♪ good morning. california is now just minut away from getting a new chief executive. governor elect jerry brown is about to be sworn in as the state's 39th governor at the sacramento memorial auditorium. he wanted the event to be low-key with a focus on spending as little as possible. this is brown's third term as govern. he faces the daunting task of closing a $28 billion shortfall. he intends to outline the plan in a matter of weeks. he said it will include extending tax hikes on cars, sales and income taxes. he promises to make more cuts. we're streing his entire inauguration on abcews.com. an oakland city councilwoman is

san francisco district attory carmel carmella harris will be sworn in in sacramento. one of the big priorities is tackle mortgage fraud. ther is no announcement yet who her suessor will be in san francisco. gavin neom will not be sworn into his new office today. instead the mayor has scheduled an inaugural ceremony one week from today. a spokesman said it might happen sooner. newsom decided hold off until the newly elected board of supervisors selects an interim mayor to fill out the rest of his term. lieutenant governor mald nad dough defeated in novemr will remain on the job until newsom takes the oath of office. california's new superintendent of public instruction is now officially on the job. >> i do solemnly swear. >> that i will support and defend the constitution of the united states. >> that i will support and

driver. officers say they had ended the chase befo the vehicle crashed. they're not idtifying the driver or saying why they were initially trying to pull that car over. the outgoing governor arnold schwarzeneer reduced two prison sentences and issued one pardon. last night he commuted a senten of nunez, the son of former assembly speaker. he reduced his 16-year prison sentence to seven years saying his sentence was excessive nunez pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter last year in a fight that killed santos two years ago. the family is upset with the decision callg it sneaky and pure politics. governor schwarzeneggealso gave a pardon to a woman sentenced to life in prison for killing her abusive ex-boyiend. i first met rose parker at the california instituon for women ten years ago. parker served ten years in

blizzard conditions over the past have eased this morning but flurries remaiand the melting snow made for icy roads. snowplows have to clear 30 miles of roads before that highway can reopen. you've heard the saying what happened in vegas stays in vegas. well, it's soon going to melt in vegas. look at this! snow flurries. won't affect the hotels and servic >> maybe people wantgo out and look and mbe not. >> for a minute. >> and go back to the warm glow of the lights inside. they still have weather advisories around there and southern california while weaver drying. we're going to see an extended period of dry weather. you see the white and the pink this is those are winter weather advisories. they're until 6:00 in southern california. until 4:00 in the mounins around las vegas.

you can see the grapevine still stung in a snowy pattern. but's moving to the east. about a half inch of snow but it all melted. about 7 inches of wet, heavy snow. gives you an idea why they were havi such problems. backere at home, you can see outside the sun is coming out. but we do have some tulie fog in the central valley. that is going to keep some of us hazy, especially the east bay valls over the next couple of mornings and afternoons while the rest of us see more sunshine and slightly warmer weather. mainly the upper 40s. everybody else the low 50s. so pretty comfortable temperatures 11:22 this morning. inland low to mid-40s with increasing sunshine. partly cloudy today, seasonably cool afternoon temperatures. the lack of clouds at nigh will make for colder overnight hours and mornings. that means the heater's going to
