it's surreal. >> san francisco's fire chief remembers a veteran firefighter that was killed battling a ferocious house fire in the diamond heights neighborhood. meanwhile, the hospital continues to care for his injured colleague. >> reporter: he is still in

critical condition. they are glad that his condition didn't worsen overnight but they were hoping for progress. >> a uniformed officer has been at the bedside ever since yesterday morning's fire. they are making sure she never alone. >> if we come to the hospital, it would be except for the 300 duty would be in the hospital so we need to coordinate so we don't get in the rest of the way of the hospital. >> they paid the injured firefighter a visit after staying at his bedside late last night. >> he's about the same which is pretty grim but we're all hoping for a miracle. >> he and his colleague lieutenant vincent perez were the first firefighters to rush into the house in the diamond heights neighborhood yesterday morning. they suspect a flashover happened and perez was killed

and the other firefighter is in critical condition. >> we're working out the spot to figure out the cause and origin. if the flashover is something is likely what it was. >> it definitely came as surprise. when she got the text about the fire, she wasn't particularly worried. >> it was a pretty routine fire and we have had much more complicated fire. >> two firefighters were down, it was surreal. >> it was devastating. to have one yesterday and lieutenant perez and still have tony fighting for his life, it's hard to talk about. >> reporter: and since she has been the chief we have often seen her at the scene of fires

but she has been here. she is hoping to get out today to check on the investigation which she promises will be thorough. the fremont fire department is holding a life training exercise showing the dangers they go through. some of the firefighters say they understand the tragedy in san francisco and have been caught in flashovers themselves. terry mcsweeney joins us with the fire facility. >> san francisco may be about 40 miles from fremont but right now what happened there yesterday, the tragedy is in the hearts of the firefighters in the hearts of fremont and especially in the training exercise, especially the ones that entered the building down there. it was about one thousand degrees to try prepare for anything including flashover. >> a fire set by the fremont fire department, a man trapped on the third floor, that is the scenario. the first in, do the attack,

second truck up, water supply the third, ventilation to minimize flashover and the fourth, a crew on to respond to any downed firefighters. city and bay officials as the fire department builds stronger relationships with them and also the department wants to educate these officials about what firefighters do. the deputy chief it should educated all of us to be caught in a flashover several years ago. >> i felt the heat increase significantly and saw literally a flash of orange around the mask and next thing i knew i woke up outside. >> how far were you knocked down? >> i was knocked across the room and there were other crews entering the door at the time. >> the good news they grabbed him and got him out of there. if he was knocked in a different direction, nobody could see him

and it could be a similar situation what happened yesterday. this whole scenario, to it will state officials what firefighters do every day and the flag is at half-staff in honor of the fallen firefighter here in san francisco. other news, we're expecting record rain today and tomorrow. mike nicco is in the weather center with live doppler 7-hd. you've seen the first drops of the storm yet? >> we still expect them to move in around noon around the north bay and the rest of us, you see radar returns already developing over around the coast but those have yet to rotate towards us. you can see the clouds have been thickening diagnose ready to drop but really haven't until you go up to the north of us. pretty heavy showers around eureka and these showers are going to continue heading to the northeast. we need to look down to the south and west where the storms and then they'll rotate to the

northeast. so this initial line right here, that is the one that is going to move in the north bay at noon and more storms developing behind it and rest of us will get it late in the afternoon and evening hours. once it starts, it won't stop for a while. i'll show you how long it will last a short time ago a commissioner dismissed the parole violation charges against manny ramirez. ramirez could still be charged in the case but right now he remains in jail for unrelated parole violations. meanwhile, his daughter has told police he was with her during the day of the attack. the mother said she wanted to speak with investigators. >> they were very upset. mom, can i go talk to them and let them know he was with me

sleeping all day. >> they arrested him for assault with a deadly weapon in the stow beating. prosecutors have not charged him. stow remains in serious serious condition at san francisco general hospital. >> they sentenced a man for 44 years to kill annie lay. he apologized for the murder. the body was found behind the lab wall five days after she was last seen. the judge told her you took the life of a promising young woman and destroyed the lives two of families. the family of missing nursing student in the bay area, michelle le has increase today $40,000. they will hold a vigil in hayward for le one week after she disappeared. she was last seen at kaiser hospital in hayward. she went to get something from her car in the garage but never returned.

le's car was later found not far from the hospital. >> the city of san jose and its police union have reached a tentative deal that will save the jobs of 156 officers at risk of being laid off. the package just announced calls for 10% across the board compensation cuts for officers but more than a hundred officers will still be let go. and it agrees to outsource airport police. the latest jobs report says employers added the fewest jobs last month in eight months. employers added only 54,000 new jobs in may. national unemployment rate inched up to 9.1% and it was 9.0. >> the data flow has turned more negative, that is due to the surge in oil and food prices, declining house prices and the ill effects of the japanese

around the evening commute. if you are leaving the house right now, we are running in the low 50s for fairfield and concord and fremont and eastward. and as you get away from the bay upper 50s, low 50s for gilroy and salinas. a weather afternoon evening commute. record rain possible tonight. showers sunday and monday and can have dry and warmer for tuesday and wednesday and thursday. 70 in antioch. warm spot, mid to upper 50s in most areas until you get closer to the coast. mid 50s around the monterey bay, inland upper 50s to low 70s. i think you'll be dry during the daylight hours. it will rain at the game. rockies and giants, first pitch if it happens, it will be about 57 degrees. once the rain starts, it doesn't stop and then warm weather comes in with it.

low to mid 50s and mid to upper 40s in the north bay. either a strong june storm. it's starting to take a little bit of a left hand turn so it's almost here. it's going to keep raining. we'll haveve a few light showers through the afternoon hours, especially the north bay and 7:00 you see the darker greens and look how they become yellow. even more intense through tomorrow morning where it's moving through the east bay. we do see a little bit of break starting to develop during the afternoon hours, so tomorrow's day game more likely to happen than tonight's game but still it may start a little bit late because of the rain. heaviest rain will be moving away during the evening hours but it returns in the form of showers and waves and waves of showers. look at these rainfall amounts. everywhere you see green, south bay, you are going to get three-quarters of an inch. temperatures will be cool and then 70s return tuesday,

wednesday and thursday. a group of oakland residents joined an unusual funeral tonight. it's being hold to protest the possible closure of 14 branches of the oakland library. common straighters will gather at 7:00 tonight at 20th and broadway carrying library books. the mayor has proposed cutting 14 of the 18 branch libraries to help balance the city's budget. if a proposal is approved, as many as 92 jobs will be cut. >> here is n san francisco, water customers personal information may have been compromised. they say a hacker got in to a server and it gave access to a file with customers names, account numbers, addresses and phone numbers but no financial information. the puc says there is no evidence any information has been stolen but the agency has been notifying customers. >> mike will be back with
