now, we're learning more about his criminal past. let's get to the top story. if you are just joining us, there was a deadly police shooting early this morning, and this will have an impact on traffic because a portion of the valley freeway is shut down and will likely be that way for several hours. justin pazera live near it is i- 17 split interchange and the shadows of sky harbor. justin, let's talk about the officers and layout what happened here. update from phoenix police and those officers are okay, and let's give you a look at the screen. sorry. i'm in the street, and i thought someone was coming towards us. this is where the officer- involved shooting happened. let's backtrack it for you. policesay this started at 64th and avondale in a home invasion. but the video you're looking at, this is around seventh

five people involved in this home invasion and police were able to catch up to 4 of them. they followed one suspect to 7th and broadway. and you have to understand that to police and they were thinking fast because they put spike strips behind his car when it was parked. the tires were quickly deflated. this is where he wrecked. there was a with a few officers and the suspect pulled out a gun, and that's when police officers opened fire. e pio just got on scene, and we are expecting another update here in a few minutes. thankfully, chris, no officers were injured in this. but the suspect is dead here at i-17 and the i-10 interchange. >> justin, i know you are sorting this out with the crime scene tape behind you, and i

morning. down in the 60s to 70s valley wide, and phoenix sky harbor dropping a degree at the top of the hour, down to 74. here is the warm up. we won't make it into the 90s until noon and today's high, 98. we'll look ahead to the weekend in a few minutes. it doesn't matter how many times you see the video right here. the shock doesn't wear off. we are happy to report that both of the officers that were injured in th are home recovering this morning and let's turn to the guy accused of running him down. marc payne's criminal record reads like deja vu. he was stopped in a traffic stop nearly 20 years ago and he punched and kicked officers. he only served one year of a two-year probation sentence because of good behavior, and we're waiting for charges to be

this week. >> every time you see the video, it sends chills down your spine, danielle. more than 1 type of shot at a phoenix bar, men opening fire near 16th and bethany home road last month, and they are now under arrest. investigators are saying it was nathaniel mitchell's alleged get away driver who ratted them out. he claims that the two were upset when they denied at the bar and opened fire in the parking lot. two men hit by the gunfire are okay. 43rd and glendale just south of the location, i was on the scene here as early this morning, officers responded to a shooting there. this morning, we have learned that one man was shot and apparently he will survive his injuries. the investigation unfolding, a

conditions as we step outside and dew points in the 30s so that drier air dominants our forecast today. 74 is the current temperature and here's how your day shapes up. nothing but clear skies. a nice and cool start to the day. we'll keep the 70s until 8:00, and then 90s, so enjoy the outdoor activities before work today. a high up to 98 and puts couple degrees below the 30- year average. dry in the phoenix metro and also dry across the state. as you look at the futurecast, the storms off the east in new mexico. tomorrow, clear skies and as we head into the weekend, looking dry. and i am tracking changes for next week. when i say the monsoon is not

not at their usual classrooms. i'll tell you where they are going next. and we are on the scene of a 7-eleven. two people shot, 16 shots fired in this one. what police are looking for with this active investigation unfolding, dan and danielle. all right. 5:31 on this thursday. plenty to get to. let's get straight mallory. what's going on out there? a car fire at 17th. and it's hard to tell from this vantage point but it looks like the flames are out. up ahead are flashing lights. i can't tell exactly but it's blocking all lanes of traffic. it's super slow. traffic is getting by on the shoulder here. again, this is southbound 17 near 7th avenue and just past the durango curve.

