i had, good morning. 5:00 on a sunday. thanks for joining us. >> i'm allison rodriguez. just ahead on abc 15 mornings, a family is speaking out after their loved one is shot and killed by police in cos grand. what they have to say -- casa grande. what they have to say about losing their family member. >> a cold case unsolved for decades. the family of brandy myers holding on to hope this morning as a possible suspect heads to court. >> i'm marry ellen resendez in tempe. it is iron man. a day with a lot of information to know. especially if you're out driving around. a lot of road closures. i will have them, coming up. >> we have all that news to get to and more, but first, we are going to talk about your most accurate forecast, because nick could be tracking some

raindrops, i was looking on twitter, we saw some raindrops yesterday. could we see that again today? >> ale little bit of scattered drizzle. >> yes. >> but we could see heavier rain later on today. the good news is, for the ironman, it doesn't look like it will interfere with that. take a look at this. 66 degrees right now. at phoenix sky harbor. so pretty mild morning. definitely warmer than this time yesterday. and this is how the rest of that seven-day forecast, or i should say most accurate forecast is going to look for today at least. the 50s an 60s. and after that, we are going to moderate to the mid-70s, as more clouds move in. our rain chances move up to about a 20%. and then later on, that is when we could see even better rain chances, and also on monday. i will will break down the percentages for everyone, so way, you can plan your day, coming up in a few minutes. meantime allison, you said it. a lot of news to get to. happening now in tempe. hundreds people preparing to compete in the all important ironman race.

do have to expect a lot of closures and road detours because of what is going on. let's go out to tempe where mary ellen is live for us right now and what do people need to know if they're traveling today? >> reporter: well if you're in the tempe area, you will see a lot of these signs here right now, allison. streets closed. by rio solata and tempe beach park. this is a huge event. this is the iron man triathlon. and there are a lot of pa in. and a lot are filtering in right now. about 2800 will be competing in this. and it is going to include a 2.4-mile swim. 112-mile bike ride and then a complete marathon. which is 26.2 miles. all in succession. the athletes will have about 17 hours to complete the event. and ironman arizona has been here since 2005. and as i said, nearly 2800 athletes compete each year. the race this morning is going

and they have already started some of the road closures. let's take a look at the maps. so the swimming won't affect us too much because all of that will be down in tempe town lake. but that bike route, it is going to close down rio solata to mcclintock. and north, and out to mckel ips road. and eastbound to alma school to the bee line highway. the running route, a lot of road closures with this route, all the way to mcclintock. it will go up and just to, almost to the 202, and do are -- they do have some biking paths as they go down, but curry road near mill avenue and college will also be closed. if you are going to be down in this north tempe, south scottsdale area, that is where you are going to see a lot of road closures. if you're heading out of town and heading up that bee line highway, you want to drive very carefully because you will see a lot of cyclists going up that

resendez, abc 10 news. the man killed by casa grande police are speaking out with the family. 48-year-old gabriel parker was killed after a repeated order for him to drop his machete. police say parker was coming at them with a nif and they first used bean bags and a taser. police originally responded to the home for a 911 call of a man trying to hurt himself. the family says they didn't call police. and parker was shot in front of his family. to leave. they were making things worse. not to do it. not to shoot him. >> the officers involved had been identified as bryan martinez, jeremy ybarra and efren lujan. now, they have been placed on administrative duties per department policy. and vps has taken over the investigation. a plea for help. the family of a missing girl asking for somebody to come forward. so they can help solve the case behind the disappearance of brandy myers. abc 15's chris grow has more

myers. >> reporter: under the dim light of candles, the fight for brandy myers continues more than 20 years after she went missing. but for her sister kristen thailen, time is running out. >> my life has been devastated. over losing my sister. and i lost most of my family in the process. because we all imploded on ourselves. >> reporter: myers went missing back in 1992. the 13-year-old girl with blond hair and big glasses, she was last seen in the sunny slope neighborhood collecting money for a fundraiser but she never came back. >> horrible. always. probably every day i think about her. and when i grew up and had kids of my own, like it affected how i raised them. >> there was a glimmer of closure last year, police announced a possible break through in the case when they dyed 'ed alleged canal killer brian miller as a possible suspect. no physical evidence connecting

