a somber day in the hiory of san jose. if for the first time ever the city firefighters are turning in their gear this morning. they are the first casualties of dozens of layoffs taking place through the weekend. a fire station is also closing down. teresa garcia is li to show us what is happening. >> reporter: what you've got a lot of somber faces and people giving hugs and firefighters indressing out of thr uniforms to mark the end of their careers so far with san jose. >> first wave of 49 laidof firefighters turned up to their

gear off today. they go home to a great unknown. >> i never thought this would happen. came he with the intention of serving 30 years with a career and to be honest, i'm completely dumfounded right now. >> these two were part of 46 people and three others that lost their jobs because of a budget shortfall. they asked them to give up 10% in wages and pension to close the gap but couldn't reach an agreement. >> i'm disappointed to get to this point, it's lost. >> the unn says it's fa from over. they are still trying to reach

an agreement. it's first time the department has lost so many jobs, plus a mixture closures and cuts to four stations. >> in the fire department we have never faced a reductn of service which resulted in firefightelayoffs and captains and fire engineers. >> union present believes the city could have accepted the wage and benefits concession but instead a bad policy and says residents are going to feel it. >> everybody knows there is a huge hole in the system now leading greater response times possibly leading to fire deaths, god forb. >> they say the proposal fell six million short. the union says it's less an million. there is o thing they agree upon and tat both sides say they would like to get the firefighters re-hired before they are hired elsewhere. there is a displaced

firefighters list inhe state and there are 40 positions availae throughout the bay area. one point the union has ressed is the dits parity between the staffing level in san jose versus other major city. san francisco is numberour out of 25 cities with comparle populations. san jose has the fewest firefighters p capita. >> we have breaking news in the east bay, a traffic nightmare on interstate 80. you can see where it is. it's near albany, west of gill man but past university. a car in a big rig crash. there are mino injuries and the chp told us nobody die it has shut down at least four of the five eastbound lanes and you can see will is a big back-up and very few cars are getting . they are letting cars getting around one at a time and backing

up eastbound. but westbound traffic is backing up as well as people slow down near the crashcene. so aga, this is on interstate 80. >> and bringing an end the sickout by a.c. transit drivers. every day since they imposed a new contract more than 150 drivers have called in sick. the sick calls have forced them to reduce th service causing delays and in some cases stranding riders. a judge will decide wheer to suspend the contract while they go through binding arbitration. they will have to lay off workers if a judge invalidates the new contract. they have $56 million budget deficit. >> a man oakland police arrested earlier this morning for holding a hospital employee hostage is undergng a mental health evaluaon.

it started and ended at children's hospital in oakland. the man walk in and grabb a hospital staffer. police arriv minutes later and the man immediately surrendered. nobody was injured. the hospital says there is little they could do to prevent this from happening. >> the person was brandishing weapon so people come and go into the hospital but at this point in time, security did exactly what they neededo do. police haven't releed the name of the man. hospital officials says he has no ties to the employee he took hostage. >> we're just gettin word in los angeles that a second person has died in a building explosion. they belve th natural gas leak that virtually leveled a building this morning. two workers were blown into the street. one was pinned under a car. crews are making slur the wreckage is safe before search dogs is brought in.

most of the 2,000 evacuees in los angeles haven't been able to go home this morning. hundreds of firefigers are trying to protect power transmission outlines serve most of southern california. a strike team is joing the fight today. at daybreak, water dropping helicopters were back in the air attacking the fire front lines. the crown fire erupted thursday afternoon. flames pushed by strong winds came dangerously close to many neighborhoods. >> my daughter came home and she was in an a panic. she is getting her stuff and i got couple animals to put in the car and i'm out of here. >> 2,000 homes were evacuated. >> you must evacuate.

>> a couple hundred residents spent the night at nearby shelters. >> we were trying to hose it down but they got out. it's terrible. >> by morning it had chewed through 5,000 acres of brush. at least two homes were destroyed. 2 of the 3500 firefighters were injured. the many enemy is the wind with gusts up to 35 miles an hour. this could be a tough fight. these fireghters are on guard just in case. mike, talking abouthe wind. what can you tell us about the weather conditions today? >> you see the wind is blowing rather heavily as the smoke is being pushed away from the fire in los anges county. talk about a forecast, zoom down and take a look at palmdale and

tehachapi fire. bottom o them are going to be dealing with winds, southwest winds 25-35 miles an hour. temperatur in the mid 90s. it's easier around tehachapi, a wind of 10-20 miles an hour and temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80s so it' not going to get any easier for the firefighters over the weekend. tomorrow marks the one-year anniversy since three u.c. berkeley graduates were detained in iran. mothers were joined by protestors in new york. the three were arrested while hiking along the iraq border. they have been accused of spying. in mayhe mothers were allowed to travel and visit their children but haven't hear from them sce. momsay they have put their lives on hold trying to free that their k and put pressure on the iranian government.

president obama says cries lower's plan to add 1100 jobs is vindication to bailout the auto industry. company announced they will add a second shift at one of its production plants. federal government provided chrysler and gm about $80 billion last year. >> today it's going strong and creating new jobs. manufacturing th fuel efficient cars and trucks that will carry us forwar in an energy independt future. you shall prong the naysayers wrong, all of you. the president's visit is part of an intensive cpaign to seize on the positive new trends

in the auto industry as evidence of broader economic recovery takes hold. white house estimates that detroit could add 11,000 new jobs before the end of the year. >> a bill that orders major safety changes to the airline industry is headed to president obama's desk. the senate approved the measure that came in response to deadl commuter airline crash near buffalo that killed 49 people. airlines need to hire more experienced pilots and investigate pits more thoroughly and train them better. there are also rules overhaul to prevent pilot fatigue. >> still great around here. we'ldefinitely see the sunshi but it's going to take a while. take a look outside how the east bay hills is dealing with a little bit of cloudover. mostly sunny at sfo, 45-minute flight arrival delays and talk about how much warmer it's going

sunny skies, temperatures in the 80s, tell bus at. what would it be like in san francisco. we don't kno >> it's not going to happen here. in the east bay and south bay possibly. we're still looking at cloudy sky 'downtown san francisco. couple miles to the sout the sun is out and warming, temperatures are going up. redwood city 61. downtown san francisco is at 55 clouds reaching over to oaknd, half moon bay in the 50s. 74 in antioch and los gatos. monterey bay toward salinas, low 50s and gilroy and sunshine with 71. we'll have sunshine around the bay with the warmth staying mainly in the east bay valleys. clouds, drisz, they'll move back from the coast over our neighborhos to keep us cool tonight. we'll see minimal warming around the bay during the weekend. reason why this low is going to pull to the north away from us

and start to take the brunt of the sea breeze with it. sea breeze won't go away completely and we'll wake up with clouds in the morning. it will be easier for the clouds to retreaback to the coast without that stronger sea breeze. sunnyvale, 72 degrees, warm to 78 in sanose and low 80s around saratoga and los gatos. millbrae, mid-60s. upper 50 along the coast, downtown, san francis. san rafael, about 58. mid to upper 70s in the valleys. the bree will keep richmond and berkey in the mid to upper 60s. more sunshine and low to mid-70s through castro valley. east bay valleys, mid to upper 80s. brenood possibly 90 today. pretty warm around gilroy, mid-80 santa cruz, 13 degrees cooler in monterey. dodger in town, clouds will be
