nationwide curfew. egypt's national airline carrier has suspended flights from cairo for 12 hours. >> a lawsuit against the hospital and the state of california. psychiatric technician donna k. gross was strangled at the napa county hospital last october. 37-year-old massey is charged in the attack. he has pleaded not guilty.

the lawsuit claims the state is responsible for her death and suffering and emotional distress of her family. the lawsuit claims the alarm system was flawed. >> in two hours a multiethnic coalition will reject the man the city manager is recommending as police chief. all signs suggest she will nominate chris moore and that's why the group is unhappy. the coalition says ethnic minorities in san jose don't trust law enforcement anymore after a history of racial profiling and say chris moore is just another insider. oakland police chief anthony batts was the other finalist and announced yesterday that he had not been selected despite the fact he didn't get the job, he says he's not sure of his future in oakland. he's concerned about a lack of support and resources for oakland's police department. >> a school in danville is closed for the day after a fire ripped through a nearby home.

the montessori school was not damaged. the fire broke out around 5:30. the ceiling collapsed and one firefighter was injured by falling debris. he was taken to the hospital and is said to be doing fine. firefighters say they believe people inside the burning how managed to escape safely. damage to the home is estimated at more than $750,000. golden gate bridge officials are meeting now in a session that will likely end with the completely elimination of human toll takers at the iconic bridge. terry mcsweeney is live at the toll plaza where the decision will soon be made. terry? >> the bridge board of directors in their meeting right now and they're hearing some public testimony. but for all intents and purposes, this is a done deal. come february of next year, the electronic toll lanes start coming in november of next year. they're all in and the toll takers are all out, a job since the bridge began in 1937. going, going, gone. take a look.

we are inside with them just a few minutes ago. their main concern is money. and it should be. this is a district $89 million in the red over the next five years. that's a projection. this will save $19 million in its first eight years. but 32 toll takers are going to be out of work and it's good work, $50,000 a year or so. they give change, they give directions and they put a human face on the world's most famous bridge. for them it's family. >> we know customers by name. they know us by name. they look for us. and we can see 'em in other booths, we'll wave at 'em. a friendly smile. that's all it takes. they love us and we love them. >> without you? >> it's not gonna be the same. it won't be the same. >> this is never an easy task for an organization to have to do this. but the bright side is that we believe we'll have open in the organization for these employees depending on their skill sets.

(applause) we've got breaking news. you're looking at a live picture of a police officer speaking in patterson. they have just found the car in the delta canal. >> division of the sheriff's department. and she was determined as well to go back and look again and to continue to look based on everything we knew. so when she called me last night and said let's dive this thing again, we did. with respect to using sonar technology. and, again, the additional help from the federal bureau of investigation for which i'm very grateful brought in sector scanning sonar, just another technology, and we were able to identify the anomaly and then

send the dive team sonar rover down and able to actually see the license plate of the vehicle. >> and where again is it located? >> in the west block of the siphon. >> so looking at the canal behind it, it's going to be on the west side of that block there's three channel blocks that run underground. it's the west block. >> is it wedged? >> it's wedged against something. we don't know what it is yet. >> difficult to pull out? >> it's going to be a very, very dangerous dive. >> can you say how you guys were able to miss it so many other times before? >> well, remember that these are very difficult circumstances in which to search. the construction and design of the canal, the water conditions, the fact that we repeatedly had to work with the water authority to raise and lower the water levels. it's not perfect. and that's why we weren't going to give up. so because we missed it the first time really isn't relevant

to the overall investigation. but what is relevant is that we were determined to find it. so even though we missed it the first or second time, you know, we were determined to go back and continue to look until we knew for sure with absolute certainty there wasn't anything in the site. that's why we're here this morning. if conditions were perfect we may have found the car sooner but they're not. they're very dangerous and in a recovery operation the last thing we wanna do is risk the lives of our teams and law enforcement professionals and divers to rush through a search operation. so, you know, i'm not disappointed that we, you know, pulled all these stolen vehicles out. i'm very -- i'm relieved now that we found the suspect's vehicle and we can help the family bring closure to this horrific crime. >> how is the mother reacting? do you know anything? >> i don't know. i just know that the victim's

advocate, the f.b.i.'s victim advocate that's with the family notified them and called us before i calm came to talk to all of you. >> how are you going to get the car out? >> hope to accepted a diver down the block and get a line on it and pull it out. but i can't give you a definitive time line, tell you how that's going to happen. i can only tell you it will start to happen in the next water cycle which is again about four hours before we can lower the level and flow of the canal again to go in. this is a very methodical well-planned, meticulous drive or rig operation before we go in. >> all right. you've been listening in on a news conference by the sheriff's department. divers have found the vehicle belonging to the suspect in the kidnapping of giuliani.

