phoenix metro. as you step outside and make your way to work, plan on the dry roads, and i'll keep you posted but not expecting a major washout. temperatures in the 60s to low 70s and warming to the upper 80s and low 90s. and we do have a crash on i- 17 northbound right near northern dunlap. and it's partially blocking the you'll see slowing -- let's switch to the traffic map. most of the valley is quiet. and i-17 southbound is -- take i-10 eastbound on the 17 once you hit the stack take the eastbound side of i-10 to get to where you need to go. and chris has more details on the crash. let's talk about the i-17 shut down due to the deadly crash. and the victim was just changing a tire. nick ciletti is live on the

not mistaken. a heartbreaking scene just moments ago. >> reporter: we're not far from the scene. i'm standing in front of the dps substation because this is where dps took a suspected drunk driver after the crash. and we can confirm that the 17 is still shout down southbound at 7th street. the brand my video shows from the ground level what exactly the crash happened just before midnight. four people were driving southbound in an audi sedan. and they got a flat tire and pulled off to the shoulder. and a man got out to try toe change the tire. and a 61-year-old man in a pickup truck barreled into them as they were trying to fix the flat tire. three people were taken to the hospital with broken bones, and sadly, the driver did not make

find out when the freeway is going to open. count on us to give you the updated information as soon as we get it. nick ciletti, abc15. i'm katie conner live in maricopa where crime tape is blocking off a neighborhood. police say a man started shooting at officers. this happened around 8:45 p.m. when officers got here they exchanged fire with who eventually went in his home and went upstairs. the s.w.a.t. team sent in a robot to try to find the guy inside. he was found upstairs inside a closet and he passed away. they are trying to figure out if he died from a gunshot from

around. and most of us will stay dry this morning. for most, a dry drive into work. and a slight chance of a stray shower before storm chances kick in by this afternoon. temperatures are mostly in the 60s to 70s with light winds across the valley or light breezes rather between five and 15 miles per hour in the phoenix metro. and the winds continue to kick up thanks to an area of low pressure to the south. that will keep the winds around so today for the valley. instead of the stronger wind gusts we saw yesterday, occasional gusts near 25 miles per hour. and winds overall sustained between five and 15 miles per hour. and in southeastern arizona we had strong winds and dust and a little lighter today. storms fire up to the south. and we'll talk about when the storms could move in to the

and your desert drive time for the north valley drivers is six minutes on the 101 eastbound from 75th to the 17. and as you're taking the 17 southbound from the area you're good to go until the -- grant street slows from the closure at 7th street. let's give you a look at the delays. this is the camera at the durango curve. avoid this area. once you hit the stack, take i- 10 eastbound or state ro could be a good option. i-10 in the west valley next. >> reporter: construction on the 202 might have started but that's not stopping some native american tribes from sending a strong message to adot. do you think your hoa is working against you instead of with you? joe lets you know what you can do to help change that right

the fbis are going to be doing a 10-mile relay to desert vista high school. and i talked with the organizer and it's expected to be peaceful. they do not plan to block traffic. and it's interesting to point out that construction on the 202 has already started. >> it's been a long time coming, still a ways to go down the road for the the 202. breaking news coming in to the live desk at 5:17. is that -- a police situation in phoenix? our photographer is there on the scene. this is near the i-17 in dunlap. you see the fire presence and police officers and crime scene tape up. this is an active scene and an active investigation.

waiting on an update. we'll revisit that momentarily. a horrific crash in south los angeles leaves one person dead and two others in critical condition. officers say a driver slammed into a bus stop after getting hit by another car. a couple in their 70s and their daughter -- all three were hit and taken to the hospital and the husband died. the driver who caused the crash took off from now to a disgusting story from indiana. two children found dead, their mother arrested on murder charges. the seven and 6-year-old were found in a car matching the description of the alert outside the police station. detectives have not said why the children were abducted. much has been made about the issue of trust in this year's presidential race.

mogollon rim. and those pushing from east to west and not moving to the phoenix metro and light and spotty this morning. the other area i'm watching is down to the south around tucson. they're waking up to wet, stormy weather. if you have to travel on the 10, know that you could get caught under the scattered showers and thunderstorms. it does like they'll stay south of the and i'll keep watching them. at the very least spots like casa grande, eloy, have a chance of seeing the showers. for now, the phoenix metro is looking to stay clear of the storms until later today. just a 10% chance of a stray shower this morning. by this afternoon, we could see a few thunderstorms rolling in and the chances get higher. a 250% chance for storms this afternoon into the evening.

