good morning. i'm cheryl jennings. >> i'm kristen sze. the bay area is getting hit today with a rare june storm. a powerful one at that. >> check out the wet commute on the golden gate bridge. and all the fog there. windshield wipers getting a work-out. as rain falls on the span to make walking treacherous and walking equally challenging. >> you drove across it. after today's rain, this june is the third wettest on record in downtown san francisco. here is what it looks like in the north bay city of novato coming down hard. >> mike nicco in the weather center. records today? >> i think so. especially in san francisco.

took us 15 minutes to get .12 of an inch and it's still raining heavily as you can see by the yellows moving through downtown san francisco. if it rains at the same clip for 15 minutes, we set a daily record maximum rainfall for june 28 here. looks like it will remain pretty dry, at least as far as the records go in the north bay. we had to get to .07 around santa rosa. you can see the minority around there. still an impressive day. east bay, going rain, what rain? it's coming. it will be slow but it will make a way toward you. it could affect the evening commute. especially in the south bay and east bay valleys. show the big picture and you can see how the individual cells are moving from southwest to northeast. how the line is sinking southeast. everybody will get rain today. we will set records. we need .02 in san jose to tie a record. we'll update that and give you a full forecast with an in the weekend coming your way. cheryl has news. >> we'll see you later on. california legislature will

start voting today on the budget with a goal of having it signed by the governor by the start of the fiscal year. democrats say they can pass it on a simple majority vote. don't need republican support. capital correspondent nannette miranda joins us from sacramento with more. >> reporter: the third time may be the charm. later this afternoon, the legislature is set to vote on the budget for for third time this year. and will try to pass a state budget just before the fiscal year starts. yesterday, governor brown and democratic leaders came to an agreement on how to close the remaining $10 billion deficit. remember because california voters approved prop 25 last november, democrats can pass budgets now with a simple majority vote. two-third vote is needed to pass taxes. that forced governor brown to face up to the reality having to abandon a plan for temporary tax hikes for five more years. because he was unable to secure two republican votes in each house. now it's on to plan "b."

heavily relies on $4 billion in tax wind fall. hoping for a better economy. if it does not materialize, automatic cut would occur for public schools. they will take a hit, $1.5 billion in cuts. some economists think since the economy is doing better these days, the tax revenue will come in and there is a chance it might not. democrats say this is the best they could do. >> i thought we were getting close but looking back, there is a religious reluctance to deal with the state budget in a way that requires new revenues. >> they can say what is cut or not cut and so if schools close for a week, it's their

decision rather than making cuts in other places to make more sense. >> now sense there are no new taxes in the budget, it's not expected that the budget voting will take that long. should wrap up for the new fiscal year to begin july 1. live in sacramento, nannette miranda, abc7 news. >> thanks a lot. in oakland, the city council is having closed door meetings this morning and a public hearing tonight to discuss tentative agreements made with four major unions. the city is trying to close a $58 million budget deficit. the police and fire unions along with the other publavoid p cuts to city services. that includes libraries, parks and the arts. members of each union still need to approve the deal before the july 1 budget deadline. spring buying boosted home prices in more than a dozen major u.s. cities including san francisco. it's the first time prices have risen in eight months.

standard & poor's case shiller home index says the prices rose in 13 of the 20 cities it tracks. washington, d.c. saw the biggest increase in april followed by san francisco, atlanta and seattle. despite good news, prices were down 4% from time last year. most of the improvement was likely because of the traditionally busy spring and summer home buying seasons. they say it was too early to tell if it was a turning point in the market. 300 jobs are up for grabs beginning within the hour at a job fair sponsored by abc7. employers representing different fields will be looking for qualified candidate at the solano county hire event. our amy hollyfield is there live in suisun city to give us a preview. what positions are open? >> reporter: the big headline here today is medical jobs. the big superstar of the event will be at this table over here. st. helena hospital will bring with it 100 jobs. they just got the call late yesterday afternoon, the st. helena hospital would be

coming. not only coming but bringing 100 jobs. the job fair organizer told me she was thrilled when she got the call. they have been setting up for a noon start at the nelson community center in suisun city. they promise the employers are not allowed at the fair unless they have job openings. so eight companies will be here with about 300 jobs.. they say comparing this fair to the one they had here in september it appears things are looking up. >> i think we're slowly seeing more jobs. the most important thing that i've been seeing is that the employers who are coming to job fairs this year are very serious about hiring. we've had one event where we had one company to interviewed 56 people and hired 12. >> there is something for everyone here. there are jobs for laborers, nurses, bankers and even teachers are needed at the university of phoenix.

