thought he was going to get away but some storm employees weren't having any of it. and a wrong way driver going more than 90 miles per hour on the valley highway. we'll get to that in just a moment. let's talk weather first. close to perfect and perfect. >> it's considering fall starts next week. and we're feeling fall like temperatures. phoenix dropping another couple of degrees. the latest, you know that temperatures have dropped across the valley. and we're seeing a whole lot of 60s out there. a pleasant start and a nice drive to work. by lunchtime. maybe you've got errands to run. and we'll be inching into the low 90s. it's going to be a dry heat. a high of 98 puts us below average. we'll talk about when the triple-digits make a comeback.

crashes to deal with blocking the traffic. your desert drive time on i 17 is 16 minutes and this is southbound from loop 101. we have a crash south of that area. let's give you a look from the a dot camera. this is i 17. on the frontage road there's a crash. it could be blocking some traffic on the frontage road. i'll get more in of minutes. scary moments on the loop 202. just within the past 35 or 45 minutes a wrongway driver was flying down the freeway, going 90 plus. that driver is now off the freeway and in handcuffs. i've been following your tweets and listening to this. what's the latest? >> reporter: so the very latest

in the last minute or so. the tow truck is here trying to take the vehicle away to people can get on with their day. and the driver will face multiple endangerment counts. the driver was going the wrong way as you mentioned. 911 calls started about 4 a.m. this car going eastbound in the westbound lanes at 90 miles per hour at this car passed dps troopers and some of my colleagues going to the wrong way. this car finally corrected and headed westbound before he exited. and when they finally pulled this car over, the chopper caught them trying to dupe troopers. >> at this time of day, it is a good idea to be very cautious when you're driving, especially

the lanes start to get heavy with the volume of traffic and sometimes that can be difficult. >> so you're hearing dps troopers talking about what you should do and the precautions you should take if you see someone doing this. but these -- this passenger and the driver tried to switch seats when they pulled over. and dps interviewing the passenger. they might let him go. but the driver -- caught the real driver they handcuffed him and took him away. and he'll be facing multiple endangerment counts. the car needs to be towed and as soon as it is, dps will clear the area out so people can get on the way. amazing that nobody was hurt. the quick actions of dps saving a lot of people.

this. it hits home for us. this is justin pazera our colleague tweet thanksgiving out. saying thank you, adot for the heads up on the wrongway driver. seconds after we read the sign, the car came at us head on. >> thankfully, everyone is okay this morning. >> not the case in this horrific aftermath. twisted metal in the street near richfield and peoria. we saw the images from the crash. what do investigators say happened? >> reporter: they're saying the driver intentionally caused this crash in an attempt to commit suicide, but unfortunately for him, that didn't work and now someone else -- an innocent woman is dead and the family is having a difficult time understanding

near peoria and litchfield. her parents are struggling to even see his face. >> i saw him on the news this morning twice, three times, i'm like i just want to strangle you. you took away i hop you rot in jail. >> margie was recently divorced and those who knew her say they hope the family can rally together, especially for the two sons. johnson is being held on a $250,000 bond facing second- degree murder charges and aggravated assault. and coming up at 5:30. we hear what his lawyer has to say about that.

on twitter, tempe police tweeting out a thank you to community members. it says thank you for helping us identify this woman. accused in a hit-and-run. this woman they say that she ran a red light wednesday afternoon and crashed into another car near the u.s. 60 ramp. they say she had marijuana and drug paraphernalia with her. thank you from tempe time off and no pay -- that's another story. that's the wrong video. honey well is issuing furloughs to its people. we have found this approach helpful to control costs and retain our people. this move comes after additional job cuts earlier in the year. he was becoming a regular

and police say the only thing one robber was looking to feed was a drug addiction until a group of employees took action to take him down. he had already robbed two subway shops and the bus stop -- he pretended to have a gun to get some cash and they could tell he didn't have a solid plan. they went after him. >> my adrenaline was pumping. you're not getting away on bus. we don't do that to get our money. it's not right. >> the group followed until the cops could take over. he had money in a bag and notes naming other restaurants nearby. do you think your hoa is out of control. how you can stand up to them and win. a major traffic backup. look at the lights. the scary scene that had

