they were accused of gang raping a 17-year-old girl. civil cases were brought against some of the boys. some were settled and some dropped. two of the remaining boys went to trial. there was one facing negligence and one was facing negligence, rape and emotional distress. jane doe was seeking $8 million but the majority was cleared of all charges. but a few jurors did not feel comfortable with the decision but in a civil case a majority prevails. >> justice was served and justice wasn't served. we all knew, it was terrible. a girl made a mistake about but these guys should be held accountable. they took advantage of a very

young girl. >> it's been a long road. >> jane doe will hopefully disappear where she came from and we'll go on with our lives but the jury system clearly works. >> the defense attorneys plan to seek money but the families had to pay for attorneys' fees, one attorney, the one you heard from says his costs total about $125,000. again the jury in the civil case came back. they cleared the two remaining men in this gang rape case of all charges and say the two men are not liable to pay anything. in the barry bonds perjury trial attorneys are making their final pitch this morning. closing arguments are underway and jury could be deliberating later today. amy hollyfield has more. >> the first word out of the

prosecutor's mouth, all he had to do was tell the truth. prosecutors are trying to prove that former baseball player barry bonds lied to a federal grand jury when he said he never knowingly took steroids. the government was interviewing bonds in part of an investigation into balco. as part of the closing arguments the prosecutor said that he was given every opportunity to tell the truth and even given immunity as long as he told the truth. he then later said a successful athlete earning $17 million a year doesn't know what he is taking this that is the account that is not plausible on its face. dean johnson has been in the courtroom throughout this trial and even this morning. dean, powerful statements this morning. what did you think? >> i thought was a me they had cal and may be convincing but is

it the compelling statement to find barry bonds guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, i don't think so. >> how do you think the defense will respond? >> i think it's beyond a reasonable doubt. the prosecution comes to the conclusion that barry bonds is guilty that may be one explanation but the defense will say that is not the only explanation and that is not the correct explanation. >> your prediction? >> i think we'll see a acquittal in this case. >> barry bonds did not take the stan in the case and the judge instructed the jury to not form an opinion from that saying that is his right. we haven't heard what else the defense has to say about the case. the defends didn't put any witnesses on the stand under a could argue that speaks volcanos. the defense plans to make a lengthy closing argument later

today and we'll cover that thoroughly in our evening broadcasts. frayed nerves in japan following the second biggest aftershock since the big earthquake. the aftershock measured 7.1. it was centered off the coast of the miyagi prefecture. it shock buildings for more than a minute. it triggered a tsunami warning that caused people to look for higher ground. the warning was soon lifted afterwards. >> there is two things you need to know about aftershocks that apply to japan or any earthquake that we have here. first aftershocks, the frequency decrease rapidly in time, but the magnitude of aftershocks do not decay at all. that means getting a large late aftershock is expected and typical and will continue.

>> japanese officials report who no major damage from this quake around the d fukushima plant. >> the rain falling around the bay area is expected to contain traces of radioactive isotopes coming from the damaged nuclear power plant. they say the precipitating is not expected to be hazardous to your health. environmental protection agency tested rain water last month and showed some radioactive particles that exceeded federal standards but they say it's not a health concern concern. now the rain has been deemed safe, lisa argen has a look at the forecast. >> we're looking at showers, in the east bay and south bay, only 48 in san rafael. you see 33 miles offshore we are

garridos prompted philip garrido to make a surprise guilty plea. he was expected to plead guilty of raping jaycee dugard when she was just 11 years old and holding her captive for two decades. a guilty plea would have spared dugard the pain of a trial. today's problem apparently is over how the grand jurors were selected. his attorney is set up that nancy's attorney is assuming facts about the case that may not be true, that a guilty plea would never agreed to although was talked about. she says she is determine to jealously protect philip's rights and she will not, quote, rollover and play dead.d. nancy's attorney is upset. he was hoping that guilty plea would mean leniency for nancy. >> she does not want pleat to go through.

this video uploaded to abc7 ureport shows a fire moments after it broke out in the mission district last night. 16 people were displaced by the fire. one firefighter suffered a minor injury. it quickly spread to two adjoining buildings. investigators still don't know what sparked that fire. pg&e has restored power to

nearly all of the 225 homes and businesses that lost electricity after a delivery truck hit a power pole in san francisco. it happened after 5:30 this morning at east grand avenue. they are trying to determine what caused the accident. >> homeland security department plans to use facebook and twitter to issue terror alerts. warning system is going to be replaced with two systems of alert. elevated and imminent. the new system is expected to be in place by april 27. the general in charge of a division said by satellite that troop surge is making a difference and strengthening afghan security there and preventing terrorists from striking around the world. >> he said that we feel we are

side. here we are at heavenly. 27 degrees, we have a winter weather advisory in the sierra until 5:00 this afternoon. more snow, anywhere from half a foot at the lower elevations to about ten inches above 7,000 feet. it's pretty sunny. a lot of the rain has been offshore but the camera is shaking. we do have gusty winds all across the bay area. still a few showers, may be a thunderstorm to contend before the afternoon is up. live doppler 7 hd. notice the main activity is offshore and also in the interior around fresno. as we go in closer, about 30 miles is where we have a little precip moving to the south and east. pescadero has rain right now. further south, higher elevations around monterey, rain-snow mix. you saw that earlier and temperatures are cold. anywhere 2,000 feet, 3,000 feet,

we are looking at numbers in the 30. temperatures have not warmed up very much. 48 in san rafael. 52 in mountain view. temperatures, they felt cooler than that and add in the northwest wind gusting to 21 miles an hour, in mountain view, it feels like 26. everyone has a pretty good wind out there. so it's going to be cold overall we are 5-12 degrees cooler. with the cold air in place, the afternoon heating, possibility of a thunderstorm, breezy winds throughout the afternoon and the frost perhaps tonight right on in to friday morning. visible picture a lot of the energy and instability offshore, but this low continues to rotate to the south and east of us today. as it does could trigger off a