austerity measures brought the country to a stand still. police fired back canisters of tear gas and stun grenades. the latest austerity measures must pass in two votes tomorrow and thursday. if greece is set to receive another batch of bail-out funds. if they fail, greece could become the first euro zone nation to default on the debt. >> soldier from the bay area has died in the war in afghanistan. 28-year-old specialist kevin tillerman of albany tied june 26. he was injured when the insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire. the awards and decor rations include -- decorations include bronze star medal, purple heart. army achievement medal. he joined march 2003 of infantry man. this was his third deployment overseas. >> police say two brothers confessed to stab two men at a car wash. it happened last night. the owner of the car wash looked at the surveillance

more than 2,000 counterfit giants items are going on a road trip. terry mcsweeney joins us from the u.s. customs house in san francisco. what is this all about? >> well, show and tell here at the customs house on battery near washington. customs agent showing off

some of the more than 20,000 counterfit items that they confiscated last year in the playoffs and the world series. out near at&t park. telling the media why it's important for all of us in the united states they took this stuff off the streets. take a look at what we're all watching last fall. who can forget the giants in the playoffs and then the world series going on to the world championship. while everyone is watching what is going on inside the park. you had u.s. customs homeland security investigators outside the park. busting folks selling shirts, flags, buttons, et cetera. one problem is the theft of intellectual property. look at the logo, the giants logo. the nike logo. the sales of goods with those trademarked items should benefit those who created or trademarked them. also, agents say the counterfeit items could cost americans jobs. >> general win shirts are made by americans. so theoretically you are putting an american out of work because someone is

buying a shirt counterfeit rather than a genuine shirt. it affects jobs ultimately. in this economy, every job counts. >> for the cherry on top of the story what do you do with 20,000 plus items with giants logo on them? send them to haiti. a double play. customs sending the items to world vision, relaying them to love a child, christian humanitarian agency which works exclusively in haiti. it should be there in time for the 2011 world series. now the u.s. customs agents do this kind of thing all the time. 20,000 seizures last year. that is up 34% from the year before. if you take all the items they seized, we are talking about electronics, drugs and toys and shirts, et cetera. you add them up at the retail value. comes out to $1.4 billion. live in san francisco, terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. >> terry, thanks a lot. san francisco community group is trying to push the idea of a free muni system. a group called power today will ask riders at mission and geneva what they think

take a look at this. massachusetts teen survived a 20-foot fall from an escalator. surveillance video caused the 18 right there climbing on the hand rail on sunday. and as he reached the top boom. he fell over the edge. hit the concrete floor. he told police he had been drinking and admitted to being irrespopsable. the teen suffered a

practured elbow. look at this one. in china, crews rescued a 5-year-old boy who was stuck between two walls after playing hide and seek. crews had to use circular saw and an ax to free the boy. the grandfather says he slid down a gap in two walls and became stuck. he was okay after rescuers pulled him out. boy was he happy to see the family. >> wipe away tears. it was raining so hard when i drove to work today. i couldn't believe it. shocked. >> not supposed to happen this time of the year. if it does, it's a record, who is what we have in front of us. living through history again weather wise. and take a look outside to show what is going on. emeryville, sprinkles right now. the heavier rain is knocking on the door. it should be steadier and heavier in the next couple of hours. one more shot. battery street. too bad you can't put up

coast. north bay. everywhere else, low to mid-60s. monterey bay. 56 in santa cruz. 17 in gilroy. wet and cool day with up thisseder possible. the showers taper tonight. heat wave for the weekend. warmest weather to south bay and east bay valley. low and mid-70s there. monterey bay, showers. steadier rain is possible in the evening hours but more like drizzle, nuisance. we have showers at coliseum. it may be delayed for first pitch but then it will dry. we will drop in the low to mid-50s overnight. this is the biggest punch from the cold front as it moves in the bay area right now. you can see the heaviest rain falling from now until 5:00 when it moves in the south bay. look how quickly it falls apart by 11:00. overnight, a scattering of showers. we may have a few leftover showers tomorrow. especially in the north bay mountains. everybody else should start clearing by the latter part

of the afternoon and in the evening hours. rainfall amounts. the most impressive in north bay. three-quarters of an inch. quarter of an inch for rest of us. until you get to south bay. holding on to tenth of an inch. temperatures, they jump 10 degrees thursday. it will be cool tomorrow. even with afternoon sunshine. jump another 15 degrees on sunday. that is the hottest day of the weekend. 100 inland. 90 around the bay. 70 at the coast. there is the next heat wave right in time for the holiday weekend. >> try to keep up a pace in two or three seasons in one week. >> we have it all here. >> thank you. federal ban of drop-side cribs goes into effect today. these are cribs with a side rail that can be raised and lowered to allow parents to place or lift up a baby more easily. the rails can detach and the babies have become trap and are blamed for 32 deaths and suspected in 14 others. any federal rule bans manufacturering, sale or resale of the drop-side cribs. it mandates more rigorous safety testing for all

cribs. makers of a controversial breast cancer drug are asking food and drug administration to reconsider a ruling revoking it. the fda withdrew the approval of abotston last year because of a dangerous side effect. but the advocates say that it's one of the few treatments available for women with late stage breast cancer. fda approved the drug to treat other cancers but without fda approval, insurance will not cover the drug for breast cancer and a year's treatment can cost $100,000. a new consumer study finds filling prescriptions in big-name pharmacies can be troubling or dangerous. consumer report sent secret shoppers in five pharmacies that you can see on the screen in new york. they had them fill prescriptions for the blood thinker. target received the best mark for clear labelling. only costco included required fda medication guide.
