going in for the ball. it looked liken -- now they are going to throw another flag. looked like the offensive linemen were getting into it with the officials. >> ed: gates was upset because he was jumped on by panfil at the end there. >> mike: gates thought it was a cheap shot. >> ed: a guy with a really high upside. coaches think highly of just a sophomore. that was the finish of a play. gates goes to pull him off of the pile. they threw another flag. >> referee: we have multiple fouls on the play. personal foul, offense.
4:01 pm
after the play unsportsmanlike conduct offense number 68. 15-yard penalty. third down. >> ed: gates continued to jaw and was called for the personal foul. the referee there wisely not using numbers there on the first time around saying that one does not count. i can see where gates got upset. he saw his pal being slammed to the ground. it >> mike: basically the first two penalties offset each other. the late penalty is assessed. >> ed: yeah. >> mike: let's just let the clock run and get out of here. play counted. third down and 18.

4:04 pm
the first 16 seconds of the game. gerad parker took over for darrell hazell. tried a halfback pass on the first play that was intercepted. tommy armstrong walked in and then all of a sudden the pass game for purdue showed up. >> mike: i know that everybody was thinking the same thing after the first 16 seconds, this could be 56-0. this could be an absolute disaster. you would not have blamed the players going in the tank after that. heck of a way to start on the road against undefeated number 8 but they sucked it up and played really hard. >> ed: after the interception blough ran up and down the sideline saying that we got this. he came out and delivered. he really played well. and this is just a sophomore. again, darrell hazell is gone as the head coach. >> mike: is this a five minute

4:07 pm
bandwagon. but they are on it. >> mike: marshall. i thought mike riley had a great answer when we asked are you the number eight team in the country. he said i don't know. we play who is on the schedule. so far we beat all of them. we will find out later. >> ed: he and his staff have been around for a while. you think about wt oregon state. ultra competitive. that ball is batted away. reilly is as nice of a person and optimistic as you can ever meet in this business. class and quality the whole way. >> ed: i will say the fan base here wasn't exactly over the moon when he was hired.

half. how do you describe the play of your offense? >> sporadic, all over the place. we made plays when we absolutely had to have something going. when we had a scoring drive. but it was pretty sporadic. we did not have anything consistent. i thought that coach parker did a nice job of prepping that team to play today in a hard circumstance. right now we are glad to win. >> jerry: you are 7-0, given how happened today, what are your priorities and concerns as you try to get ready to play wisconsin? >> we always talk about winning the games. immediately when we do that, we have to go back to examine what it looked like. i really, really like this team a lot but we are not very pretty often enough. we are going to just try to get better. we have to go back and work.
4:11 pm
will see it and we will go to work to do everything we can to get ready to beat wisconsin. >> jerry: coach, congratulations. >> mike: thank you jerry. thank you coach. >> ed: undefeated and not pretty is okay. >> mike: still undefeated isn't it? >> ed: yes, it is. >> mike: tonight at 8:00 eastern saturday night football as number 2 ohio state at penn state. so long from lincoln, nebraska.