there is someone out there who can help police and she won't stop until they come forward. >> please don't sit on it until your death bed. come forward. and give us some peace. >> phoenix police suspect foul play was involved in myers' disappearance. reporting in phoenix, chris grow, abc 15. developing right now, out of tucson. police asking for help after a man was stabbed and killed at a bus stop. the victim just identified as joseph lundberg. officers say lundberg and another man were the 0 other man stabbed him. and then took off. lundberg died at the scene. officers have not released a suspect description. caught on video now, three women wanted by phoenix police for stealing someone's credit cards. and then using them to buy merchandise. this happened early last month, at a parking garage at fourth street and indian school. police say someone broke into a car and they took a 29-year-old woman's wallet. well, within 24 hours, the stolen credit cards were used at a walmart in glendale and a

if you have any information, you are urged to call silent witness, 480-witness. a lot of people are asking, how could this happen? investigators in texas trying to figure out how first responders missed a toddler in the back of a crashed suv. now, several agencies responding to the accident but somehow no one saw the 3-year- old girl in the back who was thrown to the car's floorboard. she was later found by the towing company. and she was rushed to the hospital. now, abc 15 update, in a crash that killed a valley mom and sent her two babies to the hospital. this one so sad. the 3-year-old boy hurt last weekend in chandler now out of the hospital according to the family's go fund me. pamela hasslebocker and her two kids were in the cross walk at the time when they were hit by a driver who ran a red light. pamela later died. the toddler is now out of the hospital. and good news there. audrey, the 2-year-old, still in a coma this morning.

hit them is now in custody. now, to a breaking news update. we have learned a man has died after being hit by a truck, this all happening in peoria. it happened near grand avenue and 75th avenue. police say gaven hagerty stepped into oncoming traffic or was walking in the roadway when he was hit. he later died at the hospital. the driver who hit him is okay. police don't believe impairment played a role. covering a border the border patrol is ordered to improve conditions at detention facilities in our state. the judge is saying migrants are being kept in crowded cold cells without proper vetting. the temporary order does require the border patrol's tucson mats to have clean mats and clean blankets held more than 12 hours and must be allowed to wash or clean themselves. immigrants had complained that the holding facilities in arizona are unsanitary and

signed, seal and delivered durale during the holidays. instead of a package, one wisconsin mailman delivers a crook to the cops. two men walk up and grab a package from a mail carrier. witnesses say he didn't miss a beat, he took after them, tackling the one with the package. >> i just saw these two men kind of going back and forth and one was a mail man and screaming 911 so i called 911. >> a resident in a nearby elderly housing complex ran across to help. residents say they are proud how quickly their community jumped in to give them a hand. trending now, a little taste to celebrate a birthday. seems harmless. >> anything but a party at a state capitol in louisiana. one state representative brought in a bikini cake from a fellow state representative that came with a note that says he likes his cake and likes it too. and left it in the break room and female colleagues were not pleased. >> and they say it is not a locker room or a bachelor

woman here, this was a very bad decision on his part. >> these are legislators. like we can't allow for this type of rhetoric to become normalized within the legislature. these are elected leaders. >> well, the man who brought the cake in said he never wanted to offend anybody, and we have brought it any place that he worked. okay. that's how he feelings. >> it causes some controversy this morning. okay, 10 past the hour. state troopers working to keep you safe. expect heavy patrols on the highways during the thanksgiving holiday period. this is a live look at the i- 17. the section between north phoenix and flagstaff, it is one of several so-called safety corridors that dps is planning to patrol. and focus on the i-10 between phoenix and tucson. and state route 87 between mesa and payson. extra troopers will be out wednesday through next sunday. and looking for speeders. impaired drivers. tired drivers. and also distracted drivers. many plan on flying

this is video from last thanksgiving, and airport officials predicting the airport is going to be busier than usual. starting tuesday. and through the monday after the holiday. but they say the busiest days they are going to be wednesday, and next sunday, and so to beat the crowd, airport managers suggest using the sky train station at washington, and 44th street. >> oh, joy. i will be flying back from pennsylvania on sunday. >> sunday. >> we will see how busy it. >> and i'm surprised they didn't catch me remember them shooting everybody in lines for last year in thanksgiving. the temperatures are starting to feel like fall. maybe like winter too in the coming days. >> you want to get ut under the blankets and get cozy. the incoming rain. here we go. we break down the percentages between today and tomorrow. a 60 to 70% chance of getting some rain. there are some parts of the valley that are favored over others. i will talk about that, plus a

