talk to amy hollyfield. >> reporter: even in liberal san francisco president obama is finding that he has to face disappointed democrats here. this breakfast at the st. regis was supposed to be for supporters, it was an expensive breakfast. it was sold out but what he didn't know that some of the people of the audience bought a ticket because they wanted something to protest right there at the breakfast. >> it romantic cost $35,000 to have breakfast and supporters believe it was money well spent. >> the reason i decided to come is i think things are hard for the democrats and obama needs all the support he can get. >> but it wasn't as supportive as the president might have hoped. a group stood up at the table and sang the president a song. ♪ >> no cameras were inside the breakfast but they sang their

song for reporters after being escorted out of the event. >> i supported president obama and i'm still against war. >> a group of protestors gathered outside the hotel demanding that the president legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes. >> he promised us medical marijuana and that is what i'm out to get. >> many weren't making a statement. some decided to work the president's visit into their day. >> i had an appointment downtown and i came to the appointment and i saw the blockades and i thought president obama might be going down the road. so i stayed here for a while and catch a glimpse. >> i'm actually running a seminar over at best western but my participants were so despite about the president coming so i let them out for an hour.

up the steps to air force one and he waved to reporters. there was no crowd here like there was yesterday. air force one took off. this is the first leg of a three-day trip and this was the most extensive trip he's had since he announced his bid for reelection. from here he goes to reno to discuss his plan to reduce the deficit and then later on he flies to los angeles for three more fund-raising events. party sneirdz say they are trying to beat what he raised which was about $730 million. in fact, some speculate they may reach a billion dollars this year. that must be some kind of record. this stopover in san francisco was certainly a good first step. >> cheryl: on to other news of the day.

today, a park will be reopened after a dog died. they shut down because the dog symptoms mick i could those that a dog that eaten poison. crews are cleaning the park and they officially to reopen it at 1:30 this afternoon. >> people with respiratory problems in watsonville are being told to shelter in place. the fire started at apple growers ice and cold storage building. they kept it from spreading but there is thick smoke in the air and there is a possible of a chemical leak inside. the fire chief says crews could be on the scene for two more days watching for flare-ups. right now the popular brand of apple cider is stored at the facility. >> oakland school officials plan to tell hundred teachers they are no longer at risk of being laid off.

the oakland tribune reports that the school district will be able to save 80% of the positions. 35 teachers could still be let go because of budget cuts. dozen teachers will also receive layoff notices. >> a new study finds california's schools could generate billion dollars by taxing soda. they say a one cent per ounce on drinks would raise $233 for every state in state schools. it could be used to fund childhood obesity initiatives. right now a caltrain meeting is under way in san carlos they are expected to vote on a plan to prevent any major service cuts. it will defer $3 million in

planned maintenance. if approved the plan will keep all 86 trains rolling and all stations open for at least another year. the price to ride a trains will increase 25 cents and parking would also increase. >> transit officials are watching the next phase of a new pilot parking program. the goal is to decrease air pollution. drivers can find realtime information about where parking spaces or available in seven neighborhoods. the hope is the access to the information that they will spend less time circling city streets. information will be available through a new free iphone application or by going to the city's website. we have a link on our website at abc7news.com. click on see it on tv. >> now, in the next phase of the parking program, drivers will be able to pay by phone with a credit or debit card and drivers will receive a text message

reminder before a meter expires. that is expected to begin at this summer. >> officials are considering fee for bicyclists. they would not be allowed to go faster than 10 miles an hour on most bridges and dropping to 5 miles an hour. currently there is no speed limit. bicyclists have bone clocked going more than 20 miles an hour and that is contributing to accidents. if approved the chp would enforce the speed limit, violators could be hit with a hundred dollar fine. >> a $1.5 billion plan to redel treasure island could get a big boost today. development features housing for 19,000 people including a 450-foot high-rise apartment building, transit hut and shopping area. 400 affordable house itself had been dropped from the plan.
