101 to the i-10 stack. no crashes or issues. we had a crash at dobson and u.s. 60 but that's all clear. we'll head to the north part of the valley during the next traffic check. voting begins tomorrow and the race for sheriff is heating up. >> this morning sheriff arpaio facing >> reporter: at 10:00 a.m. here at the federal courthouse, the big question everyone wants to know, will arpaio be criminally charged? this is all for the racial profiling case that dates back years and has cost taxpayers $48 million. he was found guilty of deliberately disobeying court orders, in this case continuing

arpaio admitted to continuing to do that but says it wasn't intentional. if convicted in a federal court, he could face fines and also jail time. back live, we'll be inside the courtroom and keep you updated on what happens. breaking early this morning, maybe you heard the sirens and commotion in mesa. we are on the scene of this, a driver with hi high beams on that it ended in a neighborhood and two people took off running from a car and into a home near broadway and warren. police tried to pull the driver over but he took off. officers decided to back off after he started running red lights at high speed, but a helicopter took over and led the officers rite to them. one suspect needed medical

a driver slammed into a palm tree at 40th street south of mcdowell overnight. no word on the driver's condition. 40th street has reopened. i know he's not known to wear seat belts. there's been a couple times we warned hip of stuff out here. >> now ryan johnson is mourning the loss of his best friend. two teens and a 22-year-old are dead after a fiery crash central avenue and butler. one teen actually got that car as a gift. >> reporter: they did, got that mustang as a graduation gift. i want to show you this, a growing memorial here along central. all the candles here, this is where that mustang hit this tree and ignited on impact. you can see how charred it is here. this morning the families are really just trying to come to

phoenix police say the three were street racing down central and lost control. two were ejected, one had to be cut out of his car. the families are just left shattered. >> he was my sister's first and only son. we're just taking it one step at a time and praying. >> reporter: continues to grow, much larger than it was last night when we were out here. neighbors this morning were asking how fast the young men were going. at this point that's not been determined. we are still waiting to learn the identity of a man accused of attacking state troopers. this is breaking news you saw about 24 hours ago. dps says the man nearly ran

patrol cars. he was shot and killed when the troopers felt threatened. he's accused of breaking into a home and killing a family's dog. he claims his buddy bobby was with him and police say he admitted to the burglary and it may have been an inside job, saying bobby's sister lives at the home and he was the one who ki no word on bobby this morning. late last night we learned the chief deputy was indicted after an information involving rico money. today the applications for section 8 housing will be accepted online starting at 10:00 to thursday night.

were targeted, smashing and grabbing, so lock those vehicles. and crews are cleaning up after tempe officials say homeless camps keep popping up and leaving all sorts of trash behind here. the city is spending thousands of clean it up. they will be discussing what to do at thursday's city council meeting. the sun is up at 6:30, so you may have to wait a while to get the once that sun is up, we'll see mostly clear skies. we are in the 60s to low 70s across the valley, glendale at 66 degrees. nice to step out this morning. it will be a nice morning but keep in mind we are in for another warm day, temperatures getting back above average. phoenix goes from 72 now to 74 by 8:00, 83 by 10:00 a.m.

90 degrees. that's close to the average high for this time of year. but we'll keep warming above that. today's high, up to 95 degrees. we'll hit that around 3:00 to 4:00. that will be the warmest point in the day. we are tracking a disturbance moving across the state. i'll show you where i'm seeing the sprinkles and where we're seeing changes, coming up in a few minutes. taking a look at the roads including the north valley. just 6 minutes here from 75th avenue to the 17. the 17 still looking really good as well. a look at the east valley, a smooth drive on i-10 at loop 202. it is picking up slightly. i'll break down the rest of the east valley drive in a few minutes. time now 5:10. shots fired on a los angeles freeway leaves one person dead.

