america great. here is author jackie gingrich curbman. it contains 25 documents and speeches jackie says every american should own. why did you choose these particular documents? >> some of them were very easy to choose, for instance, the declaration of independence and constitution you have to have those documents in any book about our untry. to me they have one thing in common, they give us a glimpse in how our national character has been forged over time. >> some of them didn't make a splash at the time such as the gettiesberg address. >> lincoln was invited very close the time of the speech lincoln got up to deliver h short address. by the time he finished the

photographer wasn't le to get a photograph. >> jackie, how are these speeches relevant tay? what n we learn from them? >> i like this think of them as our national stories, religious freedoms, pilgrams, stories about perseverance and hard work and give us visibility and martin luther king's speech he wants people to be judged on their character, not theirskin collar. it is important that we understand are different from other countries, we have a declaration of independce. it is very different to understand we are people who understand how important god is, that god has given us these rights and we have to loan them

>> november is national adoption month. in america 3 out of every 5 families are touched by adoption "700 club" co host, terry meeuwsen knows becae she is one of them. >> adoption is so dear to me.
6:41 am
my husband andy and i had 2 bilogical ildren then we adopted 2 children. i thought our family was complete until god stirred my heart. a couple told me about 3 sisters they met in a ukrainian orphanage. the couple was approved to adopt the 2 younger children. so the older sist offered to stay behind. what type of child is willing to make such a sacrife? i couldn't get it out of my thought. i prayed god bring a family to adopt those girls. little did i know it would be my own. the willingness to embrace another adoption didn'thappen overnight. i already had 4 children. i imagined the chaos of 7. andy and i clearly felt god calling us to become parents to these 3 little girls. i was looking for someone who
6:42 am
would say terry, are you insane? this is adopting 3 girls at once. we should have been concentrating on sending our kids to college. instead we would be back to kids in grade schoo godi don't think i can do this. i just thought i am not big enough for this. this is a huge job. it is too important. if i blow this, are they suffering in the orphanage, yes. wow god. i dot know how to do this. i don'know how to be everything they probably need us to be and, and we are not perfect parents in any way. i felt like god chuckleand said, you are not going to do this, i am going to do thi you are just going to come with me. >> so with god's promise to help, we added 3 wonderful ukrainian girls to our family, sophia 9, zoya 11 and e lisa 12.

it is very fulfilling to know you have given a child a better life, christn heritage and a chance to know god. >> tey meeuwsen is with us now, not only has she adopted 5 children herselshe is also the directorof orphan's promise cbn's outreach to orphans and vulnerable children around the world. tell us about these children and the struggles they fa. >> most of them have been in institutios in their countries because something has happened, parents are died or addiction or desertion. they don't know at family is. one of the things we love to do is be able to have an input. it is hard to do this in governme facilities. we work with people that have
6:44 am
existing orphanages. we are in 52 countries in 5-year time. we see the incredible opportunity to make a difference thugh education and spiritually in the lives of children. love covers a multitude of sins. it makes an impact on them. >> earlier, you said that we think thatthere is a lot of kids being adopted. really it is only 1 percent of all the orphans out there. >> this year 146 million orphans in the world and about 1 percent of the children are adopteinto families. that isone of the reasons orphan's prome exists, we looked at the other 99 percent, what happens to them? we are establhing training center, undergurding micro enterprise opportunities, acadic opportunities for these children, safe living environments for them and some
6:45 am
instancefood is a part of what they get. always the message, they are the children of god and they have purpose and meaning. >> among other things, true religion taking care of the orphans. >> exactly. >> what challenges might pares face. you have adopted 5, 3 beautiful girls from the ukraine and 2 boys? >> one of the things that happens, especially with people adopting older children, i consider any child not an infant an older child, we expect they are going to come with grateful hearts and we are going to get our life back. [laughter] i think you have to know these children come with abandonment issues, rejection issues, they have been wounded, sometimes physically aswell as emotionally and psychologically. god wants to use us to be part of the healing process. you can't love that pain out of
6:46 am
them but love them through the process of healing. do you remember the story about a woman that adopted a young boy from russia and at 7 sent him back and said i can't handle him? i understod what she was going through. resources once you adopt a child are pretty im. you are finding more and more opportunitys to get traing and background and understanding. you are not adoptina child who even knows what family is. how are you going to have them easily becoe a part of their family, it is a process. >> what advise, terry, would you give to couples considering international adopti. >> i would say hear from god. it is wonderful to have a heart for children. you need to know what you are getting into and the challenges and hear from other parents. don't be afrai if god is calling you to it,
6:47 am
he'll give you what yoneed to be equipt. be sure god sg calling you into that. >> good advise. thank you for whatyou are doing for orphan's promise. we appreciate it. comi up, how this couple took a set back and turned it into a blessingto their community.
