ago cleaning up where this jet ended this very dangerous incident. overnight -- >> we have an emergency in the airport. >> reporter: -- the boeing 737 campaign plane of mike pence skidded right off the end of the rainy runway at new york city's laguardia airport. >> tower, the aircraft is off the runway on the right side of the arrestor bed. it looks like it's intact. >> reporter: emergency crews, rescue teams flooding the scene, seeing that the jet had hit the safety barrier, tore through it and end up on the grass next to a roadway. >> i heard a noise. i didn't know what it was, i looked up and i saw this trump/pence plane making a noise screeching and it came to a stop right here. >> reporter: none of the reporters, staff or the candidate was hurt and they exited out the back of the jet. at a late night rally in new york, donald trump telling supporters about pence's plane accident. >> the plane skidded off the runway and was pretty close to grave, grave danger, but i just spoke to mike pence and he's fine. >> reporter: governor pence giving reporters the thumbs up

the accident. our campaign reporter, ines de la cuetara, was on the plane and says the touchdown was not smooth. >> reporter: felt kind of a big bump upon landing and then felt the plane kind of skid off the runway. you could tell something was wrong, although it was raining so we couldn't see anything of our windows, and the governor talked to us and asked us if everybody was okay. and that's when we realized something was wrong because he told us there was mud on his windows. >> reporter: it was 7:40 p.m. with wind and rain when the aircraft approached the runway. as it neared the end of it, it ran into the emergency material called an arrestor bed. >> it's designed to slow the airplane down quickly if the airplane were going off the runway. basically lightweight crushable concrete prevented what could have been a disaster. >> reporter: while no one was hurt, it was a travel nightmare at new york's major travel hub. laguardia airport's runways shut down for nearly two hours. >> we've got one runway that is

we will be working with the ntsb and a private contractor to come up with a plan to remove the aircraft. >> reporter: as you can see behind me another this hour, the runway has been reopened here at laguardia. the aircraft has been moved to the side, and we saw these crews working to clean all that concrete that this jet ripped through. the ntsb is on the scene, robin. they will be investigating today, talking to the crew about what happened during that landing that ended up right here at the end of the runway. >> want to get some answers. you mentioned about the concrete ripped up behind you, the arrestor bed. many have never heard about that before, using a special material. how does it work exactly? >> reporter: that arrester bed in this case is made of concrete. so as steve ganyard mentioned it's a lightweight concrete that they can get air into. it's hard but soft so when something really heavy hits it with energy, it kind of gives way. the concrete gives way and absorbs the energy so it stops the jet from run nothing that fence. the it hadn't, it would have ended up in the roadway. >> it did its job last night. thank you. george. i am here with governor pence.

you look okay this morning. >> yeah, we're great. >> pretty scary few seconds inside the plane. take us inside. >> well, it was a low ceiling and we came in and it was a landing at laguardia and we just immediately felt heavy braking on the runway, and the plane fishtailed a little bit, and just for a few seconds, you could feel us bouncing off and with mud splattered up on the wi the runway, but thank god everybody was fine. >> the collapsing runway worked the way it was supposed to work in that's what i was told. i'm just grateful. really grateful for some quick action not only by the pilots but also by first responders who were literally seemed like they were on the scene at laguardia before the aircraft even came to a halt and, you know, my son is a marine corps aviator and michael always tells us every landing you walk away from is a good one.

manipulated. do you believe that? >> what i believe is obviously, george. you have been at this a long time. there have certainly been instances throughout our lifetime and history of voter fraud. >> not that could change a national election. >> well, i don't -- i don't anticipate that's the case, but it's a good time for people, whether you're republican, democrat or independent to find a respectful way to participate in the election process. to vote and also to be a part of the polling. frankly, what a lot of people are talking about on the campaign trail i the administration that we're going to see an average of 25% increase in the premiums for obamacare. i think that has been startling and jarring for the american people. they know we can do better. we can do better than hillary clinton's plan. introduce more single payer and more government solutions, donald trump and i will repeal obamacare and we'll bring free market solutions more consumer choice and drive down the cost of health insurance without

his madison apartment earlier this month. those charges have opened the floodgates to new claims by four other women who also accuse cook of sexually assaulting them. now dozens of women are coming forward to police about their alleged encounters with the real estate and urban land economics major. >> it's scary. he lived a few floors from me. >> reporter: investigators say they discovered a black leather notebook inside a nightstand drawer in his apartment. on its pages, disturbing details of the women he allegedly met and what he wanted to do to them. in this photo, we see a checklist of what makes her special. color of eyes and even this box labe labeled, killed? but cook's attorneys are firing back insisting any encounters were consensual and say the nature of cook's journal entries was plain innocent. >> there's no woman name. there was no description of violent fantasy. nothing of that nature. >> reporter: cook is now behind bars. his bail is set at $200,000 and has yet to enter a plea for those filing against him. his next court date is set for november. george. >> okay, linsey, thanks. to amy with today's other top stories starting out with this protest that turned violent