telling folks to use i-10 eastbound at the stack because of this closure. i-17 southbound at i-10 westbound, the ramp is closed down. so for all the issues on i-17, that's your best option. back at the stacks, just head eastbound and it will get you around the delays and closures. besides those, not doing too bad valley wise, just delays on the 10 in the west valley. that's coming up. the most accurate forecast, temperatur a 60s to 70s across much of the valley, and that's where we'll stay in the early morning commute. a nice and cool, dry commute. open the moon roof if you can and roll down the windows, clear skies and light winds. and this afternoon, plenty of sunshine and light winds again today. we are going to get warm but only in the upper 90s by the time you are heading home. i'll break down the hour by hour planner and a look at the

chances return in a minute. 5:33 right now and if you are just waking up, breaking news and a traffic alert. a portion of a major freeway is closed right now. mallory is pinpointing how to get around it. but justin pazera is live after a deadly confrontation between police officers and a suspect running from them. this is going to be the i-17 in the southern portion of phoenix. justin, it's my understanding you were just briefed. what do you have? >> reporter: we have three scene that -- scenes that we are dealing with. this is the i-17 and i-10 interchange but started at 69th and avalon and just got clarification from police that two people were detained because of a home invasion and police were able to get one of the suspects but the second suspect, this guy right here, he made a run for it and ran to the area of 7th and broadway.

activity there, and police were quick thinking, and they put spike strips under his car in case he was going to take off. thankfully, they did that because the guy made a run for it, and he was driving on deflated tires and this is where he wrecked, driving a white suv and he weeked week -- wrecked it here and got out and ran through a field and that's when he at least pointed a handgun we believe that one officer fired his gun hitting and killing the suspect. now, as for the victims at the home invasion, phoenix police and i got the information from them, they are wanting in a separate investigation. so the three victims of the home invasion also questioned right now. live in phoenix, justin pazera, abc15. >> a tangled web of criminal activity and justin, mallory

around the closure involving the freeway. danielle? it's decision day for the county attorney in the case of three phoenix police officers run down by a man at the qt. bylaw, marc payne has to be formally charged within 48 hours of his first court appearance. if police have their way, he will be tried for attempted murder and aggravated assault. coming up in the next hour, more on payne's criminal history. police say the teenager accused of exposing himself to joggers. it started in june, and police say he was targeting women along the bridle path that runs along central between glendale and northern. the 17-year-old admit that does he drove up to unsuspecting women and mumbled something to get their attention and exposed himself. >> i thought after my incident happened that it was just a random thing and would he would

surgery and listed in critical condition, and i received an update that thtwo victims are expected to survivor. the only description is a 4- door white truck. i know it's vague. when i get more information, i'll let you know. but that's happening right now. also breaking overnight, a homeless man hit while crossing the street at 55th and mcdowell. the man's belongings are spread across the street. we don't have an update but i've reached out for more information, dan. plans against a desert discovery center. >> people on both sides are making their opinions known. the group called no ddc said they don't want to see a museum- style building. but supporters say it's so early in the process that plans are being worked out. >> give the people a vote in the november election or pull the plug until they guarantee a vote on it. >> premature to decide whether

hare@abc15.com, and one viewer asked katie raml to understand the difference between cardiac arrest and a heart attack. >> reporter: if you mix up the two terms you are not alone but they are not the same thing. a heart attack is when blood flow to the shrt blocked. in cardiac arrest, the heart stops beating. think of the heart like a house. in your house, vu electrical and plumbing. in cdi problem with the electric or the beat. in a heart attack, it's like a problem with the plumbing or circulation. in a heart attack, the purpose is awake and their heartbeating. in cardiac a arrest, their heart is not beating and they are not awake. a heart attack, the symptom can persist for hours or weeks before the attack and in cardiac arrest t occurs suddenly. in a heart attack, they need 911.

at 4:00 and we're at 97 at 3:00 and mid-90s by 6:00 and upper 80s by 9:00 this evening and nothing but clear skies in the valley forecast and you can see futurecast will show mostly clear skies across the state. the showers out east in new mexico could clip the area but dry tomorrow and sunny as we kickoff saturday. so if you have been waiting to get your car washed, be a good couple days to do it. a dry stretch through sunday, upper 90s today and tomorrow and triple digits back on saturday and sunday, and no rain chances through the weekend, and we'll stay dry across the state. storm chances are back in the 7- day forecast starting on monday with a slight chance monday through tuesday.
