of the holiest days on the jewish calendar. those are some of our stories on this tuesday, october 11th. from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning, everybody. we're going to start with president politics and congressional politics for that matter. donald trump facing more fallout after a weekend that started with a political bomb shell and ended with a nasty debate. >> house speaker paul ryan will no longer defend donald trump nor campaign for him. ryan did not withdrawal his endorsement, but told house republicans to do what's best for themselves in their districts. >> ryan's decision came days after the release of the recording in which trump is heard making lewd comments about women, including entertainment tonight's host nancy o'dell. she addressed the tape on her show saying women shouldn't be ob objectified even in the locker room. >> they are both going to

we have more on the explosive events that played out over the weekend including the behind scenes drama at the debate. here's tom llamas. >> reporter: donald trump set the tone for the night less than two hours before the debate, luring reporters to his hotel. promising a glimpse of his last-minute preparations. what they got instead, a shocking stunt. trump at a table surrounded by women who claimed they were abused by former president bill clinton. we're learning trump had more in store. he wanted to seat the women in the vip box reserved for trump's family. his close adviser, rudy giuliani, telling the washington post we wanted to have them shake hands with bill to see if bill would shake hands with them. but the commission on debates threatened to call security. the women sat elsewhere, and bill clinton shook hands with members of the trump family instead. but when the candidates finally took the stage, would they shake

line. matthew is now blamed for 27 deaths from florida to virginia, and more than a million people still without power in the storm zone, and it could be days or even weeks before power is restored. more than 1,400 people in north carolina have been saved by high water rescue teams and hundreds of roads remain flooded including parts of busy interstate 95. the u.s. navy is in haiti, trying to help residents there recover and rebuild aftermath ewe. this naval mission was joined by a marine unit. efforts are eing concentrated on haiti's southwest peninsula. the u.n. says 750,000 people in that region will need life saving help through the end of the year. the death toll in haiti has risen above 1,000. new details on the shooting that killed two palm springs' california police officers. the father of the alleged gunman reportedly told a neighbor that his son was armed and, quote,

strategizing by hillary clinton's inner circle before the bid for the white house. it's from the campaign chairman, and they reveal aids were concerned that bill clinton's business dealings could damage his wife's presidential aspirations, and other e-mails show how they grappled with the best way to position hillary clinton as a change agent. now to the growing crisis in the middle east. there's a plea from a humanitarian group to end the violence in syria. doctors without borders wants russia and the syria government to stop bombing in aleppo to reach the wounded. it says there are only 35 doctors serving a population of 275,000 people. meantime, we're seeing another young face of the conflict. take a look at this. this 4-year-old girl crying and calling for her father after she was injured in a mortar strike. they were eventually reunited. and here is a haunting video of

aleppo. the images coming from a drone shows homes and other buildings reduced to rubble by air strikes and bombings. more than 200 people have been killed since the latest offensive began only three weeks ago. also a call for more aid in haiti as that country tries to recover from hurricane matthew. the death toll from the storm surpassed 1,000, and haitian officials say more than 1 million people are in need of makeshift clinics are treating dozens of people for cholera and there's fears that the disease will kill more people than the hurricane. at least 10,000 people died from cholera after the 2010 earthquake. in this country, the flooding from hurricane matthew in north carolina is not getting any better. authorities say more than 1,400 people were saved in emergency rescues in the last day. president obama has signed a disaster declaration for north carolina making federal funding available to flood victims there. abc's matt gutman found out there are plenty. >> reporter: the unrelenting deluge from hurricane matthew bursting dams across north carolina.

all of these businesses swamped, but, perhaps, what's most astounding? this scope of this flooding, that water goes all the way back a mile and a half. the state cut in half by washed out roads. parts of the major interstate, i-95 shut down. eight dams burst in this county alone. i want to give you a sense for the power of that flooding using that live drone shot right now. this was once a bridge completely blown out. you can see debris hurled hundreds of yards in that direction. more bad news for folks living here. the rivers are only expected to rise. matt gutman, abc news. a settlement reached in connection with the nation's deadliest landslide. 43 people died when the slide wiped out a rural neighborhood north of seattle back in 2014. the state of washington and the timber company that logged an area above the collapse agreed to pay survivors and family members $60 million.

right now, it looks like war between the republican presidential nominee and some of the most prominent figures in the party. jonathan carl, abc news, new york. well, the ratings are in from clinton-trump, the rematch. the viewership for the second debate did not reach record levels set for the first head-to-head meeting last month. an estimated 66.5 million people watched sunday night. that's down from 84 million two weeks ago. however, sunday's figure was slightly above the viewership for the second debate between president obama and mitt romney in 2012. the third and final debate is next wednesday night. moving on to the disaster left by hurricane matthew, this video is from the fayetteville, north carolina area. it might sum it up best. water surrounds the houses all the way up to the roofline. some rivers in this area are not expected to crest until friday. >> as a result of all this, hundreds of roads are closed in the state, incoming parts of
