transportation and telecommunication. manpower's survey is on track with the national figures. seeing a tiny increase in job growth so companies are still cautious. >> employers are looking for talent. people who can bring immediate impact to their business, not just looking for jobs. >> even though today's numbers are promising, americans continue to face economic pressures including higher food and gas prices, also home prices continue to remain low and foreclosures are at record levels. >> manpower surveyed 18,000 employers every quarter and for this quarter, 12% say they were looking to hire but 8% said they were going to decrease staffing levels for net increase of 4%. companies are looking to expand but still very cautious and not taking any risks.

the ups plant that he visited alternative fuel saving vehicles. he announced plans to announce a private public partnership to large fleets cut back on gasoline use. >> residents in several bay area cities will see an increase in their sales tax. sales tax in union city and san leandro went to 10% or higher. in concord, the tax rate went up to 9.75%. that means a ten dollar purchase will cost an extra 95 cents. increases were tied to measures approved by voters back in november. cities are relying on those new tier tax rates to help city budgets. >> two celebritys from japan face off each other. it's wore morp than a battle of

>> cheryl: and in japan, japanese and u.s. military ships and helicopters are searching the coastline looking for victims. this could be the last chance to see those that were swept out to sea three weeks ago. nearly 12,000 deaths have been confirmed. it also damaged a nuclear plant that continues to leak radiation despite efforts to control it. scientists say wind and ocean currents will ultimately push some of the massive debris on to the shores of the u.s. west coast sometime in the next year or two. >> back here in california, san francisco giants fan is in critical condition after he was brutally beaten by two l.a. dodger fans following the season opener last night. live in dodger stadium with details. >> reporter: good morning.

fans from both teams are in disbelief but someone was sent to the hospital over a baseball game. police say it started as a verbal fight inside the game between dodger fans and group of giant fans and then turned burial after the game when the -- brutal. >> they say the giant's fan was attacked by behind by two dodger fans. >> taken to the ground and hit his head. they begin to kick him several times and fled the scene. >> the defective says they kicked and punched him several times in the upper torso and in the head. the victim which is from northern california was taken to the hospital in critical condition. >> we wanted to identify the suspects and other possible witnesses involved in this incident. fastball, caught at third by uribe. >> reporter: it puts a dark

confident they will identify the suspects in the next couple of days. >> kristen: thank you so much. >> federal auditors are recommending some of the money be returned $2 million in federal disaster aid that it received after heavy flooding. hundreds of homes and businesses had major damage during those storms. they say the knead followed proper ghreichbs. they conducted the investigation. sonoma county officials tell the press democrat the federal emergency agency reviewed similar concerns and cleared the county of any wrongdoing. in santa cruz, crews have to have a replacement drainpipe installed by tomorrow. the previous pipe ruptured during last week's storms causing massive flooding in

san rafael police are trying to find the driver that crashed into the side of building. no word if there were any injuries, in west oakland, you see smoke coming from the house. this fire broke out around 7:30. none of the residents were hurt. several pets including cats and rabbits were killed. the red cross is helping residents find temporary

shelter. cause of the fire is under investigation. >> san jose city officials are hoping to save $10 million by replacing police officers who currently patrol mineta airport with santa clara county sheriff's deputies. city officials plan to negotiate with the sheriff on a tentative contract that could be voted on by the city council at the end of this month. they also wants to hire a less expensive private company to replace city firefighters stationed at the airport. police and firefighters unions argue that replacing officers and firefighters is a risky experiment. >> kristen: this morning, the highway patrol is looking for a driver that turned a commute into a massive mess on the peninsula. two lanes of highway 101 were closed for almost three hours as crews work t a cable lane. the it created a huge traffic back-up and 280 and 380 and even

>> it's beautiful out there. we're going to see everything today. records and cooler temperatures. that's right. we're seeing a wind shift approaching 50 degrees in the sierra. how about snow going on there. we're talking highs in the lower 60s, northern sierra, back home. you see the high clouds, mount tam pretty mild and except for half moon bay, winds have switched around and temperatures have dropped there at the coast about 2 degrees, elsewhere, we have surpassed our high for today in san francisco but we saw a wind shift, numbers are going to drop. westward to oakland, peninsula, you are going to see temperatures cooler. 72 in mountain view, 70 in san jose. 72 in livermore. here is how you can tell. 24 hours ago, we were actually warmer here. so with the cooler numbers and wind shift we're going to see

cooler weather but here, a little warmer and that westerly wind is not going to make it into our east bay, we'll see more 80s and another warm day. satellite picture, doesn't show much of the high clouds, a few high clouds and not only that we have it all coming our way with the sea breeze. a weak system, a chance of showers and then a windy day on sunday. so we really are going to see an abrupt change to summer like pattern. with a spread as much as 30 degrees through tomorrow where temperatures will be much narrower range. westerly winds dropping off from the 70s to the 60s. 80s well to the south. elsewhere, coming down from 5-9 degrees around the bay later on this afternoon but right now, high pressure slowly trying to slide to the east of us. as it does that is providing the wind shift.

here is small air of low pressure providing a flow and little impulse that will provide slight chance of showers tomorrow. 76 in mountain view. so a little cooler. look at the low 50s at the coast. numbers coming down throughout the next couple ours. down 200, 79 in sonoma. upper 70s in santa rosa. mid to low 70s here. a little sea breeze late in the day. here, a little warmer and 82 in livermore. down by the monterey bay, 82 in hollister. seven-day forecast, just a slight chance of showers in far north bay, maybe marin and you'll feel the cooler air at the coast for sure. then monday and tuesday, we'll modify and maybe a little more rain by the middle of next week. google engineers are getting the last laugh with an april
