a wild ride on wall street today as stocks swing up and down, following yesterday's 500-point plunge. here is what it looks like right now. after a better-than-expected report on adding new jobs. good morning. i'm cheryl jennings. >> i'm eric thomas. economists say the jobs is encouraging but not enough to ease worries of investors. the nation's unemployment rate dropped from 9.2 to 9.1%. california unemployment rate is 11.8%. abc7's terry mcsweeney joins us from the employment development department in san francisco with more. terry? >> at the employment office, folks aren't so much concerned about the big picture jobs report. they're more concerned about the job report as in the one

that will turn their personal economy around. earlier, i was at the san francisco floor of the new york stock exchange where desplat -- despite the headline may ham in the market, they say to buy more stocks. as the dow jones went up and down every way this morning, brokers took it in stride. traders know august through october is the slow season. they have huge stocks to the sideline. the initial enthusiasm about the drop in the unemployment rate was tempered by the details of the job report. >> then you read the numbers more and there are less people looking for work. they are looking for report on the development branch. as he expects, construction job in the near future. >> years ago, it was kind of iffy, with the budget cuts and stuff. a lot of jobs sent out were canceled due to the budget cuts. too many people working on the job. now i see the construction going on around here to look

like it's opening back up. >> the most optimism came from frank reynolds. nine months ago he was jobless, homeless, drug addict addict addicted veteran. >> i'm going to truck driving school to get my license and all of that. it will make my job situation better. >> back at home, free advice for those worried about their future and 401(k)s. >> if you are under 50, this is a wonderful opportunity to keep buying equity. they will go back. americans are not going anywhere. we're the gold standard. >> i was talking to the manager down there at the san francisco floor of the new york stock exchange. he tells me that the dow jones pretty much has a season. november through may is the growing season. stocks going up. the rest of the year, they go down. kind of like there is a season to every purpose under heaven. i didn't expect to end this

million unemployed veterans in the united states. one-fourth of them enlisted after the september 11 terrorist attack. a 9-year-old boy is now reported in critical condition, after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while leaving the giants game. a woman was injured. at this hour, suspect was in custody. amy hollyfield is live at san francisco general where the young victim is treated. amy? >> the parents are by their side. they're in town from philadelphia. they were here for the giants-phillies game last night. it was on their way home from the game that the boy was hit by the truck. police arrested 21-year-old andrew vargas of hayward. they found him in hayward a couple hours after the crash. he's charged with leaving the scene. dui. they think he was over the legal limit. and open container. he's in jail. the bail is set at $65,000. police have 15 witnesses, some went to hayward where he was arrested to identify his truck. the accident happened in san

francisco. downtown. mission and new montgomery. witnesses say after the boy was hit in the crosswalk, the truck then went on to plow to several cars on mission street. before that, he had been driving the wrong way on new montgomery, which is a one-way street. a woman was also hit last night, her foot was run over. she is okay. she is from granite bay. the boy is in critical condition. she is at the -- he is at san francisco general hospital suffering from head injuries. >> thank you very much. the san jose police are investigating an early morning murder. they were called to 4200 block of albany drive just after 2:30 this morning on reports of a stabbing, as they arrived they say a 48-year-old man identified him as the suspect and was arrested. minutes later, they found a woman stabbed to death in a nearby apartment. police say it's clear that the two new each other and believe it could be result

domestic dispute. they have seen a troubling rise in homicide. 29 in san jose in 2011 compared to just 20 at the same time last year. oakland's police chief now says he is congesting posting the pick -- he is going to help convince potential customers stay away from oakland. it came as the community group unveil billboards on yesterday meant to discourage prostitution along international boulevard. it asks for men cruising for prostitutes, what would they do if it were their daughter working the street? police chief batts says he is considering a plan to use dear john letters to those loitering along the international boulevard. >> chief batts says eight more of the officers laid off last year will be returning to the department in the next few weeks. oakland tribune reports 42 of the 80 laidoff officers will return if all goes as

ed lee is helping the burning man project launch non-profit in the city today. the "san francisco examiner" says they plan to build urban cultural center in the city to provide gallery spaces, classroom and sites for ceremonies. the black rock art foundation putting on the burning man counterculture festival announced they are going to relocate on sixth and market street. it's a massive week long art and performance festival in the black rock desert that attracts tens of thousands of participants. today, the senate passed a temporary fix to get the

aviation workers back on the job. that includes dozens of construction workers building a new tower at the oakland international airport. they are expected to resume work on monday. we report on how the maneuver only took two senators. >> relief is on the way for 4,000 federal aviation employees and more than 70,000 construction workers who lost their paychecks when the agency funding expired almost two weeks ago. a bipartisan compromise reached yesterday cleared the way for the senate to approve a house bill extenting the faa operating authority through mid-september. the senate took that action this morning. >> the motion to reconsider on the table with no intervening action or debate. >> hearing no objection, so ordered. >> most senators have already left for august recess. but it only took two senators 47 seconds to approve the measure of what is known as pro forma session. president obama is expected to sign the bill as soon as it gets to his desk. the partisan standoff that

led the shut down cost the government enormous money. while the lawmakers were arguing how to save $16 million a year, they were actually losing $30 million a day in uncollected airline ticket taxes. during the stalemate, the government and the taxpayer lost almost $400 million. >> this is an example of a self-inflicted wound that is unnecessary. >> everybody wants to play hardball. hardball hurt us. >> furloughed workers should be back to work monday morning. the nearly 250 abandoned airport construction projects will resume. but many faa employees say the damage has already been done. >> i think congress -- [ inaudible ] every person at home right now. >> the i.r.s. and treasury said it would be up to congress to decide if the government would recoup the lost taxes from the airline. the travellers should still recoup the taxes for the flights they took.

scientists say a new lava flow has begun at kilauea and has been erupting for three decades.

experts say it doesn't pose a hazard to residents in hawaii. it started oozing on wednesday, half a mile. kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanos and has been erupting since january 1983. a sewlar powered -- solar powered spacecraft left for jupiter. iggest planet ke five years in the solar system. this is a picture tweeted by nasa earlier in morning. it will be powered by three huge solar panels and set the record by the farthest distance traveled by spacecraft. others relied on nuclear energy. they hope to figure out how the earliest planets formed by studying jupiter. >> a lot to learn here. >> the physics is crazy. it has to orbit the sun for a year and come back to earth.

sunshine there partial sunshine in the city. well below the averages. upper 80s. low 80 in livermore. 70 should do it in oakland. 68, i should say. should be 70. mid-70s in san jose. a couple of area of low pressure through the weekend to allow for the cool number and return of drizzle and fog. sunday we will get on the back side of this and early in the week we'll warm up. first weekend of august. following suit for the cooler than average temperatures all summer long. this is getting used to it. the highs tempered with the upper 80s this week.

from vandals stealing copper. the school board voted to solicit bids from security firms providing patrol to protect the property. need a high-tech tool to track down a missing child? thanks to the f.b.i. there is now an app for that. the federal bureau of investigation created the child i.d. app for the iphone. it allows parents to electronically store photos and vital information about their children so they can access it quickly if a child disappears. it provides a quick link to emergency services so parents can alert authorities about a possible abduction. the child i.d. app can be downloaded for free at apple's itunes app store. pacifica dog owners could find out if they received enough vote to win a contest to bring new park to the community. they have been working to get a dog park built in pacifica and they found the per sect spot bend the city recreation center, but need the money.
