one. three people died when fire and smoke trapd them in a bedroom. >> we found all three. we did not find working smoke detectors. >> this electrical cord is believed to be the cause of the fire. the people ling upstairs had pour cut off and had tapped into electricity of a downstairs unit. the numerous extension cords used to tie into it appear to have caused the fire. neighbors week to crackling and loud screams. >> i could see smoke and fire inside from the windows. and that we just people screaming. >> a fourth member of the family, a seven-year-oldirl made it out ave and according to neighbors that's because of

the efforts of the man living with the mother and two daughters who went in to make another rescue and never ce out. >> the man on the bottom went inside and pull out seven-year-old girl. >> a mother and daughter who lived upstairs jumped from the second floor to safety breaking their legs in the process. one downstairs uni was vacate, the other had been occupied just yesterday by a single moth of three. >> i hear the noises upstairs and i was wondering what happened to the ladies upstairs. and then i opened the door, and i see the fire was coming out. so i went back to -- inside, woke up my kids and go out. >> it is a terrible tragedy that could easily have been much worse. >> oakland fire department is saying in order to prevt further tragedies like this one, everybody is urged to get a smoke alarm. they know you've heard it before but obviously not everyone's doing it. terry mcsweeney, ab 7 news.

>> we're going to switch gathers dramatically. we have heard of firefighters rescuing kittens from trees but what about cows from wells. that's what happened in castro valley. this was the scene on the 6400 block of the avenue where a cow fell into a 12 foot deep well. animal and control officers took an hour draining a well and delicately lowered a crane and lowered the animal out and to safe. the cow was pulled from the well, no serious injuries walking away. that's good news. >> next up, chilly temperatures and black ice leading to a number of spinouts and accidents across the bay area. >> police believe black ice caused two rollover accidents in napa county. the crashes were about two miles aparand both drivers were injured. no word how serious. >> caltran's crews were called out before dawn to deice the sectn of a road after another crash there. the chp says black ice is

valley as well as napa and santa rosa. we'll keep the 40s in the forecast for oakland and san francisco and we've got a little rain to talk about for your holiday plans. sarah? >> lisa, thanks vef. the third police shooting in 24 hours. police-involved shooting is being investigated right now. the latest one involves san leandro police. one involved a chase and a stolen car. it happened near the oakland san leandro board erred early this morning. jenelle with the detai. >> cheryl, san leandro police are not saying anything but what we know is it ended in this intersection with one won dead shot by san leandro police. >> i heard a gunshot. i ran to the living room, put my son on the floor. >> the shooting unfolded right in front of maria martinez home in oakland. it was around 10:30 last night when san leandro police officers began chasing this 1989 jaguar.

just after crossing into oakland city limits, the jaguar lost control and crashed into two parked vehicles. witnesses say they could hear officers screaming at the driver and then gunshots. they say police shot and killed a female driver and tased the car's male passenger. >> i'm scared. i was like oh, my god, my babies. this is the reason i moved to this neighborhood. it's supposed to be safer than further into oakland but recently a lot of gunots, this part of town's going down, too. >> this is the thir officer-involv shooting in the bay area in the last 24 hours. tuesday night san jose police responded to the home invasion robbery of a marijuana grow house on locust street. police st one suspect in the leg wounding him. in san francisco yestday a woman called police to say she had been stabbed. when office arrived on bacon street, they say a suspect approached them with a knife and

these ju workers very quiet, very solemn, not a good sign. and up there, that's where they've been searching three to four miles because that other side of the mountain, that is where i'm told e got separated from her group, blinded by snow, accidentally going out of bounds into extreme terrain. several helicopters have been in the air grouping in the parking lot at the resort before taking off on what would have been 12 hour shifts flying over the sierra. on the ground were 50 rescu workers wearing ow shoes and having tracking dogs carrying emergency supplies. so we have a few pictures of her. here's a picture with her boy. he is one of the last people to have seen her alive. and out here also are a few of her family member this picture showing some of them, showing her with her brothers. now, those family members right now are being held back, held away from the media and spoken to by a chaplain. not the best news in the world. not official her contion or

it's happeng in the santa cruz mountains. live over the scene in felton where a truck flipped over and was hanging over mount herman road leaking diesel fuel into bear creek. this is near scotts valley. you can see the debris on the roadway, a piece of heavy machery is moving. they he pulled the truck up and stopped the leak after about 80 gallons of diel got out. you can see the mess on the road. the cargo also spilled out. nobody was hu in the wreck. that's miraculous. it might have been caused by early morning black ice which we got a lot of across the bay area this morning. so that's still underway there. >> eric, thanks very much. chrysler is issuing three separate recalls, 150,000 trucks

and s.u.v.s. first dodge ra truck from the 2008 because of steering problems. the second 2009 model dodge journey s.u.v.'s. the auto maker says they need to fix side air bags that might not deploy. and the last recall involves dodge ram 1500 trucks for the 2011 model year. the auto maker says an issu with the rear axles could cause the trucks to stall. chrysler owners are call the company for repairs. we have the numbers post on our website abnews.com. look under "see ion tv." >> a new report out today suggests stable gas prices and improving economy have more consumers buying trucks and s.u.v.'s. in fact, they he sold better than compact cars and hybrids this year. according to the site, truck sales were up 15% and s.u.v. sales up 21% over last year. many trucks and s.u.v.'s were bought by contrtors to be used

oakland internatial airport is offering up to 72 hours of free parking in january and february for some people flying to southern california. now, the deal is only for travelers flying on a tuesday, wednesday or thursday betwe january 4th and february 10th. to get the free parking customers have to first register on the airpo's website and print out a coupon. passengers have to have an airline ticket for seats along with a parking lo ticket. the deal is worth $56. we hava ling at abc7ne.com. look under "see it on tv.." >> it was a dry morning for once but also very cool one.

>> that's right. more cl conditions. and grt day to get away although the weather's not the problem, probably the traffic into the sierra nevada because it's smooth sailing with no problems with chai requirements. heavly, isn't that beautiful with partly cloudy skies. i have to tell yo truckee this morning zero. right now it's 9 degrees. be prepared, very, very cold and back home looking at lots of sunshine here but we have weak disturbance that will bring in some more clouds later on today. looks nice out there only in the 40s though. san francisco 's cool. temperatures have not moved all that much fr early this morninin the city. you were in the 30s earlier though in livmore, 46 right now, 46 napa. upper 40s mountain view and 50s half moon bay. with increasing clouds, a slight chance of a shower mainly alg the shoreline. that will work to keep us out of the 20s tonight but a chilly evening and rain o the way tomorrow.
