girls were in a car just behind me here when the car ran out of gas. two of the four girls inside said, the gas station is just a few hundred feet away. they were trying to make it there, so two of them got out to push the car. unfortunately that's when another driver came behind them and slammed into them, pinning the two girls between those cars. another and from what we understand, they were in the red car and the other driver was in the white car. those girls are in surgery right now, in serious condition. police said it was a very difficult scene and it was hard to see those girls. it was very serious and we don't know what kind of recovery they are facing. the other driver is being

that happens quicker, already in the 90s by early afternoon. today's high, 95. when we could tie the record temperatures, coming up next. sheriff joe arpaio could be facing six months jail after formally being charged with criminal contempt of court. that stems from the sheriff's decision to ignore a judge's order and still immigration patrols. his trial will start in december. the question now, will the sheriff be judged but a jury of his peers or will a judge decide? >> if he does have a right to a jury trial, they're going to make the decision does that make sense to proceed with that, and can they. again, you have the government who may have a voice, may have a say on whether it's a jury or bench trial.

that meeting. we talked with one parent that wants the adults in charge held responsible, not the children. the school has until today to appeal the decision. one parent said there was no indication in the meeting if they will actually do that. new this morning, hundreds of new jobs coming due to an expansion the expansion was made possible thanks to a land purchase. samsung is bracing for possible bad news. the company will release its third quarter earnings tomorrow and it is not expected to be good after the massive recall involving the galaxy note 7 smartphone. sales are already down 30% and some economists think it is

>> reporter: two teens are in surgery right now. they ran out of gas and thought, we're so close. this is the gas station they were trying to get to, just a few hundred feet away. they decided to get out and push. slammed into the back of them, pinning two girls between the cars, ages 15 and 17. the other driver is being investigated for impairment as he recovers in the hospital as well. the roads are reopened but the investigation is just beginning for police right now. those two girls are in surgery. we'll are updates on air and online as soon as we can.

in the system. michael an melissa dugger had the children taken away from them but they were given back. earlier this month dcs found them living in deplorable conditions. one of the girls told police officers she was beaten with a tree stick wrapped in duct tape. in this facebook video, you can see their mom posting about parenting, going on a rant saying parents need to be tougher on children especially the children were removed from the home and the parents are behind bars facing 17 counts. an american theme park is taking action after a tragic accident in australia. two women and two men were killed on the river rapids ride in queensland and now busch gardens in tampa is closing a similar ride while they work to understand what went wrong.

push the car to a nearby gas station. another car rear-ended them, pinning the two girls, who are now in surgery. that driver is being investigated for possible impairment. no word on the charges he may face. megan thompson, abc 15 news. we have new information about a child abuse case. right now michael and melissa dugger are behind bars, accused of torturing, starving and beating two of their children. dcs received 8 prior reports about the parents but the children were not taken away until this month. the parents are facing 17 counts. happening today, drivers will finally be able to use the broadway road extension going westbound. this is a mile stretch between 51st and 43rd avenue. the eastbound lanes are not done yet but when finished, they will have three lanes in each direction and bike lanes.