>> do you think you'll be able to get in there before nightfall? >> that's our hope. but, again, this is not an operation we're going to rush. if we determine it's not safe to do today, then we'll freeze this crime scene and be back here again tomorrow. >> can you talk about your emotions? this has been a roller-coaster ride for you. >> it's been an emotional roller-coaster ride for everybody. especially members of our department and the allied agencies and the multiple dive teams here. i know for a fact a lot of these he men and women have children the same age as giuliani. i think it speaks volumes to the character of our staff with respect to their determination and the fact that they simply weren't gonna give up. there's a lot of people of that gone without sleep. they're very, very committed to this operation. again, we're saddened to learn it's going to end up tragically. so, yes, it's been an emotional roller-coaster ride for everyone. >> we know this is the last car

he was driving but we don'n't kw necessarily they were in that car? >> we will not know -- >> again, crews have found the vehicle involved in the kidnapping of a four-year-old boy. giuliani snatched from his home in patterson ten days ago. they located the car after a week and a half. the suspect rodriguez is the boy's mother's ex-boyfriend. he's accused of snatching him from their home. we'll follow this all day and bring you the latest at 5:00 and 6:00 tonight. in other news now hundreds gathered at the kennedy space center in florida to mark the 25th anniversary of the space shuttle challenge disaster. nasa officials and employees, farmer astronauts as well as family and friends of the fallen crew attended the ceremony. among them the widow of the commander who offered words of hope. >> it's time for the next 25 years to unfold. let us boldly look to the future. with a vision built upon our

rich heritage of space pioneers. what's on the next horizon for our nation? and planet? >> challenger exploded 73 seconds into the flight killing all seven on board including christa mcauliffe who would have become the first teacher in space. >> in palo alto, the dispatch center investigating what's behind hundreds of phantom 9-1-1 calls. it happened more than two weeks ago and a dispatcher picked up the line and no one was on the other end. seconds later another call came in. the dispatch ended up receiving a total of 566 calls over the next four hours. officials don't believe a prankster was to blame. they think it was a technology glitch. a similar problem was reported by the chp dispatch center in vallejo earlier this week. >> meteorologist mike nekio is here now with the forecast. >> you can see the fog will not go away which means we are finished with record high temperatures. i'll update you on our chances

♪ taco bell is fighting back against a lawsuit that accuses the fast food chain of using a meat filling that's not really all beef. the alabama attorney's filing the suit say taco bell's seasoned beef is false advertising and doesn't meet the government standard to be called ground beef. this morning taco bell bought full-page ads saying thank you for suing us. and here's the truth about our seasoned beef. taco bell says their beef is 88% usda inspected. the lawsuit wants taco bell to change the wayizes its product.

>> 88% beef. the other 12% not beef! our weather changing quite a bit. >> i'm glad you noticed that. definitely a new flavor to our forecast, how about that. filler out there if you will in the form of fog. mount tamalpais down on the coolness that sits on top of us. almost looks like summer outside. take a look at our temperatures and the cloud cover and you can see there's plenty of cloud cover around and most of us still in the 40s. 50 livermore and half moon bay. low to mid-40s -- 50s excuse me, until you get to monterey at 48. when the fog fades, partially cloudy and definitely cooler toot. showers sunday morning. that's the biggest change in the forecast. as we head into february, next week already february, drier and

brighter. today a struggle. i think we'll get it into the upper 50s, maybe a 60 here or there where the fog fades the quickest. monterey bay low to mid-60s. we have the sunshine here. tonight everybody's dealing with clouds and fog once again. upper 30s in our inland valleys. mid-40s around the bay shore and out to the coast. here we are at 8:00 saturday evening to 9:00. you saw by 3:00 showers developing. probably strongest around 9:00. a little lull and another cold front is going to keep down from the northwest. because it's coming from the northwest, it's not going to have as much moisture with it but still enough that 7:00 sunday morning the heaviest will be falling and about a quarter and a and a half inch will drop by the time 5:00 sunday rolls around. once we get past that, tulie fog to contend with again for monday morning's commute. heading to the sierra, finally after a couple week no snow, we definitely have some and it will all fall saturday into sunday

happy new year. >> penelope has quite a story. she's a tibetan spaniel mix. and she's only a year old and came in with puppies. they have adopted all her little babies but now she's looking for a home. she's a great little dog. she is looking after to debbie because she's very treat-motivated. she'll sit, down. >> does she get along with other dogs? >> in kennels with other dogs. we are careful with small dogs with children because the dogs are fragile and the kids don't get rough. >>. >> thanks for joining us.
