good morning, i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm kristen sze. >> a dire warning from the financially crippled u.s. postal service, the agency says it's go to default on a $5.5 billion payment and may november shut down entirely a few months from now if congress doesn't take emergency action. amy hollyfield is live at the

san francisco post office. >> reporter: post office officials say they are ready for fight. they know that important documents such as college acceptance letters flow flu flew the system so they are ready to fight and hoping that congress will save them. they have an important hearing tomorrow they will plead their case. two big issues. they need to be able to decide when they can knriv. they would like to do it five days a week instead of six days. it would save them $3 billion a year. they also need to be able to recover some other things. official year ends september 30th and they are up against the deadline. congress? recess so officials don't know if lawmakers will be willing to help them. but without their help they say they are in serious trouble. >> our situation is definitely dire.

we need to do get some of the things we're asking for, but it's not all doom and gloom. there is hope out for the postal service and i know we will get through the situation. >> reporter: and they say by september 30th, quote it would come to a point where postal service would have to close its doors, but we continue to work with congress and expect there will be a solution eventually. so there is a lot of optimism this will work out. there is had a lo lot to hope for, they owe $5.5 billion in bills and they have to get it paid by september 30th or they have to default on their loan so they will need that help from congress. a big hearing will be coming up. in detroit, michigan, president obama wrapped up a

speech previewing his ideas for economic growth. he spoke at a labor day rally with union members. it's serving as a dress rehearsal for the address he'll deliver on thursday night. today's appearance follows last friday's dismal jobs report which showed u.s. employers added no new jobs in august. the president is urging congress to work together. >> the time for washington games is over. the time for action is now. no more manufactured crisis, no more games. now, the time for people you sent to washington, now is the time to worry about your jobs. >> we will air the president's speech live here on thursday. it's expected to begin at 4:00 p.m.. a 9/11 video that has never been seen by the public is just surfacing showing the moments right after san francisco flight

93 crashed in a field in thanksfield, pennsylvania. >> airplane crashed over on the road and bomb on board blew it up. i don't know anything more than that. that is what i heard on the scanner. it came up and the explosion shook the house. >> the man you heard on that video is now dead and his family decided to turn the video over to several news organizations because but they want to remain anonymous ai none miscellaneous. officials believe the terrorists had wanted to crash the plane into the white house but a group of passengers stormed the cockpit and prevented the hijackers from accomplishing their mission. >> this morning there is a new terror alert as we approach tenth anniversary of 9/11

attacks. this time it involves airplanes much smaller than what were used on the pentagon and washington. small planes could be the weapons of choice for terrorists to strike again on the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacksw enforcement agencies around the country and reaching out to small airfields like this one in indianapolis. >> i don't think small airports are that big of a threat. they don't carry as much of a threat. >> but authorities are taking no chances. a senior official says al-qaeda has continuing interest in obtaining aviation training particularly on small aircraft and is recruiting europeans and americans. >> these planes are small. you can't put a huge device on them but the or side of that is, if you put some biological or chemical agent in them clearly

abc7 morning news from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. >> a u.s. army army specialist has died of rabies several months from returning from rabies. he died at a state hospital. the 24-year-old joined the army in february 2009 and was deployed to afghanistan when he served as cook for one year. investigators are still trying to determine exactly how and where he con tlaktd ra biegs. officials say they continues to believe he got the illness in new york. we're learning pg&e will begin removing some 6,000 feet of a cracked gas pipe that is blamed for an explosion and fire that gutted a cupertino home last week. officials have learned there it was made of material that has a history of failure. the plastic pipe was involved in a number of lawsuits. pg&e says it will begin of review of 1200 miles of similar

pipe statewide. puc is also launching an investigation. firefighters in moraga made quick work of a grass fire. that broke out along bollinger canyon road. it scorched about 15 acres before firefighters contained it. fire officials say no homes were threatened and no injuries were reported. residents said they had brief power outages right where the fire broke out and they say downed power lines may have been the cause. firefighters will stay on the scene to make sure it doesn't flare-up again. >> the group anonymous is planning to stake another bart protest in downtown san francisco today. this the fourth time they are planning to protest on a monday. they say they are upset about the shooting death of a homeless man by bart police and also shutting down cellphone service. last monday demonstrators didn't disrupt train service but they

