defeat overnight. where do you go from here? it's been a generation since someone else was in that office. >> reporter: good morning. a lot of people celebrating and a lot of people asking how is this transition really going to be? is it going to be a smooth one? it will be about two months before paul penzone takes to this office here. he and his wife took to the stage, supporters. they say they really have no clue how smoothly the transition will go because this hasn't happened in 24 years. joe arpaio is not require today meet with penzone and he is not required to make the transition smooth if he doesn't want to. they are going to reach out to other leaders and to the department of justice.

hillary clinton expected to deliver remarks after donald trump won. we have just learned that at 7:30 phoenix time, hillary clinton will be speaking, delivering remarks to staff and supporters. excuse me. and with donald trump winning the presidency, we are watching the markets for you closely. the peso could fall up to 30% according to the research firm capital economics. the central bank will likely call an emergency meeting on monday the peso surged after the fbi cleared hillary clinton of any wrong doing. the stock markets are very emotional. voters in two valley cities decided to keep their incumbent mayors. scottsdale and avondale, close

breaking right now, new information coming in after an arizona police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty. the crime scene is very active right now in show low, where katie conner is live for us right now. there are three different crime scenes? >> reporter: we are at the crime scene where a 15-year-old girl was taken hostage behind me at a cabin at the lake of the woods. the suspect was shot and killed by police at a cabin take a look at the right-hand side of the screen, a mug shot of the suspect. yesterday police say they were responding to a disturbance call when he shot and killed officer darren reed, on the left-hand side of the screen. from there, he led police to a nearby cabin near the lake of the woods, where he took that 15-year-old girl hostage. during six hours of negotiations, police say he sporadically shot at officers.

handle the situation, eventually leading to officers shooting and killing him. several police officers back here live working the scene. as for the officer who was killed, he'd been with show low police since 2006. of course our thoughts and prayers going out to the community and their families. katie conner, abc 15 news. let's talk about the most accurate forecast. as you're getting ready to head temperatures in the 60s and 70s across the valley. most of us in the 60s, including phoenix down to 68 now, 66 in mesa and 64 for goodyear. the winds we're feeling right now are keeping those temperatures a little milder this morning, coming in out of the east about 5 to 15 miles an

door, and it's going to stay breeze i through the day today with gusts peaking between 20 and 25 miles an hour. stronger winds to the south, so watch for pockets of blowing dust d especially if you're traveling south of the valley. we'll stay in the 60s for a few hours, through act 8:00 this morning, so through the morning drive. after that we'll gradually warm. then the 80s set in after lunchtime, temperatures vernally topping out at 85 degrees. that's 5 degrees lower than yesterday, but we should stay away from the record high, not seeing those 90s. how much further temperatures trend down this week, coming up next. . u.s. 93 southbound has been shut down this morning but this was just reopened. this is north of state route 71, and you can use that

this is near 16th street and highland, a car right into that scaffolding there. we're told power for several residents went on and off for several minutes. the power has been restored and fortunately no serious injuries. 24 hours ago, we saw the lines in the polls and a lot of problems for those who just want their voes allison rodriguez is live at the county recorder's office trying to get answers this morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan. it was a long night for the maricopa county recorder's office, and even the recorder herself, helen purcell knows things didn't run smoothly. some computers started acting up and caused even more delays. this was near 51st avenue and osborne, and the issue here was there were two computers

one of them went down and then the other started freezing up. so you have thousands of people voting and only one computer, causing major delays. the recorder there, helen purcell, did say she wasn't expecting that issue. >> we tested every one of them before they went out. that's why it's always like, what happened there? because is it user error? and some of that could be the case, not necessarily. >> reporter: still she says they received less than half the calls for troubleshooting that they got back in 2012. >> the long lines may not have been a surprise for secretary of state, voters in arizona setting several new records including permanent early

possibly a record number of ballots cast. >> we plan on being there all night, until the very last county reports. >> still waiting, though, thanking those who worked hard to keep the ban in place on ballot harvesting. democrats argue the ban hurt minority voters. >> and with budget increases and bond issues on the ballot, voters approved more money for schools in scottsdale, tempe more election coverage now. it was expected to be one of the most contentious races the state, but democrat tom o'halleran defeated paul babeu in district one. he says the first issue we'll focus on is ethics. >> i believe that the american people are sending a strong signal to government that they want us to work together and

respectfully, and we are not out there just for big money corporations. we are out there to fight for them. >> in district two the incumbent is leading. in district four, and voters shut down prop 205 at the polls, rejecting the legalization of recreational pot. it failed by a narrow margin, despite millions in advertising spent on both sides. in 2010 voters allowed medical marijuana in the state, recreational a no go this time. the recreational pot issue this election passed by more than 10% in california.