some breaking health news right now. officials just issuing some new guid prevent strokes or heart attacks. >> abc 15's katie ramle found millions of adults with no signs or symptoms, may now wonder if they should each take them, in this -- even take them in this morning's rally for red. >> new guidelines now in the fight against stroke, and heart attack. and the nation's expert panel for preventive medicine is now recommending all americans between 40 and 75 consider statins, if your consider says you have an elevated risk of

every 24 hours she has to pump antibiotics in her arm and the monitor she carries is the only thing keeping this bacteria in her right ear from spreading. >> if it becomes resistant to that, there is nothing else to treat it. that's it. and then eventually, it will go into my bloodstream. >> reporter: she says there weren't any advisories when she went swimming either. her only hope to stop this bacteria is to have a surgery to remove the infected bone before the antibiotics stop working. and stay this holiday. one of my favorite snacks but there are new concerns about listeria. and they are forcing a recall. the dipping company says some of the hummus and spreads may have been contaminated. the affected products were made before november 8 at a plant where listeria was found. and the best buy dates are through january 23, 2017, if you have one of these spreads, take it back to the store. you will get a refund. 5:16. have you ever wanted to go on a

for weather forecasts, the goes- r sat light launched from cape canaveral, delayed for a short time because of a technical issue but launched yesterday without an issue. and one of three satellites being built to replace the aging weather satellite system. >> we love the weather satellites. they come in handy on days like today when we look at the desert doppler radar to look at what is gock >> you are definitely using all of the tools in the barney bag, or the mary poppins bag. >> we felt raindrops last night. just a few. but that is a preview of what we see later on today. let's get into it this morning. a live look outside with one of our vearl cameras. you can see -- valley cameras. you can see the freeway. that is i think the 10 right there. maybe the 202. 62 in mesa. chandler. 60 in glendale. and 64 in scottsdale. ale little bit of a cool morning. in many parts of the state

45 in page. and 39 in grand canyon, at the grand canyon. and 55 in yuma and 60 this morning in gila bend. a look at the most active forecast and how the temperatures will elevate a bit throughout the morning. we will stay in the upper 50s until 8:00. i think we will get to 61. and 65 by 9:00 and then 69 degrees by 10:00. and today's highs upper 70s by many people. and warm up nicely, and enjoy it while it lasts becauses we will see ale cooldo here is a look at the abc 15 desert doppler. we can see some light scattered showers moving in. i shouldn't call them showers. just kind of drizzle, patches of drizzle, we will call them that. a lot of that probably not making it to the ground but my prediction is probably in the next 12 hours or so, desert doppler will be lighting up. that's what we expect, this first wave of rain, to move in, right around dinnertime. we will show you future cast. fast forward to about midnight. but you can see a lot of the valley already encompassed in that big chunk of rain, we will

we see even more rain, and it gets to be more widespread. especially by about midday. and after that, though, things kind of calm down a little bit. you will see we start to clear pretty nicely tomorrow evening and into tomorrow afternoon. so keep that in mind. a 24 hour thing. and we need the rain though. so we are going to enjoy. it and the breakdown of the storm chances. here in the valley, today, a 50% chance, and by monday, we are going to say 600%. so we will elevate -- 60%. so we will et vate that little bit. the high country has the biggest chance. 50% chance for today. and 80% for tomorrow. snow levels right now are at about 8,000 feet. we are predicting they could lower to about 7,000 feet. and so for the most part, this is going to be a rain event. for most places in the high country. the highest elevations, though, maybe could see some of this switching 0 over to snow. a breakdown of how many inches we expect in the west valley. a trace to a water of an inch. it looks like it is favoring the east valley here. we could see up to three

and greater rainfall amounts in the high country. good news is air quality is in the good range. here is a look at the forecast for the valley at this time cities. mesa gets a 78. 78 in tempe and mid to upper 70s after that. and here is that seven-day forecast. 68 is the high tomorrow. definitely lower temperatures. you can see rain chances up to 600%. after that, we -- 600%. after that he, would start clearing out tuesday and then temperatures moderate where they should be this time of the year allison as we incorporate more sunshine. >> and thanksgiving looks amazing. thanks so much. big game for the ca hours away, too. it has been 39 years. since they have won a game, in minnesota. and they certainly love to change that statistic today right? i think a lot of us would. especially this guy here, are you about to see. larry fitzgerald born and raised in minnesota. he is 0-4. when returning to his hometown. but last week he did feel the need to remind us it is not just the vikings that he struggles with and winless against several other teams in the league as well. >> i haven't won in buffalo.

