>> kristen: major storm is bringing fast wind and dangerous surf. here is the north bay and drivers are dealing with a lot of showers on highway 101. >> and it drevmgd san francisco and the mission district this morning where they found it hard to stay dry. driving has been treacherous with flooding on throughout the bay area. let's take a look at live doppler -- live picture from the bay bridge you can see gloomy dark, gray

clouds, no doubt a little dangerous. >> live team storm coverage. terry mcsweeney is in the north bay. >> let's begin with mike nicco tracking the storm. >> here is a look at that storm. there are several of them embedded within this full line. notice the red. this is right along the cold front. you can see lightning strikes over san pablo bay. one that brought faster than 50 mile-per-hour winds to parts of marin county. deeper reds. those are rainfall rates that are running around five inches an hour. they are racing off to the northeast at about 30 miles an hour. we have received inch and a half of rain in los gatos. once we get behind the system we'll have scattered storms but the strongest part is moving through the southern sections and moving into san francisco right now crossing over the san pablo bay and heading to places like hercules and oakland down

to hayward. one to two inches of rain is possible to over the next 24-48 hours and we could have flooding from highways, streets, overpasses, and even parking lots could be flooded. if you live in a low-lying area make sure your drains are clear. >> let's go to terry mcsweeney live in san rafael it's very windy and the rain is coming down hard. >> mike was just talking about, gusts up to 50 miles an hour. i think that is happening where i'm standing. chp gave an advisory for empty high profile trucks and recreation vehicles not to go over the richmond-san rafael bridge, it is howling. the wind is being blown sideways. we have truckers who is going to wait this out. they wouldn't go over this bridge right now. and take a look at stinson beach

this morning. old glory almost torn in half by the howling winds. we are told it was in one bees just yesterday. forced a generations of stinson beach and she says winds like this bring backs memories of devastating storms of the past. >> '80, '89, we've had pretty bad storms but i don't think it's going to happen right now. and the sand down there blowing -- it was stinging our faces. at sir francis drake boulevard that that was the picture, not hard to find the splashing going on in 101. find it in novato and san

anselmo and greenbrae but point reyes and tomales bay, 2,000 customers without power. schools were closed in anticipation of exactly what happened. that is the story and if you are driving a high profile vehicle, stay off the richmond-san rafael bridge, it is howling out there. >> hang on. >> amy hollyfield continues our storm coverage live on highway 17 in santa cruz mountains. >> reporter: things are starting to happen in santa cruz. we heard about a tree that fell on someone's home. it happened on nelson road of the person inside is okay but that is the same road where the mudslide happened earlier this week and it has crews very worried. look at the hillside, you can

see a trickle of mud coming down the hillside. we've been watching it for about an hour. you can see caltrans crews. they have a bulldozer scooping the debris on the road. this is happening on the southbound side of highway 17. it did shut down traffic briefly so they can get the road clear of mud. caltrans citizen this is routine for them during the winter months and they haven't dealt with any major calls today. everyone wants to avoid is nervous about happening is large landslide that we saw in scots valley but they want to make sure it doesn't slide anymore. they haven't evacuated the residents but it is possibility. >> if we have to start moving people out and baste because safety issue we'll get them out.

>> we know who is up there. we know our residents very well out there. some have special health concerns and things like that. >> reporter: they had atvs in place so if they need to get people out they can. we checked on the san lorenzo river and it's moving pretty good. residents are watching it, too, and they know how to move fast and get out. interesting when i asked caltrans about slides and crews looking for them, they quickly turned the conversation over to highway 17. this is really what they are worried about. drivers, they really say they can't stress enough how careful they want drivers to be when they are out in this mess. highway 17 is where they see the most problems. live in santa cruz county, amy hollyfield, "abc 7 news." >> we want to take you back up north where schools in tomales bay and invernes called.

bigger bodega bay and tomales high school. west marin elementary school and inverness school. nearly 5,000 pg&e customers are without power. hardest hit area is in the north bay with 2700 outages. in the east bay there are 1500 customers without power. 600 customers are affected along the peninsula where we had power lines down onto a transmission power line in foster city. in the south bay, no reported outages in san francisco right now. >> if you are trafblg today or picking someone from the airport call ahead, officials at sfo say arriving flights are delayed an average of 90 minutes. no major delays are reported in san jose and oakland at this time. for up-to-the-minute information check out flight tracker at www.abc7.com. >> you can once again get to

yosemite national park. highways 140 and 120 reopened with restrictions this morning after being closed since sunday when a massive storm closed those roads and knocked out power to the park. hotels are running on generators and existing lodging reservations are being honored but campgrounds remain closed. traffic on highways 140 and 120 are allowed tw between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. chains are required. >> it's an absolute mess getting into the sierra. this is video from the caltrans camera which is west of donner summit. that is highway 50 at myers. so you can see a lot of snow there. cars on the side president go their chains. it's a similar picture in north lake tahoe. you see chains required there but traffic is moving smoothly even though there is snow coverage on the road.

