getting off to a bad start for some drivers in the east bay. sky 7hd is live over a huge back up on northbound interstate 880 in oakland just south of west grand avenue. the crash involves two big rigs and we are told about 40 gallons of oil spilled on to the roadway. as a consequence, one of the drivers was injured. you can see the result. this back up stretching for at least a couple of miles. the highway patrol has shut

down two of the northbound lanes while the tractor-trailers are removed, and cal trans cleans up the oil spill. now it isn't known when these lanes will be reopened, but folks trying to get into san francisco from northbound 880 or out of town for the holiday weekend, well, they have to negotiate this, a huge back up in the east bay. we will keep monitoring it. we have sky 7hd over it live, and you can see some of the consequences, trucks still there and barely one lane getting through on the right side of the traffic lanes there. we'll keep you informed. of course i'm eric thomas. kristen is off today. a dismal jobs report. the labor department says the economy lost as many jobs it is a created in august keeping the unemployment rate at 9.1%. it is the weakest report. it is the first time since february of 1946 and the first

america, j.p. morgan chase and goldman sachs and deutsche bank. the finance agency accuses them of misrepresenting the quality of mortgage-backed securities that lost value when the housing market collapsed. the securitys that were backed by the sub prime and other risky loans, brut -- but were labeled safe investments were at the heart of the issue in this case. for the second time in a year federal investigators are looking into a natural gas line explosion involving pg&e. pictures show how wednesday's blast damaged this cupertino condominium and even left small fires burning in the yard. nick smith is live with more on this story. >> pg&e didn't have an ability to stop. so they had to cutoff the gas, and you can see pg&e crews gathered behind me to continue their work.

>> sky 7hd captured these imagesthat burned for more than an hour and a half after the pg&e crews arrived to cutoff the flow of gas that caused an explosion and fire that would eventually level this garage and destroy this condo. >> they are really doing their jobs. that's what i'm asking. it seems that this can happen anywhere. this is very close to home when it hits you at home. it is very scary. >> they are trying to uh assuage the fierce of residents by going door-to-door to perform inspections. when the crews examined thes leo they found a total of seven leaks feeding into and around the home. >> you understand gas explosions make people inherently uncomfortable? >> yes. they found no one was hurt and we are thankful for that as well. >> it came on the heels of criticism by the ntsb the day before for pg&e's handling of the deadly san bruno blast last september.

that explosion killed eight people. >> we understand there are a lot of questions and concerns about what happened the other night. >> because of the san bruno explosion and an explosion in 2008 where sacramento county man was killed, federal investigatorsare taking an interest in the pg&e gas leak. >> they are engaged and really focused and committed to improving gas safety on our transmission and distribution system. >> residents expressing concern, and you can see a hole in the roof of that building as this place has been destroyed. they tell me they are concerned because pg&e crews have thousands of miles of pipe running underneath the bay area and beyond. live in cupertino, nick smith, abc news. >> thank you very much. in san jose, a police officer just made his first court appearance to face child molestation charges. he is accused of having sex with two teenage boys ages 15 and 17 at his gilroy home a few minutes ago. he entered a plea of not

guilty to the charges. investigators say he served minors alcohol, and he was releaseed on $100,000 bail yesterday. investigators believe there may be more victims in the case, more possible victims. dur gi o has been an officer with the san jose police department since 1984. they are recovering fewer guns, but that's not good news. you are look at some of the 3,000 weapons in the department storage locker. it is not because there were fewer guns on the streets. it is because there are fewer officers to gather them. a year ago, the department lost 80 officers to budget cuts. some have been rehired and they are authorized to add 20 more. it is a problem for a city with a rising homicide rate ?ie. many folks are heading to the beaches, but authoritiese warning about high waves pounding the california coast. some beaches in southern california had waves as high