public library will be hosting a town hall aimed at clearing up the confusion and allowing you to ask some questions you may have. the office is inviting groups from both sides of the aisle to pitch why you should vote a certain way. they believe events like this make people more comfortable going to the polls or casting a ballot. the secretary of state says she hopes you'll take advantage of it because it's free and open the anyone. we have the information on the screen here. this is happening tonight at 5:30 at the mesa public library near country club and main. it could be a very good idea to take advantage of that tonight. this is the last one that's going to be happening in the phoenix area. we have more information at abc15.com. megan thompson, abc 15 news. back to the abc 15 live

getting underway in l.a. this happened on i-5 in irvine. authorities got a call about somebody running in the northbound lanes then switched to the southbound lanes when he was hit. officers say when they arrived to check on the man, he was on his feet and started fighting with the officers. california highway patrol then opened fire and killed that man. the shooting caused significant traffic backups there. across the nation, one man recovering after an encounter with two bears in california. he was hiking when a brown bear approached and he started walking backwards to escape. that is when the second bear that was behind him attacked. the bite marks on his neck, and surprisingly he was able to get away. there are more than 400 possible cases of mumps and the

reported at least one case from their school. any student without an mmr vaccine is required to stay home at least 26 days unless they get vaccinated. students in chicago are heading to class but they didn't know if teachers were going to show up. the chicago teachers union will not go on strike in the nation's third largest school district. a last minute agreement was met last night. it's been a rough go for california with the drough wildfires. this latest brush fire, it's growing in napa county. video shows people forced to evacuate because the small fire is threatening homes and wineries there. it's about 50 acres in size but it is burning right now and could change quickly. always important to watch the fires, be sure they don't

blue bell just can't catch a break here, now recalling all the ice cream products that contain cookie dough. it is available in 16 states and you may know somebody who enjoys it. the recall comes after an iowa- based company recalled cookie dough due to contamination. this is not connected to the recall we told you about yesterday involving those nestli ice cream cones. it may not feel like fall here yet but some spots are beautiful right now. >> we enjoy the picture from the folks in the high country when they send them to us, to get a taste of that fall. this one, i had to share it with you. kevin took this near sunrise. just picturesque and beautiful

change colors. certainly not feeling like fall back here in the valley, but again, we love to see those pictures an share them with everybody else. send them to share@abc15.com. we have very nice conditions this morning and this afternoon we're back above average again. starting with 72 degrees and mostly clear skies right now. we'll keep clear skies in the forecast throughout the afternoon with temperatures warming back to 90 degrees by lunchtime, and today's high 95. another warm day on tap, putting temperatures about 4 degrees above average for this time of year. we'll feel the mid-90s all across the valley today. we are tracking a disturbance moving across the state today but you won't notice it. we have a few sprinkles up north but the clouds will thin out throughout the day.

sprinkle this morning, it's a dry day as this disturbance clips northern arizona. the valley staying dry here and really over the next 72 hours as we look at the futurecast. we are tracking another disturbance that will move through tomorrow, but again, you're barely going to notice it. we'll see some passing high clouds at times over the next few days. we are dry through the end of the week into the weekend with temperatures staying above average over the we'll have a drop in the highs on thursday, still above average. mid-90s going into the weekend. the good news, we are dropping morning temperatures in the mid- to upper 60s each morning. we'll talk about the air quality changes next. still green on the valley freeways, no crashes to worry about right now.

the plane and the plane continues onto boston. no update on their condition. back at home, a man is recovering after being hit by a car at 19th and dunlap. he was in a wheelchair when he was hit. the driver did stay on the scene. officers say impairment does not appear to be a factor at this point. mesa police need your help identifying this man. he's no joker. they are hunting the batman. they say this guy pm near country club and university, and then showed his gun to the clerk. she was so scared she couldn't open the register, so he grabbed some snacks and took off. the gloves couldn't cover that tattoo on his left arm there. if you have information on who he is, call mesa police. this morning two young

disappeared in phoenix. officers are talking with one 8- year-old's mom's boyfriend. officers say the boyfriend failed to report her missing until 48 hours later. then in mesa, a 9-year-old, police say she ran away from home. jade coyle walked home. we're told she had a change of clothes and a phone. a memorial is three young men were killed in a fiery crash. officers believe they were street racing. >> reporter: mixed in with this memorial, there are still a lot of car parts. you can see this growing memorial here. it just continues to grow from last night. and you can see the charred tree here. this is where one of the cars

on impact. some neighbors came out here, pulling the men away from that vehicle. this morning we are hearing from family and friends of the young men. two were ejected, not wearing seat belts. the damage to the vehicles were so bad that police had to use vin numbers to figure out what kind of car it was. family members say they tried to warn their loved one that not wearing his seat belt extremely dangerous. >> to always wear your seat belts. they say it's the law. wear it for safety. you never know when somebody is going to cut you off or something. that's what they're for. >> reporter: family members in tears as they looked at the spot where theiloved ones died. we are waiting to hear more

