. all right. good morning everybody. it is 5:00 on a sunday. >> happening right now on abc 15 mornings, a heartbreaking story out of chandler this morning. a mom killed crossing the street while her two young daughters with her two young daughters. why the driver involved is waking up behind bars this morning. >> reporter: i'm in phoenix, election workers coming back into work today. we'll let you know why, coming up. >> it has been five days since donald trump was elected president. and anti-trump protesters not letting you, taking to the streets across the nation. we'll hear what groups in phoenix are saying. >> and killed in the line of duty. a police officer will be laid to rest today. details about officer reeds's procession and his funeral. of course we know that community hurting this morning.

for waking up with us. i want to switch gears before we get to all of that news. allison you're staying on top of that most accurate forecast. >> things are going to be looking pretty nice as we get on in through the day. this morning we are going to deal with those cooler overnight temperatures. 63 degrees is where we're waking up to right now at phoenix sky harbor. no measurable winds right now. you see your humidity and dew points in the 40s. those will continue to dry out throughout the day. your planner looks like this. 60s throughout the morning. by lunchtime, a nice conditions, i think. mid to upper 70s across the valley with some clouds in the sky. then in the afternoon we continue to get arch, above warmer temperatures. by kickoff, 82 degrees. it's going to be warmer. we'll break down these temperatures hour by hour coming up for you in just a few minutes. >> okay. thank you. right now thoughts and prayers for a two and three year old list in the serious

chandler. this happened at ray road and college. the kid's mom sadly was killed. police say a driver hit the 35-year-old woman while they were all crossing the street yesterday. that driver behind bars this morning for causing death by a vehicle while driving on the suspended license. >> preliminary information indicates that they had the walk sign and that the light was red when the driver came through. we haven't confirmed that yet. we're still sorting that out through witnesses, but the first two witnesses we talked to coir >> so heartbreaking. the driver stayed on scene. police say impairment and speed do not appear to be factors this morning but they are still investigating. >> well, the election may be over, but right here in arizona, the ballots are still being counted, leaving the face of some up in the air including the election recorder herself, helen purcell. marielle len is joining us from the county recorder's office. this has been going on for days, but how many do we have left to count at this point.

about 185,000 votes still inside the reporter's office left to count. it has been six ds since you mentioned since tuesday's election. now there is also about 55,000 provisional ballots left to research. and this can change the outcome of some races. for one, helen purcell as you mentioned who is in charge of counting all of these votes. she's up for re-election as county recorder. thla trailing by $11,000. recreational marijuana also hangs in the balance. we're going to have an update on where that election -- or that race stands at 5:30. meanwhile, election workers are expected to report to work at about nine a.m. this morning to begin counting all of those ballots. in phoenix, abc 15 news.

of that commotion. it was the fourth night in a row for anti-trump protests across the nation. and it seems they're only getting bigger and bigger. this one happening in indianapolis. two officers hurt there and at least seven protesters arrested. officials saying the officers were hurt when those protesters threw rocks at them. they are said to be doing okay this morning. coast to coast, these protests going through the night. arrested here you have portland oregon -- and here you have part lon oregon. las vegas, several arrests there. several thousands of people marching in los angeles and washington, d.c. and here as well as new york city and chicago. protests even starting to spill across the border too. get this, in mexico city, dozens of people gathered there expecting a wave of deportations. >> those rallies not letting up in the valley. a group of protesters making their voices heard at asu's main campus. their message as been it has been all week.

of -- outcome of this election. we asked since trump will be in office and into one challenged the legitimate, what are these people actually protesting. >> people are very fearful right now that their lives don't matter as much as they did on tuesday morning. i'm la tee mow, i wonder if my life matters to donald trump. that's the real question i have to ask. >> overall it was a peaceful protest. by the looks of crowd, we think at least two hundred people sh >> we saw that amount of people at the state capital before taking to the streets. >> [ chanting ] >> yeah, that group marching from the capital to downtown phoenix, chanting "not my president". we're told several groups organized that rally. at one point protesters broke into small groups to share their thoughts profit election. >> i believe that human rights, civil rights are human rights r i believe we have the right to be here.