stick around for the next few days. today again we'll watch the showers and storms to the south. what could happen is those storms from this morning stay to the south. and then as we go into the afternoon, we see more storms down to the south. and those push towards the phoenix metro by late this afternoon and evening. keep the mobile app handy. there's the potential for storms today. a 20% chance in the forecast. and we're breezes as highs only make it to the low 90s. i'll break down the hour-by- hour temperature planner in a few minutes. the slow spot on the morning drive is i-17 southbound around the durango curve but the rest of the valley is light. that includes i-10 in the west valley. and this is eastbound on the 10 from 75th avenue to the ministack. on the 17 we have another

presidential debate. and first, will it get blustery and rainy today. iris, i got to tell you, it was rough yesterday afternoon. >> and the dust kicked up and today we'll feel more breezes and we could get another round of dust but thunderstorms could develop this afternoon. as you're getting ready to head out the door. desert doppler is all clear and dry for the morning commute. just a 10% chance of a stray and right now i'm not seeing anything. 73degrees now. and we'll get get more breezes and by this afternoon, a high of 91. i'll break down the forecast and show you when the storms could move in next. i-17 is shut down right now in the southbound direction at 7th street. you can see the crash in the distance and all the traffic having to get off the freeway. nick ciletti will have all the details on this crash in a couple of minutes.

the smart route. i would recommend once you hit the stack, take i-10 eastbound. or the 51 if you want to hop over there. the rest of the valley is not doing too bad but in the past couple of minutes, it's slowing down. starting at the live desk. when a quiet neighborhood is woken by gu a man with an ar-15 opened fire at them and shots were exchanged. that man is dead and we're taking you to the scene. katie conner is live. any officers injured? >> reporter: fortunately no officers were injured which is amazing because this guy fired several rounds. there are shell casings behind me. a couple houses down he was on his driveway where the white

was standing on his driveway and started shooting at officers. and those officers fired back. and the s.w.a.t. team was called in. >> they used the robot to take a look around and they discovered the individual deceased in an upstairs closet. >> reporter: now, it's not clear whether the suspect took his own life or whether he was hit in the the name of the suspect is not being released. detectives want to piece together what led up to the shootout. police were originally called out for a domestic violence call. fortunately, the family was able to escape. police had no previous contact with the suspect. they'll continue to gather evidence and right now we're trying to confirm if the

enforcement. reporting live in maricopa, katie conner, abc15. a deadly crash on the i-17 shutting it down. kind of a rough go in the morning commute. nick ciletti is live where the crash took place. what is it looking flake >> i just spoke with a trooper and they're hoping to reopen the freeway within the next 15 minutes so hopefully, all cleared out by the time the morning rush and they do have a suspect in custody that they say may have been under the influence at the time of the crash. let's get to brand new video this morning. i want to show you a shot from one of our adot cameras. you can see the flashing lights there. the accident happened just before midnight. four people were driving southbound on the 17 in an audi. they got a flat tire and pulled off to the shoulder.

time now is 5:44 and take a look. a rough ride for drivers on i- 17 this morning. you do not want to get stuck in this backup. i-17 southbound is closed from 7th street. i'm going to give you the smart routes and a couple of other crashes you could see around the valley this morning. i feel like we are treated differently than other people. and i don't like how we're treated color. it doesn't mean anything to me. >> the protesters filling the stands at the charlotte city council meeting demanding change. it began with dozens of people refusing to stand for the pledge of allegiance. protesters calling the city councilmembers incompetent. and a failure for the way the

delays are stretching further. so the 51 could also be a good option. take a look. this is indian school, kind of the beginning of the delays for i-17 drivers. the 51 could be a good option. we'll give you a look at the north valley drive in just a few minutes. a much different picture than yesterday when we kicked off the today. less cloud cover and more of a partly cloudy sky as we look out to the east, awaiting the sunrise. and the temperatures ar running cooler because we're seeing less cloud cover than yesterday. 73degrees now at phoenix sky harbor. i think for most of us it's going to be a dry drive to work. temperatures will gradually warm. we top out around 91 degrees just like yesterday. and temperatures still running below average through day. we'll keep the partly cloudy skies in the forecast.

we could see the storms move in. watching the storms to the south near tucson. they are moving slowly to the northwest. they could track along the i-10 but looks like they'll stay south of the valley. cry across the phoenix metro and the storms looking to face off this morning. and by the afternoon, the storms could move in. we'll see storms redevelop to the south and they'll track north moving in to the phoenix. scattered storms will be a possibility. and tomorrow to thursday our rain chances sticking around before we get drier air in here. be on the lookout for strong winds and possibly dust with any storms that develop to the south. we'll be watching for that again today. pockets of heavy rain not out of the question with any storms that move in. not everybody is going to get storms but there's the
