two new views of the devastation cause by the tsunami in japan. homes were swept away for miles. death toll in the thousands but in all this destruction, incredible destruction, we have some uplifting stories to tepg you about. rescuers pulled two people from the wreckage four days later. they found a 70-year-old woman in her house that was washed away by tsunami waves. she suffered from hypothermia but didn't have any life-threatening injuries. another team pulled a man from a

building after workers heard him calling for help. >> there is evidence that the primary containment unit has been reached. one japanese official told the iae that radiation is being released directly into the atmosphere. they ordered some 140,000 people to stay indoors. that order came after new fire and explosions increased radiation levels around the fukushima daiichi plant. long after the fire was extinguished, a japanese official says water to keep the reactor cooled might still be boiling but the report levels of radiation have dropped dramatically. experts on "good morning america" say the situation appears headed to the catastrophe. >> i think we're close to the point of return. if i had the ear of a japanese prime minister, i would exercise the chernobyl action, put the

overcrowded. here is a report on fishing village. >> we traveled up by a small fishing village. there was a brief moment of good news. >> today in japan, what many may call a miracle. in the remote town a town thought to be completely wiped out, 9700 people previously reported feared dead were located. they were evacuated and alive. 10,000 people remain missing in the small fishing village, 1,000 confirmed dead. >> along this strip of coast there is no power and little food or water. >> we're continuing our push up to the north but it's incredibly difficult because so many roads are blocked off and you have to approach them on foot, actually you can see a perfect example, the road has literally collapsed

the third largest question hasn't seen this economic hardship since world war ii. estimates to rebuild the country is running into the tense of billions of dollars. >> estimates have risen for santa cruz, the dos fix the damaged dock is more than $22 million, up from $17 million. the numbers include estimate of costs to rebuild damaged docks and other infrastructure. that does not include damage done to private vessels. at least 18 boats have sunken and another hundred were damaged and a dozen are still missing. >> in other news, san francisco police are looking for the man who shot five people in the mission district overnight outside a bar in a popular taqueria. this is the latest in a wave of violence that has the neighborhood worried. janelle wang is live at the scene at 16th and valencia streets. >> police say there were lots of

people around when the shooting happened. this is a very busy area, they are urging witnesses to come forward with any information because it could help with their investigation. >> the owners of the bar and taqueria are cleaning up but evidence of the violence are still here. bullet holes at both places. it's the latest spot to get hit by gunfire in the mission district. >> it went dit, dit, dit, dit, it lasted for about three seconds. >> they found five shooting victims. four with non life-threatening injuries. at the believe the shooting could be gang-related. just in the past few weeks, multiple shootings and stabbings police say in most cases, it's gangs retaliating against each other. >> i have a red backpack and they said make sure don't wear it outside. >> it's a gang color?

>> people get stabbed, being asked about it. i'm careful. >> the owner of the restaurant says he knows gangs hang out around the area. >> they don't bother nobody. >> the residents are worried they will be caught in the crossfire. >> i think about that. innocent bystanders walking by and getting caught up in some gang-related activity is frightening. >> do you feel safe living here? >> i do feel safe. i haven't been bothered or anything. it's kind a little worrisome. >> the owner of the club says all the victims are regular customers who stop by after work. he hopes police will do more to keep the neighborhood safe. >> i don't know why they don't have more lighting there. >> the victims were all men ranging from 26 to 46 years old.

as for the suspects, all young men in their early 20s. police have released two possible vehicle descriptions, one is a red trans am and the hero is a chevy capri. >> santa clara county sheriff's deputies made a surprising find during a traffic stop. deputies with the help of a canine unit discovered 39 pounds of methamphetamine. they provided these photographs. the drugs were stacked inside hidden compartments including the taillights. estimated value, $430,000. the lone person in the car is 54-year-old woman from tijuana is now in custody. >> still ahead, the health insurer who say it may have misplaced sensitive information for more than two million

pink slips are going out to warn teachers of possible layoffs. educators and parents are rallying today to support

governor brown's spending levels to maintain levels. you know at 6:30 this morning, while many people were just waking up or getting ready for work, the california teachers association was having a press conference to discuss how this day was going to unfold. today actually is the deadline for school districts to issue preliminary pink slips. now some administrators will also get them. there will be rallies throughout the day in santa clara, burlingame, oakland and here in san bruno where we are at 4:00. the superintendent of schools will be here. take the new haven school district in union city. a small district, 60 pink slips have been issued. in a larger district like oakland, 540 layoff notices were sent out. >> it's very difficult to get a pink slip this year because we're expecting our first baby and i'm faced with all the stress of losing my job and

worrying about not being able to provide for my baby. support our schools and support the governor's plan. >> the governor's plan calls for a special june election to extend current taxes, if voters approve that the cuts will not be as severe and some of those layoff notices could be rescinded but for now, school districts have to send out these pink slips because they have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. i'm live in san bruno, lyanne melendez, "abc 7 news." today is also pg&e's deadline to provide documents to state regulators verifying that pressure levels across the utility's entire gas system are safe. they have spent months sift go through you thousands of boxes of documents at cow palace.

and santa rosa. mid to upper 50s. mid 50s for santa cruz and gilroy but salinas and monterey in the low to mid-50s. rain just about everywhere. heaviest will continue to fall in the afternoon hours. for tomorrow or thursday, looks like it will be more showery and scattered in nature and there will be dry times more so than today. periods of rain, a chilly rain for friday, saturday and sunday. as far as today, low to mid-50s look good around the bay, south bay and over to the east bay valleys with upper 50s along the coast at some time low 60s in the north bay with rain-cooled air. temperatures around monterey bay temperatures in the 50s, you'll get more rain in the overnight hours. most of us north of us will see light rain. rain in tahoe, 52 degrees. palm springs with 88 today. light of rain as a drizzle, low

50s for the rest of us, upper 40s in the valleys. >> the cold weather moving north of us who are getting the tail end of that and because of that most of the rain in the north bay with very limited amounts as you head farther to the south. here we are at noon. you can see impressive yellows, even moderate rain moving lieu the heart of the day. but during the evening rush hour it tapers to some light rain, even some drizzle for tomorrow morning's commute. here is one of the breaks i'm talking about. once we get to noon tomorrow and in the afternoon, we'll see more sunshine but you can see already showers developing as we head into wednesday night into thursday morning. south bay, tenth of an inch, up to a third around the bay. up to two-thirds in the north bay. in the mountains, up to an inch and a half. still a pretty mild flow with the showers wednesday and thursday with temperatures in the low 60s around the bay,