today's high is 78. we are expecting some rain chances. probably by dinner. i will break down the likelihood of all of that, plus when we can see the best opportunity for some showers. coming up in just a few minutes. >> good idea to stay in and watch the amas then if it is raining. happening now in tempe, hundreds are preparing to compete in the iron man race. makes me feel lazy, doesn't it? >> a little bit. they train amazingly. and expect a lot of road closures and detours because of this. we out to tempe right now where maryellen resendez is taking action for us. and what do people need to know? >> reporter: you know what, you mentioned the road closures and there is a lot of road closures especially down here by tempe beach park. and rio solada. you can see the traffic. this is the traffic just a park right now. we are already seeing early this morning. they started the road closures probably about 3:00 a.m. and this is the traffic. we are off of ash and rio solada right now and these are

president-elect donald trump has a strong platform talking about deporting millions of immigrants. and this is opening a dialogue with the community, allowing the conversations in their own backyards. >> the fears are now, today. why not address them now. >> reporter: for senator miranda, she say her focus is on home, taking care of those here first. >> what i am trying to do now is to protect my community, reassure them that here at home, we have a different leadership. and there is no reason to fear. >> but based on many people who stood up to speak today, they had more concerns than questions. >> i think that there are systemic problems. >> concerns the panel had no problem addressing. >> so thank you for the comments. and i so love the difference in opinion. because that is what makes our america a great place. >> but many didn't speak. simply getting comfortable with the new leadership shaping the valley. >> if i don't say anything, i am absorbing a lot, even being here and absorbing what people are doing and what people are

from queens to manhattan to demonstrate at trump tower. we will not water board. that is the message from senator john mccain. he spoke at the hall fax international security forum in nova scotia there. and mccain saying he doesn't care what president-elect trump said, adding the u.s. will not reinstate water boarding. he says any attempts to bring back harsh interrogation techniques would be challenged in court. and as you may know, mccain was tortured as a prisoner of war during the vietnam war. >> a navy veteran. and a meeting day for president-elect donald trump and the secretary of education possible candidate was there. and retired general james madis who could play a role but the meeting so many people were watching yesterday with mitt romney, trump describing the meeting as quote great and romney is reportedly in the running for secretary of state. even romney was one of the

>> donald trump is a phony. a fraud. >> but here is a disloyal guy. see, he is an elitist. >> his promises are as worthless as a degree from trump university. >> the guy is a stone cold loser. >> yes, you are watching some back and forth banter from when the campaign was still happening. romney says the meeting was all about focusing on the interests of the u.s. allison? the u.s. attorney general promising to step up enforcement of attorney general loretta lynch saying hate crimes have risen nearly 7% in the past year. >> put simply, this work is the right and just thing to do. and i want the american people to know that as long as that work is necessary, the department of justice will continue to carrie it forward. fbi and federal prosecutors are looking into a recent spike in alleged hate crimes and harassment to see if they violate federal law. the southern poverty law center

reports of harassment, intimidation, from the day after the election, through monday, this week. a big payoff for the family of an asu student who lost his life during a bizarre arrest in missouri. brandon elingson died in may of 02014, after he was arrested at a lake for boating while drunk. he was handcuffed, fell off of a trooper's boat, and then drowned. his familile will get a $9 million settlement. that is the civil case. but there is still a criminal case, with an upcoming hearing that is and wildfires still burning across the southeast. crews battling from the ground and air. and working to make sure areas that contained stay that way. this weekend officials in north carolina expect winds to reach 30 miles an hour. and causing those fires to intensify, and possibly spread. crews in the air keeping a constant look at this area, and constantly attacking the flames with water. >> we have about 30,000 gallons pre-mix already, so we are

