened. but it's been an ongoing problem. call police if you see anything suspicious in that area. and capturing a suspicious person moments after a driver's windshield was shattered on the u.s. 60 in mesa. this video from morning shows the man putting on his shoes, shirt, and then walking off the overpass. the driver was not hurt. mesa police say he's a 14-year- old. they contacted him about a curfew violation. and they don't know if the rock was thrown or kicked up by a vehicle.

said his life was in jeopardy. men with guns were chasing him and he did not have anywhere else to go. a trial begins for the man accused of shooting george zimmerman. a road rage incident in 2015. zimmerman told police that the man drove up behind his truck and fired, leaving a bullet hole in three years ago. zimmerman was acquitted in the deadly shooting of trayvon martin. no parents want to see that, a school bus in flames and there were students on the bus. this was all captured on officer's dash cam. thankfully, the kids were out. the bus driver evacuated all 20 students and nobody was hurt. officials believe the fire was started after a problem with

keeping an eye on wall street. the dow is down 251 points at 18,073. wells fargo is announcing big changes as a result of the scandal. the sales goals have been cut for employees. wells fargo agreed to pay fines over claims opened unauthorized deposits and credit card accounts to hit sales targets and get bonuses. prices are going down at the grocery store. over the past eight months and that includes the cost of milk and eggs. according to the bureau of labor statistics, the u.s. has been producing and stockpiling food. and that's the major reason behind the price drops.

know. we're always keeping an eye out for scams and there's a new one. surprise police say scammers are calling as aps agents, threatening to shut off power if you don't call a toll free hotline. of course, scammers run the hotline. aps posts all valid numbers on your actual bill. you know how you drop food on the ground and say five second rule. there's and food is contaminated right as it hits the floor. and the longer it's there it means more bacterial transfer. the high moisture content foods got the most contamination -- like watermelon. >> who picks up watermelon off the floor. >> the five second rule is not scientific. pushing a card and selling

despite the cloud cover. we are tracking the storms from payson to strawberry to happy jack and east of there as well near heber seeing a few of the storms. and another area of storms from sedona and that's moving to the northeast. all of the storms are tracking southwest to the northeast. so this batch will move up to near two guns across i-40. and this storm just northeast of sedona is going to bypass flagstaff. some of the storms are producing brief heavy downpours and possibly gusty winds. nothing in the valley as of yet. but over the next few hours through the early evening. watch for a few pop-up storms. chances are not that high but at 10%. best potential east valley and the north valley foothills is where we have to keep an eye on things. and again i mentioned the breezes.

waving around. the winds kicking up through the morning. right now sustained in the valley between 10 and 20 miles per hour in most spots. and we have gusts as high as 26 miles per hour at phoenix sky harbor. and as we go through the afternoon, the winds will continue to increase in the valley. and they'll be stronger up north. so far, the strongest winds in spots like winslow and kingman. winds sustained between 25 and 30 miles per hour. bull head city, them too. the gusts upwards of 35 miles per hour in kingman. and over 35 in winslow. breezy to windy pretty much across the state. and it's because of the storm system approaching the state from the west. we'll keep the storm chances in play today as well. the storm system will bypass us to the north. tomorrow, the winds lighten up and we start to pull in drier air. that will clear out the storm

tan color for yavapai county, northern and northwest arizona. page, flagstaff, and kingman. and with the dry conditions up to the northwest. we have a red flag warning on the upper colorado river valley through this evening. so be on alert. heightened fire conditions in the area because of the winds. strongest winds in northern arizona will gust as high as 45 miles per hour. and in the valley, our gusts as high as 30 miles per hour. it's going windy this afternoon. temperature-wise, sitting at 89 degrees. and we'll warm to 93 by noon. today's high, 98. and then the temperatures start to trend down again. temperatures today will be lower than yesterday. and below average, mid- to upper 90s across the valley. 98 for a high today in phoenix. and a quick peek at the 7-day forecast. as we start to dry out.
