new step to -- phoenix police department alone a new step for your safety. >> some tough decisions. >> she sent out a letter to all officers on the force saying that she's assembled a team to look at the most effective way to move officers and keep the community safe. striking that balance is key. tonight the department down 413 officers is hitting recruitment hard. even with the new recruits the reality is not a lot of exams. you have to factor in the officers who are retiring. that's why the phoenix police department is now assembling a team to look at the force big picture. the chief saying they've been working overtime and using specialty squads to help out with patrol. that's not a long-term solution. they want quality service with the people they have. an estimated 200 detectives could be reassigned and moved to patrol.

bottom line stay away from pumps showing scratches or anything that makes you suspect a thief. what a way to catch a crook. a quick thinking customer helped them out. police say while this guy, phillip pointed a gun at the cashier's face a customer was secretly recording the whole thing on his cell phone. the video so clear they could see a skull emblem on the gun and specific leopard print as he left with the cash another customer yelled out the license plate. that led cops to a stolen car, the gun, and fingerprints that match their guy who's done a lot of jail time. watch your stuff. a rash of purses stolen out of locked calls. mesa police got at least a dozen reports. the victims reporting a black mini van speeding away after. some of the purses were found dumped in another park.