hard day without stopping. >> the burke fire in that state burning, more than 45,000 acres right now. well, this woman in custody this morning, pinal county deputies saying they tried to pull her over last night and then she took off 90 miles an hour on i-8. and deputies eventually stopping her and according to the sheriff paul bagview, and she got out of the car and took off her shirt and bra and claimed to be jesus. right now, the investigation is under into a deadly officer-involved shooting. this one happened in brooklyn. police saying a man was shot and killed, during some type of fight with police. a male and a female officer, they were called 0 out to a report of a suspicious person. the officers say when they asked for his i.d., a fight broke out and police say the man grabbed one of the officer's metal batons and hit them both in the head. the officers fired killing the man. no names have been released. a tragedy in georgia here,

river in savannah. one of the ramps on the city's river street collapsed sending people into the water. and officials say that firefighter had a medical emergency during the rescue. he passed away at the hospital. rescuers say about 30 people were hurt. including 13 who were hospitalized but they are all expected to be okay. meantime, we have new information on the deadly plane crash in nevda. investigators saying mechanical issues caused the plane to crash after takeoff. all four people on board were killed. the air ambulance plane was taking a heart patient to a utah hospital when it went down in a parking lot. it will be 0 on the -- nobody on the ground was hurt. the ntsb and the faa are both investigating. baby sophia found safe on her eighth day of life. she was found in dallas, on thursday. her father in kansas came home and found sophia's mom shot to death, and the newborn missing. dallas s.w.a.t. executed a search warrant early this morning, it taking two

is going down and do we know right now how many people are expected to attend this event? i imagine a lot. >> reporter: they are estimating about 2800 that will be attending, or at least competing. 2800 people competing in the event. the crowd will be much, much bigger than that. we have been out here since about 4:00 a.m. watching this traffic. and this is the traffic just to park. and it just is like never ending. so you can imagine, just how crowded it is going to be in downtown tempe. and now, this event is it is the iron man event. it is the triathlon. and these athletes have to go through a whole lot just to get ready for this. they will start off with a 2.4- mile swim and we are told when you put the athletes in tempe town lake in somewhat of a washer machine out there. and then a 112-mile bike ride and a full marathon 26.2 miles and 17 hours to actually complete this event. and the racers are going to start here in about 45 minutes. we will get the beginning

and the bike route. take a look at the maps here. road closures around rio solad and tempy town lake. the bike route will close down the area toward mcclintock, north to mckel ips road and eastbound up to alma school and the bee line. that is a 112-mile bike ride so if you happen to be traveling that way, you want to be careful for the cyclists. the running routes closing parts of the park opposite direction. it will be closed almost to mcclintock and then westbound, to priest. and north on priest. to the 202. and it also will be shut down between curry road, between mill avenue, and college avenue. and of course, if you're wanting to see where the road closures are, our assignment desk editor has put them on the web site at abc 15 .com. and you can avoid this area if you're not planning to come down here and cheer your favorite athlete on.

resendez, abc 15 news. >> thank you. taking action for us. thank you. breaking news to get to from overnight. a commuter train derails in india. killing more than 90 people. and jurg 150 more. this -- injuring 150 more. this happened in kampur southeast of new delhi. and more passengers could be trapped inside the wreckage. we are told 14 of the train's 24 cars went off the tracks around 3:00 in the morning. and investigators are looking into what caused this. and meantime, bam here the valley, dps responding to this crash on the i-10 east at pecos. the crash temporarily blocking one lane before crews cleared it out. not sure if anyone was injured in this crash. we are checking on that for you. and another crash involving three cars near broadway and south price. one of the vehicles pretty badly banged up. after it slammed into a road sign. thankfully, we are told, everybody in this crash, allison, is doing okay this morning. well, nick, the family of a

out saying police were too quick to pull the trigger. police telling us they shot and killed 48-year-old gabriel parker after repeated orders for him to drop his machete. police say parker was coming at them with a knife. and they first used bean bags and a taser. police originally responded to the home for a 911 call of a man trying to hurt himself. the family says they did not call police. and parker was shot in front of his family. >> they asked the cops to stop, to leave, things worse. not to do it. not to shoot him. >> well, the officers involved ha been identified as bryan martinez, jeremy ybarra and efren lujan. and they have been placed on administrative duties per department policy. dps has taken over the investigation. 24 years and still no answers. the family of brandy myers now asking for the public's help. for the first time, a vigil was held in her honor. the family wants somebody to come forward who can help solve