that's right, george. more than 140 people have been arrested after police in riot gear clashed with protesters at the site of an oil pipeline in north dakota. police say the crowd was blocking roads, lighting fires and even throwing homemade explosives at the officers. the protesters say the pipeline under construction will endanger drinking water and disturb native american burial sites. a jury in oregon has acquitted rancher, ammon bundy, and six other men wildlife refugee last winter. bundy claimed it was a act of civil disobedience to protest the government's management of public land. the bundys still face charges for a standoff in 2014. in san diego the coast guard has offloaded 39,000 pounds of cocaine seized from drug smugglers off the coast of central america. coast guard officers have confiscated nearly $6 billion of the drug this year and that is a record. and a big surprise for a

but women younger than me are hearing those same words and for so many early detection can be life saving. >> feel free when i'm dancing, i feel like it's my safe place. >> reporter: for olivia hutcherson there's nothing quite like taking center stage. >> everyone talks about beyonce and when i get on stage it's like the other olivia comes out. >> other olivia. >> i need to come up with a cooler name than that, >> reporter: but on the night of her 26th birthday at the height of her career as a professional dancerolivia's life took an unprecedented turn. >> i remember looking down at the end of the night seeing blood on the inside of my blouse. the following day i went into the doctor's office. they told me it was nothing to worry about but i felt like something was wrong and went back to the doctor just three days later and i requested a mammogram. >> you requested a mammogram. >> i requested a mammogram. they didn't want to give it initially because i was 26.

i had no framily history but i wasn't leaving until i got it. >> and i were the picture of health. a professional dancer. >> yeah, cancer does not jim that. >> reporter: while her doctors were not able to explain the bleeding, after three mammograms olivia was diagnosed with dcis, the earliest stage of breast cancer. while in surgery her doctors who had recommended a double mastectomy found a stage 1 tumor on the right side which meant she needed chemotherapy. though only 5% of breast cancer cases h 12,000 women a year. 12,000 women with their lives before them. dating, marrying, having babies. fighting battles much different than older women. something jennifer finklestein knows all too well. >> i had just turned 32. it was five weeks before my wedding. it was shocking. i underwent a single mastectomy and began chemotherapy a week later instead of a honeymoon. it was the most isolating

launched five under 40. an organization that provides medical, emotional and beauty services to women under 40 fighting this disease. >> they helped me with the wig. they helped me with the head shaving. there's always somebody on the other end of the line to get you through the moment. >> you just lost both of your breasts. you had to freeze your eggs. i mean just a little about what it's like dating after breast cancer. >> i was on first dates. who tries to date, by the way when they're going through >> 26-year-olds. >> 26-year-olds. of course. and i'm like out on a date with my wig. i'll never forget and this guy was like, babe, you have the most beautiful hair and i'm like, huh. that's awkward. >> now almost a year and a half since her diagnosis, olivia has ditched her wig and returned to the dance studio with a new motto. live strong. >> who do you see now when you're dancing and looking in those mirrors?

warrior princess is who i see. >> she kept waiting to go back to who she was and she realized she didn't want to. >> a warrior princess. i know it was very important to do this story. our senior medical editor dr. jen ashton joins us now. tell us how this affects younger women with breast cancer. >> well, robin, you know, we know that breast cancer does affect younger women. it's less common than in older women but it can then tend to more aggressive and can be diagnosed at more advanced stages, so that really underscores the importance we heard in this piece of knowing your body, if you notice something like a lump, any skin changes, discharge from the nipple or rarely pain, see your doctor and be persistent. no one knows your body like you do. >> that's right. be persistent. with all of these confusing headlines now, jen, saying you should wait till you're 45 or 50 that wouldn't have worked for me or for robin and i know my

getting tested in their 20s. what is out there? what are the options for younger women? >> well, you have to distinguish between what we do to screen the general population and what we do in terms of imaging for a diagnosis. but in our arsenal of screening and testing, we have sonogram. we have, of course, mammogram. there are mris and there's a newer technique called contrast enhanced spectral ma nothing gras if i showing promising results for being more accurate. they're not all for everybody talking to your doctor will tell you which is appropriate for you. be your own advocate. >> dr. jen, thank you as always. >> thank you, amy. you have been tireless. >> thank you, robin. >> going around the country and talking about this. hey, garth brooks.
