center for bill murray. the 66-year-old was awarded the mark twain prize for american humor joining the ranks the bob newhart, carol burnett, and lily tomlin. those are just some of the top stories on this monday, october 24th. from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning, everyone. we're going to get started this half hour with one of the deadliest road accidents in california history. >> 13 people were killed and dozens injured when the bus plowed into the back of a tractor-trailer. it was traveling in the early morning hours. here's more. >> reporter: the tour bus crashed into end semitruck's trailer on this stretch of desert highway near palm springs, 100 miles from los angeles. the force of the collision is plain to see in the mangled wreckage. the entire front of the bus penetrated the back of the big rig.

says the bus was moving significantly faster than the truck. >> i will tell you the speed of the bus was so significant that when it hit the back of the big rig, the trailer, the trailer itself entered about 15 feet into the bus. >> reporter: this is all that's left of that semi behind us. it appeared the big rig swallowed the bus. several rows of seats in the front of the bus were crushed by impact. firefighters using ladders to remove bodies. the highway patrol gathered the victims' personal effects in paper bags. heavy machinery was needed to pull apart the massive metal wreckage. >> in almost 35 years, i've never been to a crash where there's been 13 confirmed fatalities. so it's tough. it's tough for all of us. >> reporter: the injured were taken to three hospitals. one doctor said some of their wounds could have been much worse. >> this bus struck something that was actually collapsible. when you usually see someone involved in a high speed motor vehicle crash what you see is

here is abc's adrian banker. >> reporter: investigators scrambling to determine the cause of the massacre on a southern california highway. >> in almost 35 years, i've never been to a crash where there's been 13 confirmed fatal accidents. so it's tough. it's tough for all of us. >> reporter: just before dawn, a tour bus coming from a casino slammed into the rear of a semi-truck. emergency crews racing to the rescue, pulling over 30 injured out, some in critical condition. survivors telling police they believe all the passengers were asleep at the moment of impact. officials saying most of the 13 killed sitting near the front of the bus. >> the bus was traveling significantly faster than the tractor trailer that it struck from behind. >> reporter: the force of the collision so severe, the bus careened 15 feet into the bed of the truck. this is all that's left of the truck behind us here. from witness accounts, it appeared the big rig swallowed that bus. officials saying there were no signs that the drive hit the brakes. highway shut down for hours as crews identify victims and clean

the bus driver among the dead. the tour bus company with no history of mechanical problems. and there are still so many questions for the loved ones waiting to hear back from the chp as to who was on that bus. they still have yet to identify the victims. and we know we talked to a couple family members here who are waiting to find out if a mother and grandmother survived. adrian banker, abc news, indio, california. >> such horrible images there from the desert in southern california we move on now to a manhunt that's underway in oklahoma for an armed an dangerous suspect wanted for shooting two police officers. the wanted man is identified as michael vance, recently released from jail for child sexual assault. he and another suspect allegedly opened fire on two officers with an ak-47. officials say they then car jacked a woman and shot her.