as 11 feet yesterday. these waves are being generated by powerful storm off new zealand. mike is here with more on the surf advisory and the spare the air alert we have as well. >> thank you very much. good morning. welcome to friday and welcome to rough surf down in southern california. wanted to show you this first. th is where you can see in blue the high surf advisory. the advisory continues through and continues until sunday evening. there are some rip currents possible. right now we have four-foot waves in san francisco, but seven and eight around half moon bay and monterey bay. watch out for those southern facing beaches like stinson beach will be the ones most likely to see some of these dangerous waves. let's talk about spare the air as we head into the friday and into saturday. watch out in the inland areas of the east bay and santa clara valley. that's where the poorest of the air quality will sit. we'll talk about the hot

moines, iowa. you can see officers running toward this burning suv, fighting the flames to pull out the people trapped inside. the accident and the rescue happened on sunday, but the tape was just released. police say a car ran a red light and crash need a ford explorer. as you can see them there standing on top of the burning vehicle trying to pull a person out. the driver of the explorer was killed. five people were hospitalized. police arrested the suspected it red light runner. an expensive machine designed to make it safe other air planes can't tell the difference between per spir ration and a bomb. they tested bomb scanning machines for months and they found out more often than not it read body sweat as explosives which is not what you want from a $170,000 machine. >> the german experience has demonstrated exactly how ineffective the devices are. they can't distinguish between body sweat and explosives or the pleats in a traveler's

pants and an underwear bomb. it is not making anyone safer. >> the machines are being used at 40 airports across the u.s. including san francisco international. the u.s. just issued a worldwide travel alert ahead of the 10th anniversary of the september 11th attacks. the alert cautions americans about the continued threat posed by al-qaeda and other terrorist groups. however, the state department says it has no specific threat to the u.s. officials are encouraging all u.s. citizens living or traveling abroad to take precautions. americans are thinking twice about traveling this weekend. triple-a says the number of americans who travel at least 50 miles from home this weekend will fall more than 2% to more than 31 million. experts say high unemployment and expensive gas and high hotel prices and the hassles of getting a seat on crowded planes are keeping travelers closer to home and families are trying to squeeze in one last get away.

is a spare the air day. the dangerous surf will be with us most of the weekends. it will be mild to warm as we head through this holiday weekend. mild at the coast to warm inland. everybody is going out from san francisco. 3 degrees to fremont the biggest jump. and it pushes all of our temperature usa buff average from 3 degrees in redwood city and then 8 degrees warmer than average. sunset is 7:30. mid-nineties throughout the east bay valleys. low to mid80s for most of the east bay shore. mid to upper 70s in berkeley. but campbell and los gatos and saratoga could be in the low to mid-nineties. peninsula, lot sunshine and low to mid80s. half moon bay and pacifica, mid to upper 60s. mid70s downtown. sausalito 78. most of the north bay valley is in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees in santa rosa. mid60s at your beaches. mid to upper 60s in monterey

story to report to you. sky heavy hd is live over the san francisco antique and design mall and bay shore boulevard where apparently a huge burglary took place overnight. at 3:30 this morning the manager reported he had an alarm going off, a motion alarm. when he got there he found everything inside was ransacked. antiques, jewelry and art work were missing. no estimate on a value of the items that were taken. san francisco police were on the scene right now trying to gather evidence about the case and find out who was responsible. no suspect information right now, but anybody with information about the burglary here at the san francisco antique mall on bay shore boulevard is ask asked to call san francisco police. don't be surprised if you see groups of people lighting up joints in front of oakland city hall without police break toping or making arrest --

breaking -- breaking it up or making arrests. it is a cannabis fair with booths and vendors and speakers. most of the attention will be in front of city hall with people with a valid medical cannabis card can smoke legally thanks to an agreement with oakland city officials. the two-day event starts on saturday at noon. in next story may be hard to hear who need that morning jolt to wake up. british researchers found the fixes you get from the cup of joe may be in your head. participants were given coffee they thought had caffeine, but it was decaf. they still noticed improvement in people's pearl form mans and mood and some did even better on tests than those who drank the decaffeinated coffee. the study is published in the journal "appetite." up next, friday's perfect pet. mike will introduce us to a new friend. @
