thanks for choosing us. that breaking news, this massive crash involving more than 20 trucks and cars shutting down i-17 north of the valley. 17 patients taken to hospitals, and this is a live look from air 15. look at that long line of cars. this southbound lanes at sunset point. abc 15 is there live now. what is the traffic like on the ground? >> reporter: traffic just got moving. opening up one lane so that traffic can slowly start getting by after people have been sitting here in their cars for more than three hours with a massive backup involving 24

cattle hauler. that tow truck is trying to get some of the cars that are still left there damaged. it's amazing there are no fatalities. there were 17 patients taken to the hospital. four of them had to be flown out of here and 13 by ambulance. crews were down here cleaning up signs from an earlier crash near new river that caused earlier di lays, so cars have been slowing down that semi was unable to slow down plowing through a row of cars and continuing about a half mile down. we spoke with a woman who saw it all happen and rushed to help. >> we found medical people and got first aid kits. >> reporter: and as you can see out here live, that traffic is just starting to get going, moving very slowly, but it is

waiting for hours. still causing significant delays because backups have been continuing for hours. the red cross was out here to help people who had been stranded in their cars in the sun by providing them with water. >> it was no small feat to get us that up close look. thank you for that. that wasn't the only bad crash. earlier today, a deadly crash and a small brush fire causing a huge backup on near new river. this one happened around 11:30 this morning. dps says a motorcyclist who was not wearing a helmet was killed. at one time the freeway was blocked causing an 8-mile back up. all lanes have since reopened. more breaking news now, a shooting at an apartment complex where a swat team has been called out. abc 15 is live near 75th avenue

happening there. >> reporter: tensions have been high in this area for hours so far this afternoon. i want to show you real quick, this is the apartment where this was all happening. it's all clear right now. phoenix police just telling us what was happening, why this whole area was roped off. we saw swat, helicopters, and k- 9s. a man came to this apartment complex expecting to meet an online date. when he got here, he was shot by two men. he was taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. this area was closed for hours why they tried to find the gunman or anybody tied to this shooting. they were flying a chopper over the scene, using k-9 dogs, and then we saw the tactical team come out. phoenix police telling us they have two men now in custody. as you can see behind me, this

we had pop-up showers in that southeastern pocket of maricopa county. something to keep in mind, look how short-lived these have been. not lasting very long. just to the south of hela bend and even more as you get into pema county. lightning strikes in central pema county. rain approaching the tuscon, the i-10 area just to the southwest of oracle at this hour. our rain chances in the valley will be slim, just about a 10% chance that one of those showers or storms makes it into the valley. we'll continue with clouds. right now we're on the warm side. 92 in scottsdale. 95 in chandler. 80s in the forecast by 7:00. we'll see upper 70s in the forecast by 11 o'clock. a 10% chance of rain. rain chances higher tomorrow.

up. right now a 3-year-old girl in surprise is in a fight for her life after what appears to be a tragic accident. surprise fire says the little girl was climbing up on a dresser, she fell, and the dresser apparently fell on her. this happened near bell road and grand avenue. we're told the family was performing cpr when rescue crews got there. the toddler was flown to phoenix childrens hospital in critical condition. police are investigating. democracy 2016. gabby giffords and her husband at home but on the campaign trail. >> hillary is courageous. >> hosting a rally at the hillary clinton campaign headquarters in tuscon today. her message today, though, vote. vote and vote early.

a tour bus and crashes in southern california. it happened this morning on interstate 10 near palm springs. the usa holiday tour bus was returning to los angeles after a visit to the red earth casino in thermal, california. it's unclear if the bus was speeding. the impact so strong that, that bus went about 15 feet into the

crash on i-17 at sunset point. traffic slowly but surely inching along up there. just into our news room, pictures of a mountain rescue on camelback. they helped a 26-year-old man with a knee injury. he was brought down the trail in a big wheel and take ton a local hospital. an update to breaking news we brought you this morning. the phrase lucky to be alive may not even be a strong enough phrase to use in this one. a 23-year-old tonight after flying off the 202 west, slamming into a guardrail, rolling end over end before landing in the a tree wheels up. dps closing the onramp at 40th street for hours while they cleared the area. troopers telling us this woman also fortunate the crash was spotted. >> this time a day if nobody was traveling behind this particular victim, she may have

beautiful sunset, clouds out there, you won't find any rain across the valley. just to the south of hela bend, head's up, shower activity moving into your area. this moving to the north. it's been cycling through, dispating over the last couple of hours. even across pema county, we have a couple showers and a couple rumbles of thunder. things pretty quiet rain chances here going up as we head into the evening. back to the valley sitting in the 90s. lows tonight back in the 70s. partly to mostly cloudy skies as we go through the overnight hours. about a 10% chance of rain. slight rain chances here in the valley. take a look tomorrow and our temperatures are headed back up into the 90s. by 10, partly to mostly cloudy skies.

here's how those rain chances are mapping out as we look at the broader perspective. spotty showers, couple rumbles of thunder south. sprinkles moving into the grand canyon. that activity will begin to increase as we go through the next several how weres. here's why. we have a huge storm system sitting off the north west coast. that's drawing that moisture in from the southwest into a rs. we have a disturbance passing through as we head into that brings those rain chances up across the higher terrain. here across the valley, we'll have slight chances for a couple of spotty showers. not all of us will see rain but we have the chance there. the best shower and thunderstorm chances will be to the north. rain chances hour by hour, 10% chance overnight and even for

30% just for a couple of hours tomorrow afternoon into the early evening hours. the rain chances begin to diminish and they'll be out of here by tuesday morning. slight drop in our highs. above average high. tomorrow we're into the low 90s. right back up to 94, mid-90s as we get into the middle of the workweek forecast. 79 in sedona. 75 in 90s for bull head city. back in the 70s, 44 at the grand canyon. 43 in flagstaff. 48 in sholo heights. tomorrow 60s. temperatures in flagstaff on the cooler side, 76. low 90s expected not only in phoenix but across all of the valley. 70s tonight in the east valley. waking up tomorrow morning, upper 80s to low 90s in the east and west valley.