built on immigrants. >> well, dps troopers were also on scene to ensure everybody stayed safe. in other valley news, we now have a face to go with the name of the man arrested for a road rage crash in scottsdale. this is the mug shot of the man accused of ramming his car into several other vehicles including a patrol car. detectives telling us they had to rush moses to the hospital. that's after he tried to take his own life after he was arrested. we're told alcohol was a factor in all now to a crime alert affecting at least a dozen families in glendale. vandals shooting out car windows. his car window was shot out while it was sitting in his driveway. police tell them that there could be upwards of a dozen other cars with the same damage in the same area. >> we're awake and up and around the house, and this happens.

that happened right outside your happen. it's really frustrating. >> thankfully for him, though, they did catch it on the camera security cameras. so if you have any information, please call police. caught on video, a scary crime coincidently on halloween. take a good look. police need to find the guy in the hat. they say he stole an item from home depot. police say he flashed a gun at the clerk before taking off in his car. silent witness could use your tips. well, meantime in phoenix, detectives they're still looking for the heartless gun man who left a man shot. police have been out there canvassing the area for leads. right now they can't get any information from the victim since he's in the hospital in pretty bad shape, too. we're told he was shot several times. no word on a motive. some developments this morning, a convicted killer now aaccused of faking his mental

second trial right near arizona. a judge saying craig jacobson can stand trial for the death of christina martinez. the court found jacobson was pretending to be incompetent. he was is first convicted for the murder of nevada singer and dancer gin gee rios. his wife helping to find the body in arizona. shots fired, terrifying words to make your heart stop. that was the scene for hundreds of shoppers at an upstate new york mall, more than one hundred officers searching the mall for a gunman but still haven't found anybody. investigators say people heard shots near the apple store. after reviewing video, though, they believe a confrontation happened between two men. both of them ran off. no reports of any injuries. about 250 stores were evacuated. the mall is expected to be reopen later this morning. well, we have lost four americans, two of them contractors to a taliban attack in afghanistan. 16 others are recovering after

airfield. the taliban claims it's been planning this for months. hundreds of thousands leaflets dropped from the sky on the city of mosul. they includes instructions of people living in that city be ready to attack isis as forces continue to take back the city from militants. it also gives residents an update on the progress that's been made so far. high security in paris this weekend for a sting concert. it jus today's one year anniversary of paris terror attacks. 130 people lost their lives that night in the attack linked to isis. two of the attackers have never been identified either. police facing pressure now from the survivors who say the investigation is dragging on. memorial ceremonies will be held around the world today for the victims of that paris attack. just this morning, french president visited each of the seven attack sites.

outside and placed a wreath outside the suicide bombings that marked the beginning of those attacks. a final good-bye here in arizona. friends, family, fellow officers and all of us preparing to say good-bye to fallen officer darren reed. >> officer reed was shot and killed on tuesday in a senseless act of violence. he was set to retire a funeral is planned for tomorrow starting at 1:00 p.m. at show low. we'll have all of the dedetails in a live stream of that procession and funeral up on abc15.com as we mentioned to our thoughts and prayers are with his family this morning and of course the people of show low the and police department there. let's go ahead and switch gears this morning. talk about your most accurate forecast again. we know a lot of you have plans to go out this weekend. you'll like it. mostly clear and warm for us today. cooler in the morning, in the 60s, we climb in the 70s sitting in -- in the mid-70s by 7:00. the warm up starts to get to us in the afternoon.

. all right. this just into the newsroom right now. a powerful earthquake hitting new zealand. according to the u.s. geological survey this was a magnitude 7.4. the it stuck near christ church

recovering from a quake in 2011. that one leaving 185 people dead. there are a lot of after shocks still happening there and it's too early to know if anybody has been hurt or if there's any major damage. but we'll continue to follow this all morning long. again, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake hitting new zealand this morning. arizona has some of the strictest drinking and driving laws on the books but drivers still aren't getting the message. we're one of the highest when it comes to deaths due relate to alcohol. she wants to remind drivers that arizona has a zero tolerance policy. so even a sip of wine which would put you under the legal limit could still get you a dui, which is going to cost you big. >> the average dui is ten thousand dollars, which is unbelievable. you have fines and bail fees and ignition interlock and so many different costs. >> so she created a website. it's a free resource for anybody who gets a dui. at the end of the day, though,