speed of the drivers as well. one valley father says he is doing the right thing but police say otherwise. brad porter jr. says his family has been homeless since 2014 and a friend gave him the idea to gamble his last few dollars in hopes of getting the family a room for the night. >> decisions, you know. >> reporter: when they went to check on the boy, their car was surrounded by rescue workers. officers say the two reeked of alcohol and found a container of marijuana. maybe you heard the sirens in the tempe area. this was the scene early this morning, firefighters rushing to the house fire near i-10 and baseline. we're told the home is

act fast. they were successful in keeping the flames from spreading. no one was injured. the stafford area still trying to dry out after a storm over the weekend slammed the area. the school districts there have been closed for two weeks after major flooding in several school buildings. see the water in the classrooms? we are hearing from the superintendent in stafford, who says meantime they will just try and >> just found out from our food service company that we'll offer breakfast, lunch, and hopefully dinner to students and families in the cafeteria just like the summer program, so that should be a huge problem. >> schools there plan to reopen on the 24th of this month. students in glendale will

they have been closed for a couple of weeks because of repair crews fixing cracks and structural problems with buildings. we have breaking news of a fire burning in germany. this is burning at a historic high-rise in germany. i just pulled up the video. i'm going to hit the play button here and we'll watch it together. look at the flames and the smoke there, downtown berlin. this is a spinning on the top. the concern, if the top of that roof collapses, that emblem is 33,000 pounds. we'll keep a close eye on this. time now 5:37. our temperatures are down to 72 in phoenix. it's a nice morning, mostly clear skies, maybe a few clouds still lingering as the sun comes up. but today we'll have abundant

warming back in the 90s by this afternoon. enjoy the cooler temperatures this morning. we're up to 83 by 10:00 a.m. and back in the 90s by lunchtime. sunny and dry conditions in the afternoon with a high of 95 today, putting us about 4 degrees above the average for this time of year. temperatures will drop back in the 80s but not till after sunset, which is just before 6:00 this evening. we're down to89 by 7:00 with clear skies in place. as we get the abundant sunshine and fairly light winds, the ozone concentrations and dust and smoke particles, those will be inching back up into the moderate range. you may notice that haze across the valley as we get that inversion layer with the pollutants being trapped near the surface. we'll notice that over the next few days but no major air quality alerts. we'll talk temperatures in a few minutes. the north valley commute

sheriff paul babeu was headmaster at desisto school in massachusetts. a boarding school rife with abuse. a lot of things went down that probably shouldn't have. this isn't about abuse or neglect, because none of this was found. except these records show the state found it, students and parents testified about it, and a judge ordered it to stop. the cornering, the sheeting, i didn't know how to live and function as a normal human being. i'll end with that, thank you so much.

past. she's live on good morning america talking about who got her through it. let's talk about the 60s we are waking up to in much of the valley. phoenix milder with 72 right now, but we are down to 64 in mesa now, upper 60s in scottsdale and goodyear. we are waking up to mostly clear skies on the desert doppler, quiet across the we have a few sprinkles well off to our north along the arizona border. that is really it here this morning. we'll be tracking a disturbance that moves across the northern pocket of our state today. it will bring breezes up north but don't expect any more rain. we'll clear the rain chances out as well. here in the valley, we don't even notice that. mostly clear skies through the

to moving across but still we are looking dry through the day tomorrow, even into thursday. so not going to see any rain chances looks like in the immediate future. up north, if you're driving in the high country, winds are stronger, gusting up to 30 miles an hour. here in phoenix they are out of the west southwest just 5 to 10 miles an hour. the high today up to 95 degrees, so another warm day on tap. temperatures stay in the 90s through the end of morning temperatures, we are dropping into the 60s as we head toward the end of the week. we'll talk about how cool it will feel once you step outside in just a few minutes. southbound side of i-17, we looked at that a few minutes ago. now on the northbound side near 7th avenue, we are a crash slowing that right lane down. stay to the left to get by. it's also slowing the onramp down. 19th avenue could be a good