big rigs are being held at apple gate. at least 12 inches of snow has fallen in the past 24 hours. if you have weather or video we would love to see them. upload them to ureport at www.abc7.com or e-mail them to ureport. >> as we mentioned a major power line is down along the peninsula. >> carolyn tyler is live in that area with more. >> it happened just after 10:00. i'm the in san mateo the city of san mateo in that contemporary called mariners island. we don't know quite how but a power line stopped in and charged a transmission power. pg&e says they have de-energized that line now but they have rerouted the power. no customers were without power and they say the area is now safe. you can probably see behind me there has been a command center

that has been set up. fire officials were there trying to figure out what is going on. again the area is safe. transmission line came down around 10:00 this morning. live in san mateo, carolyn tyler "abc 7 news." >> a lot more about the storm coming up. let's move on to other news. the attorney for barry bonds resumes cross-examination today of the former business manager. bonds arrived for court to hear more testimony from steve hoskins who is his childhood friend. they are trying to paint him as a bitter former friend angry. yesterday he testified that bonds talked to him on several occasions about using steroids. he made a secret recording in which he claims greg ander son can be heard talking about the steroids he was providing bonds. >> one million dollars a day,

that is the fine pg&e could be facing for missing gas pipeline records. today the puc may decide whether to impose the fine which would be the biggest ever issued against the utility company. pg&e spent months digging records up to meet the march 15th deadline but state regulators say some documents are still missing. this was promised after last september's pipeline rupture. pg&e will have a chance to respond at a hearing on monday. today pg&e is at the cpuc for another reason, how customers can opt out of the smart meter program. opponents say opting out is not good enough and want a moratorium. thousands of consumers complain that smart meters cause inaccurate spikes in the utility bills and they also claim they

workers have been treated in the hospital after stepping in radioactive water. the workers have radiation levels within allowable limits. in tokyo they were handing out bottled water to parents of babies after increased radiation levels were found in tap water. stores have completely sold out of bottled water. and food is hard to come by because radiatn contamination has caused many people to horde supplies. they say radiation levels have returned to safe levels in tokyo but still taking precautions. >> the golden state warriors, the team is donating $5 for every remaining ticket sold for quake relief efforts. this is for friday game against toronto and the sunday game against washington. in addition, they will be

you can see san jose right behind mike. it's going to be raining pretty hard. >> more than inch and a half rain in los gatos so the south bay is getting their fair share of wet weather. you can see the rain falling in san jose. let's talk about one area where we have heavy rain and look at this. what a nightmare trying to get across the bay bridge, once get on the bridge, winds are gusting around 50 miles per hour. all of our bridges are a little dangerous with those gusty winds. let's start with the wind and

show you what it is doing, 51 miles per hour at sfo. 44 in oakland. we have 35 around napa, fairfield, concord, livermore, san jose, 30 around hayward and mountain view and santa rosa, only 6 miles per hour as the front is starting to move through. as far as what is going to happen. let's take a look at live doppler, strongest thunderstorm right now moving into the western sections of contra costa and alameda counties and into solano. you see all the red. heaviest of the rain, we're going find flooding develop in the form of streets, may get ponding. some of the under passes and some parking lots. make sure it's clear right now. don't see any lightning out of the storm but it did have lightning earlier. it could drop that. here the last hour, you can see this mass moving through. the red becoming a little less harder to see.

maybe losing a little intensity. it's doing that because the raining so hard. here is a look what is developing off the coast and all these moving to the northeast at about 40-50 miles per hour. if you live along the peninsula or coast or live along the bay you will get gusty winds, 35-40 miles per hour. you see the strong radar returns around the santa cruz mountains, just a matter of time we get a mudslide. flooding is a bigger problem today. side effects for all this rain, all of our counties under a flood advisory. not only that but the winds, saturated ground and trees blown around by the wind. they may cause a slide when they let go and we may see more down power lines. winds will stay up around 55 miles an hour and surf will get kicked up at 5:00 this evening.

breaking waves out of the north-northwest at 15-18 feet may cause dangerous rip currents and minor flooding. heavy rain and flooding today. last storm is going to move through tomorrow night into saturday morning. dry and warmer starting monday. here is a look, heaviest of the rain moving away. scattered showers through the evening and overnight hours in to tomorrow morning's commute. tomorrow afternoon, scattered showers, some of them drying by the time friday evening, next system moves in by midnight and purchases through the heart of the bay during saturday morning. by saturday afternoon, if you have plans outside it should be drier. one to two inches of rain around the bay through saturday. three up in the mountains that is going to cause more flooding and probably more power outages. accu-weather seven-day forecast, let's jump ahead, monday, tuesday and wednesday, that is when the rain stops. 50s along the coast and mid to upper 60s.