are lighting up. they report cigarette smoke -- smoking rates have hit an all-time low. researchers say the number of smokers dropped about 15% to 47 million. although the cdc is happy with less smokers they say more antitobacco action is still needed. they say nearly half of all cancer diagnoses are linked to tobacco use. the university of arizona cancer center is increasing its research role. it has been accepted into a national clinical group. that means more involvement in clinical trials and an increase in research capabilities. one of the researchesers says membership means the university's positions will provide input on research studies and see their own ideas included in those new research studies. so a little bit of a feather in the cap of university of arizona. of course we like to see that research increase, one day hopefully finding a cure. let's talk about your most accurate forecast this morning here. i know you had some plans

was it a little bit warm for you? how did you take it? >> it was good. i went -- did some errands with my sister. >> yeah? >> yeah. it was good. it wasn't too bad. >> it was a little bit warm if you were sitting outside for a little while. i was at a baby shower yesterday. it could get a little bit toasty. we are above average temperatures for this time of year. the good news is there is a cooldown on the way, we have to get through a warm-up beforehand. 63 degrees right now currently at phoenix sky harbor here. your dew points are right now. your humidity there, too. no measurable winds this morning. -- right now i should say at this i am too. your current temperatures across the valley are mostly in the 50s and 60s right now. 61 in gilbert, 60 in mesa. 60 in lavine. currently sitting at 55 in peoria. under mostly clear skies. those valley wind speeds, you can see pretty light there, up to ten miles an hour.

freedom area, we'll be very warm today. 84 degrees is what what we're going to top out. your uv index is going to be moderate. your air quality pretty good. no other weather alerts. now rain chances. we'll stay pretty dry even though we have clouds streaming in for us today. as we look at future cast, going to go ahead and push this in through tonight. we will start to clear up throughout the evening as we take this into tomorrow morning, we're keeping things clear for the morning commute and even throughout the day tomorrow. it's a we're going to be staying pretty clear across the state. so that's some good news there. we'll be sitting under some here that's bringing us some warmth. by 10:00 a.m. in the 70s there, really nice throughout the morning under mostly clear skies. 81 by 1:00. we are going to get warmer there before we slowly get back down in the 70s by 6:00. but those overnight lows still saying a little bit on the cooler side. 67 degrees by 9:00 p.m. so, yeah, things are going to be looking a little bit cooler

stroll or something like that. 83 in scottsdale. 84 for us in glendale. keeping in mind that average is 77 degrees. so we are going to be about seven degrees above average for today across the valley. across the state, more above average temperatures as well. we're really, really nice up north, 70s in pay son, al dough in a. but we will be warm in those spots we typically would see out to the west of look how warm yuma is getting. very warm there. 85 in bend today. we talked about the cardinals game going on today taking on the 49ers in glendale. by kick off, 83 degrees. and we get a little bit warmer as we get on in through the game. by the second half we will start to see the temperatures trend downward which is good news. that's the hope right, they can do it. here's the look at the seven day forecast. we get warmer, 86 degrees by tomorrow with those clear skies.

downtown. when is this work expected to begin today? >> reporter: you know, they're going to report here at about 9:00 a.m., nick. inside the recorder's office here, that pile of ballots continues to get summarily, but they're still thousands and thousands of votes to count yet. now the maricopa county recorder's office say they have about 185,000 early ballots left to count. and about 55,000 provisional ballots. they still need to research. wepo recorder helen purcell earlier this week. >> it's not unusual this happens after every election. i think if you look at jurisdictions around the country, it happens in all yourself dicks. they're not finished on election night. -- jurisdictions. they're not finished on election night. >> reporter: with those updated numbers to legalize recreational marijuana hangs notice ballots. based in the recorder's office supporters -- they're about 30,000 votes away from seeing it

marijuana haven't conceded yet. they say they want to make sure that every vote is counted and it is a close race for them. now our web writer clayton clapper just broke down those votes. it's on our website am and according to him, out of these 185,000 ballots, 185 immediate to be yes in order to pass that prop. lye in phoenix, abc 15 news. well now to trump tower which has been buzzing with president-elect aides. donald trump back in that building today trying to come up with a cabinet before inauguration day. the protesters though, they were outside the building, along with controversial filmmaker michael moore. he actually got into the tower with the camera crew and he asked to see mr. trump. but as you probably guessed, the secret service quickly stepping in there and they asked him to leave. the president-elect has a lot to be thankful and a lot of people to thank for it. and we are hearing he may be doing that by taking a victory tour to the state that's elected

