san jose city officials may decide whether they will accept a last minute offer from the city's fefighters. they are trying to get 49 laid off firefighters re-hired. they laid out further concessions to the city, including retirement changes and higher health pay co-pays. they say it will se the city $5.3 mlion. but a city negotiator says it's too late, too little. >> giv the enormity of th budget situation, it comes dn to the numbers. >> union officials also say the new fire chief who starts today has some other ideas that could save the city money. >> py city council meets tonight

to allo voters to decide on staffing levels for the fire department. to qualify theird 6,000 initiative on the ballot. it will lock the currents number of staff. opponents say the whole city would ha to vote and change the city charter to lay off one firefighter. it will cost nearly $200,000 who put the measuren the ballot. >> an alameda county judge could rule on the labo dispute. drivers union wants the judge to lift an imposed contract that took effect two weeks ago. 20% of the bus drivers since then have called in sick every day forcing route cancellations and stranding passengers, but the union insists there is no sickout. a.c. transit says if the judge overturns e contract, they will have no choice to lay off drivers and eliminate some services. >> san francisco transportation

officials will review given muni operate ears pay raise despit the agency's deficit that led to service cuts. 2200 workers stando get a pay hike that will average nearly 6% to $30 an hour. it will cost the agency $89 million. the charter says muni operats must be the second highest paid transit workers in the country. they were the only union that didn't make any concessions this year as the city facing a half billion dollar deficit. >> we're learning more this morning about the driv who is being blamed for five crashes in danville yesterd. the suspect 23-year-old the brother of a giants outfielder. his red pickup truck struck a light pole and two vehicles. one neighbor described what she

healthare workers are taking the week off. these are the cooks, laundry workers who take care of the hundreds of resints of the piedmont gardens and grand lake homes, both in oakland. six months without a contract, they claim management is offering a 1.5% pay increase, they make in 11 to $17 range. a single mother is one of them. >> i'm struggling and working hard and 1.5% isn't ing to do anything for me and my family. they want me to fay for my medical expenses it's on o pocket. with three kids and money i'm making i can't even live right now. >> 1.5% pay increase over three years. management tells me there have been many offers back and forth over the last six months. one was 8% over three years. retirement pay, the want to keep the pension pay but management ss the union plan is in criticalstatus and is unsustainable. >> it requires the employer

dispersants will affect marine life. a congressman slammed the effort saying that bp carpet bombed the ocean with the chemicals and the coastguard allowed them to do it. both bp and the coaguard have defended the use of dispersants. they say th are necessary components of cleanup operations. >> in southern california, officials say perfect fire fighting weather has helped them put out most of the fire north of los angeles. fire burning near palmdale is 89% contained. crews to have a full containment by tonight it has destroyed four homes and five outbuildings. all right. speaking of low temperatures we have plenty of that. >> four months running. >> we've been below average. let's take a look outside and tell y what is going on.

the reason why we're not getting the sunshine. normally we would see by this time of day, clouds would be back at the coast and have a nice lunch hour full of sunshine but it's n the case here in san francisco. down in san jose we're seeing some sunshine and temperatures have been even colder during the afternn hours take a look outside and show you what is going on. you see clouds hanging around the north bay but quickly fading and same thing with the east bay shore. probably about another hour or two before the sun is out everywhere in the bay. 50s in half moon bay, napa and santa ro. mid to upper 50s around the clouds you can see in e monterey bay and gilroy and salinas andn the low to mid 60s. sunshine aund the bay and cooler than average. cloudy tonight and drizzle less likely this morning.

coolesafternoon will be wednesy and thursday. normally in august, san francisco and oakland get warmer by the ends of month. san jose and livermore drop about one or two degrees. we lose an hour of sunshine this month. watching a little area of low pressure. that is stuck in the jetstream which is yanking cooler air from canada and pushing night our neighborhoods. coolest of the air will be here during the mid-week. for today, pretty much mid to upper 70s in the south bay and 82 in los gatos. on the peninsula, low to mid-70s. check out the coastguard, upper 50s here, downtown in south san francisco, 62 and 67. north bay beaches cloudy and upper 50s, mid to upper 80s through the north bay valleys. clearlake and ukiah, 90 and 92. richmond and berkey and oakland, stu in the mid to upper 60s and low to mid-70s hayward and castro valley. low to mid 90s through the san