light shower activity, then, and into tomorrow morning, and also, so the rush hour, could be a little bit wet, tomorrow, so keep that in mind and the showers become more widespread throughout the day tomorrow, and so keep that in mind also. and i think by tomorrow evening, maybe dinnertime tomorrow, that is when we start to see a lot of this dissipate and the clouds kind of hang around for a little bit tuesday and eventually move on out. here is a breakdown of the rain chances. today in the valley, a 50% chance, and also in the high country, a 50% chance, and tomorrow, just a 60% c here in the valley, but up to an 80% chance, in the high country and i think this is primarily going to be a rain event, and take a look at this. snow level, dropping to about 7,000 feet, by tomorrow night. and some places in the highest, highest elevations, maybe could see some snow out of this. but i think for the most part, even flagstaff, i think this is going to be mostly a rain event, and west valley could pick up to a quarter of an inch, up to three quarters of an inch in the east valley. and this system really favors places like chandler, gilbert, mesa, tempe, keep that in mind

it is kinds of down home and it is like their mother or grandmother used to make. bun one of -- but one of the biggest things that people don't realize is letting your turkey rest. you have your turkey and now everybody wants to eat and take it out of the oven and let's cut it and go. and you should let your turkey rest for 20 minutes or so-so your juices stay intake and then cut it and then your juices are moist. >> and you don't want turkey fatigue. that is not good. >> you don't want that. and that goes into my next thing here. dry that somewhat a lot of people end up having. but sometimes they don't mind, with the grave, it might be okay but there are some ways that you could keep that bird pretty tender and juicy. >> sure. like i said, when it comes out, let it rest. but some foil over top. and i generally say, for a normalle sized turkey about, 20 minutes or so. so put some foil on top and let it keep the heat and let the juices stay in the bird. and then once you do that, you can start cutting it and that way your juices stay intact.

park. the most accurate forecast, by the hour, we will stay in the 60s i think for most of the morning and eventually getting into the 70s, by late morning, early afternoon. and today's high, 78 degrees, above average, and we are expecting rain and also a big cooldown, i am going to time all of this out for you, so you can plan your day, and don't worry, because you got to stick around for it, coming up in a few minutes. nick, it is a test of physical and mental strength. happening now, nearly 3,000 people, they are getting ready to compete in the iron man arizona. lo some pictures from previous iron man races. and the start time is minutes away too. maryellen resendez is joining us live in tempe here. and ma what is the first event in this -- and what is the first event in this competition? >> reporter: well they are going to be staggering them throughout the event and one of first once starting at 6:45 is the swimming in tempe town lake. and what we are told, this is the actual professionals that are coming in here. for the first part of this race. and they will start in a

and 6:45. and lining up and getting ready. and we will pan over and we can see how many swimmers in the bullpen are waiting to hit the water. and now, this is 2.4 miles swim. we are told after this, many will be jumping either on their bikes or doing the run. the run is a 26.2, full marathon. and the bike, the biking is 112 miles. they have about 17 hours, in order to complete all of the events. and i want to take you back to where we are swimming. tempe townak far as lakes goes, it is not a huge lake but we have 3,000 swimmers that are getting ready to jump in the lake. and list ton kyle harry. he has 15 swimmers, he is a trainer out of chandler. he has 15 clients that are participating in the iron man race and this is what he had to say it felt like when he did the iron man. >> 3,000 people. in a wash machine. something like that. there is a lot of people in there. and there are a lot of bumping and they say it is a full

hagerty stepped into oncoming traffic off walking in the roadway. and peoria police say he was taken to the hospital in critical condition and did not make it. the driver of that truck, that hit him is okay this morning. detectives are still investigating why hagerty was in the roadway. >> definitely trying to figure out. because it is not a normal area where somebody would be walking or crossing the roadway. >> and police don't believe that driver was impaired. they say he fully cooperated with the investigation. and there are no arrests or cita and now, to an update about the family of a valley woman killed by crossing the street last weekend. the 3-year-old boy also hurt in the chandler crash. now out of the hospital. that's according to the family's go fund me page. pamela hasslebacker and her two kids were in the cross walk when they were hit by a drive who ran a red light. pamela sadly did not make it. the toddler out of the hospital. and audrey the 2-year-old still in a coma this morning.
