it could be the biggest evacuation ever. >> reporter: matthew potentially the worst storm to hit the sunshine state in over a decade. now strengthening over open water, winds over 120 miles per hour. reeking havoc across the caribbean for the past 24 hours. making a second landfall in eastern cuba, leveling a town. officials in haiti still trying to assess the damage. the main bridge that connects to the hard hit south is now washed out. and officials postponing indefinitely. our linsey davis is on the ground. >> reporter: people worried about the potential for landslides and even possibly cholera. it's difficult to know the full extent of the damage on this island because in some of the areas most impacted by hurricane matthew, communication has been cut off. >> reporter: matthew now barrelling towards the bahamas. and in nassau, airports closed, residents who stayed behind are

>> my stomach tells me that this one might be bad. >> reporter: 3500 guests in hotels. alex perez is in nassau. >> some 3,000 people riding out the storm here at this iconic hotel. 90% of americans. they'll spend the night in a conference room turned into a shelter. >> reporter: now with 24 hours to go, florida and much of the southeast tracking this storm's every move. >> we're going to get whatever comes at us, imagine a category 2, we're in trouble. >> has been a while, but the others are just like tropical storms, whatever, this is a little scary. >> reporter: residents forced to choo supplies running low. tempers running high. >> this is the line. i've already been to three gas stations that are shut down because they are out of gas. >> reporter: these lines are long, but these people are the lucky ones because most of the gas stations in this area have already run out of gas. the governor calling up 500 national guards groups, and the president warning residents. >> if you get an evacuation order, just remember that you can always rebuild.

hurricane matthew bearing down right now on the bahamas. it's expected to gain strength today as it heads towards florida's east coast. we're tracking the storm every step of the way. turning now to some frightening moments playing out on a southwest airlines flight louisville as smoke filled the cabin before the plane even taxied to the runway. >> a passenger says his samsung smart phone started burning, but this phone wasn't one of those fire-prone galaxy note 7s. thisho replacements. here is abc's david kerley. >> reporter: what happened in this jet at the gate at louisville could mean bigger trouble for samsung. according to a passenger, it was his smoking burning replacement note 7 phone. >> i noticed smoke pouring out of my pocket. pulled the phone out of my pocket, threw it on the ground where it continued to smoke and burn and smolder into the carpet.

florida. many will be shut until next week. here's some of the aerial images of the heavy damage on haiti's southwest peninsula. more than 3100 homes have been destroyed, at least ten deaths blamed on the storm, and united states has sent experts to haiti to assess the damage. u.s. is also providing $1.5 million in food and other disaster relief. >> and in the united states, mass evacuations are taking place people are as far north as the carolinas being told to leave their homes as matthew moves north. abc's rob marciano is in the charleston area right now where the roads have been packed. >> reporter: evacuations underway. along the south carolina coast, more than a quarter million people told to get out immediately. and that number could grow as the storm gets closer. >> we want you to evacuate. we do not want you to stay. >> reporter: residents boarding

and now heading for safer ground. for those without cars a fleet of buses offering a ride, for people like samir schneider. >> it's going to be super flooded, so we decided to leave. >> reporter: traffic already bumper to bumper on interstate 26, the main artery out of charleston, and then the highway patrol blocking eastbound traffic. >> absolutely no one on the roads, that is what troopers are looking for. >> reporter: soon making the major interstate a one-way hi out faster. this map showing the state's evacuation routes and where the interstate 26 traffic is now going in a single direction, away from the coast. it's the first time they had contra flow on interstate 26. so far, so good. you are evacuating, they say gas up and be ready to go all the way to columbia. the last time they had an evacuation for a major hurricane was in 1999, floyd, turning a two hour drive into a 12 hour nightmare. they certainly don't want that happening again. rob marciano, abc news,

and accuweather's justin povick has been tracking hurricane matthew's latest movements. >> he joins us now with a look at what to expect in the coming hours. good morning, justin. >> thanks, good morning to you as well. we have major hurricane matthew with the potential to strengthen even more today, churning its way off to the north and the west. the impacts will be felt later on today just off the coastline here of florida, more so from south beach northbound to west palm beach and projected path taking it along the space coast here later on friday, and also into friday night. the potential here for hurricane force winds from jacksonville all the way southbound towards port st. lucy. and in terms of rainfall, we could see over 8 inches of precipitation over the course of the next couple days, and a