that is according to one of his aides. but there's no word on the timeline if this is actually going to happen. one thing you could count on from trump this entire election season is that he would tweet a lot, right. >> but don't count on seeing many tweets from president trump in an interview with 60s minutes he said he's going to be, quote, very restrained. it won't be easy, he admits social media helped him win races in states where he was out fenced. this election showed how limited the influence of political mega donors is. this is the second presidential cycle since the supreme court allowed them to write eight figure checks to political super pac. even though much of the gop's money went to his opponents in the primaries, he still beat them on the democratic side, bernie sanders managed to fight hillary clinton far longer than many people expected. that's despite the fact that much of his money came in from those small donations. compared to clinton's well-oiled fund-raising machine. in the end, trump beat clinton in the general election, even

in terms of fund-raising. well, megan kel whether i in her own words. the fox news anchor telling all, not just about her life and career, but also about this election. now kelly is saying in her new book that donald trump tried to get preferential treatment from other journalists including her. he claims she tried to give her a free hotel say. he may have gotten a predebate about her first question asking him about those words that he had used against women. the book is called settle more. it hits store shelves this tuesday. second of state john kerry standing by his position on climate change. this morning, kerry says he's going to work hard to make sure the u.s. does follow the landmark paris aagreement to fight global warming until president obama leaves office january 20th. all of this coming as environmental act visits enter a period of uncertainty with president-elect donald trump. trump has previously said climate change is a hoax. did james comey cause hillary clinton to lose the

in a conference call clinton says comey's actions delivered a double whammy to her campaign. clinton said the first letter that comey send to congress halted the momentum she had after the debate. the second letter from comey which exonerated clinton just fired up trump's base despite the loss and unhappiness of comey's letter, clinton did call on her supporters to keep moving forward and fighting for their causes. this morning, in south korea a scandal of presidential proportions. hundreds of thousands of people filled t news breaks of that country's leader being questioned by prosecutors this week. president park is accused of using her influence to put pressure on companies to donate to foundations that a close friend of hers actually controls. all right. now let's go to the border battle. the feds saying agents are being moved to south texas from arizona and california. now this is to help process the spike in immigrants who have been caught after illegally

and san diego, will be temporarily reassigned to the rio grande valerie. agents working another portion are going to join them as well. those extra agents will help with screening and processing the immigrants taken into custody along the border. many of them are unaccompanied children and families. everybody is okay but the faa is now in. cha of figuring out why this plane had to make an emergency landing northeast of the valley. that plane went down in a field about seven miles east of two people on board were the instructor and a student. and again, they're going to be okay. this weekend also marking the 15th anniversary of a deadly american airlines crash in queens, no. you may remember this one. mayor commemorating the events for the victims. that plane hitting turbulence shortly after takeoff causing it to go down in a neighborhood killing two hundred 65 people. -- 265 people. the plane was bound for the

doctors without borders rescuing 1400 immigrants trying to escape to europe. groups pulled people from boats, rafts and even a barge. this has become the world's deadliest migration route so far this year. people aren't only on wildfire watch, they have a major health concern in north carolina this morning. the smoke from all of those fires. manufacture them are believed to be arson. right now people are urged to wear masks. if they plan to be doing those outdoor activities. the suspicious fires are also impacting georgia, homeowner both states have been evacuated. in all, there are about two dozen fires burning in that state right now. a police ambush and hopefully a speedy recovery for an officer in alaska. he was attacked early yesterday morning. that officer was responding to a theft call when he was shot by the gunman. that man died in a shootout. there is dash cam video of the attack and police are saying they're going to release it later on this week. meantime in idaho officers shot

hospital. however his fellow brother still hospitalized and in pretty rough shape too, the two were attacked friday afternoon while looking for a shooting suspect. that gunman tied in the shootout. a police k9 was also shot and lost a lung. but we are hearing that he took his first walk this morning and is going to be recover. this is the latest package thief spotted in the valley. we haven't heard if she's been caught. so keep an eye out for her. this happened in the moon valley area. inside that box this woman swiped a christmas gift for the homeowner's daughter. graffiti in the wall in now, the community not having it. people in durham coming together to scrub away the paint that somebody wrote this message, they say black lives don't matter. and neither does your vote. then somebody else tried to paint over a few letters so it would say black lives do matter. but that wasn't enough for these neighbors. >> it's only intention is, you know, to be bothersome.