lunchtime. the triple-digits are back in the forecast as we head into the weekend but not bad. it's going to be dry. we'll make it to 100 tomorrow. the morning temperatures still comfortable. i'll show you when the storm chances return in just a few minutes. your freeways are delay free and that includes i-10 in the west valley. it's p and 67th but no delays. we have a couple of crashes off the loop 303. happy valley parkway. look out for that. and have a look at the crash i told you from on the frontage road. i have been able to see traffic go by. i don't think it's impacting traffic. i 17 southbound off 19th avenue is where you'll see that. we'll give you a look at the closures in our next traffic

across the state as we look at satellite, clouds, and radar. drier air over the state. you felt it yesterday and today. eventually, we will start to bring in moisture as we see a storm system develop to the south. there's a possibility that by early next week, we cod tap into tropical moisture. we could tap into some of the moisture, bringing rain chances back to early next week. wanted to give you an early heads up. know that by early next week, the storm chances do kick up. a 10 to 20% chance for storms in the phoenix metro through wednesday, and it's going to feel more humid going into early next week. today not going to be feeling humid at all. in the upper 90s by the afternoon. right now we're in the 60s and

and then the low 90s. 96 by 2:00. and today's high, 98 degrees. sunny skies, warm temperatures today. going into the weekend we do bring back the triple-digits. saturday and sunday we're in the hundreds. and monday the hundreds stick around. the morning temperatures still very comfortable. if you want to go for a walk tomorrow morning, it should feel pretty good. we'll drop into the 60s and 70s. and maybe check out sales. a little warmer and once we get to next week. the moisture increases, and the storm chances go up and that will drop temperatures into the 90s by the middle of next week. i'll show you the uv index. in the east valley it's quiet and we have a freeway closure happening this weekends to look out for.

a valley veteran is taking his love of bouldering to new heights. he served in the army, spent full-time in iraq, and we went to chaparral high school together. he talked about how bouldering helped him cope with army life. he's now sharing that passion through the black bouldering gym. the grand opening is tomorrow 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. we have the address on the bottom of the screen. they'll have giveaways, live music, food. and this is his way of -- americans will spend $720 billion at restaurants this year. that's billion with a b. 70,000

accurate forecast and the desert drive times. but first a scary situation on the roads. what's the latest? >> this is something else. you have a person going 90 miles per hour the wrong way on the loop 202 this morning. it happened just about an hour and a half ago. and the suspect is in custody. allison rodriguez has been reporting on us. the driver was finally stopped by an amazing team effort, really, allison. >> reporter: yeah, it was a team effort. we're talking about arizona dps and phoenix police. and the latest was seconds ago. less than a minute ago, the tow truck was leaving that had the vehicle. and it took the car away. ten minutes ago this scene very active and now that the car is gone. some of the troopers will be leaving any second now. ten minutes ago. still very active out here. dps started getting the 911

about a wrongway driver. this car going eastbound in the westbound lanes at 90 miles per hour, just whipping past there. this car passed troopers and some of our own colleagues. the car finally did a u-turn on the 202 and was going the right way. that's when they finally got off and exited. when the driver pulled over, he and the pass one over on troopers. >> using the continuer from the phoenix police department was an amazing asset today, and to be honest with you we may not have been able to effectively contact this driver. >> reporter: right, so dps telling us the chopper was the one that saw the passenger and the driver switch seats. when they finally pulled over

all of that -- teaming with activity. dps took the driver away. and the passenger went walking that way. we were able to catch up with him. and we'll tell you what he told me about the incident. >> you mentioned how scary. i want to give a quick shoutout to adot. they put up the signage alerting everyone. and justin pazera tweeting out he changed lanes and when did that car passed him. that could have been a bad collision. let's stick with the theme of the roads. let's check in with our expert, mallory moor. >> the freeway is not doing too bad. they start around 83rd and the drive time is 17-minutes and this is from the 1051 until you hit the 17.

megan thompson is live near where the crash took place. and we had a chance to talk with that woman's parents and forgiveness at this point is not an option for them. >> reporter: that's exactly right and that's understandable. the other driver came barreling through the intersection in his truck, running a red light. and slamming into the other drivers. he was trying to kill himself and he failed. he killed one injured two others. keith johnson -- newly released documents say he was in a depressed mood. his lawyer says there are no words to describe what johnson is feeling. but the victim's parents are furious that this man took their daughter's life. >> he took her life and he should have gone out and hit a

>> a memorial is now up here for margie. she leaves behind two children, two young boys, just a devastating story. >> so many hearts going out to the family this morning. thank you, megan for telling the story. i want to update you on this situation. this is a power pole struck by a driver. actually taking out a large transformer. the power pole is 59th avenue. and at one point, 1200 plus customers without power. that's been revised to 102. and a person hit by a car at 48th street and mcdowell. you can see the person's shoes and cigarettes. don't know the person's condition or if the driver was cited. finally an end here.