update we'll come right back to it. we have upper 60s and even 70s across the valley, so a bit of a milder start. we have breezes across the valley keeping temperatures in the 70s in deer valley, scottsdale and glendale. those stronger breezes tend to keep the temperatures higher. when we have clear skies and light breezes, those temperatures cool off. we have a milder start to the day and it will be another warm one today but yesterday. the breezes are also beginning to help usher in slightly cooler air. 68 right now, breezy. by 10:00 we're in the mid-70s, still breezy. by lunchtime we have stronger winds, gusting at times 20 to 25 miles an hour as temperatures warm into the low 80s. today's high 85 degrees, 5 degrees lower than yesterday. we should stay below the record

yesterday. we'll be several degrees below that today. we have a storm system to our southeast but you won't get any rain from it, just the winds we're feeling. today 85, tomorrow still a bit breezy with highs in the low 80s. then temperatures stay in the low 80s as we go into the weekend. we are tracking another storm system that moved across on sunday. i'll show you whether anybody in the state has a shot of rain. heading valley, we are starting to see delays on the 101. they are very minor at this point, isolated to about 19th avenue. this is eastbound. that's making the desert drive time about 8 minutes from the i- 17 to 51. north valley is looking great but by the time you hit about camelback or so it slows down. 17 southbound near the i-10

. it is 6:30. before we get to the latest on the elections, i want to talk about something important here. we have breaking news coming into the live desk. a show low police officer, one of our heroes, shot and killed in the line of duty. the manhunt for his killer plays out overnight while you were sleeping and katie conner is live from the lake of the woods resort. what can you tell us about this officer? >> repo reed has been with show low police and before that worked with the sheriff's office. now his own officers are investigating his death behind me. the suspect, daniel erickson, shot and killed officer reed in an rv down the road yesterday. he then led police to a cabin nearby where he took a 15-year- old girl hostage. for six hours they tried to negotiate with him but he kept

eventually returned fire, killing him. we are told the cabin behind all the trees here at the lake of the woods resort, and the 15- year-old hostage was rescued and is safe. there were no injuries but she was taken to the hospital for precaution. >> our thoughts with that officer's family for sure. now back home, we have a air 15 was over the scene and moments ago, look at this fire presence there off 90th street. it appears to be a business plaza, more than a dozen crews on the scene there. we are trying to find out if anyone was injured. we are covering that for you. iris? many of you may be getting ready to head to the bus stop. temperatures are mild across

breezy morning. we'll feel the winds about 5 to 15 miles an hour to start the day and we'll keep those conditions into this afternoon as temperatures warm back into the 80s. you may not want to spend a lot of time fixing your hair today. we'll talk about how long the winds will stick around, coming up in a few minutes. we have had a couple of crashes here in the valley this morning. all of them have pretty much cleared out. but we still have delays on the 10 right now. 30 minutes desert drive time for eastbound to the min mini stack. we'll have a closer look at the i-17 coming up in a few minutes. four people are dead this morning after a head-on crash on u.s. 93 north of wickenburg there en route to las vegas. the northbound lanes are closed at this moment.

>> reporter: penzone takes off in mid-january but what's going to happen to the big joe arpaio inflatable balloon? one person in the group says they will probably send that to joe arpaio. another long-time incumbent, john mccain was elected to another term in the senate. nick ciletti, people are wondering how this work, given his rocky relationship with donald trump. >> reporter: i think that is a perfectly legitimate question as we wake up this morning. i'll tell you senator mccain, when giving his victory speech last night, said that he would work with everybody including president-elect donald trump. just to give you a quick history, we know these two haven't been best buddies over the last 18 months or so.