promised to keep up the demonstrations until bart disbands its police force and just a few of these for cutting off cellphone service. >> in san francisco, parking meters will still be enforced but tow away zones will not be. caltrain is also on a sunday school and there is no service south of san jose. >> california supreme court is expected to hear arguments in the battle over same-sex marriage. the question before the panel is whether state law gives proposition 8 sponsors the right to appeal the federal court ruling that found the ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional. the sponsors of prop 8 may not have the legal stand to go appeal since the governor and attorney general have refused to do so. the state supreme court will have 90 days to issue its opinion after tomorrow's hearing. >> a new hit for honda.

honda is recalling nearly one million cars worldwide. more than 930,000, 2006 and 2005

models are being recalled because of a power window problem. 26,000 crz hybrid models are also being recalled. honda says no serious injuries or accidents have been reported but it will affect customers about the recalls later this month. this is the second major recall for honda and further set back for the japanese car maker as it struggles to recover from sluggish sales and heavy criticism of the redesigned civic. >> this morning, a family is vowing to search for loved ones still missing after a fishing boat tragedy. a tourist fishing boat capsized in the sea of cortez, one body was recovered and seven men remain missing all from one family. lee family recently hired a private boat and crew to do a sonar search of 13 square miles of ocean. that search turned up nothing.

they had hoped to find the boat and whether to send divers to the remains. >> while some parts of the u.s. are dealing with too much water, others are wishing they have mother. a wildfire near austin has burned more than 17,000 acres. they say the fire is making it unsafe to battle it from the ground. it's one of several wildfires crews are facing across the drought stricken state. this is what it looked like on oil rig, as tropical storm lee hit the coast. the storm is now on tropical depression is still dumping steady rain causing scattered flooding and power outages and some evacuations. authorities say a man drowned in mississippi when he was swept away by floodwaters. the storm dumped more than 14 inches of rain in some areas. forecasters warn the slow moving system could cause more flooding in areas where there are hills

take a look at whale watchers dream across the southern california coast. sister station took aerial picture of two blue whales, possibly a mother and calf swimming off the coast. speculation the whales are staying in the area because it's

hopping shortly. you can see how quickly the clouds are erasing and a matter of time before they are out of north bay valleys and probably another hour or two before its out of the bay around santa cruz. only 70s around a antioch and upper 50s to low 60s along the north bay with mid-50s around san francisco and oakland. 65 with sunshine in san jose. you see the 68 in gilroy. once the sun finally comes out it's going to warm up rather nicely. highlights for this forecast, talk about sunshine around the bay today. cloudy and cool can he coast. middle of the week, warming with more sunshine out to the coast and then we'll have more clouds and a cooler trend for the weekend. so we're going here and here and here. today we're going up just a little bit. three in concord. five in oakland and san francisco. 6 in san jose. about 8 degrees in santa rosa

sweep of the mariners and, high clouds and comfortable, 67 warming up to 70 degrees. if you are heading around the state today, 77 with sunshine in tahoe but thunderstorms down around l.a., palm springs and san diego. still goto be warm outside of those thunderstorms. 106 in palm springs. i don't think we'll see as much cloud cover, the bay itself will be cover in clouds. temperatures in the 50s. looking into the future, right light offshore wind but tomorrow and wednesday as temperatures jump nearly four to six degrees. it holds steady on wednesday and slow tapering on thursday until they bottom over the weekend. sunday will probably be the coolest. some graduates of the california culinary academy may be getting some of their tuition money back. the students are part of a $40

million settlement with the school stemming from a class action lawsuit. it accuses the academy of making misleading statement about their programs to lure students in. once they graduated students found themselves struggling to pay back thousands of dollars back in loans. they participate in the annual euro race. the routes take them past several states including the abc7 studios. the race begin way back in 1975 and moved to oakland for few years and came back to san francisco in 1981. greg lamont was two time winner of the race. he went on to greater fame with three victories in the tour de france. check all the cyclists in
