♪ a disappointing new report on the economy prompts president obama to urge republicans to stop blocking a jobs bill. >> the new report from the labor department shows the nation and california going in the wrong direction. jobless claims rose to half a million for the first time since last november. california reported the biggest increase in new claims. terry mcsweeney joins us now with more. terry. >> these pictures are just snapshots, one week of one month but all the same kind of picte. california leadg the nation in initially unemployment claims ahead by a 2-1 margin.

industry. >> you have a lot of people coming availabl looking for jobs, companies getting budgets approv for 2011. anticipate a lot of growth for that. it's not crazy growth. i think we're just gonna see stable, continued solid growth. >> no new numbers out for hope. those who lost it, those who never will. that latter category is represented by people like jose, a man with a criminal record at the statemployment office hoping. >> i have a couple. i'm not letting it kind of psych me because i know there's jobs out the and there's people like the offices to hel you search for tse type of jobs. so tt's what's good about it. >> nationwide it seems that a large number of the newly unemploymented come from the government. here in cafornia there w a large hi in the service industry. experts say in the month of august they do not expect improvement.

live in san francisco, terry mcsweeney. >> take a look at the big board. live, the dow is down 189 at this point the. >> two silicon valley giants are merging. intel announced it's buying security software maker mcivee for $76 billion. both are based in santa clara. intel says the acisition will help the chip maker expand to smart phones and other wireless devices. the bay area housing market still sluggish. tracking from date at that quick says it slumped 23% last month compared to the same time last year. 6800 homes were sold. that's the lowest level in 15 years. experts say people stopped buying as federal tax credits for first-time buyers expired. >> caltrain is asking riders to help make very tough decisions. the agency is holding several public meetings tonight to ask

riders for potentially drastic cuts a fare hikes. among the options, eliminating all weekend tra service, cutting all noncommute time weekday trains and cutting all trains south of san jose. the agency is also considering raising one-way fares by 25 cents an increasing the price of the go pass. need to close a $12 million budget gap. >> the bureau of la management has now suspended the permits for all future events for the promoterhat ran last weekend's deadly offroad race in the southern california desert. eight people were killed after one of the raceers crashed into a group of fans standing along the course. investigators n say it appears some rules were broken, including allong fans to line the track. regulations require fans to remain at least 100 feet away from the action. >> polic are stepping up

security at a south bay elementary school becau of a threatening by vandals. two weeks ago graffiti was found on an outside door at dwyer elementary in claire threatening to detonate a bomb tomorrow. the superintendent told parents about the threats and extra precautions. classes are going on as normal but they're putting extra offices at t school out of an abundance of caution. >> today the last american combat troops in iraq return home and set foot on u.s. soil. ♪ >> loved ones greeted these military police at an air force base in washington state. they returned two weeks before president ama's deadline for the ends of combat operations in iraq. but as emily scidt reports the work is not done. >> a few miles out of iraq, a big step closer to home.