said mccain wasn't a war hero because he was captured. despite that, mccain told me in an interview that he would support whoever the republican nominee was, even if it was donald trump. last month with those access hollywood tapes, mccain rescinded his support for donald trump. but now it kind of seems like he's willing to work with him. as hard as i ever have, use all my knowledge and experience and relationships, and extend an open hand to our new president and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to solve our problems together. >> reporter: once again, this will be mccain's sixth term in office. we'll have to wait until january to see how this all

state senate, republicans have 15 seats and democrats have 12. republicans lost a couple seats in the state house but still maintain a majority. the dow futures are taking their biggest plunge since 2008, nearly a thousand points. it's built back a little bit but many experts weren't ready for the drop. >> markets were caught a little bit off guard by brexit and they have been caught as much off guard by this. >> the experts say the effects on the market will be volatile but short-term. they are always emotional, the markets that is. let's look live at the area south of the valley where we

pockets of blowing dust again. keep that in mind if you're traveling down to tucson, wind gusts in southern arizona up to 35 miles an hour today. that could pick up. we'll feel breezes in the valley too, with gusts near 20 to 25 miles an hour. we are feeling the breezes right now and that's keeping temperatures mild. down to 68 degrees and we'll see stronger winds around midday with temperatures in the low 80s by lunchtime. today's high 85 sunny and warm and dry day, still above average. temperatures will be trending down in the seven-day forecast. i'll show you that coming up in a few minutes. we have an update on the deadly crash on u.s. 93. this has been shut down and everything is back open there, so shouldn't find any trouble spots with that part of the drive this morning. i-17 around the durango curve, it's pretty slow right now.

. welcome back. several races in the valley have not been called. >> one of the problems, there are tens of thousands of ballots yet to be counted. some folks are frustrated, understandably so this morning. allison rodriguez is live at the county recorder's office. >> reporter: they are not even going to start counting those ballots until tomorrow. we'll show you the parking lot here, employees here. they are still gathering and processing a lot of mail-in ballots dropped off at the polls. we have learned up to 200,000 early ballots were terned in on election day, on top of about 170,000 early ballots that were still being processed. as you can imagine, the tabulation is going to take some time. workers have to go through one

signatures. we haven't seen counting yet, which has some people frustrated. and problems at the polls contradicted to the long lines. >> quite a lot of people here tonight were doing provisional voting and not in their correct district. i heard them saying the office where they take care of who's registered where has made several mistakes. >> reporter: they are going to separate and sort counting those ballots. they hope to finish at least 50,000 of them today. one race we can't call yet ironically, the maricopa county recorder's office. after long lines during the election in march, incumbent helen purcell was challenged

disneyland. californiana have voted to ban plastic bags. stores are banned from handing out the single use bags but they can sell recycled paper bags for a minimum of 10 cents. the governor signed the ban in 2014 but a referendum forced this issue on to the ballot. and this morning investigators are looking into what sparked this big fire in phoenix. air 15 is over that scene near 26th we're told propane tanks were here and up to five structures have caught fire here in addition to power lines. planning for a proposed highway moving forward, even though funding is not secured yet. a dot and the federal highway administration are working on the 40-mile span. and fry's is hosting a hiring

veterans today. they are looking for full-time and part-time positions and several types of openings include chefs, pharmacy techs, courtesy clerks and even positions in management. don't dust off the skis yet because the opening is delayed because of warm weather. the snow bowl was supposed to open friday, the earliest date ever for the resort. that's now pushed back and they are hoping to open no 18th. and it's been a warm morning in the valley, down to 68 degrees right now. we are off to a warm and mild start in spots, clear skies across the state here as we kick off the day. breezes sticking around through the day, too, winds about 5 to 15 miles an hour. those are helping keep the temperatures milder to start

. we are following the latest on officer darrin reed, who was killed yesterday. the suspect then held a 15-year- old girl hostage for six hours. with him but he was shot and killed by police. happening now, sheriff's deputies in maricopa county searching for an escaped inmate in phoenix. this is 25-year-old michael hoffman, who kicked a window out of a jail transport van near 35th avenue and lower buckeye. there is a big police presence in that area. the biggest headline of the

of course he's the chair of the senate armed services committee. he and trump haven't been friendly over the last few months. in january we'll see how that goes. look at these live images from air 15 now, the aftermath of that large fire near 26th street and thomas. up to five structures catching fire in addition to the power lines. still a big place there. mid-80s today, breezy and temperatures will continue to trend down from here. low 80s as we head into our friday, morning temperatures heading into the weekend nice too, 50s to 60s with highs in the 80s. for now no signs of rain returning to the forecast. at least not for the next seven days. we have areas of dust down to the south and winds will be gusting stronger down there.