1070 our state's controversial immigration law. it is now over. >> bottom line is there's no racial profiling and no stops that detain people unnecessarily just to check their immigration status. >> the attorney general was a vital part in getting the settlement to go through. other pieces include after police pull someone over, officers can look into the immigration status if they don't have an i.d. but police person on the roadside any longer than necessary to write a traffic ticket. >> and former governor jan brewer sharing her thoughts. >> she made it clear that she thought the decision was a good one. take a look at this lengthy statement on facebook. she points out that when she signed the bill, she meant to make it a collaborative effort with the federal government.

crossover crash. i saw damage to the jersey wall. and obviously, we have a serious situation unfolding here. u.s. 60 and alma school is the location here. mallory, what are you seeing? >> u.s. 60 eastbound is where you'll see this. adot just tweeting that a dump truck fire is blocking all of the lanes except for the hov lane. typically, the lighter side if and gilbert. the westbound side is slowing as well. you'll have to avoid the area. as you can see, looks like they are showing damage to the guardrail. the 202 -- you can see a lot of damage to the median. just that massive fire burning

producer is telling me this does look like it may be a crossover crash with that damage in the center wall. my goodness, look at this right now. that might be a tanker truck there. some people are standing there as the flames are raging. the camera is moving around. i do not have control of the cameras. so we're at the mercy of adot. they're trying to get an of the traffic. >> and adot just tweeted this out. this is going to be a nightmare for commuters. do we have crews headed that way. once we get on the ground we can gather information. >> looked to me when we initially pulled this up before we got on the air. looks like there were multiple cars involved with that. and a lot of cars are using the

cooler temperatures, so if you want to go hiking, running, biking, it should be perfect for it. 60s to 70s across the valley. and officially waking up to 71 degrees. the clear skies and the sun comes up at 6:13 and we'll warm through the morning and make it to the mid-80s closer to 10:00. so you've got some time to enjoy the cooler start. we'll warm into the low 90s. sunny if you want to the patio. it's going to be dry. you don't have to worry about the humidity. today, 98 degrees. that puts us a degree above where we made it to yesterday. we're starting to warm a little bit. but we get warmer saturday and sunday. hundreds back in the forecast. and we'll be staying dry through the weekend. an early heads up if you want to get the car washed. by monday, the storm chances will be back.

recover. let's give you a look at the smart routes. the main fire and crash on the eastbound side. that's past the 101. the delays have not set in. it's very slow and it's going to be most of the morning. the smart routes. right now you could hop off and use baseline and southern. that can get you around it right now. but it's going to get much worse. loop option. if you're -- loop 202 red mountain will be the best option and it's going to get busy so head out early wherever you're trying to head out to. >> we'll try to keep you up to date with twitter. i know you're eating breakfast and getting the kids out the door. keep the phone handy and we'll keep you up to date.

and the clear skies sticking around. temperatures right now in phoenix down to 71 degrees. and we've got a lot of 60s across the valley. if you loved yesterday morning you'll love today. we're seeing a repeat of the cooler temperatures in the valley and across the state. and the humidity is pretty low as the dew points are in the mid-30s. it's going to be a dry day today. with below average high temperatures again. 30 year average is 100. we don't have any in sight in the valley. as we warm to 76 degrees by 8:00. we'll warm to 85 by 10:00. the 90s hold off until about lunchtime. and then we spend the afternoon in the 90s and we only reach a high of 98 degrees today. if you have happy hour plans by 5:00, the temperature is in the mid-90s and clear skies. and future cast keeps our skies clear across the state. and going into tomorrow,

by early next week we could get a boost in the moisture again. and that means storm chances are back in the forecast. triple-digits through the weekend. and then the storm chances kick up as we go to early next week with temperatures dropping back to the mid-90s. if you're heading to the cardinals game on sunday, i've got a forecast. and you can plan ahead for the tailgating. let's head back to the east valley. as you can see from the big map. the rest of the valley is just the delays on the 10. but the east valley. this is the spot to avoid on u.s. 60. tell your friends that you need to avoid the it right at alma school. the westbound side is very slow as well. baseline and southern will be the best options. loop 202 red mountain is also a good option.
