lauren is in st. augustein, florida with more. >> in north carolina matthew bringing record breaking floods. more than 500 rescued across the state and streets became river rapids. fayette really, people stayed from on top of vehicles and inside of them. not everyone making it out alive. the storm killing two people in the car as they were washed away. the storm showed its force all the way. ripping apart peers in oak island and myrtle beach. strong winds bringing down power lines and trees from the carolinas down through georgia. this after flooding cities and nooking out power to more than a million. >> you can see it difficult to move around and operate.

homeowners returning. this restaurant in st. augustein destroyed overnight. >> i never expected this. this is horrible. this is my worst nightmare. it really is. >> residents in this neighborhood were some of the millions told to evacuate and some now returning home to this. they boarded up the windows and prepared for the storm but that couldn't stop a tree from falling on their abc news. >> i'm awake in a nightmare right now. >> emotions so high there. a heart breaking story developing out of palm springs, california. these two officers you see here shot and killed in the line of duty. jose, father of eight, was a 35-

december. 35-year-old lesley leaves behind a 4-month-old daughter. dozens of officers were lined up. a third officer shot remains in the hospital and as you can imagine, the entire community mourning those officers right now. >> so here you have a wonderful, young, dedicated female officer that pressed forward every day to make it better for everybody else. here you have a guy 35 years in still pushing a patrol car for our community to make it better on a day he wasn't even scheduled to work. >> it breaks your heart to hear the details. all this started yesterday when officers were called to a home to resolve a family dispute. the man they were talking to suddenly pulled out a gun and opened fire on them. we have learned he was taken

morning. >> new information on a shooting we first brought you yesterday morning. police identified the victim killed in a shooting. 18-year-old diaz. either this guy didn't see the camera or didn't care. the guy made off with the box they kept in the truck overnight. they packed it up for an early morning trip but they don't understand why somebody would stoop so low. >> he waits all year to go camping and somebody creeps right in and thinks they have entitlement and they don't. >> police are now looking into this burglary. if you recognize who this guy is, please give him a call. keep your eyes on the screen now. this is video of a chief accused of several robberies.

story. a scary encounter after an officer was dazed with his anataser. police telling us the man inside of a home took the officers phaser shooting him in the leg with it. the suspect this morning, thomas berry, is in custody. we're keeping an eye on what's happening in court tomorrow. accused murder accused of shooting and killing a detention officer back in 2013 just 15 at the time has pleaded not guilty to first degree murder but you can be sure we'll be following this tomorrow in court. >> 5:07. today marks one year of the deadly shooting at flag staff. one killed and three others hurt. the accused gunman shot at the group of students after they hit him in the face and chased

sheriff paul babeu was headmaster at desisto school in massachusetts. a boarding school rife with abuse. a lot of things went down that probably shouldn't have. this isn't about abuse or neglect, except these records show the state found it, students and parents testified about it, and a judge ordered it to stop. the cornering, the sheeting, i didn't know how to live and function as a normal human being. i'll end with that, thank you so much.

78 in glendale. we're going to give you an hour by hour look at the forecast and let you know how much you're going to sweat. there's a lot going on this weekend. >> in democracy, 2016, make sure you're registered to vote. big dead line around the corner tomorrow. justin, what do people need to know? >> the dead line is tomorrow. so many hitting the streets trying to get folks registered to vote and encouraging them to get out and vote. one of the groups is one arizona coalition. they had a big push here yesterday in the valley trying to get folks registered to vote. in one day they registered 13,000 people. just really a big push by this group to encouraging people. time is ticking to get folks registered.

sure that people have the access to get out and vote. >> all right. so again, tomorrow is the dead line to register to vote. if you haven't registered, it's easy. you can do it online president at this point you're going to have to that or do it in person at the office. >> welshing right now, a commuter train off the tracks in new york. at least 11 people were hurt after a long island railroad train went off the rail here are some images of that. a spokes person said it hit a work train on the tracks causing three train cars to derail. the train caught fire after the crash. right now, officials are investigating to figure out how all of this happened.

hurricane matthew right now, what's left of it downgraded to a tropical storm. still dangerous fight left in it. more than a foot of rain in north carolina. dozens of homes and businesses also flooding. matthew claiming 10 lives. that's just here in the u.s. alone. those floods are dangerous even for firefighters. you can see the water so high a fire truck, even a fire truck got stuck attempting people. officials say dozens of water rescues happened throughout the night and people in south carolina not only dealing with flooding from matthew but a huge fire engulfing this structure in myrtle beach. residents had to be evacuated. authorities say the flames sparked in one building and high winds from the hurricane caused that fire to spread to other buildings. >> probably the hardest hit

thousands are now homeless. authorities say there's growing threats of other diseases and that could lead to many people getting sick. patients in new york trying to help those survivors of hurricane matthew. a bakery in brooklyn is collecting supplies that plans to ship to haiti. the bakery's co-owner wants people to donate things like flashlights, batteries and toiletries. freight companies that could help ship the donations. >> our state sending more than a dozen red cross volunteers to the south east to help they're on their way to georgia to help workers there. setting up shelters for people forced to leave their homes. >> it's wonderful to see these

to be able to be a little bit happy until safe. >> those who stay at shelters get three meals a day and showers and a safe place to stay. with bad news surrounding matthew, there may be a small silver lining this morning. the storm could put a temporary stop to mosquitoes spreading the zika virus. this time of year mosquito populations typically start to dwindle. today there's been 141 transmitted cases of zika in florida alone. >> beget the first look at a mug shot of a man accused in an attempted robbery. jr. arrested by u.s. marshalls last friday night and said he punched aid woman in the face

we're told an attack could be much worse. investigators while serving a search warrant found items related to a crime and paraphernalia. tragedy in california. a 5-year-old boy in critical condition after a boat capsizes. the coast guard saying all people are accounted for. 27 adults and three kids were on the boat that sank. some of them trapped under the hull. u.s. coast guard, divers and helicopters responding quickly and were able to get everyone out in 30 minutes. that little boy is expected to survive. >> this was huge. not anything that could be in a neighborhood where children are playing. >> one person dead after a trench collapses in utah. crews working to build a few foundation for a home were there when it happened. a 20-year-old construction
